Another place that's nothing to look at from the outside, but the vide inside is great and the food is really good. Live music, inside and patio seating, an attached grocery (oddly enough, lol) and large selection of beer, including their own brews.

The beer selection is amazing. The food is interesting - a fusion of Indian spices with other cultures. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I had ratatouille, spiked up with hot spices- didn't really work for me. If you're looking for Indian food, this is probably the wrong place; if you're looking for an interesting taste experience, check it out!

This place is pure Austin...Indian food, microbrews, and live music. I had a goat burger, some great IPAs, and the band was a seven piece, multicultural, multigenerational group with electric guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, sax, djembe backing up the leader, who sang and played the kora.

Well worthwhile for the unique atmosphere (lively music, Beatles too) and surprisingly quick service. You order at the front and before you know, the plates arrive. We had the veggie combo (Dhaba bowls). Not too "hot" spicy and very tasty. The atmosphere is very friendly and informal. Several choices of seating (in/outside, by the bar, sitting out near the beers, etc.) Prices are reasonable and no problem with free parking.

The only words to describe this place are cool and quirky. They have so many different beers to choose from and the Indian food is simply delicious. We came on a night with live music playing and the atmosphere was amazing, exactly what I had been looking for o my American roadtrip. We discovered this unique little bar on our last night in Austin and wished we had discovered it sooner, if i'm ever back in Austin in the future, this place will be on the top of my list of place to visit. Loved it.

Full disclosure: I know the chef here. I first visited WhipIn about a year and a half ago. I had heard about it and wanted to see what it's like. From the outside, then, you would probably not have expected it to be much in the way of ambience and good food, but a great place for a beer, and maybe wine. Well, it was quite a surprise! And there have been many changes in recent months and it's really quite something now! To start, the front wall was removed allowing lots more light inside and providing more open seating. I'd bring kids here now! The menu has been almost completely revamped, but most of the 'classics' that everyone loves are still available. The menu changes quarterly and most everything is truly 'farm to table.' And no, this is not just a marketing term at this Austin hot spot. There is an Indian flair to the food and many standard Indian dishes, but the menu is quite diverse and it's fun to pop in to see what's new! They have a great beer selection and very knowledgeable beer dudes and dudettes, and they have great, unique wines. And, they feature live music many nights of the week, as well as fun events. Follow them on Facebook to know what's happening when. Have fun if you check it out!

This restaurant/bar was on our "to do" list for our visit to Austin because we love Indian food and the Whip In sounded different and interesting. We first stopped in on a Saturday and they were only serving a traditional American brunch, so we elected to return later in the week for an Indian lunch. We were not disappointed. We both had the Barton Springs panaani (a naan panini). It was chock full of smoked turkey, bacon, and Swiss cheese with a habanero cranberry jam that was sweet rather than spicy as we expected. The flavorful sandwich came with a side of delicious red cabbage slaw. We also had a bowl of dal with spinach, served over rice. Delicious! As others have said, a very quirky restaurant and bar with a large selection of beer and wine to go. Reasonable prices for very good food. We will be back on our next trip to Austin.

We went to Whip-In twice during our Friday to Sunday stay in Austin and we really enjoyed ourselves. Friday was a central american band and Saturday was an awesome Eastern European band that had the entire place up on their feet dancing to Russian and Yiddish folk music. The food was an eclitic mix of Indian food (Samosas were awesome) and salads amd sandwiches. Also, has a small gourmet food shop and beer and wine store. The oudoor patio would be great if you didnt want to dine inside with the loud music if it were not for all the smokers out there ruining the fresh air. Highly sggest that the restaurant establish a no smoking on premises policy.

We had the Barton Springs sandwich. It tasted good, a bit spicy. The naan bread made up most of the sandwich; not a lot of stuff in between, but it tasted good, and 4 hours later, I still felt good, not stuffed or bloated, so I liked the food. The only tea they had was in bottles, and we could only find one selection of unsweet tea. The tea was so-so, and of course, no refills possible. Funky Asian Indian/Southwest vibe. My wife and I were the only people in the place without a gaudy tattoo. They took our order at the cash register and the cash register attendant brought us our food. Parking a little difficult. All in all, worth going back to.

This restaurant had fabulous reviews and was also one of the 35 must do things in Austin. We went expecting a fancy place, but it was just the opposite. We went for lunch, so did not indulge in any alcoholic beverages, which I guess is phenomenal. But we mainly had the fusion Indian food. I liked it a lot, especially the toast with chana on top. Their appetizers were fantastic. Migas was not too good. They had way too much fries in the burger, but it was very interesting.

Great place for some quality Tex Mex mashed with Indian food. Some really nice flavors. The Indian style nachos were terrific and the samosas were excellent. Plus they have an enormous and excellent beer and wine selection. Ordered takeout which was ready in 15 minutes. Will return again!

