Great Sushi Great Atmosphere

By Matthew D |

My girlfriend and I love this restaurant. It is usually full of young to middle aged couples on the weekends. If you sit at the bar you get a few freebies to include a sample japanese salad and a few small side samples. These dishes are delicious and the sample is enough to wet the taste buds. The sushi is made fresh by real Japanese sushi chefs. You can watch the master chefs in action at the bar and from many tables in the restaurant. The waitstaff and chefs are friendly and outgoing.

I've eaten there every night for the last...

I've eaten there every night for the last two weeks! Staff excellent and food is incredible, I recommend the mad peacock roll, it is the best thing ever.

The best sushi ever

By Dr. Tan |

The sushi is so tasted and the waitress is so nice. At the end she even offered ginger tea for us. It's a fantastic experience!

Non-sushi eaters beware!

By thereeds_2704 |

We stopped here on a small family trip, since my husband wanted to indulge my sushi craving. The service is not great--for example, they brought our complimentary miso soup about 15-20 min. after our arrival. Waitress came by 5-10 min. after we arrived to take our drink order (the restaurant was not busy at all). Really disappointed with the service. I ordered the Ichiba roll, which was prepared well & tasted good. I would order that again, but my husband (not a sushi fan) had the beef/chicken teppenyaki plate. It was not only poorly seasoned, but basically it was poor quality meat (very fatty beef & overcooked chicken pieces) sauteed in what tasted & looked like two cups of oil. So greasy my husband did not eat very much even though we were starved after a busy day of shopping with a 2-month old. Disappointed. Wouldn't go back again even though the sushi was great. Service needs to improve as does the rest of their menu!

Great food and service

From walking in and being happy hour to the end of the meal was prefect! My waiter was very helpful suggesting my sushi roll and to getting me in on happy hour specials. The roll smelled and tasted so fresh.

Sushi in Texas?

By SunsetCreek |

My original plan was to park and walk over to Jason's Deli for lunch until I saw the Wasabi Bistro. What a nice option for folks! They have a great lunch special selection, which I ordered the Blogogi Binto Box to sample a little of everything. But after looking at the sushi being prepared after I ordered, it made me think twice. When my box was served it was a bountiful tray of food with great flavor. I decided after this that I would return for a dinner later that afternoon and ordered a Texan Roll which was outstanding! I will return when back in town. Great staff!

Not impressed

By Wojo1978 |

Had Spicy Tuna and a salmon tempura roll...the sushi was put together clumsily and sloppy. Food was just not good. House salad was the best part of my meal.service and atmosphere are ok but I expected more from this place.

Lunch was amazing!

By Debbie L |

My husband and I had lunch here yesterday for the first time. We both had a tonkatsu bento box thinking that it wouldn't be much food since it was only $8.95. WOW, it came with a pork cutlet, vegetable and shrimp tempura, rice, 4 pieces of sushi roll, ginger, wasabi, salad and miso soup. Soooooo much food.

H-Town Visitor

By Daphanie C |

Loved, loved, loved the ambiance the moment I stepped foot in the restaurant. The personal interaction with the Chefs made my first experience the reason why I choose to dine at Wasabi every time I am in San Antonio! Plus... the Sushi is incredible, and the presentation is flawlessly masterful! If you have never experienced Wasabi, do plan to make it next on Your Bucket List - you will absolutely love it, I promise!

Delicious food and great service!

We always receive fantastic service from Wasabi. That, coupled with the wonderful food keeps us coming back.

A Good Choice

By jean-claude |

We stopped in for lunch. There was a nice variety of lunch specials for about $10. I ordered the Sushi Deluxe (10.95). I had 7 pieces of nigiri. The fish was sliced quite thick and was very fresh and tasty. Pretty wife ordered Beef teriyaki (8.95). We ordered a side of fried rice (2.95) that was quite good and an order of eggs rolls (5.95). The menu listed the egg rolls as 4 pieces, when in actuality you get 4 whole egg rolls. They were some of the best egg rolls i have had. One nit-pic; the beef was way over cooked. I'll let them slide on that one this time. The restaurant was very clean as was the restroom. The food was served very quickly. Our server, Young (spelling?) was exceptional. If you find my review helpful, please give me a "helpful" vote. Bon Appetit!

