Enjoyable!

By Rosetwig |

We had an early dinner in a Sunday evening, and were pleased with the food, ambiance and service. We were less impressed with the pizza than on our last visit, and found the single raviolo dreadfully overpriced, but loved the other pasta and craft cocktails.

Great food and space

By Meg F |

Great bar and cocktail list. Gorgeous space. Everything we tried was delicious - seafood mixto, grilled octopus, the brick chicken and the pizzas ( I loved My Jawn, my boyfriend is still thinking about the pumpkin pizza) Grab the couch in front of the fireplace if its open. I have gone back several times.

First time visit

By LarryB412 |

First time visit for early weekday dinner. It was all excellent. Nice vibe in the place and our 5 dishes were all great—beets and octopus to start. Then raviolo and agnolotti— both very fine and sweet and tasty. We then shared the fish with asparagus entree, the asparagus part was quite interestingly and the fish very good. Nice wines and good service. We’ll be back.

Excellent food and service to match.

Excellent food and service, highly recommended! The pasta is fresh and cooked perfectly. The food was just outstanding. Couldn’t be any better.

Poor service

By Eura_ travel |

The food isn’t anything out of this world! And one of the waiter was arrogant as heel to avoid, apparently it is all over the place in Philadelphia that the people are antipathetic! I won’t come back even if they give me a gift card no thanks !

PIZZA, PIZZA, PIZZA

By Brittany S |

I am a huge pizza foodie and recently heard they had some top notch pizza and wanted to check it out. We came around noon on a sunday so the brunch menu was only available so they have only 3 options to choose from. We ordered the Speck and egg which was out of this world!!! and also the mushroom and burratta- both were out of this world. We order the side of potatoes and they were sooo good also. 2 Glasses of prosecco for me and 2 mimoasa for hubby over 100 with tip!! def on the pricey side but everything was sooo good- cant wait to go back for dinner and check out the dinner options!!!

Disappointment

By GeorgeRob9 |

I went to this restaurant with high expectations. I had enjoyed dining at Il Pitore in the past. The menu seemed to be a combination of Vernicks and Osteria, but the food did not reach either restaurant's level. How many restaurants do we need in Philadelphia featuring the same wood grilled food? The kitchen was not accommodating with a request asking to eliminate one ingredient in a pizza. The wine list was overpriced as is usual in Philadelphia restaurants.

Can’t wait to return

By Nancy G |

We came here on a Thursday evening for dinner. We were greeted and seated promptly at a lovely table in the coal fired oven portion of the dining room. It was lovely. Our appetizers were the octopus and the seafood mix to. The seafood mix to was wonderful and perfect for sharing. The octopus was the best we’ve had hands down. Our drink choices were a French martini, which was delicious, and a Oxbow farmhouse pale ale which my husband liked so much he ordered it throughout the meal. Our entrees were the tortelonni and the duck breast. The tortellonni was good. It was a pasta filled with a delicious veal mixture. The duck breast my husband ordered was outstanding. It was so tender that you could cut it with your fork. Our server, Eva, was courteous and helpful. We will certainly be returning.

Once Was Enough

By YorktownBob |

Started poorly. Hostesses was not polite. Since we were early for our reservation we asked if we could sit on the patio and have a drink. She said if we went to the patio she would cancel our reservation. Obviously we waited. When my guest was in the restroom the hostess insisted on seating me. I asked to wait for my guest. I was told no, and that I had to be seated immediately and that the hostess would show my guest to the table. This did not happen and my guest and I had to search for each other. Also our reservation was for the dining room and we were seated in a very loud bar. The food was average and the server was fine.

Cool environment delicious napolitano pizza, great service

By Kathleen C |

We really enjoyed lunch sitting outside, alfresco. The inside is very cool of this 1800s establishment. The pizza was super light, like it came from Italy. Delicious crust! Very interesting and delicious toppings. Great service!

Fishtown Goes Big-Time

By Bruce W |

What a treat! Read so many great review of Wm. Mulherin Sons that my expectations were high but guarded. When we arrived, I immediately liked what I saw. This is a very attractive place, with ownership that went to great lengths (...and $$$) to create a beautiful, but totally appropriate renovation of this mid 19th century brick commercial building. The interior in particular is stunning, with heavy oak foyer and arched paned windows that create an ambience of period warmth (1800's). The bar is beautiful and fitted with all manner of copper shakers, stirrers, measuring cups, etc. Even the straws are made of metal (not plastic!). So....the FOOD. Outstanding throughout. Be prepared to go heavy on the pasta dishes, because the are to die for. Everything is served "family style"...so don't get possessive over any particular dish.....just order another! Service was equally up to the level of everything else. Only complaint....the MUSIC sucked. Too loud and not appropriate for such an elegant surrounding. Play classic jazz folks.....it would be far more becoming to your restaurant. Also.....be prepared for this place to be very busy....and it can get noisy too. Reservations highly advised.

Outstanding.

By CH15 |

They not only do food extremely well but also do service better than most. We recently dined with them outside and the variety of food was excellent - from pasta to pizza to great drink selections and incredible desert offerings. But what got us our ‘wow’ moment was the service of their staff and their management. There was an unexpected ‘issue’ and they all handled it with grace and care. Well done to the team.

Truly great food, professional wonderful service

By Gery S |

Every selection ranged from very good to outstanding - and we sure ordered a lot of selections lol. Our waitress was impressively knowledgeable and engaging but never over the top. The cocktails are creative and decently priced. Even the bartenders are some of the best in the city should you spend some time there as well. Great vibe throughout.

Fishtown star

By Garett S |

The building located basically under the El and near several other oddball dives stands out as a diamond in the rough. And its getting national attention now. Inside, the restaurant is packed all hours of the day, and for good reason. The farm to table theme produces unique dishes that are well prepared and easy to share. Starters such as hamachi crudo, beet salad, and roasted cauliflower were all great. There are interesting pizzas on the menu, but honestly just find out what the special pizza of the day is - guaranteed to have different ingredients that are even better than the standard pies. Everything tastes fresh from the pasta dishes, to even something as simple as the brick chicken. A great experience from start to finish.

Nice place, slower service, crappy cowardly management on 7/31

By Stevethecamper |

This place is fine, the drinks were excellent, the atmosphere is nice. We sat outside in the garden area. We were here for a pre-dinner meeting before dining at Lazer Wolf around the corner. My daughter and I arrived prior to my other daughter and her boyfriend. Our waiter served us water after taking our drink order, and while doing so spilled a complete glass of water on me, soaking my crotch, pant leg and one sock. During the clean up of the water ( I cleaned my chair and pants) the waiter said the drink was on the restaurant. I neither complained nor did I ask for the free drink, the server offered it up 3 times, I said thank you. My other daughter showed up after this adventure, and her drink order took over 20 minutes. We had our drinks, and were presented with the check when the waiter said his manager would not buy my drink. Our check was $82.30 with tip. I do not care about the free drink, my problem is the gut-less, cowardly manager who did not come to our table to say he would not buy my drink, instead sending his/her server to give me the news, a server counting on my tip. I tipped him 20% and said ok. I spend a fair amount of money in the fishtown area, there are a lot of great places to go. LMNO, Evil Genius, Beddia, Loco Pez, LLoyds and so on. I go to them all with family, and entertaining business clients. My guess is spending $1500+ a month. We spent $350 at Lazer Wolf after this. I don't care about my $16 drink, which was good when I got it. But if your a manager of a place like this, you should at least visit your guest after something like this happens. Ownership has a training opportunity here! Maybe you should review you standards for managers as well. I'll suspend my visits here for awhile.

Excellent

By BC-7 |

Lively restaurant with a super friendly, fun vibe and excellent food. We started with the focaccia and crispy octopus as apps, both were amazing. All of our pasta dishes were also amazing. The gnocci was the best I've ever had, and I had the wild boar special with truffles, also fantastic. Drinks were also very good, and the service was excellent. It was a bit on the loud side, so definitely not a place for a quiet date night.

“Stumbled Upon”

By Roy D |

We stumbled upon this place on our way to another restaurant we had a reservation at... my wife quickly canceled the reservation and we grabbed a seat at the bar. Katie the bartender was the best! The kitchen screwed up our order so bad we got our meal free and only paid for one round of drinks! We had the grilled chicken and the cavatelli pasta, each was scrumptious! The pasta was soft and lightly finished while the chicken was perfectly grilled with some side vegetables garnishings. Just remember take a Picture of where you park your car because parking in the Fishtown is terrible and at night everything looks the same on the streets.

Good place for lunch!

By LD |

We went for lunch, and the asparagus salad and house cured grilled ham were standouts. The speck and egg pizza (which we got topped with black truffle) was also very satisfying with its airy breadlike crust. The portion on the cappelletti was tiny, and the bucatini cacio e pepe benefitted from more pepper and could have been more al dente.

Really 4.5 stars. So good.

By cathycnh |

My daughter suggested this restaurant. We were visiting her in Philadelphia and were there for a special dinner. WE had to take an early reservation at 5:15, but it meant for a leisurely relaxed dinner, although the restaurant was busy and on the loud side. We ate in the back of the restaurant towards the windows on the side. I liked where we were placed. We had really wonderful servers and I am sorry I don't remember their names. Our meal and we shared tastes of almost everything was really delicious. Roasted cauliflower, cheese plate, the beet salad (I could have had only this and been very happy), sweet potato ravioli, all delicious. I had a so-so hanger steak. Only so-so because while I wanted it medium well, there was way too much char and too pink for me. It should have been cooked a bit slower. I had never had hangar steak and the flavor was really delicious. That is the reason for 4.5 not 5 stars. But for me, the meal of the evening was a veal ragout special that one in our party ordered. The flavor of this was so delicious and subtle. Outstanding and boy was I jealous. Why oh why didn't I order this? Boohoo. This should have a permanent spot on the menu. I am Italian and except for a bit overcooked pasta may have been the best pasta dish I have ever had. No gooey cheeses which I love, but so special.

Great food with a great atmosphere

By Joe P |

I enjoy this place so much I've been back 3 times in the span of a couple of months. Incredible variety to choose from pasta, seafood, chicken and pizza and the small plates are incredibly good. The ambiance is great. Our server Ashley was very enjoyable to talk with and throughout the night we must have had 6-8 people coming to our table. It's obvious they take great pride in serving their customers. We will be back!

CITY HIPSTER

By dmhorner |

Located In. “Up coming” area, the resturant is well decorated and the bar has a gasto pub feel with mixologists busy like bees creating concoctions before you he patrons, down side is you can’t get to watch them unless you get a “reserved” bar seat.. tho several remained open during the course of our meal. It’s trendy spot, out server Keith was excellent.!!! Excellent was the seafood mixto, hamachi krudo!! Tortellini was sooooo good had two orders! Their pastas are excellent!!! The hanger steak was very good but a lil heavy on salt... the sea bass was tasty!! ... don’t let them pressure you into ordering all at once... as we put an order in later and it came out in 10-15 min...all in all a trendy place with a lil bit of attitude for the area..but if you wanna hang with the hipsters.. then this is a good place!

Incredible!!