I was referred her by uncle Billy's brewery. Said they had a great selection of bottle or go on top of the drafts. Also said how helpful they would be advising. Right again. A must visit next time in Austin.

This place is hard to describe, it has indoor and outdoor seating, and you can shop for drinks and snacks to carry out, or dine in. The outside looks very funky, the inside more warm and friendly. It's counter service, but then they bring your dish to your table, and you can run a tab if you're not sure whether you might want refills, dessert, etc. My Frito Bowl salad was with the vegetarian filling (I chose that instead of the goat chili) and the tempeh or whatever-it-was was a bit sour, but that could have been my mistake, maybe that's how it's supposed to taste. I saw some of my favorite Chateauneufs-du-Papes there, as well as many other wines and some great craft beers. The dessert portions are small for the money, but really hand-crafted (I had pana cotta with a blueberry glaze, for example). It's a short walk from the Best Western Plus City Hotel.

Last night wast my third time going and it did not disappoint. I think the thing I like most is that it is different. The food is listed as Indian, but that is not really accurate. It is more tex-Indian. Most of the dishes are either the standard Texas fair with an Indian twist or Indian dishes with a Texas twist. The beer selection is insane. They have a huge selection of local and micro brew beers both on tap or in the bottle. Including several I have never seen any where else. they also have a wine bar,but I have never tried it. The atmosphere is a party one so this is not the place to go for a quite romantic dinner for two. It is a great place to go for a good time, good food and something different. My wife and I will go back. Actually we plan to go back in two days to try the Sunday brunch.

This place is awesome. Don't let the outside appearance deter you from entering this gem! The food is a combination of Texas and Indian styles or as they put it - "Texas style comfort food with the Gujarati flare from the Indian subcontinent". Besides the terrific menu choices, this place boasts over 50 taps of craft beer, a great bottle selection as well as detailed wine options. We had the Elegant Stoner Stack and the South Asian Frito Pie, what a way to start my visit to Austin!!! My only disappointment was that I could not try more dishes after filling up on the aforementioned choices. There is also a bottle shop inside the establishment that carries a quality selection of wines and craft beers.

As a visitor from Europe I love the quirkiness of places like this... part restaurant, part sore...part outside 'hanging' area. There's a great energy about the place and the appetizers (humous especially) are superb. I had heard of nay of the beers... but I like that... dive in !

Which is typical of Austin. Good beer selection, but that's not particularly unique here. My food was acceptable, my wife found hers to be bland. Definitely has the Austin vibe and a good story, but really not that special and there's much better food in this town. Not worth a special trip. I'm not inclined to return.

We met friends here for dinner and were very impressed. Loved the menu and want to go back to try some other dishes. Have two teenage boys and they loved it as well! Will definitely be back.

I was staying at a cheap hotel up the block and walked over to be so pleasantly surprised by the Whip In. A family-owned bar/restaurant with outdoor seating and a sort of ranch-style meets minimart interior (they sell packaged goods and Indian food in a section next to the restaurant). Great beers on tap, with $3 special on Texas beers. Was there too late to try the food but this was a perfect hour in Austin.

This hidden gem provides very good Indian cuisine, a good draft beer selection in a very casual unusual and organic atmosphere, since the restaurant also serves as a full service liquor store. Prices are modest and portions are ample.

This is austin! Been here forever never knew it was this awesome bar/ restaurant. 10 years later I finally get to go see what all the fuss is about! Too cool

Hybrid Indian fusion craft beer cafe! Yes, that's Whip In.This Indian themed cafe has a lot to offer. It carried a unique Austin vibe, with Indian painting and posters. The walls were decorated handcrafted embroidery wall hangings.A beautiful wood bar in the front, little booths with wooden frame and a tungsten light lamp on the side. The ceiling of booths is covered with Indian sarees giving whip In the Indian Dhaba ambience. Loved it!The tables were spacious and there is an indoor stage for live music/shows. Whip in has a huge covered patio out front with plenty of seating(backless benches), decent parking and a great staff. The only downside is- it is an order at the counter place causing the crowd to wait in line. The tailored menu of whip In has Tex-Mex/Indian mixed items like samosas, nachos, hummus etc. The food menu changes, it can be found sketched out on chalkboards above the bar. They had a pretty decent selection of vegetarian options. We ordered Thali plate and Channa Masala Dhaba bowl. Naan was dense, covered with butter/ghee. Hummus was tasty and veggies were fresh. Dhaba bowl is served with basmati rice and a side of coleslaw. Chana masala had rich flavours, not overly spicy. It goes well with rice or naan. Coleslaw was crunchy, tangy and mildly sweet. The pricing is average, a large selection of craft beer can be found on tap and the enormous selection of beers and wines to go. Must visit this place to experience the vibe and craft beers.

