Great food

By David M |

We drove all day from Las Vegas and happened upon Wood Ranch BBQ Grill. We were greeted as we walked in and seated in the bar so we could watch game two of the World Series. I ordered the half grilled chicken, grill corn and mashed potatoes. The chicken was cooked and seasoned perfectly (the sides were great as well). My better half ordered the the pulled pork sandwich and mashed potatoes. She said the sandwich was great as well. Our server was very attentive and made our visit a good one (sorry forgot his name).

It's All About the Meat Here

By OakvilleGal |

Next to hotel we were staying at. Busy on Friday night but seated at a booth right away. Friendly ambiance and nice inside. Several very large groups seated in another area, they seemed happy. Appetizer of spinach/artichoke dip and salsa was good not great. The salsa was flavourful. The dip was greasy. Service was excellent. I had the baby back ribs. Really tasty and meaty - not much fat at all and the sauce was great. The peanut coleslaw did not impress me at all relative to some of the great reviews I had read of it. Missing some zing. The asparagus was woody in pieces and really overdone. My daughter enjoyed the tri tip (I tried it and found it so tender). Her mac and cheese was bland but she enjoyed her caesar salad. The garlic butter buns were not very good - kinda stale tasting and greasy. Generous portions of everything. $70 all in, including a lemonade and a draft beer. Was enjoyable but didn't live up to my expectations - not because of the meat, but due to the sides. I guess I expected more all round due to the many awards they have won as shown on their website. A solid steakhouse but been to better.

Wished it was better

By Denise A |

There was a group of 12 us and the service was really slow. Food all came out at once and hot so I don't think it was the kitchen but just a slow server. Surprised the tip was automatically added in but really was glad it wasn't because it wasn't worthy of an 18% tip. BBQ was just ok but I think I was expecting better.

The Absolute BEST BBQ - EVER!!!

By Mike B |

For those of you who have read my previous reviews, you know I shoot straight from the hip: no nonsense – just the facts. I grew up in Georgia and have always enjoyed barbeque. As a kid my family in the country would roast a whole hog – now that’s good eats! Since Wood Ranch BBQ was right next to the Double Tree Hotel, We decided to give it a try. The interior is your usual BBQ ambience – maybe a bit more upscale perhaps. The service was good and in fact, I noticed many of the young people who were servers in CA were terrifically friendly and upbeat! I ordered the pulled pork, brisket and St. Louis ribs. All three had a lovely, Smokey taste with a slight hint of sweetness….BUT the star of the evening was their tenderness. I have NEVER, EVER had BBQ as tender as the meat was here. It was amazing! Smokey Bones, Famous Dave’s, Chubby’s and all the rest need to come to this altar and see how BBQ is really done! I’m going to inquire if they ship – it will be worth EVERY penny!

Great service

By Totoo Ito |

This is about their take out service. As soon as our order taken, we were told it would be ready in 15 mins....and it was! Order was on time, neatly packed with extra sauce and a smile! Food was just ok. The chicken was a bit too salty. The buckeye burger was excellent though.

Right next to a Double Tree hotel.

By NumberSix |

This place is right next door to the hotel I stayed at. If you know the Wood Ranch restaurant chain--you will certainly know what to expect here. I went with my friend who rides a scooter, and they were really helpful to make sure we got a table where she could park the scooter. All in All a great restaurant.

Good BBQ Restaurant

By Mohsman |

This was a very good barbecue restaurant experience from start to finish. The hostess was prompt and friendly, and our server was exceptionally friendly efficient and attentive. We really liked her, and I regret not learning her name to mention it here. I had their pulled pork sandwich which was very good. I ordered their baked potato, which was also very good. My wife liked her spare ribs and onion strings. As a beer drinker, I really enjoyed their wide array of options on draft, and bottles, and in cans. It is certainly worth coming to for lunch or dinner.

Delicious food, nice atmosphere and great service.

By Kim F |

Everyone says go to Phil's for BBQ but the Wood Ranch BBQ and Grill was delicious. We walked in and were directly seated. The restaurant was opened up to the outside and overlooks the hillside. Service was prompt and very friendly. Good cocktail menu. They offer tasters of beer on tap. I ordered the tri tip with smashed sweet potatoes and peanut coleslaw. The tri tip comes whole like a steak and it is very tender. The sweet potatoes were like candy. We could easily hear each other to discuss business. Two of us had drinks and entree for $60. Seemed very reasonable. I highly recommend heading here for BBQ if you want low stress but good food!