By Karen M |

Wow, this place is wonderful. The service, the atmosphere and the food are to die for. I would highly recommend this very attractive restaurant. Starting with the drinks, we both had a Broken Record, very good. Next came some of the best homemade bread that I had in a long time. The wood fired pizza was excellent but the pastas out did the pizza and bread. Husband had the homemade ice cream and I had the coffee pot de creme and both was very very good. I cannot wait to get here and try some other pizzas and pastas. What a find.

Popular spot in an up and coming neighbourhood

We tried this spot on a busy Friday night. It was incredibly busy, but the service was still prompt and friendly. The food was delicious.

Amazing in Every Way

By CityGirlWrites |

The only time I write a review is when a place I've visited makes a deep impression. Wm. Mulherin's Sons in Philadelphia is definitely in that category. If you have plans to be in Philadelphia in the near future, consider booking a table asap because the wait for a reservation there is about three months long. It is so long for very good reasons. Starting with the atmosphere... When you spot the restaurant from even a block away you get the sense that you might be in for a special experience. The building is freestanding - it's a restored stable or distillery that stands across from elevated train tracks in one of Philadelphia's trendiest neighborhoods, Northern Liberties/Fishtown. You step inside past heavy, velvet drapery and immediately you pick up on the vibe - casually sophisticated and cool in every way. The glowy lighting is right. The music (lots of bass and chill) is right. Even the conversations all around feel right. That might be an odd detail to mention but how many times have you been to a great restaurant only to have the experience ruined by awful acoustics accentuated by the sound of screeching voices from tables nearby? Or, equally awful, the sharp sound of plates and cutlery clanking loudly all across the dining room. We didn't encounter any of that during dinner at Wm. Mulherin's Sons, just good music and the warm tones of murmured conversations from what seemed like happily wine drunk patrons all around. The moment we were seated we knew we were in good hands. Three people were buzzing around us right away - the busboy offering filtered water, the waiter presenting us with menus and welcoming us and the unpretentious sommelier introducing himself. Then the fun really began. We started with signature cocktails, ordered a red wine from Tuscany and a Gavi and kept dishes coming to the table throughout the evening. Everything, from drinks to main courses, dessert and an Italian after-dinner aperitif, were recommended to us by the attentive staff who asked good questions to get a sense of our tastes before making any suggestions. I highly recommend letting the staff guide you through the menu and make suggestions - they are knowledgeable and seem like genuine foodies themselves. The pacing of the food as it was brought out, the flavors of everything that arrived at our table, the atmosphere, the interactions with the team of servers, even the lighting in the restaurant and the contrast of coziness inside with the cold, gritty, city view from the window by our table - everything blended so beautifully together to make this an unforgettable experience. It satisfied all the senses. It's a little bit difficult to describe but having dinner at Wm. Mulherin's Sons reminded me of my favorite restaurants from back in New York in the 1980s - the kind of places that created an atmosphere that you never wanted to leave and made you want to stretch dinner out for as long as possible - restaurants like Union Square Café, Arizona 206, MaryLou's and Gotham Bar & Grill. If you ever went to those restaurants, especially in their heyday, make a beeline for Wm. Mulherin's Sons. Make your reservation for when you know you will have time to linger because you will want to and go when you know you will have a little extra with which to indulge because it is not inexpensive. It's rare to fall in love with a restaurant but I think I did with this one. Hope you will get to discover it for yourself and hope your experience will be as stellar as ours turned out to be.

Went here with my daughters for brunch. The food was excellent, the drinks were amazing and the staff were the best. We had a great time there.

Food excellent a few drawbacks

By Karen |

The food was excellent !! The restaurant had an interesting menu that appeals to a variety of patrons. The veal Tatar on toast one of my favorites and the pizza was to die for. Our waiter did an incredible job of explaining the menu and didn't steer us wrong with his recommendations. Here is why it didn't get 5 stars. Unless you are eating like my husband and I do, sharing every plate it would get annoying having your food come out at different times. I believe there are different kitchens that is why it is not synchronized. The only time it bothered us was with our main courses so we shared the chicken first(amazing), then my pasta. The second drawback is the noise level. With just two of us it was ok but if you are looking for a place to go on a date it wouldn't be my first choice. Also, for a large group it would be difficult to hear anyone other than those right around you. I would probably sit outside next time if possible to eliminate the noise. I will definitely return despite the drawbacks because I enjoyed the food so much. A great addition to the Philadelphia restaurant scene.

Excellent

By Paul S |

With four sharers at our table we had the opportunity to sample around the menu. From the octopus to the spicy jawn pizza to scallop pasta and lamb steak it was all outstanding. Very nice wine list

Porterhouse was awesome

By Bill M |

This is a hip place that was full on a Monday night. I liked the decor and the ambience. Lighting was perfect. First course was a crudo of scallop with osetra caviar, olive oil, and an apple/fennel purée. Portion of scallop was small and the osetra caviar was barely noticeable . About 3 specs of caviar for each slice of scallop. I liked the concept of the dish but wanted to taste more caviar! Second course was a pea/mint ravioli with sweetbreads. Again, the raviolis were fine but there were only 3 specs of sweetbreads, it seemed strange such a small amount. We shared the Porterhouse and it was perfectly cooked and sliced. For dessert we had the flourless chocolate cake which was good. Service was good though they did take a long time to bring first round of drinks. All in all a good experience. I would go back and try their pizza next time which I have heard is spectacular.

Great location, Excellent Food!

By Joanna W |

Went there this weekend for a birthday dinner. The atmosphere in the restaurant was great, very alive and friendly - not at all uptight. From the minute we arrived everyone was helpful with drink recommendations, food selections, and explaining the best way to order to ensure a pleasant dining experience. Everyone at the table ordered a pasta and a small plate and then we shared everything in the middle of the table. To ensure we had enough protein we also ordered the veal cheeks. Everything was amazing! The pasta was fresh and melted in your mouth, the veal cheeks were amazingly tender and perfectly cooked. We had Tuna Crudo for a small plate and it was so good, I could have eaten plates of just that. We also had the stuffed dates and the Octopus - both were very good but for small plates the Crudo was the best. For drinks we had a round of cocktails to start and then split a bottle of wine between us - I recommend both their cocktails which are blended extremely well and their wine selection is excellent. This was a great dining experience and we will definitely go back.

Incredible food and impeccable service.

By QuakerTruth |

It was our first time and it is now at the top of our restaurant favorites list along with one another restaurant in this section of Philadelphia. From the moment one walks in, it exudes warmth. Lots of brick, high ceilings, and a fire place in the dining room. This was truly a wonderful dining experience and we would go back in a heart beat. The food is incredibly delicious and the wait staff was gracious and didn’t miss a beat — one of the most professional wait staffs I have encountered. The pace of the food was timed perfectly. They even have 2 kitchens! This is the kind of place where sharing dishes is the key to take full advantage of the many taste sensations they offer. Don’t forget to order a delicious cocktail too. Be sure to make a reservation which might be hard to come by on the weekends so it’s good to plan in advance. If you want a very special dining experience, this is the place to go!

A must visit

By Justine1969 |

This was recommended by friends from Philadelphia. The atmosphere is busy and full of energy but despite that the service is individual and attentive. The menu is designed as a sharing experience so portions are not large. Food is simple but extraordinarily full of flavour. Octopus on any course is a must along with the rabbit tortellini. 3 courses, 2 dishes each course. Wine and cocktails came to a very reasonable $165. A must visit.

Need Reservations well in advance !

By Jimrad |

Mulherin's is top notch in every aspect. Innovative, delicious, and beautifully plated food, a cool, industrial vibe and a knowledgeable and attentive wait staff. We started with the veal tartare and hamachi credo small plates and both were delicious and something you shouldn't miss. We then shared the very good Maccheroni seafood pasta, and then the black bass and hanger steak for our main course. The bass was the best fish that we've had at a restaurant in years. We then shared the delicious flourless chocolate cake for dessert. This was a five star dining experience from start to finish and we can't wait to return. With 2 cocktails and one beer, the bill came to around $170 before tip. Not inexpensive but well worth it.

Wonderful Experience!

By Mark S |

Dining at Wm. Mulherin's & Sons is a perfect combination of excellent service, excellent food and terrific wine selections all in a very warm environment. This is a very rare combination indeed. Our Sommelier could not have been more helpful & professional and the selected wine was perfect with our food choices. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and was on top of every detail. We started with a delicious roasted cauliflower and then had the veal tartare toast which was beyond good! We had the speck & egg pizza with carmelized onions and potato's, again, delicious. For our main courses we had the Bigoli which is squid ink pasta, baby octopus, tomato and almonds and the pasta with lobster in a lobster broth; both terrific. We also tried one of the specials, the cavatelli with black truffels-wonderful. Sadly, we left no room for dessert but we'll try to do that on our next visit. This is a "must return to" restaurant!!

Excellent Food, Cool scene!

By JJJ1700 |

What a great find in Fishtown, right under the EL! 3 of us shared apps, pastas, and a butcher block porterhouse. All were very good. Pasta highlight was the handmade porcini cavatelli with shaved black truffles (we ordered a 2nd it was that god), a pasta special with tuna that was saltily delicious as well as a veal ragout tossed with thick homemade pasta strands. The porterhouse was cooked perfectly medium rare. Wine list is electic, slightly pricey, but the wine service was excellent. Will come back and definitely recommend.

Way overpriced

By Roger B |

A very trendy place with high prices for food that is at best mediocre. I had a hard time finding anything that wasn't weird. Service was so-so. Wine is especially overpriced. I will never go back. There are many better restaurants in fish town.

Class all the way

By mc_cheekymonkey |

Went on a Saturday evening around 6:30 and it was packed, there was even a queue to sit at the bar. But, totally worth it. The food and the service and atmosphere were all top notch. They've good great staff and a passion for what they do, and it really shines through

Wow - Just So Darn Good

By Tomas M |

A Philly friend suggested we try Mulherin’s as she had seen some very good reviews recently. It’s in Fishtown on Front St in a very trendy and upcoming area. I am so glad to made this suggestion. We started with a couple of apps. First we had the figs. O M G - they were so so good with the cream and nuts. It was so delicious and would be equally as awesome as a dessert! We also tried the seafood misto and it was equally terrific. Squid, octopus, mussels and more so well flavored and tasty. We moved on to the double Margarita pizza (think burrata to make it the double). It was excellent and made for a great share for 2-3 people to enjoy (12” pie and 6 slices). We then we on to try the pasta as a share. It too was delightful (the pasta with sausage). We had a little room left (not really) but everything was so good we had to share a dessert. We went for the chocolate molten thing (see pic)and it didn’t disappoint. It was deeply flavorful, not too sweet as dark chocolate should be and just great! Get it! It Mulherin’s is excellent and you need to check it out! And they have a fun bar area that looked lively as well. Go!