Surprised by the creative genius of this kitchen. Every dish kept getting better. The beers were excellent. Don't miss this when visiting Austin!

We visited Whip In after, funnily enough, finding a Buzzfeed article that recommended it as one of the top 35 things to do in Austin. It didn't disappoint in terms of ambience & decoration, and the food looked amazing. The beers were quite expensive, ranging from $6-$8, but considering that they were all local that was fine with us. There was some live music to enjoy and it wasn't too over crowded for a Saturday. Overall great little place with some good vibes.

We stop here every time we visit ATX. The atmosphere is laid back and fun. The food is consistently good. I wouldn't refer to it as purely Indian food; I think of it as a great fusion of Indian/Texas or Indianized dishes. One of my favorite dishes, for example, has been Mumbai Migas--scrambled eggs Migas-style, but with a curry kick. They have samosas, but they also have beef chili spiced up. So, it's not your auntie's Indian food, but it's definitely delicious, and they do have plentiful veg options. This is a must for visitors seeking the "weird Austin" vibe. It's very unique, and you'll have a hard time finding something similar anywhere else. Don't hesitate--just go!

Only in Austin will you find a combination microbrew tavern/wine bar/bottle shop/Indian restaurant. In for the F1 race at Circuit of the Americas and staying near the Austin airport, we found the Whip In and ended up eating there two nights in a row. It's on the southbound frontage road off I-35 just south of the Colorado River. The selection of tap beers has to approach 75 and is supplemented by bottled beers from all over the world. There is an eclectic selection of wines by the bottle, and by the glass pourings from the wine bar. Live music in the evening both inside and in the outdoor seating area. Food specialty is Indian cuisine (or maybe Tex-Indian), but there are also American picks. This is about as funky as it gets. Don't miss it.

I recently went with some friends and one of them was going to get thrown out because of some stupid rule she was not informed about... Then the waitress decided he could stay if he paid extra.. That is crazy. I left before I insulted someone.. Will not recommended to anyone

This place serves eclectic food and offers live music, i.e., it personifies Austin! They serve Indian-Mexican fusion cuisine. I ate the goat chorizo. Definitely not something I'd ever imagine would go together, but it was delicious.

Very good beer selection. Pretty good food. Very limited seating. Try to leave before you need to visit the bathroom. House brews are pretty good, but some inane Texas law prevents them from selling them in growlers (they can only sell growlers of beers they bought from other brewers). It was raining when I was there, and the roof (or something) was leaking onto the bar.

This place has grown up fast, from a convenience store where people went to buy beer, munches, & rolling papers to a full fledged restaurant, beer bar, and wine bar. It is one of my favorite spots, but the rapid tradition has caused a few growing pains. For example, they need to add more than one bathroom now that they are serving so many people. The place itself is so delightful; the decor is fun, pretty, and charming. When you walk in, you definitely get the feeling that this place is unique and so very Austin. The inside is most delightfully set up, and the outside is warm and welcoming, with bright red picnic tables, and sweet dogs are welcome here (on leashes, of course). The beer selection is rather large--they have many craft and local beers on tap and in bottles at the bar, and many more that you can purchase to take home. With the tap selections, there is a slight tendency toward just too many pale ales or IPAs. I know they are popular, but I would like to see a bigger selection, especially of those on the smoother side, the ones that are easier on the palate. Their wine selection is also good, both to drink there and to take away. The food is something I really crave. When you find the dishes you like, you will crave them, too. The "Indianized" beef and beer chili is outrageously good, very spicy! It has local, grass-fed, no hormones beef, and it is really tender. My favorite way to have it is on a "panaani," a panini on naan, served with feta and cilantro chutney. So lovely! They also make a South Asian Frito pie with this chili, Fritos, cilantro chutney, black beans, and sour cream. I think it is their most popular dish. I also love their dal puppies, fried spicy dough balls, but made from lentil flour. Yummy. There are many vegetarian choices, too. The menu is still a bit uneven. For my tastes, the samosas have far, far too many peas in them--that is all I taste, almost. I tried the Indian-influenced chicken fried steak with ginger and other delicious flavors, but the batter was so salty that it was inedible. I have been too frightened to try it again. But try the breakfast naans--they are wonderful! They really have enough business that they need to think about either starting table service for outdoors or setting up a register out there. It makes sense. I love this place, though. Despite the few rough edges, it is great.

100% come to this laid-back place for the Indian Nachos and awesome happy hour. Bunches of beers, wine, and cider on tap for $4. Good outdoor seating too.

Drove by this place for years and finally decided to stop. What a cool place. A fantastic array of beer selections. An Indian style restaurant with many options of rice bowls and naan sandwiches. Nice atmosphere. Good parking. Has takeout if you are in a hurry.