Great Food, Car Was Broken Into

By MalloryAlice |

While we love Wasabi's food and service we do feel a responsibility to note that our car was broken into while we ate (around 7:30pm on a weekday). The restaurant was very cooperative in providing the surveillance tapes (we were parked pretty close to the door) but ultimately said they were not responsible for patrolling the parking lot. Apparently cars get broken into "more than they would like." If you're interested in eating here I recommend take-out or making sure there's nothing of value in your vehicle.

Decent sushi

By ems1112 |

This is a good place to take friends that don't like sushi, because there are a lot of rolls that they can choose from. It's not for you if you are a sushi snob - but it is a decent value, and the fish was of decent quality. Not top of the line, but what would you expect for sushi in south Texas?

Excellent Asian Cuisine

By RodL66 |

We were looking for somewhere to eat within walking distance of our hotel and decided on Wasabi's, what a great decision. Given I love sushi and my wife dislikes all seafood, this was still an excellent choice because of their wide array of culinary offerings. My wife had beef Yakisoba, which was very good and tasted almost exactly like what we ate while in Okinawa, Japan. Their sushi was fresh and the roll I had was not saturated with sauces like many sushi joints tend to do. I had Yellowtail and Flounder nigiri followed by the Iron Chef roll, which is rice free, instead they use cucumber to wrap the fish and veggies. Happy hour deals are great, I highly recommend Wasabi Sushi Bistro and Sake Pub.

Love this place!

I love this place! It’s a casual and friendly environment. The staff is so friendly and I’m a regular there so they already know my order by heart.

Great quick lunch

By Sue V |

Food is always wonderful and the service is great. This is a perfection location for lunches and happy hour

Amazing food and great wait staff.

By Melissa S |

My waiter, whom I wish I remembered his name, was great. He was very friendly, attentive, and just overall amazing. I am from out of town, so I have never eaten here before. I got the lunch sesame chicken bento box (first experience getting the bento box), and the food was delicious. Everything was freshly cooked, crisp, and met every bit of my taste bud needs. He got me onto the eel sauce, and first taste on my food and I was hooked. Although it wasn't many people in the restaurant, the wait staff really took the time to connect with you and make sure you are satisfied and feel welcomed. If I can fit it into my schedule before I leave to go back, I will definitely be there.

Great Lunch Specials

By BluePlate-Now |

Went here recently for lunch and got the Bulgogi lunch special. Very good and a lot on the plate. Of course a nice helping of bulgogi, then tempura veggies with dipping sauce, small salad, 4 pieces of a california roll, rice and miso soup. Great price and good service.

Heyyyyy yaaaaaahhhhhhh

By lalalala41 |

Pleasantly surprised by this place !!! Walked in greeted by 2 extremely nice hostess . This place was immaculate. You can see immediately that they are constantly cleaning . Which is such a huge relief especially right now . I was seated & greeted by my waitress who was really nice . It was a Saturday & they are busy . Although the mandate has been lifted they were still requiring masks & social distancing. I ordered edamame & the Vegas roll . My Vegas roll came . I told the waitress to cancel my edamame. Which she replied that she “forgot to put it in”. I was irritated. It was what it was . My Vegas roll was yummy . It was hot , fresh & seasoned perfectly. The prices are reasonable with good portions . I would’ve given 5 stars but my “forgotten” edamame I’m give 4. If I could I would give 4 1/2. I will definitely come back & I suggest you give this place a try

Horrible Teriyaki Salmon

By John L |

I reviewed Wasabi before and gave it 4 stars about 18 months ago--then discovered Sushi Zushi (5 stars) and never went back to Wasabi--until this week. I ordered the Teriyaki Salmon and immediately could smell that it was not fresh. When eating it, I knew it was not fresh. I am not one to send back a dish to get something else so ate half of it and threw the rest away. It was the worse Teriyaki Salmon I have ever eaten. Portions were good, but who cares if it is not edible. I had Sashimi Rolls as and also not fresh, but not as bad as the salmon. Those were at least edible. They give you a lot of food for the money but sacrifice quality in exchange. Your choice is lots of food for a good price or go for quality and enjoy your night out. I will never eat here again. There is a reason why Sushi Zushi had a 25 minute wait and was packed, and Wasabi's parking lot is pretty much empty.

Good sushi, excellent plum wine!