Enjoyable Dinner Date

By MeadowsValleyForge |

Described as the 'up-and-coming' area in Philly, I completely agree. Having dined mostly in center city and its suburbs, it was our first time in this neighborhood. The 18th century building is very rustic and converting this into a restaurant is the greatest idea. We had an early Saturday dinner (1st seating at 5 PM) and there was ample parking space on their designated area (between Lee and Front Streets). For a perfect summer cocktail, our server (Cona) suggested 'Four Corners' to my wife and she loved it. Since we planned on getting Hanger steak for the main course, we opted for a Lambrusco...perfect pairing Now for the best part, the food…Hamachi crudo is fresh and very tasty, although needs improvement in its presentation. It looks rushed and the slices are uneven. Vernick's version is still spectacular, visually and by taste. Their wood fired pizza comes highly recommended, so we got the Spicy Jawn. Crust is awesome (chewy and flavorful), perfect saltiness delivered by the pepperoni, right amount of spiciness by the long hot peppers and sharp provolone to complete the pizza. For pasta dish, we settled for the night's special egg noodle pasta with traditional cheese and olive oil sauce. Black truffle was available that evening for extra $10 and we should have done that for this pasta dish. Hanger steak cooked medium is moist, tender and good. However, the surface is a bit charred/burnt which I decided to scrape of...in an effort to remove that 'charcoal' taste and texture. Fried shishito peppers were good addition and the potatoes are just outstanding. Coffee Pots de Crème is pure heaven, not too sweet and the pistachio & almond adding crunch and texture. Regular coffee comes in small/tiny cups, nothing special and not hot enough for my preference. Next time I’ll hold off and just walk towards Frankford Ave., they are just a skip away from La Colombe’s huge café / patisserie .

Very nice spot in a very up and coming area

By HMCHUGH430 |

A great building in Fishtown right under the El train, all the excitment of an urban frontier but very safe and hip. The food is excellent much coming from a wood fireed grill or oven Have not had an dish I did not think was awesome

Some of my favorite pasta and pizza in the city

By Chris S |

They do both extremely well. We went as a group of four and ordered almost one of everything (except all the different pizza's). The food is rich and they have some great wines.

great food and service

By Heidi T |

Had a great meal and excellent service. The only "issue" was wasn't thrilled with where we were seated, but the food made up for it! Would highly recommend ad will definitely be returning! Can't wait!!

Warm and cozy by the fire.

By kimberly s |

Sat in lounge area which happened to be a couch with two chairs and a coffee table-perfect! Ordered several items off the Brunch menu and everything was delicious. cheese board had plenty of extras-nice serving sizes for the price. Pasta was good. And frittata delicious. Service was above standard. Very relaxed way to enjoy the meal. Will be back!

Pretentious and Pricey

By johnmZ8720PS |

My wife and I were drawn recently to Wm. Mulherin’s Sons Restaurant in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia by its sterling reputation for great dining featuring unique Italian dishes. Our experience did not match our expectations. We won’t be returning. Here is why. 1. Attitude. When I called the day prior seeking a 5:30 pm Saturday dinner reservation for Saturday, the reservationist was abrupt and dismissive about our chances of securing a seat at the bar for dinner. We tried anyway, arriving on Saturday at 5:30 pm and discovered many unoccupied tables in the bar area, including one that was not reserved until 7:15 pm. We secured seating there. Who knew? Who cared? Not the reservationist. 2. Expensive. Fourteen dollars for a pouring of Pino Grigio wine is expensive. Fourteen dollars for the small plate appetizer of Figs (grappa, mascarpone, hazelnut, nepitella, a.k.a. mint), a serving of two and one-half sliced figs, is expensive. ‘Nuff said! 3. Food Shortage. Upon my initial glimpse of the Cappelletti (little caps) pasta dish ($16.00) upon its arrival I humored myself with the thought: “Food shortage in the kitchen?” The total number of little caps of pasta did not break double figures (food rationing?). This is a meal that only one of Tom Wolfe’s skeletal “social-X-rays” would swoon over. Note: No salad, no soup accompanies one’s entrée. If you want servings akin to a customary, full-dinner meal at an Italian restaurant (i.e., entree, soup or salad, basket of bread, butter or olive oil dipping dish) be prepared to dine elsewhere. 4. Ambiance. Handsome interior and décor, a huge plus even though we came for the food. However, we were seated on the side of the restaurant closest to the overhead train tracks that rise above Front Street. Noisy, rumbling, roaring sounds of trains were part of our dining experience, as were a very close, cheek by jowl positioning of the surrounding tables. 5. Pretentious. Mulherin’s Sons is Philly-cool, hipster, millennial territory (it’s in trendy Fishtown). I was reminded when our waitress brought two, one-half slices of white bread (burnt, black crust included) to our table after we finished the Figs, and announced, “And now an Intermezzo.” Cute, clever. But it’s dinner, not a concert. Just one more bad note from the forgettable off-key performance by Wm. Mulherin’s Sons.

Disappointing

By Stephanie |

My boyfriend and I decided to go to this restaurant for our anniversary after reading that it was rated #8 on a list of 100 Best Restaurants in Philly of 2016. Some of our favorite restaurants in Philly were not even included on this list, so we had high expectations. After tonight, we agreed that neither of us would like to go back again. Let me start by saying that neither my boyfriend nor I are picky eaters whatsoever; we are both very easily pleased when it comes to food. That being said, we both thought the food was good, but we were expecting more than "good" considering the above-mentioned rating of the restaurant and the prices on the menu. We got the Seafood Mixto, the Lamb and Artichoke Pizza, and the squid ink pasta (I forget the actual name on the menu). I don't have much more to say about any of those things besides that they were simply good. No more, no less. For dessert, we got the poundcake and something else with "coffee" and "creme" in the name. My boyfriend thought the poundcake was dry. The coffee/creme thing literally just tasted like spoonfuls of caramel. I only took a second bite because I was trying to figure out if I just got a bad spoonful or if I was missing something. Nope, I was not missing anything, it was just gross. Our main issue with the restaurant was the seating. We were seated along a long wall in the dining room with a ton of tables for two side-by-side. We could literally touch the people sitting beside us without fully extending our arms. Right when we sat down we asked if we could move to a different table, and we were told there were none open, although we could see open tables in the bar room (which oddly enough seemed like a more intimate seating area than the area we were seated). Also, we went on a Monday night, so we were not expecting the restaurant to be completely booked. It was awkward and difficult to have an intimate dinner and conversation when you can hear everything the people next to you are saying. We heard the waiter's speech on "specials" three times. The waiters seemed to have a hard time squeezing in between tables to get plates and drinks down. The people sitting to the right of us, as well as the couple next over, also made comments about how close the tables were to one another. To end on a positive note, the waiter towards the end of our dessert asked how the food was. I'm not one to filter my thoughts much, so I honestly told him that neither of us liked our desserts. Next thing I knew, the manager was at our table telling us that they took our 3 drinks off our bill, as well as both desserts. We were honestly shocked by the customer service! I'm sure it was in an attempt to get me not to write a bad review (whoops), but the customer service was why I gave this restaurant a 3/5 and not a 2/5. So, overall, don't go here if you're looking for an intimate setting. Also, don't expect amazing food; just good. For both of us, it was definitely not worth the price and hype. We would recommend Oyster House in Center City or Belgian Cafe in Fairmount instead. You'll spend less money, and will get better food.

Friend Night

Beautiful setting and amazing food sets this up as the perfect brunch spot. The inside is airy, bright, with a wood / rustic aesthetic to swoon over about. Highly, highly recommend the speck and egg pizza! So delicious with the salty speck bits and runny yolk. The frittata was also very good.

Excellent Brunch

By MeadowsValleyForge |

On a rainy and cold Sunday, we tried Mulherin's brunch. We opted for a perfect & sumptuous selection of pizza, pasta, meat & sweetness...served family style Starting with Speck & Egg pizza, the runny egg yolk spread all over the pizza with slices of potato, heavenly! For me, much better than Spicy Jawn, which is only during dinner. Hangar Steak is moist, delectable & tender. Potato on the side is a bit salty to my liking...perhaps for others it is just ok. Tagliatelli is great, although the pancetta can make it a bit salty. Bucatini Cacio e Pepe is perfect mild pasta dish which is in contrast to Tagliatelli's saltiness. French Toast has this perfect blend of sweetness, Nutella with maple syrup plus the crunch of hazelnuts. I recommend saving this as your dessert!

Went last night for dinner Overall great experience but service could be improved Our reservation was for 9 Didn’t sit until 930ish They did comp our initial cocktails due to delay When we arrived had to wait and find someone to order drinks from Once sat down service was ok There was visibly some drama going on with a cook and the hostess - Our wine - sommelier was good but took a while to get wine Cheese plate arrived and server literally had no idea about names of cheeses let alone what they tasted like or any description Pizzas were amazing Octopus good Beets - average Broccoli rabe - decent Pastas were just ok- I remember them being better last time was there Bucatini tasted a little over cooked Calamari saffron pasta was very average with little flavor All wait staff was ok- definitely were not on top of clearing dishes etc For this quality restaurant expect better service and to keep drama away from patrons Will return but hope they improve Service should be impeccable

Love it.

By Todd Shissler |

This is one of my favorite dining experiences in a long time. The service was spot on and the quality was amazing. We loved everything that we had. Some of the cocktails were very creative and unique as were the pastas. We ate here with a group and had felt like we had almost everything on the menu. There was not one thing that was disappointing to us. We are already trying to make a reservation for a return visit. Truly a special experience. Eat here.

If you can only eat in one restaurant- this is THE one

By kelliec812 |

We had 4 fabulous meals in Philly, at some of the finest restaurants. Nothing compares to the bliss of feeling like you’re in a neighborhood restaurant...and they want you to enjoy your meal of 1, 2, or 5 courses. I loathe my Northeast 90 minute timed restaurant experience. I believe they would have happily let us stay at our table for 4 hours. We stayed for 3hours. We first enjoyed the fabulous broccoli rabe, cauliflower, and octopus appetizers that were out of this world. We moved on to house specialty lamb and artichoke pizza. And then finished with 3 pastas. Our only regret....not saving room for desert!

Solid spot - good food, great interior, somewhat loud

By helloceleste |

Wm. Mulherin’s Sons remains one of those Philly spots that is solid. Housed in a beautifully restored building, the ambiance strikes a balance between rustic charm and modern polish. When the music isn’t cranked up too loud, it’s an ideal setting for a night out — cozy, stylish, and easy to settle into for a long meal. The food is consistently solid — elevated Italian with thoughtful ingredients and bold, satisfying flavors. It’s the kind of menu that feels well-rounded without being overwhelming. Cocktails are well-executed, and the wine list has some great options to complement the dishes. Service is good, if not particularly memorable. Everyone is polite and efficient, but it lacks the warmth or personality that might make the experience feel more personal. Still, the overall experience — especially when the sound levels are right — makes it one of the more dependable, enjoyable restaurants in the city. A go-to for a special night or when you want to impress out-of-towners with a Philly gem.

