My First Taiwan meal... and OMG, I'll be back soon!!!

By Beth F |

This place is FABULOUS! My friend and I were going to meet at Jade tea bar in SE Portland for some Pho @ lunch hour, and we didn't feel like waiting in line & prefer to sit and order our food. I happened to notice the spot and oh am I glad that I did! Our world is short of fabulous soup spots other than Thai, Vietnamese and now Taiwan... the beef noodle soup was OFF THE CHARTS delicious! And you can have rice noodles instead of wheat noodles which is my gluten-free preference. My friend had a chicken thing & we got the wild yam, water chestnut, red pepper pea pod & do you sautéed mustard greens… Both were delicious! It's a really nice clean place, Judy is the owner and she was adorable. I will be back and I will be back very soon!

Great Taiwanese restaurant

By John Sowell |

Beef noodle soup is such a big deal in Taiwan that its capital city, Taipei, hosts an annual festival devoted to the slurp-happy goodness. Awards are given for the best spicy version and the best clear soup. The beef noodle soup served at Wei Wei -- pronounced Way Way -- isn't that spicy version; still, they pack a lot of flavor into the stainless steel bowls of soup served at this small Sellwood eatery. The soup created by owner Judy Wang will never win the flaming hot award, but, thankfully, there's a condiment table with hot pepper flakes steeped in oil. And with bottles of sriracha lined up on the same table, you can make yours as hot as you like. I've eaten a lot of Asian soups, from the medicinal Cantonese chicken soup made from a black-skinned chicken to Thai tom yum goong to Vietnamese pho, bun bo Hue and mi quang. Taiwanese beef noodle soup is so unlike all of them but excellent in its own right. The soup has big chunks of braised beef, significantly larger than the chunks you'd find in stew. Thick wheat noodles -- made in-house -- mingle with pickled mustard greens and a seasonal vegetable, spinach was being used the day I visited, in the flavorful broth. The restaurant is located in a strip mall, wedged between a nail salon and a convenience store. If you have to wait for a seat, get your nails done and then come back when it clears out a little. The recipes are based on home cooking and street food found when Wang's family lived in Taiwan in the 1970s and '80s. Her parents help out in the kitchen, ensuring the recipes maintain their authentic feel.

Don't Weit

We were in the mood for noodle soup and I had heard about this place for some time. It's only been open since Nov 2015 and it's definitely gaining popularity. Apparently, on weekends, wait times can be up to an hour. Best time to go is on weekdays after 7 pm (they're open until 10pm). On to the food... If you're looking for no-fuss Taiwanese food, you've come to the right place. Thick wheat noodles simmer in savory broth. There are both meat and vegetarian options. The former is either beef of pork cutlet whilst the latter is fried tofu and carrots. Both options are very filling and tasty. We also ordered the salt and pepper with basil chicken pieces (highly recommend). At $2.5 each, try the famous bao which is meat wrapped in a light, puffy flour wrap - so good! Round out the meal with some jasmine tea or passion fruit/green tea. Don't Weit to visit Wei Wei.

Good neighborhood place

After three visits for lunch, I give this place 3 stars. This is a good, local place for lunch. They have a very good tea list, a variety of small plates, and some more substantial servings of main courses. In my experience, the bows are quite good, if a bit over priced. I also like the noodle dishes. Unfortunately, the grilled squid tends to be tough. I found the service to good.

Enjoyable lunch

A small but efficient Asian cafe with delightful menu and delicious noodle soup , large portion and very tasty, quick and smiling service , has its own parking lot and easy to find, great value

Didn't live up to other reviews I read.

I am not familiar with food from Taiwan but I am very familiar with Chinese food and Asian food in general. I did not care for the food at Wei Wei. The dishes are heavy handed, not delicate. i ordered a grilled squid which was nice to look at- about eight inches, sliced thin, But it had been overcooked and was rubbery. I didn't eat much of it. Hubby had House Spicy Noodles. The noodles were house made, I think, thick wheat noodles. They were served with some small pieces of water chestnuts and ground pork with some sauce. They were ok. The third dish was pan friend bao. These were similar to potstickers but the dough was quite thick (same dough as the noodles I think) and the shape was like a bao or dumpling. They have an extensive tea menu and i ordered chrysanthumum tea (no caffeine). I asked for all the dishes to come at the same time. The first tow dishes came together and the bao, which are on the appetizer menu came about 20 minutes later. I thought they had forgotten them. Speaking of forgetting, this was a forgettable dinner.