By Sarah_Nike |

I definitely recommend this place. The food is good, the plum wine is good, and the ambience and service are good as well. I am real picky about my sushi. I liked it in California where I first tried it, but I fell in love with it in Japan. I'm not going to say that the sushi is up to par with Japan, but it is still very good. I have been there many times and have not been disappointed. I have brought friends and family there, and they have not been disappointed either. And when you're there, definitely try the plum wine. Everyone I have been there with likes it. And I have even gotten random people at the bar there to try it (I talk to everyone), and they have not been disappointed. There is a sushi happy hour every day where some of the sushi and drinks are half off. You will not be disappointed.

Amazing!

By Karen M |

I was staying at a nearby hotel and chose to get takeout from Wasabi. The hostess was very kind, and she did all she could to make me feel comfortable. She showed me a comfortable place to sit, brought me water, and answered questions about the menu. The food came out quickly and was still very warm when I arrived back in my hotel room. THE FOOD WAS AMAZING! In fact, it was so good, I intend to eat there again before leaving town. My only suggestion is to ask for a fork. I managed with the chopsticks provided, but it was certainly a clumsy endeavor.

Crab avocado salad is the bomb!

By Gigi Reyes |

We've been frequenting this place since years past and I could say this is the only sushi place I will keep going back to. I'm not so much a fan of sushis and raw food but I can tell you -- you don't have to eat raw sushis here! Lol. I get the deep fried sushi -- spurs roll , all the time and every time it's great. I will eat any deep fried sushi on their menu for sure! The spicy crab avocado salad was amazing for $6.95. No one can beat that! My husband orders it every time. Now I will tell you the not so good, don't order the calamari or the vegetable tempuras. For about $8, it was not worth it. The 4 pcs of calamari I got were bland and rubbery, vegetables lack flavor. I will not order it again. The tempura udon soup was okay as well, but not great. All in all, will definitely go back for their spurs roll and crab avocado salad alone. Will probably go for lunch next time and order their bento boxes for $8. Can't wait!

Outstanding

Our first visit to Wasabi while in SATX for business. It was fabulous. Food was fresh and beautifully presented.

Enjoyable Sushi Dinner

Sushi was fresh and enjoyable. Restaurant could use a facelift but the sushi delivered. Will return.

Good food and service

By Drjimmy10 |

Great little spot for sushi. I highly recommend the Cali and Philly rolls. All meals come with miso soup and salad. The service is exceptional. My hostess was Hannah who helped me get situated and performs her work with enthusiasm. My waiter Samuel was incredibly attentive. I highly recommend Wasabi for locals and tourists. You can’t go wrong here.

Excellent!!!

By Jonfo1969 |

Great Sushi/Sashimi. First time here and loved it. Very fresh food and great service. Miso Soup was great. Also had Salmon Sashimi which had a great, fresh taste. Had Salmon Roe (Ikura). This can be tricky if not fresh but theirs was very fresh and great!

Awesome Sushi, Awesome Atmostphere, Awesome Staff!

By Mother_Of_Dogs |

We were in town for my fiance's work and had brought our dogs with us. We came here after a long day of conferences because it was right next door to our hotel and they allowed dogs on the patio. We stumbled onto an absolute gem of a restaurant! First of all the food was delicious. They served a small salad and miso soup before our main course was brought out, and it was the best miso soup I've ever had! Secondly, the patio area was very small but very nice and comfortable with beautiful twinkle lights all around! Finally. every single person who worked there was EXTREMELY friendly and knowledgable about sushi! They helped us pick out rolls that we would like, identified the rolls for us when they were brought out, and were just all around great! Multiple of the staff members even came out to say hi to our dogs! There are plenty of places that say they're dog friendly but then get frustrated about the presence of our large dogs. Even when they're laying down they block easy access to tables because they're just so big. Not this restaurant! They were super sweet and went out of their way to make sure the dogs always had enough water!

Family owned feel

The staff makes you feel like you are right at home and the sushi chefs are so talanded. I would recommend it to travelers and locals alike.

Great variety of fresh creations

By MarkV709 |

First time here and my business group really enjoyed it. Wait staff was very attentive bringing menus, miso soup and drinks quickly. There are so many choices we needed him to coma back three times. Very fresh with variety of sushi, sashimi, rolls and regional dishes. Must have the Monkey bombs - incredible. Nice place, not real busy, weekday specials, some happy hour specials but very focused on a few things. For a sake bar I did not see a lot of varieties to offer but I could have missed it. We were staying next door at the Omni hotel and highly recommend if you are in the area

Elegant evening.