Ecellent food but no flexibility

By Jasmin B |

First off, the food we ordered was excellent. We tried the seafood mix (tiny portion which is why it is listed on the menu as a snack), squid ink spaghetti with octopus (very small portion, not a full entree), duck (ok portion), monk fish (special of the day, smaller portion) and hanger steak which was our favorite dish and also represented the biggest portion and best value. The cocktails we ordered were also served in rather small glasses but were tasty. We liked the ambience. What we didn't like was that they weren't willing to substitute sweet potatoes for regular potatoes as my son doesn't like sweet potatoes (they were offering regular potatoes as a side to another dish on the menu). While I find it generally unusual that you are not allowed to make minor changes based on dislikes or food allergies, I am personally willing to deal with it. But when it comes to children, any restaurant should make an exception. It's not like there were a lot of kids inside the restaurant anyways so changing a side for a kid or two shouldn't be too much to ask for in my opinion. Definitely something to consider if you want to go have dinner with a family with little children. Other than that, the quality and flavors of the food did not disappoint, the restaurant is beautiful, and we finished off our family dinner with ice cream and cappuccino...and left the restaurant very satisfied and happy.

Poor reception

By David L |

9/1/2023 FOH expediter was dismissive and condescending for no real reason. I sat with my lady and was too offended to want to frequent this place. I guess she assumed I didn’t work in industry for over 15 years. Really sad. PS. Hosted was nice but vibe as busted.

1st Meal in Philly!

By ATLNative |

This was an amazing experience! The food, the service, the outdoor garden seating were excellent! I have no complaints! The agnolotti veal pasta was the best, and I had some bites of my friends pizza and the gnocchi, all amazing! Drinks were wonderful and honestly for the quality the price was justified on all fronts! Much street parking near by, just have to be strategic when going and plan ahead if you're driving, busy area but highly recommend the outdoor garden seating on a beautiful day! Fully removed from the food and it was lively! Can't wait to come back!

Fabulous!

By JEH_CT |

Went to Wm. Mulherin with my sister and brother in law based on strong recommendations they had and we were not disappointed! Food was great...everything we had was terrific but I would particularly call out the pastas (sweet potato and brown butter ravioli and the special beef ravioli were so good we were still talking about it the next day) and the pizzas were also standouts. We loved having the option of ordering a number of small plates or pizzas to be able to try a wider variety of choices, but still having the option of ordering full entrees if desired. My husband highly enjoyed his lamb steak and we all grooved on the roasted cauliflower. Beyond the food, I would say the wine menu was fun. My husband is pretty knowledgeable about wines but still found an Italian red by the glass of a varietal we had never heard of, so we got a new experience for not a big dollar investment. Our waitress was terrific, both accommodating and friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. All in all, four people who eat out pretty regularly all agreed it was one of the best nights out we had had in a long time, and we are all planning our next visit. Highly recommend

Food & service was excellent. BUT the place was so smokey from the wood burning fireplace it made your eyes burn and your clothes smell. No staff ever mentioned it and was that way all night

Welcome Quality Food

Despite not being a lover of 'plates' type restaurants. This place worked ; loved the duck egg ravioli, octopus and the dorade fish! Loved the environs of Fishtown The only disappointment was there was only one portion of tiramisu left which had to be shared

A+ All Around

Great venue, knowledgeable staff(Mike), and every item we ordered was great. Prices were reasonable for the quality we received. Veal tartare, octopus, hot jawn pizza, brick chicken, and veal cheek. All amazing and i want to go back for more. Drink menu was hip and the beer selection covered most styles. Impressive, very impressive.

I can't give more than 5 stars or I would!! Quality over quantity and worth every penny! Watching the bartenders work was a well choreographed dance. Italian food at its finest.

Excellent food and service.

By 215josephs224 |

The bar and dining room are very nicely designed with comfort in mind. The food , drink, wine selection are top notch. It is a wide varied menu with allot of Italian influence. The pizza and pastas highlight the menus but the larger plates are delicious and creative.

Wm. Mulherin's Sons, is an enigma, a very very good enigma

By neil_weitz |

Wm. Mulherin's Sons, is an enigma, a very very good enigma. Named after the distinctly Irish founded whiskey company that used to reside at this location, this is a restaurant that is most heavily Italian influenced, from its pastas to pizza. The menu features small plates, plates, pastas, pizza and a few entrées I really had to work with the waiter to know what and how much to order for our party of seven. Fortunately, the staff is very knowledgeable and professional, our waiter guided us to the perfect amount of food, without running up the bill yet leaving no one asking for more. The restaurant is nicely decorated, lots of wood, high ceilings, millennial chic art and overall an urban rustic vibe that fits neatly for this under regentrification neighborhood. All that said is nice background and important part of the experience but the real reason people come here, the reason you need to make reservations months in advance is the food. The menu has simple selections that somehow transform into something uniquely delicious that you never experienced before. Take for example Roasted Cauliflower, a small plate, something you a not going to give much of a thought to unless you like Cauliflower, which I don’t particularly love. But this Cauliflower, roasted with oil, almond puree, and raisins, turns out to be something that I cannot even describe as a vegetable, from flavor to texture this was something new, and something very good. I won’t give away everything, but I will recommend you trying a lot of things, you will be pleasantly surprised. Another example is the Spicy Jawn, a Philly named Pizza that is comprised of pepperoni, hot coppa, caciocavallo, sharp provolone, long hots, tomato. Spicy but not too spicy, the perfectly prepared pizza was intensely flavored and the crisp, ever so slightly char on the Perperoni and coppa added a texture that told me I could have eaten the whole thing myself. As far as the pasta goes, like everything else we had several and that was part of the fun. All housemade they varied from the rich Ravioli which by the way is made of sweet potato, brown butter, raisins, and saba. It could have been a desert. The Pappardelle made with lamb shank, dried pepper, and chili was another stand out. Perhaps the biggest surprise and somewhat of another enigma was the grilled Half Brick Chicken. Who goes to an Italian restaurant and comes back saying you have to have their Chicken, but honestly it was one of the best chicken dishes I ever had. Boneless, tender grilled chicken with the right amount of seasoning was the perfect match to share with someone and was an anchor to our meal although next time I might try the 240z Porterhouse which looked amazing or the equally mouthwatering duck breast. Finally, a few important notes. First we all had drinks, and I will say the cocktails were especially creative, and flavorful. It is obvious there is much thought and care given by the bar staff. Secondly, the wait staff was great, very professional from the waiter to the food runners. There was always water in our glasses, silverware changes when needed but never in the way. They were all even well groomed, which says a lot about the attention the management places on the service. Lastly, it was not as expensive as I thought it would or could be. The seven of us ate really well, had wine and cocktails, we shared 4 deserts a couple of coffees, expressos and the check with tip (20%) was under $400. Don’t get me wrong, if we had the specials with black truffles, or the aged Porterhouse we could have quickly ran up the tab. All things considered, I have had meals that were twice the price and only half as good at other Philly restaurants from certain star chefs/ restaurateurs. All of the above makes me say that Wm. Mulherin's Sons, needs to be top of your list to try in Philly

New favorite in Fishtown

Everything was spot on. The cocktails, the draft list, the food, the service. All impeccable! Definitely will be back.

Very Good.

By Paul K |

I went here for a birthday dinner and was very impressed by the decor. It's very cozy inside. We had many different platters. The grilled octopus was outstanding. The spicy jawn pizza was great. Thin crust with tons of flavor. The beet salad was the best ever. We also had the pork ribs which were very good. For mains we had the half brick chicken, tortelloni, ravioli stuffed with short ribs and the corzetti (awesome). All very good. The servings are very small portions so please be aware when you order. The service was just ok. Three of us received our mains and two waited about 10-15 minutes for their platters. Same with the after dinner coffees. That was a little annoying. Better timing would be nice next time. They have a parking lot right next door which was a huge benefit in a neighborhood of slim pickings for spaces.

Great brunch

By Rgprints |

Took my family of six plan baby in stroller for Sunday brunch. Food was fantastic and service was very good. Bar drinks were the only disappointment - Mimosas were tiny and Bloody Mary was just so-so. The good stuff - steak and eggs for the table was excellent, as were the breads, yoghurt and jawn pizza.

FISHTOWN'S FINEST

By DIANE PATTERSON |

We ordered MANY starters & entrees and we enjoyed them all. But, while some of the plates contained generous portions (duck breast & lamb steak), some of them were incredibly skimpy/minuscule (ox tail ravioli) & over-priced. Hubby asked for Dewar's or Canadian Club. They had neither. Although, they did have an extensive selection of other whiskeys. Would we return? Probably not. There are SO many other fine restaurants, in Philly, we've yet to try.

As Advertised.....

By freejoa |

I was fishing around for interesting places to eat while in Philadelphia and hit on Wm. Mulherin's Sons. They had a great web site and were located in a part of the city I would probably not gotten to. Located in a lovely older building that has lots of charm, the rooms are nicely appointed and comfortable. Lots of hard surfaces so it was a bit noisy, but not so much that it became invasive. Hostess team is efficient and I like being asked if they can hang my coat. It really is always about the little things. We were a bit early for our reservation so had a drink at the bar. Busy, but the bar staff is efficient and friendly. I like being acknowledged, I can see they're busy, but the young lady made a point of recognizing we were there and we were on her radar. Drinks came and she mixes a perfect Stoli martini if anyone is interested. Nice table by the window. Waitress is knowledgeable and helpful with what is a really a well thought out menu. Sharing of dishes is encouraged as they offer small, medium and entre plates. We had two small plates to start and shared an entre of the sliced steak which was delicious and perfectly cooked. The food is delicious, beautifully prepared and presented in their own style. If I find myself in Philadelphia again, I would not hesitate to go back.

Amazing experience!!!

By Elliot G |

I went here over the weekend with a friend for my birthday dinner during a trip to Philly and loved every bite! The stuffed dates wrapped in speck were decadent and the homemade pasta in the onion reduction sauce seemed to melt in your mouth. The high point of the meal though was undoubtably the 24oz steak which was cooked to perfection and served with eggplant and cheese on the side; all in all it was utterly decadent. Dessert also included a chocolate lava-esque cake along with a frozen coffee soufflé of sorts. I will absolutely be back here as it was one of the best meals I have ever had.

So Happy We Found You!

By OwlShark |

We were in Philadelphia to celebrate New Year's Eve and decided to try this restaurant for brunch. I am so very happy we did! The interior of the restaurant features a lot of dark wood, which I really liked. We were seated in the bar area at a table lining the windows which offered loads of sunlight. There's another room with a hearth that seemed very cozy. We both ordered the Hangar & Egg and I have to say that this dish was delicious! I really enjoyed everything, from the decor to the attentive service to the food. I'm looking forward to returning for dinner after our fantastic brunch.

great ambience and food

By LMOverby |

Thoroughly enjoyed dinner here with several friends. Located in an interesting section of town, Mulherin's Sons features small plates cooked in two kitchens, so most dishes are shared and came out nicely spaced. Service staff is young and welcoming and energetic ... the pace and the plates keep them hopping. Interesting menu (gourmet pizzas, unusual pastas, nice array of meat and veggie options) and wine list; decent prices.

Beyond my expectations.

