Welcome with open arms

By Cheeto4242 |

Well, I must say my visit to La Jolla was really laid back. I'm not used to seeing that many physically fit people in once place here in the land of overweight people. No fast food joints to speak of. How grand. As soon as my buddy and I stepped into this establishment we were welcomed by the bar tender, who by the way resembled actor Carrie Anne Moss from the movie the Matrix. What a great personality. Of course, at that moment I resembled George Cooney :), Service was great and the burger was excellent. Stop in for beverage, some food and fine people to be around.

Super Bowl and Pizza Great combo

By austinbillgolfer |

We were staying in La Jolla during the Super Bowl and decided to do takeout Pizza in our condo so we could see and enjoy the Super Bowl We ordered 2: the Signature and the Wild Mushroom Pizzas. Both were perfect and enjoyed with a great bottle of wine. We could not have been happier.

Excellent pizza

By danielfernan7 |

The mushroom duxelle pizza is simply excellent. Based on this I assume the rest to be great as well. Fully recommend this place and will return!

Nice hidden gem in La Jolla

By Travis P |

Nice little pizza place in southern La Jolla. We shared a margarita pizza and house salad here for dinner. Good beer selection. The pizza was good and the salad was excellent. Would definitely eat here again.

GREAT PLACE WITH NEIGHBORHOOD ATMOSPHERE!

By Rebecca G |

We were there on a Sunday afternoon. There were people but it wasn't overly crowded. Our server came right away and told us about their specials of the day...a bacon jam burger and a fresh vegetable pizza. They have a nice selection of beers but serve other beverage types as well. The burger was large and delicious with a generous dollop of the bacon jam. The pizza was an individual size and was filling and although topped with fresh ingredients, it was really kind of ordinary. Hot and tasty, but nothing to rave about. The service was outstanding, and we will definitely go back there.

Best pizza in San Diego!

By Samara G |

We LOVE Wheat & Water! The pizza is one of a kind and super authentic. The staff that waited on us, Rebecca & Peyton both made our experience fantastic. They are kind and very experienced! We highly recommend coming here for a local and delicious experience in San Diego! We can’t wait to come back with our friends!

Great People and Food

By dennis d |

We had a pre-wedding party on the front patio and owners Ted and Doug and other staff members were of great help and support. We had a great number of creative white and red pizza choices served from their wood burning oven. Besides great small plate choices like: brussel sprouts & pork belly, goat cheese fritters, chicken pesto, meatballs, roasted beet salad, chicken liver pate, poached pear salad, caeser salad, and cheese and salami/sausage trays. We also ordered their BLT, meatball, aloha pie, margherita, and caponata pizzas. Crusts and toppings were tasty. There are also choices of salads. Great selection of craft draught beers, wines, and great food wants to make you come back for more. BTW their only dessert is an awesome one called, Charlie's apple crisp. I think we ran the menu?

Oh man!!! Is this place great!!!

By RnsTravels |

Wonderful location, and whether you want to dine inside or out, the ambiance is all SOCAL awesomeness. We had the meatball appetizer- wonderful!! The side salad- don’t be fooled by the name- it’s a full sized fresh and incredible salad. Also, the little Wedge- I added avocado, was perhaps one of the best tasting salads I’ve EVER had. Margarita Pizza and their Kitchen Classic Pizza- WOW!!! Friendly , helpful and warm service makes dining here an absolute joy.

Disappointed

By meeames |

We called an ordered a couple pies to go one a Margarita pizza, the other one a cheese & sausage. Quite to our surprise we were told they could make a cheese & sausage pizza. Their only offering was their specialty pizza with four other items on it; Along with the Italian sausage. Needless to say; that made no sense whatsoever. If we were not quite as hungry & tired from our day of sightseeing we would hung up. They happen to be the closest to where we stayed so we ended up with 2 Margarita Pizza. Which were nothing special.

Good food servers not wearing masks

By Andrea L |

Food was really good but 1/2 of the servers were either wearing their masks under their noses or around their neck. I was really quoted shocked and annoyed.

Great place

By JackofPBFL |

We did not go for food, but for drinks and dessert. The atmosphere was very social. The staff friendly, helpful and hospitable and the desserts were excellent. Would like to return for a meal based on our experience.

Average Artisan Pizza

By SDAR |

Wheat & Water specializes in artisan pizza and craft beer. Their craft beer selection is great. Their pizza, not so much. It is good but not great. Isola and Sammy's are better.