Arrived in town late & needed a quick bite and some good beer - and what a find! It almost seems like this place is singlehandedly be intent on keeping Austin WEIRD. A combination roadhouse (great live music), liquor store, brewpub, wine bar & delicious random food representing a funky Anglo/Indian/mex feel? And it WORKS! All the staff know (& love) their particular beers but also willing to steer you away from some that may not be your style. Fun & friendly clientele, great vibe - made a bunch of new friends just hanging out here! Austin IS weird & this place is an example of why it's great!

Place was so cool and unique and your probably thinking that this place is just like any place in Austin. Well Austin has its more than fair share of different eateries and bars but from my stop and my local friends confiding in me that this is one the best and their favorites what else can be said. Great beer selection and next time gotta try some food. It is defiantly a future stop for me.

My sister and brother-in-law suggested this spot while I was in town and it did not disappoint. They have a top notch beer selection on tap, in bottles and a great patio area to enjoy the tasty Indian food! This place has a great Austin flavor.

This place is up from my son's apartment. Great selection of beers, wines, and cider. Do have food while you're here. Best tasting cole slaw I have ever had!

Funky and dive restaurant with great food and beers. Don't let the decor inside fool you. The staffs are friendly and attentive. There is an outdoor seating with bar and live music. They only serve wine and beer. Get the Whip-Indianized Nachos El Milagro tortilla chips, braised black beans, Kashmiri pepper queso, pico de gallo and cilantro chutney, Lamb Samosas Indian spiced mashed potatoes, peas, and ground lamb filling. Served with cilantro chutney, fries and Cheesecake.

Recommended by our Airbnb host and a great place. Indian fusion food, an amazing selection of beers and wine, and the night we were there a great r and b band live. The chicken 65 and chicken tikka were amazing, as was the biggest samosa I’ve ever seen. Friendly efficient staff. Not the fanciest place, but for all the above reasons it’s well worth a visit and we will go again. Highly recommended.

Our first night in Austin our friend picked us up at the airoort and recommended Whip In. I am very glad she did. I ordered the children's menu grilled cheese and fries. The skinny fries were delicious and the grilled cheese was on indian pita bread. Very good meal.

Wow! What a selection! So fun and casual...very Austin! A friend and I stopped in for a beer after work one night. We ordered an appetizer and two drinks and had a blast. Nice outside tables too. Highly recommend!

Others have called Whip In "off-beat", unique, quirky. In addition to those descriptors, I will add "Good". This place is supposedly run by an Indian (Asian) family and has evolved from a package store to a bar to a restaurant, etc. It has done all of that. Whip In has a good selection of draft and bottled beers at the bar, and a rarity at most places, wine on tap. However, during the week (M - F) they have an Asian/Indian influenced cuisine which is surprisingly good. On this trip, I also tried Torchys and my review here emphasizes that the tacos have no (or very little) taste. Not true of Whip In ..... the food here is does have taste and its good. Beyond the main lunch offerings which are all good, there are little things that are a surprise. They say on some offerings that you will get coleslaw. You might expect that it will be a cabbage and mayonnaise combination, but you would be wrong. Cole Slaw here is a red cabbage concoction with a lite, sweet and sour dressing which is quite good, and quite different. Do yourself a favor, and try Whip-In for an off-beat but good lunch. Weekends don't offer the Asian - Texas offerings, and only offer an American brunch series which seems to miss what is great about this place.

A colleague took me to Whip In during a brief stay in Austin and I'm so glad she did! I loved the quirky vibe of the store/restaurant and the creative menu options. They also had quite a good selection of alcohol options. If you're in the area and you like quasi-Indian food, give it a try.

We enjoyed the vibe, the food, and the beer. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Our son found a new favorite beer thanks to sampling it here.

I am in town for a meeting so ventured out solo and chose whip in to have dinner. I had a blast sitting at the bar and having conversations with the people there. Had an excellent beer recommendation. I also had the fried rice combination plate. It was amazing so much flavor. The rice was perfect with a hint of garlic and each of the meats was cooked perfectly! Very happy with my choice tonight!

A beer flight let me try 4 of their beers. There were 10 or so more I would have liked to try. Food was good, although not overly generous portion size. Maybe I was just very hungry after my beer! Lots of vegetarian choices. You order at the counter and the food is brought to your table. There is a courtyard in the back but it looked like just picnic tables so we stayed inside. Eclectic Indian subcontinent decor. Things a little random and mismatched. Typical Austin from what I've been able to ascertain.