By hnre |

There were a lot of Japanese restaurant around the area. We chose to check out Wasbi because it seems to be a full service restaurant. We came by the back way and it makes the restaurant seems to have a corner entrance to the place. We were nicely greeted by the hostess. We've order mostly sushi. The meal come with miso soup and a salad. They were pretty good. The only thing was the Chicken Teriyaki was a little a different from what I am accustomed to, in comparison to other places. It has a plenty of vegetables and the teriyaki sauce was a little different flavor. The sushi was good. The place was low lighted which give it an elegant atmosphere.

Mediocre taste, huge portions, great value

By Dave K |

I would categorize this as an average tasting sushi bar (though you will find some Texas-fusion recipes). What bumps it to 4 stars is the very friendly staff, awesome prices, and huge portions. From appetizer through dessert, I got way more food than I was expecting. The sushi is not mind blowing though. The taste is neither especially fresh (think real Japanese sushi if you've ever been overseas) nor is it particularly flavorful. It's in the middle and is compensated for by its giant serving sizes.

Justin Rocks

By eatoutfrequent |

This is now my second trip here. The chef Justin did it again and knocked it out of the park! If you want sushi in San Antonio this is a must stop place! I will be back!

Quality meal

By Patricia T |

Visited the nearby Wasabi Bistro for lunch once during our conference stay at the Omni. The waiter was extremely helpful as three of our group don't really eat Japanese cuisine. He found. Bento box specials for everyone's tastes. The food was plentiful and tasty.

Great Sushi

By John L |

I went with a large group to this Wasabi Sushi Bistro and they handled the group very well. Excellent wait service and sushi. This is certainly a quality sushi restaurant, but I did not see anything above a quality sushi place to make it a 5 star. Maybe if the value was 4 or 5 stars instead of 3, it would have earned the 5th star for me overall.

Delicious, fantastic quality sushi and a great value!

By Kathy D |

My husband and I love sushi but don't necessarily want to spend $100 or more for a meal which is easy to do when ordering a la carte, one of these and one of those can add up quickly! We were delighted to find Wasabi, a gem of a place tucked into a little shopping area right off Interstate 10 and Huebner, near the Hyatt Place NW where we have been staying on and off for the part few weeks as we are in the middle of a move. I believe it was probably a Bennigan's in a former life. The owners have done an excellent job in giving a Japanese look and feel to the dark wood paneled multi level dining area as well as the restrooms and entry area. You have to be careful with sushi; you want to make sure you are getting very fresh fish, and the first time at a new place there is always that tiny voice in my head while waiting for the meal to be delivered to our table that is hoping that it's all fresh and delicious. Especially when you are paying the very affordable price for the lunch special. You wonder might you be sacrificing quality for price? We both chose the lunch special when we ate there the other day and crossed our fingers! ;) We were absolutely astounded and delighted by our choice! Fresh beautifully made spicy tuna roll; four pieces of top quality nigiri sushi (raw fish on rice; I think tuna, salmon, whitefish, and shrimp?) and tempura fried CA roll as well as a roll that is not fried but has a tempura shrimp inside; I've forgotten the name. The main course was preceded by a cup of light and flavorful miso soup; the service was attentive even though they were not too busy. We arrived around 2:45 that day for a late lunch and were happy to find the lunch specials were served until 4 pm. We ate all the raw fish at lunch, but the portions were so big we ended up taking some of the CA roll back to the hotel mini fridge and enjoyed it as a late night snack. Although we've only had one lunch at Wasabi so far, I expect we will be back several more times while here in San Antonio! They also have a Happy Hour we plan to try as well.

Good

By vister72 |

My husband had Chinese food while I ordered the crab and crawfish roll. The crawfish was frozen and rubbery tasting while the crabmeat was imitation crab. Forgot to ask this when I ordered as I assumed it was fresh crab meat. The service was friendly and it was a nice quiet place to eat on our last day in San Antonio and close to our hotel (walking distance).

Fantastic sushi and service.