Great spot for lunch

Everything is good. You can't go wrong. Grilled squid is a favorite. The pork Bao are some of the best.

Excellent Taiwanese Cuisine

What's Taiwanese cuisine?: Chinese but better! Wei Wei serves up excellent Taiwanese food using authentic recipes and fresh ingredients. The space is small, so get there early, and enjoy excellently prepared meals!

Secret treasure in a mini mall

By Renee Daphne K |

Very unexpected find tucked away between a convenience store and a nail salon. Ample portions with even the appetizers which are more than just “the usual”. Distinctive flavors in every dish. Very tasty moderate heat house made chili oil. Extensive and high quality tea menu. Love the metal instead of bamboo chopsticks. Wonderfully attentive service. You also receive individual small plates to enable sharing of all dishes. Even the noodles are house made!

Excellent, different!

Small but beautiful and immaculate. We loved the pork belly bao, next time we'll get more, they are small and only cost $2.50 each. The fried chicken, boneless, skinless thighs, was amazing!!! I chose the multi grain rice which I will get from now on, so good you can't even tell it's healthier. The mustard greens stir fried with mushrooms and red peppers was my favorite, came with a flavorful savory sauce. Melon iced tea was delicious, lightly sweetened perfectly. My partner had fried chicken with broccoli, rice with chopped pork sauce on top, it was wonderful. Ingredients are bright and fresh. Everything was so flavorful and unexpected. Great value for the quality and portions. Will definitely be back. =)

Hidden gem in Sellwood

By Grover |

Stopped in at Wei Wei for the first time today. We'll definitely return! Fresh, delicious, affordable, made-from-scratch Taiwanese cooking. Everything we tried was excellent and beautifully presented: Braised Beef Bao, Chicken Rice Plate, Vegetable Noodle Soup (with homemade noodles), Iron Goddess tea, and ganache-filled chocolate chip cookies. Wei Wei is tucked into a small strip mall on 13th Avenue, but walk through the doors and you enter another world. Dine in or take out.

Decent Taiwanese place

I am from Taiwan. I find the food to be good but not great. Nothing particularly tasty but most dishes are done well enough to be enjoyable.

Pretty authentic Taiwanese

Close to sellwood. Wei wei does great fried chicken, porkchop rice and also very good beef noodle. Portion is decent also. A great find if you are craving for Taiwanese food.

Yummy!

Had lunch with a few friends and this restaurant , under a new ownership , was great! The old Wei Wei was a great spot for food , but the current one offered more options. I had one of the best vegetarian noodle soup! My friends enjoyed their picks, and we will definitely go back to try other dishes. It didn’t take a long time to get our food, but it’s not a quickie either. Great Taiwanese food !

Noodles Excellent, bao's and grilled squid very good

By londonna |

The beef noodle soup my husband had was EXCELLENT. The broth was spicy with star anise and other Asian flavors, loaded with tender beef, and chewy noodles. It was $13-- but I think we could have split it-- worth price. Had the pork belly, beef, and chicken steamed bao buns. They were very good. You have to like the intensity of the bean paste spread. $3/2.50 respectively. Had whole grilled squid for $9 with dipping sauce. Well grilled-- not over cooked. Tentacles were especially delicious. We will return as I would like to try more on the menu. It was difficult to choose. Place is very clean and seems well run. Lovely baked goods in front case and if I wasn't so full I would have tried a s'more cupcake or cream-filled cookies. There was so much food we brought home a box. Just lovely.

Good, but not great.

Four of us had dinner at Wei Wei, which meant that we got to sample quite a few of the menu items. We thought, on the whole, that it was average, nothing special. (Although the White Chrysanthemum tea was great !) The atmosphere is pleasant and not too noisy, which was good. The service was friendly, although sometimes a bit slow and poorly coordinated in terms of the delivery of the food to the table. One of the main courses came out of the kitchen almost ten minutes after all the other main courses had been served, which meant that one person started her meal way after the others ! The food was fair to good, not bad but not delicious. My beef noodle soup was a mixed experience – great beef and noodles, but VERY salty broth ! My husband and I thought Wei Wei a better choice for lunch than for dinner, as the menu is limited. Beware the teapots – they all dribble on the table !