Whip In is a very local haunt alongside South I-35 in south Austin. You may walk in and think it's a bit sketchy, but reality is it's a very friendly and relaxing local gathering place. The package side of Whip In has a first rate selection of bottled wines for drinking on the patio, in the lounge, or taking home to enjoy. The carefully chosen local beers and wines on tap is equally impressive. Small plate Indian snacks and a few other goodies round out the offering. Mix all the above with the local musicians on stage in the lounge and you can have a darn near perfect evening. This is a slice of life that's disappearing in Austin, so experience it while you can.

The Whip In is arguably the coolest beer bar in Austin. They have dozens and dozens of beers on tap and some of the city's best Indian food, all served in a convenience store/cowboy bar type atmosphere. Also, the outdoor seating is phenomenal.

This unassuming place off the highway has great indian food, amazing atmosphere and live music. Tons of microbrew beers on tap and to buy in bottles. Service was fast, ordered at the counter and received my food within 10 minutes. Cool places like this are the best part about Austin. Will absolutely be back anytime I am in town.

This came recommended to me by an Austin native. Incredible draft beer list (although I was there a few days after the SXSW excitement had ended, and many of the kicked taps had not yet been restocked), cool, laid-back vibe and good Indian-inspired cuisine. It's a little market, too, so you can stock up on beer, wine and assorted sundries.

Indian food, micro brews, huge wine wall selection, fun staff, live music...they've got it all. This is the place to go when you're in Austin. They offer beer flights, wines by the glass, and delicious affordable food. Sunday night was packed, and the regular musician that night was great. :o) Daniel Patrevito sounded like Elton John on the piano and great vocals. He plays every Sunday night from 9-11pm. Go here people, and have as much fun as I did. :o)

Great selection of beers that changes regularly. Tap take overs and pint nights keep things interesting. I'm told there is music here... I don't do crowds so I don't stick around for that kind of thing!

A longtime Austinite friend took us to the Whip In which is, I suspect, how one would find this place. From the outside, it still looks like the convenience store it once was, and kind of still is. The lamb vindaloo was hot and good as well as good and hot. The naan bread seemed a little more like a tortilla than naan bread to me, but made the perfect wrap for burger sliders which were delicious. This place is quintessential Austin. Weird, tasty, cheap, live music, young people, craft beers, generous bartenders, bacon and vegan on the same blackboard menu-Austin. I can't wait to go again.

Come for the beer, stay for the music, and eat some food while you're there. We thought that this might be a dinner destination with good beer and music. We were wrong. This is a dive bar. However, the food was interesting and pretty tasty, although a bit over salted. The beer selection was nice. If you're just looking to drink beer, no problems. Whatever you do, don't order the ice cream for dessert. It is literally one scoop of ice cream for $6. Service was friendly.

Part restaurant, part grocery, part convenience store, part bar in a former gas station, this place is no frills and funky, but oddly charming. A large group of us ate breakfast here--you order at the cash register and are given a number for food delivery. Everyone's food was excellent, but with a Texas-Indian flair. Unfortunately it took almost 30 minutes to get the coffee going on a Sunday morning, but the servers graciously gave us expresso to water down until the coffee was brewed. The bar is almost as big as the dining area, so apparently they do a good business in beer and wine (bottles available in a refrigerated case in the grocery section). There's a dance floor/stage in the corner, so perhaps there's occasional entertainment too? Be forewarned: there's only one bathroom, in the typical gas-station style. Outdoor seating is available, but not on this cold and rainy day.

Great beer selection and Indian food. It's got a 70's vibe to it. Outdoor patio and indoor seating. They often have live music. Good prices.

As a beer fan, I never travel without finding the best beer locations in town. Whip-In is a brewpub, wine bar, eatery and beer/wine superstore all rolled into one. Great selection of house brewed beers, awesome guest taps. Very funky India meets Austin décor and feel inside, very enjoyable and the kind of place that puts the "Keep Austin Weird" on your brain. Can't recommend enough or wait to get back...

Love this place. Just got to visit every time we come through Austin. Food is awesome, beer selection is fantastic.

I highly recommend this place. It was a weird mix of Indian/Tex Mex food but I can't wait to visit Austin again just so I can come here. I love the ambience, my red chicken curry was delicious!

Used this as our local for a few days in Austin. Really friendly and helpful staff, a fantastic selection of beers on tap and more beer and wine for sale in their small supermarket section. Good basic food too

IKR the whip in, but we had a great time trying different variations on Punjabi (?) Cuisine with a lot of Texas thrown in. Service is a little slow, but the music and the company was great.

When I went to Austin, I consistently heard that this was a must try. I definitely agree!! Seating can get a bit tricky as it can get super crowded, but with a bit of creativity and patience you can make it work. Great variety of food and the seasoning was amazing. They also had craft beers and a little grocery area attached.

Friendly staff, fresh ingredients, convenience takeout, and separate wine and beer/cider bars. Insider Tip: Buy a $20-40 bottle of wine and share. They have a very good selection of varietals you won't find at HEB.