Amazing food, excellent atmosphere. You have to make reservations way in advance but it is worth the wait. You wont be disappointed. 👍🏻

Amazing restaurant

By davsuze |

The food in this restaurant is excellent! They suggest ordering plates and sharing and this is a very good idea so you don't miss out on how great all the food is. We started with the Brussel sprouts then mushrooms and pasta. Our main courses were the chicken, halibut and lamb steak. The flavors from all unfolded in your mouth with each bite. They were great. We had olive cake and ice cream for dessert and they did not disappoint. If you are in Philadelphia do not miss this restaurant.

Excellent!

A few Broken Records (drink), Octopus, seafood mixto, pizza for dinner and then brunch the next day. Wonderful food and service! Masters of their craft - bar, kitchen and staff!

Friendly staff, good food! Reserve early b/c they are popular!

By Kimkokomo |

We went for brunch here since we stayed at the hotel and we wanted to eat here. We wanted to have dinner but didn't make reservations in time (the earliest time was 10:15 PM & we are old farts who don't want to eat that late anymore)! Brunch was good - we had the doughnut of the day, a cannoli doughnut, which was dreamy! My truffle burata frittata was pretty good but my husband's salmon toast was great!

Too many rules and excuses can spoil the experience and overshadow the positive.

By sharons103 |

If you're the type of person that likes to order an appetizer and glass of wine while pursuing the menu then this is not the place for you. According to our server the Chef insists that you order your entire meal at once. If you're the type of person that likes to enjoy your meal at the same time as your guests then make sure you all order the same kind of protein as your main course. Three out of four people ordered fish which came together but we had to wait almost 20 more minutes for the red meat entrée to be served. Our server explained to us that red meat is made on a grill in another area of the restaurant. Finally If you're the type of person that likes to maybe make a slight variation to the menu perhaps by adding one of the appetizers to be served with your main course? Then might i suggest you take this spot off your list. I will say the cauliflower was delicious.

Saturday brunch

Limited menu but very good food. We tried the pizza with speck and egg, very tasty and very nicely charred thin crust; and spaghetti Cacio e Pepe , delicious creamy sauce with thick homemade spaghetti. Both excellent, will return for dinner.

Birthday celebration fail

By Alejandra K |

Just leaving the place. Veal tartare was great! Chose this place to celebrate my friend's birthday. I wanted to make it extra special since she just flew from Miami to celebrate her birthday here. From all the other restaurants we chose this one. Told the hostess about the special occasion, unfortunately she didn't communicate it with the server and our checks and packed food was brought to us. Disappointed is not even the right word here. Spoke with management afterwards just to get a pretty lame apology. I would have def picked a better option for the $200 that I paid including the bar tap

Awesome dinner spot in Fishtown

We had a fun dinner with friends here on a Fall couples trip to Philly. Although we passed on the truffles, the cocktails and food were delicious and it was fun to share and experiment.

Delicious dinner and cocktails

By LovesToTravel27_10 |

Went with a girlfriend on a Thursday night to celebrate our birthdays. The place was hopping. We sat in the bar area, which was noisy, but we were able to talk without screaming. Server was friendly and informative, as were the people who brought us our plates. My specialty gin cocktail was awesome, although it bothers me when bar tenders use jiggers to make cocktails. We ordered 3 small plates (Brussel Sprouts, special ravioli and octopus) and the brick chicken because my friend had had it before and she said it was the best chicken she ever had, and she was right. We had plenty of food. My only complaint is that they charged me $5 for tea! That is outrageous! My friend's decaf cappacino was also $5 and it came very late.

What a Vibe!

Thank you Wm. Mulherin's Sons for a great experience as we truly enjoyed ourselves and look forward to our next visit! We were greeted with a smile and welcomed by all. The restaurant is beautifully designed with a fireplace and great tunes to enjoy. We enjoyed chatting with Mike the bartender who made us some delicious Spicy Margaritas. There are indoor and outdoor dining options but we decided to dine on the patio while being well taken care of by Isabel our server. We enjoyed the Burrata, Spicy Jawn Pizza, Tarajin Pasta, Flat Iron Steak and another round of Mike's delicious Margaritas. We're staying at Roost East Market and were excited to hear they're opening a Mulherins at the base of the hotel. We now have must stay and dine spots whenever in Philly. We highly recommend and thank you once again for an unforgettable experience.

Fun in Fishtown

By Marnie M |

This seemingly out of the way spot was packed on a Monday night with a younger crowd enjoying the bar and food. The menu is designed for sharing, so they don't encourage ordering an app each, then salad, etc. This Italian eatery offers wood-fired pizza and uses this cooking method to your advantage on other dishes as well. The brick chicken served sliced on a cutting board was perfect. The chef special pasta with a duck ragu was wonderful. The only thing not exciting is the dessert menu.

Disappointed

By Ken H |

Had dinner here on February 12th with a total party of 8 people. We had a wide mix of plates and virtually all of us were surprised at the saltiness of almost everything. As a matter of fact one of the servers actually said, "that's a Northern Italian thing," seriously? We had 2 pasta dishes, 2 pizzas, 2 small plates, entrees etc. It took almost 3 hours. Some of the party were long finished before others got their orders, unacceptable! Tasty, but oh so salty. I have no clue how this made it to one of Philly's top restaurants. Sorry we won't be back.

Delicious Italian

Beautiful space. Elegantly decorated. Good buzz (almost too much on a Friday night as it was hard to hear one's conversation). Pizza, pasta dish were delicious. Service was attentive. Highly recommended.

The atmosphere was very pleasant , low key and upscale same time. The wide variety of drinks and wonderful food make the place really special. Will be back for sure.

Hit the nail on the head. Totally.

By MaraFromToronto |

From Toronto, where our food scene is solid, this was our last meal in Philly and it was a home run. I loved that their system texted me to confirm, and to remind 30 minutes ahead of our reservation. Cancellations are the bane of any restaurant's existence. The staff all around were spectacular. We were greeted with sweetness, served with excellence, the group work as a team so you won't go without wine or water for long. The wine server is knowledgeable. Not one of the staff were anything but fun, friendly and professional. Now on to the food :) OMG. They are operating out of two kitchens, one for the wood-fired oven, one for the rest. They are up-front that dishes might or might not make it at exactly the same time, but so what? You are about to receive the holy grail of food, so if the pizza is two seconds ahead of the other main? So be it. We LOVED every single thing about this meal. Not one taste here we had tried before, and we go out 4-7 nights a week at home. I am sure there is not one mediocre dish on the menu, but we had the cauliflower snack, the veal tartare on toast, the octopus, followed by the pasta special, and then the brick chicken and the double margarita pizza (double OMG) as mains. Each dish was SPECTACULAR in taste and plating. Fresh and unique and innovative. Kudos to the chef(s) and kudos to the staff. Oh. Did I mention the AMAZING cocktails? Best list I have seen here. And....great beers and wines, with an extensive wine list by the bottle. Tomorrow we head back to Toronto, with great memories from Wm. Mulherin's Sons!

Amazing

The service was great. Very friendly and great recommendations. I had the Crispy Stuffed Pacheri and will be dreaming about them for weeks. The Spicy Jawn pizza was delicious. I was only able to eat 2 pieces and had tons leftover. Definitely shareable.

This place was great. We had the hamachi, a porcini pasta and the spicy pepperoni pizza. Everything was amazing! Great ambiance and fantastic food. I will be recommending this place to everyone visiting Philly.

FIshtown Fantastic

By Brian S |

Dined here midweek on an early summer evening with my wife and our new-to-the-workworld nephew...the kind of young, energetic young man that FIshtown/Kensington/Northern Liberties now are so full of. He, she and I enjoyed ourselves tremendously. From the specialty cocktails, to the small plates, to the pizzas, to the steak, to the desserts...all was delicious. Service was very good as well. Should also mention the nice warm atmosphere that prevails with the dark woods that dominate the space and the large windows of the bar area, etc.

Enjoyable evening.

By rick2619 |

Three of us dined here in a Friday evening. We had to make a reservation the day before to assure seating at our preferred time. We’ve been denied before so plan ahead. The decor and service is very nice. The staff is well versed on the menu and enthusiastic about the various dishes. The cocktail selection is varied and fun. We ordered a variety of dishes, as this is a “shared plate” styled dining establishment. I’m not a fan of the shared plate style as the sizes of plates can be a little small to actually “share”, the mixed seafood for example. And though the listing here and their menu list “gluten free” options, they do not have GF bread or pizza. That’s my personal metric to advertise a GF menu. One other thing, I found it odd that we were asked to make our order entirely so that their “two” kitchens could coordinate, yet the plates came out one at a time, curious. But the quality of the food was great, and the staff enthusiastic about the food. The steak platter was especially tasty. It’s worthy of a visit, especially if you like the shared plate trend. But plan in advance, it is popular.

Excellent!

By bigmotx |

The service and the food here was excellent. Everyone started with a well made cocktail and that set the tone for the evening. We shared a variety of items from the menu. From the starters, stuffed dates, veal tartare, and special tuna dish and all were good and would order again. There was a special pizza that we had ordered. For me, the pizza is about the crust and it did not disappoint. Then onward to the pasta section, we had the Spaghetti all' Amatriciana. This is a pretty basic dish of pasta and red sauce. I would have liked a bit more spice but it was still good. From the plates section, we had the veal cheeks. This was the best dish of the evening. We had dessert too and it was solid. The restaurant is in a renovated whiskey blending facility and it is well done.

Rehearsal dinner extraordinaire!

By cat, no rat |

Words can not describe the FANTASTIC dinner we enjoyed as guests at a wedding rehearsal dinner Friday Aug 27, 2021 The food was spectacular, ambiance is elegant but not stuffy and service could not have been better. Overall, one of the finest meals of my life, and I don't say this lightly having been to many exquisite 5 star restaurants throughout the world.

Ration on Food-a big negative

By Anita D |

I was disappointed. We were 10 women .we optioned for the $ 55 a head family style table servings. They rationed so much I was hungry when I left. While the food was good-I will give them that. They gave 2 servings of small portions for the table throughout. All of us were complaining -can you bring another portion -even on the bread-not enough to go around--and the skimpy beet salad and collard flower dish and pizza to fill us and then our chick and fish--I got a sliver of everything and we all kept asking for more. Please bring another dish if we were 6 people they would have brought the 2 servings for the table but we were 10 people and got the 2 servings for the table . We should of had 4 servings on a table for 10 people. .I honestly felt like I was in jail and was lucky to get a portion of a meal for the day. .ABUSIVE feeling. Literally starved when we left. A total total rip off. perhaps we should of just ordered a regular style of a dinner. We had to ask for olive oil and they hesitated to bring it. and generally on family style table servings tip is to be included and it wasn't. So not worth it for the family style event. they claim to be an Italian restaurant--not for family style --they don't have that part together..

Great dinner

This was a great find by my husband for our anniversary! We had the asparagus salad and seafood mixto to start and both were excellent. Then we had the pizza and veal check gnochii and both were excellent. We really enjoyed it!

Loved loved the intimate vibe and liveliness of the place

By Gastronomica_lady |

I went to eat there solo, and so I sat on a corner table and had half a pizza pie to myself. Their pizza is delicious; just the right amount of crispy and has the right amount of dough without being overwhelmingly chewy. The pie had aged balsamic and I forgot what kind of cheese but I definitely enjoyed it. This place is perfect for a date, a big group, or even for a family "fancy pizza dinner". I would definitely recommend you go try it, preferably with a big group to get to try many things and finish a bottle of good wine or two.