Simple food done really well

By Gibbo1969 |

We were driving up the coast and had the munchies and found this place on google maps. Obviously a pretty new place, great first impressions, funky decor and friendly staff. Great range of local beers on tap , menu was simple but a good range with some yummy sounding pizzas. We chose a beet and blue cheese salad which was on point, great flavour and plenty of both major ingredients. Also had the pear and prosciutto pizza which was 90% perfect , just a bit burnt around the edges and bottom but the flavour was awesome.

A Birdrock Gem!

By Sebastian Taylor |

Thriving in a great location outside of the hustle and bustle of downtown La Jolla, a beautiful seaside city in Southern California. Wheat and Water, or “Wheat” as the locals call it, offers a unique dining experience within this storybook side of La Jolla, less know and often times overlooked. Nestled in an exquisite beach village prodigiously named Birdrock, offers delicious restaurants, trendy boutiques, its an adorable secret getaway, whether it be for an hour or a lifetime. At the center of the community, located on La Jolla Blvd, you’ll come upon this adorable yet rustic beach gem called Wheat & Water. First openings it’s doors on November 1st, 2016, “Wheat” has grown to be; not only part of the Birdrock community, it’s grown to be a success in sharing the true nature, the heart of Southern California, always showing the seaside love to all those who visit. Their specialities are baking one of the most delicious pizza’s in town; fire roasted to perfection on a sea of brick with a hint of fresh burning white oak subtly baked in, permeating its crust with each delectable bite. Not feeling like a pizza; the lighter side of the menu offers a fresh and vibrant salad selection, and of course we can’t forget the wide selection of ambrosial cured meats and cheeses; that make up the beautiful charcuterie boards, which are a true delight. The drink menu; “Wheat”, offers a distinctive collection of beer on tap or bottled, a perfect selection of spirits, for when’s its time to celebrate, or to wind down the day with friends. More importantly their speciality drinks, which are known throughout the community to be some of the most unique and delicious drinks in town. This trifecta of a delightful atmosphere; good friends & family, most of all, abundant drinks and spirits, is a considerable reason to visit Wheat & Water. The decision is yours; however, next time you’re hungry or simply want to enjoy a day or night out, you should stop into “Wheat” for a sojourn.

Overpriced

By alaskantravelnut |

This restaurant features pizza and salads. It has inside and outside seating. The servers are friendly. The salads are tasty. The pizza is typical for California but would not be recognized as pizza on the East Coast. I don’t have sufficient experience in La Jolla to compare the cost of eating here to other restaurants in the area, but it would be considered too expensive in my well-travelled world. The pizzas are the size of large dinner plates. Dinner for four, consisting of two slices of pizza per person, a shared entree-sized salad, and one modest alcoholic drink per person will set you back about $140 including tip. It is the only restaurant I can recall, particularly one with a bar, that does not serve coffee.

Nice lunch stop

By Cory N |

Cute place to stop for a tasty burger and tea. Our waitress from MN was very friendly and enjoyable to talk to.

Food, and drinks, and service...oh my

By Shannon S |

This place had great service! Chelsea was fun and really nice. The brussel sprouts, fried cauliflower, and spinach and ricotta pizza were amazing. They had a good selection of beers too!😉. Being in Bird Rock La Jolla, I expected it to be more expensive, but the price were great too!

Great Drinks, Apps and Pizza

By Stephen B |

My friends and I go here from time to time and always have a great time. Great beer and cocktail selection. I love the mussel and octopus appetizers. The meatballs are also great (although I don't eat sugar or grains, generally). Outstanding selection of charcuterie plates and flat-bread pizzas. This place should do well.

A great balcony and food

Went here with a Travelzoo deal. A friendly but overstretched server looked after us on the sunny roadside balcony. Great pate and pizza..... One to return to.

Yummy brunch food, great drinks

By Lakeside31 |

We were looking for something in La Jolla that wasn’t crazy busy and had parking, and stumbled on this place. We were so happy we did! The brunch menu has something for everyone, from traditional stuff (with a twist, if you want) to really inventive entrees. Try the chilaquiles! Also, the Bloody Marys are delish, especially if you sub in mezcal. There is a parking lot next to the building and seating indoors and out. This is primarily a bar, so not sure about kids.