By Adventurecritic |

This sushi restaurant located at the Colonnade is a great place to eat lunch or dinner. They have great lunch and happy hour specials. The restaurant is not particularly attractive on the outside, but inside it is attractive and clean. On prior visits we have always sat at the booths, but on our most recent visit we were seated at the table area on the far left side of the entryway and there was an unpleasant musky smell which might be moisture in the wood floors, but it smelled faintly like urine. We did not mention this to the staff or management, since we did not believe there was anything they could easily do to remedy this and we did not ask to be seated elsewhere, but we will ask to be seated in the booths next time. Aside from this unusual experience, our visit was enjoyable and our meal outstanding. One thing that sets this sushi restaurant apart from many others is the fact that they actually make proper sushi rolls. So many other sushi restaurants have reduced the size of their rolls whilst simultaneously increasing the cost, which is a scam to their patrons and I absolutely avoid any restaurant that adheres to such practices. Unlike those other restaurants, at Wasabi they serve you a full size roll, with a respectable portion of raw sushi in the middle which you can actually see, taste and enjoy and their prices are great to top it off. I highly recommend their fried calamari appetizer, it is delicious. The food is great, the service is good, the prices are outstanding and Wasabi is our number 1 choice for sushi when we visit to San Antonio! We really recommend it!

Twice this week

By eg956 |

Can't get enough of this place. Bring out salad and miso soup immediately after ordering drinks. Great attentive service. Go during happy hour and you will get a bargain. Been to other sushi in San Antonio and there is plenty of competition but the prices are affordable here. Sushi can get outrageous prices elsewhere but not this place. I enjoy just straight salmon and tuna on rice or sashimi. The quality of the fish I don't know enough of to compare to more expensive places but I trust my taste buds. I take down a sake bomb before I get my food and always overeat here. Haven't had a bad experience yet, been about 10 times.

Very good sushi!

Very good selection of rolls. Nothing is really overpriced and the rolls are good sized. The happy hour lets you save a few bucks on some rolls. Appetizers are great too! Get jalapeño bombs!

We come here often my kids love the sushi and chinese menu, I get the whatever roll and they always make something awesome.

Overall impression = Meh

By Cinerco |

Walking in the place you have hope. Then, there’s a faint, odd smell to the place and outdated interior. The sushi didn’t upset my stomach, but I was ready for it. I’ll walk farther from my hotel next time for food.

Enjoyed all around

By eatoutfrequent |

I hit happy hour? Service was great! Sat at the sushi bar and Justin the chef took great care of me! Sushi was great! I look forward to coming back in future travels to San Antonio.

Very good food & great service.

So great each time we go in! The spicy sashimi salad really delicious. Been going there for years never disappointed.

hard rice

By 502ericaf |

this is a very spacious restaurant for sure with plenty of tables and parking outside. they are very traditional asian looking in their decor and vibe. the service was pretty great and our waitress was super cool and friendly. she came by to help us enough times and not overbearing at all which was great! The specials for drinks and food are undeniably attractive, you will be able to get a lot of bang for your buck here and there is no doubt in that statement. However you will we that here you will get what you paid for. they specials are pretty great but they wont apply additional military discount as you are already eating from the special in the happy hour so keep that in mind, they don`t overlap discounts here. however the happy hour prices are so good that you wont even notice that. now we got excited and got a medium hot sake and it was a pretty good serving, in most places the medium we got here is a large sake. this drink cost 7 bux and 2 ppl drank plenty out of it. we were ordered one of each item on the happy hour sushi roll special, it was a pretty large plate, we had everything. sadly i regretted it, even though the fish was clearly fresh and pretty great, the rice on the rolls was very dry and tasted a little hard, it felt almost uncooked. sadly it was not the best sushi rice i had in fact it was pretty bad. i would only recommend the place for the prices the rolls have such a great price that would not hurt to try and see if my rice was a bad rice day.

We had an urge for some sushi rolls and Wasabi was the place , quiet on a Sunday afternoon with friendly staff and tasty food. We enjoyed it all and will do it again sometime.

Excellent Sushi. The staff and the Chef came out to sing Happy Birthday to my Daughter. Love this place!