Excellent High Quality-Local Food

By lcattau |

We lived about two blocks away from this restaurant for two years. When it first opened, we heard RAVE reviews. We were not disappointed. This place has a great vibe under the El. The bar area is awesome. The appetizers, pizza, and drinks cannot be beat. We took our two fathers there for Father's Day, and they were AMAZED. All six people raved about it. Definitely deserves to keep being on Philly's Top 50 Restaurants.

Amazing meal

By richardawolff |

We were able to get a 6:45 reservation on a Thursday night and decided that it a good opportunity to sample the food. The food was amazing from start to finish. The lamb steak was my favorite as I am tired of lamb chops, but the steak was amazing and enough to share. The octopus was excellent as was the cauliflower. The pasta was interesting and something I would order again albeit a different selection. Overall a great meal. The wine selection was well priced. Looking forward to going again to try some new selections.

Great new spot in Kensington

By Pete P |

Wm. Mulherin's Sons is a great new restaurant in the up and coming Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. At first glance, the ambiance is wonderful inside. They mix modern with classic in a way that works well. The food was also very good. The lamb steak was the best lamb I have ever had in my life. I definitely recommend it. They perfectly char the outside while keeping the center juicy. Definitely worth checking out!

Nice meal in lovely restaurant

By Katie B |

A friend and I enjoyed a delicious dinner at the lovely Wm Mulherrin. We were seated in a very large covered booth outside under a roof with a thick clear tarp between us and the street. There were white fairy lights, creating a garden party feel. We shared several dishes: the green salad, baked cauliflower, pasta with ragu, and striped bass. All were good; the cauliflower was great. It has an unusual sauce made from puréed raisins and capers. The pasta is a very small shape (malloreddus, about the size and shape of bees) and, although malloreddus is traditionally served with a ragu, the dish felt pretty thin. Service was attentive and friendly, yet we had to ask for fresh plates between courses and were not given serving spoons despite it being recommended that we order everything to share. It was particularly challenging to serve the small pasta with just our dinner forks. Overall a really nice meal in a great atmosphere.

Dinner good food with a dash of pretentious

By Richard G |

Vibe and food excellent. Server a little to much attitude I would go back but left a little disappointed, perhaps because the hype was too high

Great restaurant

By David R |

Restaurant is awesome, food is very good. It's a small plate concept so order a couple of items and share them. Staff is very knowledge and helpful. Will be going back and have recommended this to others in the area

Overrated

Noisy;surly snooty staff ; pretentious overpriced menu ;average pizza at best --avoid - far better options available in Philadelphia

Great dinner, a bit slow to arrive

By Andreea R |

Totally my mistake - I had sky high expectations given Il Pittore was one of my absolute favorites in Philly and I was starving going in. We were four and when finally seated, dishes started arriving one by one in 15-20 minutes intervals - OK, how long can four people pick at a yellowtail crudo? One bite and I was hungrier than before. One of the specials was pasta with Morel mushrooms and truffle - good but not what I had come to expect. There was a soupy taste about the pasta, not creamy and smooth enough to highlight the truffles. Paris' Maison de la Truffe and Vienna's Meinl am Graben do it better. Steak for two was amazing but by the time it arrived I was so past hungry and into annoyed that it felt like too little. Overall we liked it and will definitely go back. May have a snack beforehand :).

Pleasantly Surprised in Fishtown

By 2100Dogtraveler |

Over the years I have not been impressed with the new placers that have opened up in Fishtown and Passyunk. Most of them seem to be selling an experience with fair food to those who do not know for what they are paying. I am pleased to say that Wm Mulherin's Sons is the rare exception. the food is excellent; sophisticated; inventive; & fairly priced for what you get. While it clearly is a "scene" (to be expected in hip Fishtown), it is still welcoming to all with great service and most importantly, exceptional food.

Great Bar, Great Food.

By John D |

The building is a recycled distillery positioned next to the Frankford El. in the Fishtown section of the city. Up and coming. An Italian themed menu featuring brick oven pizza, small plates, and an innovative twist on some common Italian dishes.

Small Plate (Tapas Type) restaurant that' very good

By Richard A |

You have to have reservations or eat very early or late. They took as within 5 minutes of our reservation which was very nice and were seated at a nice size table for 4. Our server Christopher came over and explained the restaurant to us. We were never here before, but my brother n sister n law had been. The drink menu is very large with lots of beer, wine and other types of alcoholic drinks. We wound up having Sister Francis, Don Giorgio, and Diplomatic Relations, all good. We shared everything and had 4 small plates and 2 entree size dishes. Seafood Mixto, Roasted Cauliflower, Veal Tartare, Lamb Pizza, Hanger Steak, and Messinesi Pasta. All were very good. We shared an Olive Oil Cake and a Montenergo Amaro. Our server started off very good and we're not sure why he forgot he was taking care of us and we couldn't get drinks we ordered. Very disappointing. After asking two more time he got them and never did anything to apologize. We still think the retaurant is worth going to.

Fair

By Gil S |

Good environment. Lots of seating including outside. Reservations are encouraged. The chicken was very tasty and tender. The pizza was average. The waiter could have cautioned about the hot chile sauce on the pizza. The restaurant should ask about allergies. I was surprised that children were allowed at the bar with parents. Overall, the restaurant was over rated and somewhat pricey. Just fair.

Very cool and interesting place

By Jiggy Canfield |

Let me start by saying Im a meat and potatoes keep it simple guy. This is a place where the bartender is making drinks like a mad scientist, with some cool off the wall stuff Id probably ever try, but this place is cool. Sat at bar with my wife and son....kept it low level..wife had a side of Broccoli Rabe she loved it, I had the pork ribs...came with about 6 ribs the meat came right off the bone and was so good, and the juice was so good I was dunking whatever I could find it in...a tad spicy which I dont like spicy, but I kept dunking :)))). I also ordered this special with veal in like a tortellini, with wine and lemon sauce and it was excellent...The bartender (with a. cool handlebar mustache) was so nice and helpful, and it was cool to watch him sell and make his cool drinks..again a mad scientist at work :). I wanted a merlot type wine, and he recommended a very good wine, and I had 2 glasses....with all that said I thought it was very cheap for everything $63 before tip....place is very cool as well, outside seating as well

Wonderful

By Rich S |

Had dinner last night and we will be back. We shared 2 small plates for starters, the octopus and the date plates. Both were excellent. I highly recommend both, the dates had spec wrapped around them surround by a very sweet purée. The octopus had been brined and was amazing. For dinner I had the chicken cooked over the wood grill, I never would have ordered chicken in a restaurant but the server explained how it was prepared, brined for 18 hours and cooked over a wood fire, and he was correct in his recommendation, EXCELLENT, full of taste. My wife had the special of the night, Cod fish over asparagus purée, it was so good I hope it becomes a regular item. I love when I go to a dining establishment and the server is able to explain how platters are prepared and explain the intricacies of each meal. Our server, Drew, should not be called a server, he is almost like a partner to the chef and serves as a valuable resource.

Amazing! Chris!

By Kekepania K |

Abiamance was nice. The food was amazing and flavorful. Chris our server provided great service. He suggested 2 wines of selections and allowed us to try them both. It complimented our meals wells. It was our first time there and he made us feel very comfortable. We will definitely be coming back and recommend this place to anyone who is coming this way!

Outstanding

By smeastim |

I very rarely give a restaurant an excellent review, but Wm. Mulherin's Sons deserves it. OK, the area is "up and coming", but don't let that scare you away from a great meal. Located at the corner of Front and Masters streets in Fishtown, the building was a converted whiskey distillery. I took my family there for my wife's birthday and was not disappointed. We started with Roasted cauliflower with avocado paste - who knew cauliflower could be that good. Next plate was pork ribs that were in a red wine and jalapeno reduction. Very nicely prepared with a bit of a kick. We then moved onto stuffed dates. I am not a fan of dates, but found them tasty. Pasta with sweet Italian sausage was incredible. Freshly made pasta was out of this world. We shared the entrée course that consisted of Hangar Steak, Pork chop (their special that night), and Duck breast. You might be thinking that I spent $300 plus on this meal for four, but with several drinks, the meal came to a little over $200. I believe that it was a reasonable price for a great meal. How may times have you gone out to dinner and spent $25 plus for average? This is not average, by far.

Big Beards and the Bourgeoisie

By AdrienneNYC |

On a chilly evening, a warm welcome awaits. The large, beautifully renovated space, a former whiskey distillery, has wood-buring fire places and couches. This might be Roberta's in Bushwick NY if it Robertas were comfortable and filled with the obviously affluent, as opposed to people who dress like artists but can afford non-inexpensive fair. The pizzas from a wood-fired oven are excellent. We shares the lamb./artichoke as a starter. Nice accent of lemon zest. Also shared the figs stuffed with tallegio, wrapped in speck, and the lamb tartare toast. Vegetarian son had the broccili rabe from the small plates section -- very few vegetarian options there. Kudos to the kitchen for winning the battle of bitter. Perhaps erred in ordering two pastas that were specials. Mine was a pea filled ravioli with lamb sweetbreads, which did not pop with fresh pea flavor or benefit from the amount of salt. The non-vegetarian son had the flank steak with shishito peppers and perfectly roasted potatoes. The color was so perfectly golden brown it would make a food stylist jealous.

Hot Place in a Hoppin Part of Town

By John A |

I happen to love Fishtown. It has a great vibe, fantastic places to drink, eat and play and it's all packed into a small, easy to navigate area. Wm. Mulherin's is one of the better restaurants I've eaten at in Fishtown. The menu is small but everything on it (and the specials not on it) was top notch. The interior was cozy and cool-causal. The prices were reasonable and the portions of a decent size.

Sunday Brunch Tasting

By rogersober |

Six of us at the table with six dishes and a pastry assortment make for a grand brunch. We topped that off with great made coffees and wonderfully attentive service. You really cannot beat this upscale Fishtown establishment for creative fate and tasteful appointments. The hanger steak was perfect rare, the polenta was perfect, the scrambled eggs were runny as ordered, the croissants were crunchy beautiful, the browned potatoes crisp and delicious. This was a wonderful meal.

Good Food, Cool Space

By oozzy4208 |

Went for brunch with gf and her mother. I had volcano and eggs, it was okay expecting it to be spicier. GF had the Cacio e Pepe which see seemed to like. GF's mother had the star of the show the hanger and eggs, the steak was tender, perfectly cooked, and well seasoned I would highly recommend the dish. Service was excellent and the space is very well done.

Superb service and meal

By Patrick O |

Wife and I went for dinner and had a great experience. I would recommend getting one item from snacks, small plates, pasta, pizza, and plates. It's a lot of food, especially with the pizza, but worth it. Try and sit in the room with the fireplace and if you can't try and sit at the bar.