An Austin native friend of my son recommended it, as you were looking for something innovative and different, so we tried this Indian style/Tex-Mex influenced eatery. There was a good selection of local Texas beers. Some of the dishes were a little ambitious but overall it's pretty good. There was some live music which was quite good and everyone appreciated the artistry.if you want to try something out of the ordinary you should try it.

Greta selection of beer and delicious food. Word of advice.....take all the Obama & Michelle crap off the wall. Seeing that crap made it hard to keep the food down! Other than that...great place!

This is an Austin place for sure. You will fit in if you have a beard and tattoos. It's a bar that serves a variety of food including Indian , Mexican, and sandwiches. All the beer and wine you could imagine. Don't be scared by it's appearance.

What's not to like? Fantastic food with an Indian flair, huge beer selection, and a semi-new wine bar (also with lots of choices). Live music on some nights and a great vibe. It's a favorite.

I recently visited Whip In and really liked the hippie ambience. Whip In's menu is a fusion of Indian, american and mediterranean food and they offer a wide variety of Indian craft beer's. Our group ordered a lot of stuff and I tried all the items ordered. I personally liked the "Travis Heights" which is a samosa filling sandwich wrap. Also, their chana daal rice bowl was really tasty! I would have given them five stars but I am unable to do so because the coffee I ordered came out to be really terrible and also the service could really improve as one of my orders never came out until I notified the staff that I haven't received it.

Found this place on Yelp as it was close to our hotel. We went on a Sunday evening-there was live music, good music, and super good food. Wish we had a place like this in Seattle. :)

This place is pretty non-descript on the outside, but the inside was a pleasant surprise. When I walked through the doors, I thought that I was in a liquor store. People were queued up with various bottles of wine or beer at the checkout counter. I took a turn and stepped into a bar / restaurant. There were two bar areas. One served over 75 different types of beer on tap, and the other served a variety of quality wines. I chose to go to the "liquor store" and bought a bottle of wine and brought it back to the table. I was in for a treat when a local musician got on stage and strummed his guitar as he sang his original songs, some Bob Dylan, and JJ Kale. I wanted something to eat, and again, I was astounded to discover that the menu was made up of a variety of Indian cuisine. I had the hummus served with fried naan-- delicious. Everyone should visit this little gem in Austin.

Went here on a Friday to have a drink and a snack, had some cider/ mojito drink, very good, waitstaff super nice, they pay special attention to customer service, Will definitely come back when in town. Would like to try some food.

This was so unexpected. Definitely an Austonian hidden jewel, wihth great salads, Indian rice bowls and amazing wines. Very popular place with those "in the know". But on an access road off of the highway.

Ate here on my last night in Austin and it was super cool - fun vibe, live music which made for a fun night.

We went on a Monday night and saw many great singers/musicians. The food is Indian Fusion and offers some interesting selections. There is an extensive beer menu and many excellent beers on draft.

Loved the opportunity to enjoy Indian Fusion food on Whip In's super cool patio. The naan is so good, my falafel was pretty spicy- but I didn't mind. Service was attentative and the place was super chill. Would definitely recomend and will be back.

Great outdoor seating area. Superb selection of beer including house microbrews. Funky Indian Southwestern Asian menu. Casual. Pick up drinks to go.

I regret not knowing about this place earlier. Although this is an Indian themed brewery, beer/wine shop and restaurant, not many Indians know about it. Hopefully this review will help... I only have good things to say! Decor - Absolutely loved it. It was sooo Austin, with the wildest exotic Indian paintings, posters. The walls were decorated with Indian sarees and traditional wall hangings. they have some nice little booths with cute table lamps on the side, lot of open outside space as well if you want to avoid the music. Food - Absolutely loved it. Plenty of vegetarian options. They have the freshest naan and service sandwiches and sliders in them. Travis Heights was to die for. They have daal sliders, they are like fried lentil patties in a nan sandwich with coleslaw and masala fries - which was really good too. Their chana masala was the most highly reviewed dish, but was average comparing with Indian standards. Service - Again, very nice. We reached there only 5 minutes before kitchen close time, but the waitress took her time to explain the menu options, beer options and food was served pretty quick. Music - There was a band playing some soft rock and some popular songs. There were many people who enjoyed it. Beer - We tried three of their brewed varieties, Shiva's stout, their Heffeweizen and one other. All three were really nice and fresh from the keg. They seem to have a nice collection of wine too.

I just assumed from the outer appearance that Whip In was a liquor store or something. What a surprise when you get inside. As my colleague stated at lunch, "This is a place you come back to because the flavors are so unique." We were here for a business lunch so we didn't try the beers (which are many). Try the specials, try the hummus, try the sandwiches, try the specials for dessert. It is ALL good. It is a funky Indian fusion but nothing too exotic. I had the Woodland sandwich - lick-your-fingers deliciousness. The pork was cooked to perfection and the slaw and feta was a super combination. And, excellent naan. I also have to rave about the desserts. We shared a peach pie that was so yummy, the crust especially! We were told that they even make the ice cream on site.