Great local spot for a reasonably priced bite in La Jolla!

By Victoria K |

Tried this new restaurant for lunch. Excellent! Ingredients were fresh, portions were generous. We tried mussels (spicy but delish), We had 2 different salads (poached pear and fig was wonderful) and the Caponanta pizza. One vegan in the group so this pizza was perfect. It was loaded with baked garlic, eggplant, several types of olives, etc. Very flavorful, felt like I was in Italy. Everything I saw come out of the kitchen looked wonderful. Casual atmosphere. Full bar, lots of beers and a selection of wines as well. Very reasonable and a great spot to share some good food with friends! Patio seating, booths, tables and high tops in the bar. Hope it does well!

Nice little brew restaurant

By gzau |

Wheat and Water is a nice brew restaurant located in the heart of Bird Rock area in La Jolla. It has outdoor seating and also the restaurant opens right out through the front. They have a coffee bar and of course also a good selection of beers. The staff is friendly and good. The food is bar food but done quiet well. We liked the octopus dish. Good place for a bite.

Nice Choice!

By 2again |

This venue is large, but cozy. Outdoor and indoor dining is available. The drink menu is varied, and the food menu offers appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and lots of pizza options which can be modified to to suit your taste. Three of us spent over $100.00 for basically a pizza, wings, and beer meal which is on the pricey side, but I’d dine here again. Our server was fun and efficient. The food was excellent.

Unexpected vegan treat!

By RJA_SD_1964 |

Being vegans, my wife and I had seen a vegan pizza on their menu so we stopped in for lunch to try it. Ted, the owner, was serving and he was very friendly and open. The Brussel sprouts appetizer was not vegan but he was able to remove the cheese so we could try them and they were incredible! The pizza was wood fired and was also amazing! Their bottle price on wine was very reasonable, so it turned out to be a nice outing sitting on the patio enjoying the weather, food, wine and my lovely wife!

Nice food, long wait!

By Julz862 |

The food here was nice enough, some dishes good, others just average. We waited nearly an hour for our food which, with four hungry children, was not fun! Staff were helpful & apologetic.

Server & Hostess harassment

By AnnieMF |

As a foodie.. great food, expect nice cold microbrew beer w/ chilled glasses (which is super important to me, ) delicious pizza and good burgers. Only 1-2 stars bc of odd anxiety ridden servers and hostess. 🧐 I'm thinking that a good manager might fix the challenge but we (party of 7... 2 families) arrived and sat at 4 pm, ONLY table. We were asked to leave at 5:45 for reservations. No problem, we were reminded, no joke, at least 10+ times about leaving. WE GOT IT and left at 5:35. -closed tab n walked out. Plenty of time for a reset, shopped a little n saw the table was empty all the way to 6 pm. Very odd and irritating. So, go there if u like good food and don't mind mediocre service and harassment (in between being glued to cell phone.) Bummer bc I love it! My friends said they would never return! Embarrassing for me since I suggested it! Ugh!

Good Wood-Fired Pizzas

By Iambic |

Wheat & Water is kind of a nondescript pub, but with good service and food. Appears to be popular with people with kids. The menu is not big, but what there is interesting and well-prepared, and, especially at happy hour, a decent price. We had a Brussels-sprout/potato appetizer and a meat pizza. The pizza was excellent (fresh ingredients), the vegetables good but over-sauced. The beer selection is decent and varied, but not extensive.

Really good pizza

By Jackie W |

This isn't a very big restaurant but we had heard good things about it. We decided to give it a try. Their pizza is really good. Probably some of the best I've ever had. My husband had the chicken wings and said they were delicious. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. While we were there we met a very friendly guy who grew up in LaJolla. He gave us some great information about the area. Nice to meet s friendly local. Really enjoyed it.

Delicious pizza, cool front patio, but no masks?

By BrianBrooklyn |

Mostly enjoyed a mid-week meal here while staying in the Bird Rock area. The pizzas -- one 4 cheese and the other roasted mushroom -- were delicious. I get my share of top-notch pizzas at home of Brooklyn, NY and these measured up quite well. I also appreciated the dog-friendly policy and patio atmosphere. One concern: All of the staff I saw were violating California's mask mandate. This was at a time when Omicron numbers were still very high in the county. Even those working indoors, including the hostess, were maskless (and as customers wore masks when they entered). It was a disappointing note to an otherwise enjoyable visit.