Dinner with friends

By Michael D |

Friends from Philadelphia made the reservation on a Monday night. We had an 8:00 reservation and the restaurant was full. We were seated right away. The server and wine director were both very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and asnwering our questions. Will return when back in town

not worth a return

By Mary A |

Mulherins is a beautiful space. The staff were very welcoming, efficient and knowledgeable. This place was jammed on an early Sunday evening as it is the spot in Fishtown to gather at the moment. Lots of small plates and a cool varied menu with different items to try. Our server was full of helpful info and suggestions. That being said, almost everything we tried had a ton of salt. The octopus literally tasted like a strip of bacon. The eggplant parm dip was good, but the sodium was overpowering. The Hamachi was floating in sauce and was overpriced for the few pieces served. I did enjoy the vegetable pizza (with Fiddleheads!) and surprisingly it tasted like there was 0 salt added. The 2 chicken entrees and fishermans stew both were ok, but same seasoning issue. I do not have a problem with tasty dishes and prefer flavorful foods over bland, but this was ridiculous. We almost speculated that the chef had an accident with the salt shaker. Sad to say, we will not return. At this price point, expected better.

Great food & outstanding service

By lm55417 |

This spot was recommended to us by a work colleague who had previously eaten here and enjoyed it. We couldn’t have been more pleased with our decision to go for dinner. The menu is a series of small plates meant for sharing. It turned out to be a tasting menu for us as we enjoyed two of the appetizers – the stuffed dates and their daily special crudo. Both were simple and full of flavor. Next we both ordered our own pasta – we both had the specials, one a pancetta and truffle oil pasta and the other a braised short-rib stuffed ravioli. Absolutely wonderful. We finished by sharing the lamb steak which was beautifully seasoned and prepared – although, truth be told I think we would have preferred it a bit less done. The side of beans it came with was a cold salad and not a warm side as I would have expected – not bad, just different. We both enjoyed several cocktails – a couple of them house specials. I asked my server about having a different glass of wine with my pasta and then the lamb and her recommendations were spot on. There is no doubt the food was outstanding but we were equally, if not more, impressed with the serving staff. They worked so well together so their diners were never served an item that had been siting. It didn’t matter if it was for their table or not – they all worked together so well, it was a little like a beautifully choreographed show. They never seemed rushed or harried and we certainly appreciated the pace at which everything was brought out to us. So, many complements to the entire staff at this wonderful restaurant – we can’t wait to come back next time we are in Philly.

One of my favorites

This is one of the best restaurants! The atmosphere and vibe is so great, the food is always amazing and the staff is fantastic. I love eating at the bar or try to get the seating in front of the fireplace in the colder months. It’s super romantic!

Great for brunch

By Kristie B |

Amazing Bloody Mary and specialty drinks for brunch. Say at the bar and had an awesome conversation with the bartender. He really cared about his job. The food was amazing. One of the best pizzas and cheese plates in the city! No longer on open table but on reserve highly recommend making a reservation.

One of the best places in Philadelphia right now. Amazing food and even greater service. Don't miss out on cocktails in the bar before you sit down. Cozy atmosphere with a fireplace and old wooden panels. Every single thing we ate was just insanely delicious.

Food Glorious Food

By pookala |

Seriously talented kitchen putting out excellent fresh food, well served by a warm, welcoming and competent staff in a beautifully restored treasure of a building. I've been a fan of Chef Painter's food (Il PIttore) and my meal here just confirmed that admiration. Seemingly simple items can be the most difficult to pull off & the kitchen did an amazing job from start to finish. Menu is designed as small plates to share, but there are enough options that you could simply have a side, pizza and dessert for an (affordable) date or have lots of choices and sample something from every category. Our party of three over ordered as usual, when confronted with a menu filled with so many tempting options. Our seven dishes included roasted cauliflower, an asparagus salad, hamachi crudo, a 10 inch thin Margarita pizza, two pastas: one with sweet sausage, the other a delicate pappardelle with asparagus, garlic and parmesan, and for a large plate a half brick chicken served with onion, pine nuts and escarole. For dessert a pine nut pound cake with vanilla gelato, a fantastic coffee pot de creme and a rich and creamy scoop of gianduia ice cream. Coffee - delicious. Homemade sourdough bread - yum. Good wine list, interesting cocktails... in short - a food lover's paradise. (FYI - there are a few snakes in paradise, room gets loud (please install some acoustical panels) and parking may be difficult for those who insist on driving, and lastly, I have to say I am not a huge fan of the large psuedo-Helmut Newton photographs in the main dining area.)

Hip atmosphere, great service and delicious food.

By Morris |

From center city Philadelphia to fish town is a bit of a Uber ride but the trip is worth it. Everything about Wm. Mulherin's shouts quality. The building façade, the interior design and furnishings create a warm comfortable and cool vibe. We ordered off the brunch menu which is a limited but still everything we had was delicious. There is a wood fired oven so the pizza was perfect and the pasta dishes we had were spot on. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone.

Messaged me to leave by 7:30pm

By jknows |

Food was very good. However, I was surprised to receive two text messages reminding me that I had to leave by 7:30 pm because someone else was using the table at that time. While eating I received another text with the same reminder. I had to tell my guests to make sure they ate quickly or we would be thrown out at 7:30pm. Never ever has this happened to me in a restaurant. Strange place. I will not return.

Great place if you are NOT Vegan!

By Joey M |

First time back since I switched to being a Vegan back in April. Chef sounds like a primadonna. A typical trick as a Vegan you learn is to take items from the normal menu and make a meal, particularly if they have no vegan options. My friends wanted to go and since they regularly bend for me I said I will find something for Brunch. The waitress did not know my friends who are friends with the owner so when I asked her for a very simple raw plate of items they use in other menu items she advised the chef would not do it. I ended up with toast and jam initially as my order. The owner saw my friends and came over and we did not play that card and I just accepted the toast and jam as my only option. The owner left and the bartender came back and said she checked with the chef and he would serve me just fruit and not the yogurt. So I had 3 small pieces of toast and some jam, 4 raspberries, 4 blueberries and about a dozen blueberries. I then ordered a 2nd order of toast and they delivered without order a dozen or so diced up beet pieces. All very tasty though. Place was all but empty so there was no pressure on the kitchen so didn't understand the chef's position. My friends brunch looked great and they both enjoyed their meals. They love the place so it is the only reason I gave it a 3. Wont be back and would suggest you don't go if you are vegan.

Great overall experience!

By andreasjohnston1978 |

I was taken to Wm. Muherin's Sons on the back of a recommendation of a client and it was great. The sommelier was very knowledgeable which probably led to the fair large wine bill ;-) and the food was brilliant. Little tip, take the waiting staff's advice on recommendations and definitely try the stone baked pizza! Thanks for a great experience.

Good food

The food was superb! Family style was fun, but potions are small to encourage sharing if you have a large party (7). Our server was OK, but forgot some of our drinks.

Spectacular Service and Food !

By tanookitwirls |

Finally made my way here after scrounging OpenTable for available times, I snatched the first one I could see which wasn't available for 3 weeks, popular spot! Overall had a great dinner. Service was spectacular, our server has such a great way with people, is friendly but not fake, very easy going and described the items of the day to great detail and professionalism. I also had a question about two dishes she answered wonderfully, great great service no complaints. Cocktails are a bit pricey, closer to $12-14 end range, but they're pretty good. The food was very good, one dish was most definitely subpar to the others though. We started off with Octopus served in a pistachio pesto and cannellini beans. The octopus was very good, I loved the flavor of the pesto and cannelini beans but this was way over seasoned, it was insanely salty to a poitn where I felt like I exceeded my maximum daily sodium limit with this one dish alone. It was so so so so salty, i can't even begin to explain how salty it was.. so unfortunate because the other flavors were so so good! For our entrees we shared the Pumpkin, fall sqaush mountain gorgonzola truffle burrata pizza and the Porcini cavatelli pasta. Both of these were fabulous, but the pasta won the show. The texture of the pasta was perfection, the seasoning, the mushrooms, the cheese, no complaints, perfection. The pizza dough was so good! The squash and the truffled burrata paired amazingly. Overall, despite the octopus, we'll be back. It's a great restaurant and I'd love to try some other dishes, but probably not the octopus next time around

The Place to Be!

By Joey M |

Went here after a Flyers game. Got there around 9.30 or so. Friend knew the bartender so we were able to hold three seats at the bar for us otherwise we would have had to wait. We left at 11 and people were still coming in "with reservations". Place was mobbed. Food was very good, not over the top but very good. The atmosphere was electric. The structure and decor of the place was beautiful. They spent a ton of money on this place and while they may want to say it is Fishtown it is in Kensington. Park close because it is not a great neighborhood BUT right now it is "The Place to Be".

Can’t wait to return!

By Springtraveler06 |

After several attempts to secure a reservation, we were thrilled to snag a table (in the bar area). The staff was terrific, the choices inventive, portions as anticipated (small), prices high but worth every cent. Do try the delicious pasta options. If possible, seek a table I. He slightly less noisy dining area.

Good & Intimate brunch spot

We started with deviled eggs which were ok. The egg benedict was unique and delicious. The steak and eggs and breakfast were delicious as well. We enjoyed the pasta as well. The service was attentive.

Elegant dining

By karesp52 |

We chose this restaurant to celebrate our son moving into his first place in Fish Town. We went early on a Tuesday night. No problem, getting in without reservations. The service and ambience were excellent. The strange thing is that the waitress encouraged everyone to share and they serve the dishes one by one to foster this notion. However, the servings are so small that the meals do not lend to this practice. Thank goodness, we ordered the brick oven pizza, which was big enough to share and it was delicious or we may have gone home hungry. They do serve oven baked bread first. We also ordered the mushroom gnocchi and sea bass, which were very good. The veal cheek came with three small pieces of meat, and two tiny side of peas and gnocchi. This meal was exceptional, however, with only three tiny pieces of meat and equally small sides, you would think, it would come with four pieces of meat, so it can really be shared equally. We had a dessert of apple streusel, which was very tasty. It would be hard to say if we would ever go back to this restaurant. Yes, the meal was exceptional for the most part, but the portions are so small and it is so expensive, it is probably not going to happen.

Terrific in Every Way

By BrynMawrBK |

All I can say is "Wow". Every aspect of our evening here was great. It's a beautiful historic building on a corner under the el in Fishtown with tall windows that light up the bar area beautifully. The vibe is fresh and upbeat, with attractive, enthusiastic young servers who made us feel very welcome. We started with cocktails, some of the best in town, made by the most personable bartenders we've encountered. They were happy to explain the drinks and make suggestions, and we were happy to take them. Our table was in the spacious bar area (there are several different high-ceilinged rooms), where we enjoyed the excellent porcini cavatelli -- just large enough to share -- followed by an enormous succulent sliced rib eye steak for two, perfectly prepared. It was too much to finish so we took a lot of it home. Bottom line: we can't wait to go back to try the pizza, more pastas, and more of the excellent cocktails!

Absolutely everything was delicious!!

By Beth B |

It's not often that everything you order is fabulous, but this was the case at Wm Mulherin's Sons on Friday night. The tomato salad was superb as was the mushroom pizza, rabbit stuffed pasta, dusk stuffed pasta, smoked trout AND fig dessert. My husband and I have not had a meal where EVERY item was perfection in many years. Hats off!! We'll be back.