We were in town for a long weekend and sought out Whip-In because they were listed as having sour beers on tap and we love Indian food. There sours are awesome, and while their food is not what you'd find in a regular Indian restaurant, it's delicious and makes for a great meal. Portions aren't huge, which is nice. I had the goat sliders - great seasoning/flavor - 2 wrapped in naan and they came with their tasty spicy fries. The staff behind the bar also helped with the convenience portion of the building. They were very friendly and knowledgeable in helping us find the types of beers we were looking for both in the bar/pub area and in the convenience area. We visited on a Friday right as they opened, and they were not very busy yet, but as we left, the bar/pub area was full. If we lived in Austin, we'd make this a regular stop.

This fun place is so Austin. The setting is eclectic and colorful. We were there at lunch on a Saturday and my only disappointment was that their regular Indian menu was not available until 3 in the afternoon. However, their brunch offerings were tasty and different than the run of mill. The pianist/singer was a surprise treat and she provided a party atmosphere. We will definitely return to sample their regular menu. My brewer husband was hard pressed to choose only one beer to taste!

my visit to the Whip In was two fold. First was on a Monday night, it was pretty quiet and a good mix of people. it's much like a bodega that also has a craft beer bar and a restaurant in it. They have a little bit of everything. On Monday night, the bartenders were all very helpful in beer selections except one who was REALLLLLY rude. I hope he doesn't work there anymore because he was really awful and almost had my companion and I out the door after one drink, but we just avoided him the rest of the night and it was all good in the end. Heads up on some of their selections that come in smaller glasses because of their higher alcohol content, the rude-tender didn't let us know that and we were left to our own devices. The other people behind the bar were very communicative making sure we knew what we were ordering. They have a great outdoor area and it looked like a little stage for performers, but the music was inside on this night. The performer that night was a guy named Ben and it was a great surprise. He played a bluesy, southern type bayou rock. I was definitely into it. We had eaten our weight in Thai earlier that day so we didn't indulge in the menu that night, but vowed to come back the next day for lunch. This was a Tuesday afternoon, we got coffee some hummus and split the chili bowl. the coffee was delicious even though they were out of soy milk to make a latte. The hummus and cru d'ete were fresh. The chili bowl was very hearty with large cubes of beef and was seasoned well. the chefs at the Whip in definitely know what's up when it comes to food. All in all I really enjoyed both of my visits to the Whip In and would make a special trip back when I am in Austin next.

Today was my first visit to the whip in. They had live music and the atmosphere inside was fun. Countless draft beers and selections of wine. The food was good. It seems like a perfect restaurant for Austin. They have outside seating which is covered but open air. If you don't like smoke don't sit there as there were numerous people smoking and even though it was open air the smoke went from table to table. We will go back and we enjoyed our lunch.

Great breakfast brunch with mimosas and handcrafted beers amongst great friends. Mumbai Miga's and grits and dishes with say Indian flair. Went there to see if they had any of their wonderful Award winning ESB made with Earl Grey tea on tap. They were out alas, but we all had a great brunch and libations!

A friend of mine who used to live in Austin mentioned this place. I've been twice now after diving at Mansfield Dam. I love the Korma with garlic naan. There are several good beer choices and it appears wine too. This has become a favorite place to stop in for a bite and a couple beers on the way out of town. The only negative is the parking is challenging. It is right off a feeder road and not much room to turn around, so if you pull in you end up trying to back onto a busy feeder road and zoom off before traffic comes. I try and back in to make egress easier.

What a friendly, fun, fabulous place, so glad we ate here. Huge choice of beers and the bartender happily let me try first. We ordered the chick pea curry and butter chicken, and both were excellent. We didn’t have the naan bread but wished we had as it looked and smelled delicious. The venue is a little quirky, in a good way, and we loved the vibe. We are seniors from England, we don’t have tattoos or beards (as mentioned is previous reviews) but we certainly didn’t feel out of place and were made to feel very welcome. We came away very happy. Thanks guys, you’re awesome !

It had been awhile since I'd been here and they've really ramped up this place. There are now more than 70 beers on tap. On a Friday night, the place was jamming. The bartender was Austin friendly and cheerful, letting me sample several beers before choosing. If you don't like beer, there was also a wine bar. The food was Austin Indian - inexpensive and delicious. They also have a large takeout beer and wine retail shop. It ain't fancy, but it sure is fun.