Needs a Refresh

By Len P |

Really disappointed with the cleanliness and ambiance. It’s kind of like a rundown Applebee’s from 1995. It smelled bad, the floors were not clean, the windows are fogged out, they have an old TV on the wall with wires hanging down. There’s an old window air conditioner. This would be fine for a bar that serves wings, but they’re serving raw fish. That being said, the sushi was pretty good. Our waiter, Justin was good. The whole place just needs to be redecorated and get a new attitude.

Average sushi, nothing special.

By Peter A |

We are experienced sushi gourmands having lived in and visited Japan often. The sushi offered at this place did not taste the ones we found there. Their offerings and the ones we sampled seems like non-Japanese made by sushi chefs who trained in the West. Reminded me of California Korean sushi; not quite the real thing.

Great place for sushi

By southtexastraveller |

This place has to be one of my favorite places to have ever eaten sushi here in Texas. The food and service was great. When we showed up for dinner there was hardly anyone there but by 7:30 pm the place was happening. I can tell this is consistent because many people that came in seemed to know the sushi chef quite well. The menu is quite extensive with many choices to choose from. If you're not from the San Antonio area and are looking for good sushi try this place - I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Good all around

By Jen K |

I enjoy the sushi here, although they stopped carrying my double-decker roll (probably because it didn't have cream cheese or something fried in it). I still like the place, and the one time I asked if they could still make my roll, they did. The few Korean items are pretty good, and the atmosphere is usually really nice.

I would have never guessed

By scubachef88 |

Never considered eating here until tonight this place was never on my radar. But oh oh am I so glad we tried it. Miso soup and fresh salad with every order and btw both very good. For appetizer we tried the jalapeño bombs omg jalapeño stuffed with spicy tuna cream cheese tempura fried Spicy crab salad very good The spurs tempura fried roll was perfect also had the red dragon roll Needless to say wasabi just went to the top of my sushi list

Always great! For a very competitive price!

By Andre T |

This place is well hidden... but is worth the search! Very friendly staff welcomes you at your arrival and guide you thru their relatively large menu. But what ever you will choose is garanteed to be good! And for a great price too! I always take time to go there when i’m in San Antonio!

Food & Service by Steven was on point at Wasabi!

By Ab C |

Loved the food, the price and the service by Steven. Asked about food recommendations with 3 young teenagers in our party who were not sure what to order and Steven suggestions helped us enjoy a delicious meal with attentive service.

Very nice staff but dated interior and just OK food.

By Todd M |

The food was ok. I was a little underwhelmed by the sushi but the Bulgogi that my wife had was good. The tofu soup was pretty bad but the salad was fresh and tasty. The entire interior is dark and in need of an upgrade. Think of an 80's dark restaurant and that hits pretty close to home. The table felt a little sticky and I question the overall cleanliness although I did not see anything that was overtly dirty. It just kind of "felt" dirty. I think if they would take the vinyl covering off their tables, it would help that a lot. The staff was terrific and took very good care of us. They were prompt, very nice, and attentive. Overall, I might go back but not for the sushi.

Awesome.

Thickest and freshest sushimi I've had. Very attentive staff and superb food. Sake was excellent too. Will be back, and soon.

Too many cooks in the kitchen

By Sad in San Antonio |

My honey and I have eaten lunch here many times. Every time we go we always choose the Maki sushi. This is definitely case of too many cooks in the kitchen. And each of them having their own way of cooking things. And this the manager up front, treats the customer as if the heirs, unexpected results are the customers faults. Let me explain. The first time we ate there, I got a classic favorite for safety, a shrimp roll. The shrimp was breaded and fried as usual. I also tried an unusual dynamite roll and I substituted the spicy salmon for raw salmon at a $3 charge. I went back again later, and had the manager waiting on me who told me I couldn't do the substitution on the dynamite roll. I explained that the mail waiter had done it for me before and charged me the up charge. I had to order the salmon roll too, only this time it was not fried. When I asked about this she told me it was never fried for the Maki lunch meal. This is not the first time this has happened, are the second time, or even the third . And if you ask why there's so many differences the manager will tell you that there's different Cooks. And she gets upset.... How is the customers supposed to know who's cooking when, who cooked your food the time you liked it, and what differences are correct for the menu. There should be consistency in the menu period and the cooks. Not excuses. Admittedly I haven't been back in 2 months,. And after at least five visits and at least five excuses. Still seeking a delicious sushi restaurant in San Antonio. I know of a few in Dallas area but sad in San Antonio.