Great food with enthusiastic friendly service!

By Morris |

We dined at Wm. Mulherin's a couple weeks ago and decided to go again to celebrate mothers day. This time we stayed in the hotel with the same name directly above the restaurant, it is amazing too and I highly recommend it as well. We wanted a some items from the restaurant because we had some visitors stop by our room and Michael the wine guy took care of me. He even phoned ahead to the restaurant we were dining at that evening and arranged for a special course for us on him. He was not there for me to thank the next day but it was a very kind much appreciated jesture. The brunch for mothers day was perfect. The servers knowledge and enthusiam made the experience even more enoyable. The drinks selection from wine, beer to liqour is outstanding. I highly recommend this restaurant and the hotel to everyone!

Birthday Dinner

By Karen R |

Quite the popular place-we tried for birthday dinner here a year ago but couldn’t get a reservation so, we started well in advance this year to secure a spot. The building itself was a former whiskey distribution site so it has been lovingly restored keeping the original brick walls and high ceilings. The service was very good. Helpers are plentiful so, even when it got super busy, someone was on hand to keep the water glasses filled or the wine flowing. It is recommended that the table order with the idea that all dishes will be shared. And because there are two separate kitchens, dishes are served whenever they are ready. So it was explained that the meal will be staggered. We ordered several appetizers, a pizza (a must) a pasta, and two entrees. It was a lot of food! The fig appetizer was light, sweet and smothered in mascarpone cheese. The octopus appetizer (pictured) was ok- probably the least favorite of our choices for me. We got the squash and burrata pizza which was just divine! I ordered the short rib pasta and my other family members ordered the hanger steak and the lamb. All three were great but my favorite was the hanger steak. It was a birthday so the staff did bring us dessert with candles. We shared the rice pudding brûlée and the chocolate “Il bacio” which was also just heavenly. Parking is available in the rear of the building-a definite plus. Make a reservation! It gets noisy due to the open nature of the warehouse architecture and the sheer busyness of the establishment on a Saturday or Sunday evening.

Delicious brunch

By EmmeMED |

Great brunch in a rustic, industrial chic environment. The yogurt is to die for (white chocolate and granola). Other in my party tried the eggs on the forest floor ( mushrooms with egg), beets, seafood ceviche and pizza. Really good but it was quite expensive.

Great find in Philadelphia

By Caroleg49 |

Really good food in a fun, warm environment. The menu is creative, and the portions are a good size for sharing so that you can order a number of different things (which you will want to do). Excellent service.

Excellent birthday celebration

By Rosetwig |

Came here the day after Christmas for my birthday, aware of the reviews that warned of less than stellar service. I’m happy to say that everything was splendid, starting with the host who made sure I got the exact table that I wanted... and while we were waiting for the table to be set we met Scott the bar tender who helped us decide exactly what we wanted to drink and made them perfectly and personably. He’s the real deal. Our meals did not disappoint.. four of us had a pizza starter, (fabulous) 3 pastas (also wonderful if a bit over salted for some ) and 4 mains. The star of the meal was the porterhouse, but the chicken was also perfectly prepared and delicious, as were the scallops. The only glitch at all in the service was the late arrival of the scallops, but we were sharing so it wasn’t really a big deal to us. Every server and runner was gracious and accommodating... I don’t know what all the negative comments were referring to, we certainly saw nothing like that. We split 2 deserts .. the polenta plum cake left the men drooling and the women both loved the baccio cake. And, their desert drink, the Bomba was perfect. It was not an inexpensive evening... with all those drinks and many courses it was close to $100 per person, all in, but you can have a great meal for a fraction of the cost..we’ll go back to have pizza and drinks at the bar.

A Treat For Your Tastebuds

By Brooke |

Dinner was a treat in this beautifully restored space. Our server was exceptionally attentive, and the food was wonderful. Our group ordered an assortment of small plates from the menu & shared it all - broccoli rabe, pork ribs, veal tartare, speck pizza, leslie chow, tagliatelle, rabbit - all delicious. My only (slight) disappointment was with the drinks - hot and cold. I thought our before dinner cocktails at the bar were a little pricey - $11, $12, $14, $12 - especially considering that the bartender was less than generous with his shot pour. And then after dinner I ordered a cappuccino for $6, which was served in a rather small cup - either the price needed to be smaller or the cup needed to be larger! Fortunately, though, the food trumped the drinks so I would still highly recommend this place for an interesting food adventure with friends or family.

Keeps getting better

By Karen M |

If we lived closer I would be here at least once a week. Started with the cheese board which was excellent and the seafood mixto, it was fabulous. Then we each had the pasta special of the evening. The beef stuffed pasta was the best I have ever had and I have been to Italy many times. Also tried the pasta with peas and prosciutto which was excellent as well. Both tried the desserts and they too were so very very good. Service as usual was wonderful. I cannot wait to go back.

Hipster, fine dining experience

By Bdh26 |

I know, I tried quite hard to get the right mood in the title. We are 4 foodies with a somewhat unhip life style. The atmosphere is old wood elegant, almost takes you back 40 years to a fine club. The staff and their service is what lends the establishment the hipster flare. Yes, as noted by others, the noise can get a little loud. Like most small corner family restaurants it seems friends just make noise. The service is polished, friendly, attentive and very knowledgable. Now to the reason to go and why we will go back - soon. The food was stupendous! Three kitchens serve out either small plates and appetizers, pizza and pasta or large plates and grilled meats. Go as a group, order several plates and share. The appetizers and pastas are small plates, no more than two or three bites each for our table of four, but just enough to sample the perfect and fresh pasta and sauces. For the pizza they are 12 inches in size, bigger that an individual but not too small to share. I do not ascribe to the idea that all grilled meat is the same. I do not think that many Philly spots will plate as perfect a lamb or steak. The table tried the mixed drinks, the tap and bottle beer and a couple different red wines by the glass. Yes, a little pricey, but good to very good quality. For the record, there is a parking lot beside the building that is free to the restaurant patrons.

Great Fishtown spot !

By DAD1995 |

Brunch with family was great. Foodies loved it. Service was good but not great - Example: Had to ask for toast that accompanied a dish. Lots of pleasant folks doing their jobs - Tableware, Food delivery but server could have done more. All that said A great spot. Hope the Servers attention to detail improves.

Unbelievable

Great food and space in my old neighborhood

I was born and raised in Fishtown MANY years ago. Very eager to return and try Wm. Muherin's Sons (opened March 2016) after reading so many good things about it in the paper. We were not disappointed. First, the space is fantastic. Interior woodwork is beautiful; fireplace adds a nice touch. Wonderful ambiance. (Ambiance is not a word I've ever used in conjunction with Fishtown in all of my years living there). Service was friendly, attentive and very knowledgeable. Food was outstanding--apps one beet salad and another roasted cauliflower (yes cauliflower) were delicious. The three mains we had were all excellent -- one was pumpkin ravioli, another was hanger steak, and the third was their famous brick oven chicken. Beer and wine were also very good. Prices very fair. Highly recommend.

Fabulous Dinner

Wonderful service, excellent food and luxurious ambience. Our server was terrific, the Spicy Jawn pizza is a game changer. We will be back again and again. The Don Giorgio is the best summer cocktail ever, so fresh.

Excellent Food, mixed management

This bistro features nouveau Italian in small plates. Not cheap, but reasonable to the what you get. Each dish was great. The jaws pizza was the best brick oven pie I've ever had, the truffle butter pasta special was fabulous, the octopus app was the meatiest tastiest ever. Now for the mixed service/management: If they decide their kitchen is too busy, they won't seat you even without 1/3 of their tables empty, so crowds end up standing drink in hand unable to sit in an empty chair...absurd, ABSURD...the manager should be let go for this ridiculous policy. Table on a slanted sidewalk 6 inches from a parked car(glasses sliding off table): absurd. Two slices of bread: absurd. Other iffy things: drinks are one-dimensional, wrong cc returned to me, very slow service (I should say the waiter himself was great). Will return for the food, but I'm wary. Get it together management and think about the customer experience.

Great new spot in an up and coming area !!

Great pizza and pasta with many small plates. The service is superb and the Resturant has a great bar. 5 *

Great place to chat by the fire

Very nice and warm surroundings. Great to get the chairs by the fireplace. Very good pizzas and tapas. Excellent drinks. Somewhat expensive, but not too bad for the whole experience.

Great Find in Fishtown!

Visited this classic Philadelphia restaurant 6pm/Saturday and would not have gotten a table w/o a reservation. Great mix of small plates, pizza, pasta and grilled entrees. We had the Half Brick Chicken, Duck Breast, Hanger Steak, and Hallibut. Try the broccoli rabe! All were of high quality and perfectly prepared. Service is outstanding. Great wine list. Call ahead and get precise directions to their free lot- parking is very tough in this area.

Poor Disdainful Service

The servers all seemed to have an attitude that the customer was wrong. Food was good but I would not recommend this place. I will not return. We arrived 30 minutes early. Hostess seemed upset that we could arrive 30 minutes before our reservation. She told us to go to the bar for a drink. We went to the bar and all the seats were taken so we stood and tried to order a drink. The bartender said they don’t serve people “standing” at the bar. She told us to go over to a white counter on the side and a server would come and take our order. 15 minutes later, yes, a server did come to take our order. When we finally got to our table, as we were deciding what to order for our meals we asked the waiter to just put in a seafood appetizer right away. He said he couldn’t do that. That the restaurant requires us to order all the food at once. And then he walked away. WTF? When he finally did come back to take our order, my husband purposely didn’t order the seafood appetizer because he was so pissed at the way he had been treated. Restaurants are supposed to serve me - not order me to fit their requirements. I do not recommend this restaurant.

Top Notch

It is expensive, and it is not byob as many excellent restaurants in Philly are. Nevertheless, the food and service here are worth a high price. I was very impressed with the waiter's professionalism --like a waiter in Paris, but a friendly American as well. The martini was excellent. I did not follow their recommendation of the "classic" formula 2:1 gin-vermouth, a formula so classic as to be before my lifetime. No, I had what I asked for, and it was perfect. The octopus-scallop et plus hors d'oeuvre was splendid, and so was the cauliflower item, really splendid. Then we shared the porterhouse for two, which is the most expensive thing on the menu, so I'm not complaining so much as alerting you that this is an expensive place. The steak was perhaps not as superb as I expected to be on the evidence of the wonderful hors d'oeuvres. Their own butter pecan ice-cream was dessert, which a bit too much food for me, but lovely.

High quality, small portions

This is a beautiful restaurant in a converted Fishtown whiskey distillery, and it's hopping with business. As a single, I always eat at the bar, and for this one, they manage a waiting list as opposed to having people wait in the bar area, which is sensible, as the space is relatively narrow. The wait was not long. I had stuffed dates and a veal stuffed pasta, which were both terrific, but the stuffed pasta was an especially small portion and I should have ordered another. Overall, I rated this a four and not a five only because of the smallish portions and the price-value equation, but keeping that in mind, it's certainly a high-quality foodie experience.