We stopped in here for lunch/drinks when we first arrived in Austin. Beer selection is fantastic and the bar tender was very knowledgeable. Food was good, sort of a unique combination of themes. The staff and fellow patrons also gave great advice to plan the rest of our trip.

Awesome selection of beer on tap, delicious Indian food, cool vibes, and an excellent wine and beer take home selection! Not an overdone/trying too hard to be cool kinda place... it just authentically is.

The atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable. The draught beer selection was substantial and the bartender helpful with advice and tasters. Dinner was flavorful and prepared exactly as requested. It seemed to me like a mix of southern and Indian. I am not a big Indian fan and enjoyed Whip In.

It is hard to categorize Whip In. It is a small grocery, bar, and restaurant. Very laid back. Indian style food, with a Texas flair. We went for breakfast and both meals were tasty with a slight curry seasoning. For later in the day, they have a large wine selection in the grocery and a large beer selection at the bar. We went on a tip from a local friend.

Was VERY busy on a Sunday evening. Wanted to go somewhere prior to going to a concert. Hang out, eat and have some cocktails. It was a cold evening, so did not want to sit outside. It was so crowded we felt obligated to let the table turn. Did not realize it was a grocery/bar/restaurant in that order. Food was very good.

Awesome! Indian-Texan fusion. Delicious wraps. Charming atmosphere. I will definitely be coming here every time I visit Austin!

I had a somosa, it was huge and delicious, and the lentil curry was fabulous. This place is a super cool beatnik kind of place, where there is good food ($$) and a good beer and wine selection. There is a good mix of local music.

My wife and I were driving from San Antonio and Austin, and stopped here for a break and a beer. Cool vibe with a nice seating outside and inside. We didn't eat, but the guy next to us did and his food smelled fantastic. Really nice beer selection.

It’s a typical Austin kind of place. Think of a restaurant/liquor store. Went during lunch but saw a stage so I’m guessing live music. Had a goat burger. Never had one before so it was something new. It was okay. It could just be me though. Portions were decent but a little on the pricey side.

If correct they serve India style foods here. I haven't had any food, but it does look good and smells fantastic. My main reasoning for visiting Whip In is the craft beer selection is great. I believe they have close to 35 taps of various regional and out of area micro brews. Staff is always friendly and seems to be knowledgeable about what they are serving in micro brews.

Great food, awesome atmosphere, plenty of beer and wine to choose from, great music. Def recommend this place to anyone and everyone for a late night bite to eat or a night on the town. Indian infusion eclectic style place.

My experience with this place is that any time I've ever gone in there they've always had what I needed they specialize in unusual and unique wines, food to go, cigars, they even have live music there. It is kind of like a Trader Joe's in a lot of respect. A good one stop shop for those things you might need for that friend who is stopping by for a glass of wine and some cheese and perhaps a cigar. You won't be disappointed I definitely highly recommend you check it out. A good place... No actually a great place. Check it out!

Found this place when looking for a place to grab a beer after picking up a friend at the Austin airport. Built from an old filling station they now pack in over sixty taps of craft beer, roughly 300 bottled crafts along with wine and food from India if you're hungry. Along with a couple of unique craft drafts we were treated to a number of samples by a rep from Middleton Brewing outside of San Marcos. Easy to get to. Definitely on the "Visit Again" list.

They take your credit card to run a tab and give you a number to stick on your table so a server knows where to bring your food/drinks. One person at the cash register to take your order. This is fine at lunch when it is reasonably quiet. And we enjoyed lunch sufficiently that we returned for dinner a couple days later. Crowded. Line at register. Get order in after awhile. Want more beer. Have to wait in long line. Decide to cash out instead. Ridiculous. But the food. Barton Springs panini. Zambian corn bowl. Chicken fried steak- all seasoned to provide a nice bite without obscuring the underlying flavors. Really really good. Too bad they can't figure out how to serve their customers as well as they have figured out how to prepare great flavors. Also of note, they have a great selections of wine with a woman who can truly help with selections.

I dream about coming back here to eat all the time. I just don't live close enough. Great little hole in the wall with killer prices on food and the quality is GREAT. Had their Chicken curry special, basically licked the bowl clean. Huge beer/wine selection. The servers are super friendly and helpful. Don't let the sketchy location or old building scare you. THIS IS A MUST EAT AT IN AUSTIN!

Great dive bar with a little market. enjoyed some beer on tap and fun with friends. Great place to hangout with your friends or group. didnt eat but the food looked great.

This is a place that should not be missed - a classic Austin hangout. The food is some of the best Indian in town and they have many local beers on tap, and tons of cans and bottles. GREAT music playing and lots of funk in the atmosphere.
Good Food & Dive Bar for Locals
Food choices are weird, varied and delicious. Indoor seating as well as casual patio where dogs are welcome. All the patrons were cool and friendly. Austin is a super friendly city!