Not Just for Knit Night!

By yuniced |

I got acquainted with this place because my knitting group likes having our "Knit Night" here and it's not for the atmosphere, cause it's dark in there. It's because of the crack rolls which the bread they serve with the meals. It's so delicious and addicting! They are so packed with cheese and butter. Staff are so sweet to provide us with extra wet naps so we don't soil our projects too much. They are also happy to make out separate bills too for the meals. The barbeque meat dishes are just wonderful! I do recommend the trip tip sandwiches and salads.

Best meal in America

By jeffnkatieC |

We visited after a long day driving from Anaheim and visiting Legoland with our 2 children and were blown away. The service was impeccable, the restaurant was beautiful and THE FOOD..... AMAZING!!!! I'll eat pretty much anything so I'm probably not the best judge but our 2 kids (And my wife) can be picky with what they eat and they were looking for more, with everyone deciding it was the best meal we've had in 2 trips to the US. Great job guys!!!

Trendy BBQ Place

By Skip M |

I went here for a business lunch. I had not been here before, and upon entry noted that it was different than most barbeque places. A modern, even trendy atmosphere. Service was quick and friendly even with a decent crowd at the noon hour. I ordered a lunch size plate of brisket sliders and fries. It came with a small side of BBQ sauce rather than on the slider -- that let me adjust the amount I might want on the sandwich. Taste was phenomenal. The portion was perfect - 2 sliders and the fries. I finished satisfied, but not so full I wanted a nap. The menu looked terrific. I will be taking my family back there for a dinner and will try something else.

Good food, excellent service

By Justin |

Ate dinner here with a large group as part of a business trip. The staff were excellent in dealing with such a large group. They were able to get our drinks in a timely fashion and worked well together. The ribs I got were good. They were more of your typical restaurant fare though versus what you might get from a specialized bbq place. Liken them more to outback.

expensive BBQ misnomer

By michael w |

we had a chicken which was dry and of little tastealthough the staff were friendly and helpful the chicken skin was chewy rather than crispy over priced at $100 for the two of us with a bottle of wine

Business dinner with Financial Advisor and Friends

By jerrychen777 |

The hostesses were charming and friendly. Our waitress could not be outdone as she offers their house cocktails and descriptions of their their wonderful menu. I had the simple grilled shrimp over rice and their very original coleslaw. My dinner was close to perfect and service was outstanding !! Great job Wood Ranch team !!

Very good food

By BubblerGuy |

Had the tri-tip and wasn't disappointed. Very good dinner. Service was very good as well. Nice variety of draft beer available.

Over Priced and Average Taste

By Certainly1515 |

No wait for seating. Staff very friendly. The food was not good portion sizes for the prices. The brisket was bland, a few pieces dry, a few pieces moist. The Mac-n-Cheese boxed taste and under cooked, baked beans great flavor and well cooked. The Jim Bean Grilled Salmon was grilled well and not dry but indeed very small portion. The seasoned grilled vegetables were nicely grilled but far too much pepper and very small portion. Overall I would probably not recommend or go back because it’s just average food and pricey, while there are other restaurants in the town that offer bigger portions, with the same quality of food or better but at a lesser cost there’s no need to stop at this restaurant over the others.

First Attempt, Comfort Food, Not 5 Stars

By Kevin H |

Your location Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill Hazard Center, 7510 Hazard Center Dr #215, San Diego, CA 92108, USA Barbecue Kevin Hensley 6693 points   7 minutes ago As usual, patrons handing out too many non substantive 5 star ratings. I read 10 or so and am not convinced this rates as reviewed? Had dinner here, first visit on approximately 7 August, 2019. I usually focus on the food quality/portion size to price, service and aesthetics of the restaurant, and will do so here. My son and I started with their version of nachos and one of their (3) whiskey samplers. I'm not a regular to whiskey and like a sommelier, my ability to appreciate the subtitles is weak. Fortunately, our waiter was the in-house expert. The main course consisted of the rib eye medium rare with brussel sprouts. For dessert, their (deep dish) peach cobbler. For $30+ dollars the Rib Eye was of medium portion size, cooked just slightly more than a true medium rare, so a miss. The taste was true with a nice grilled meaty and fatty taste on the palate, unfortunately, there was just too much medium consistency in the gristle quantity. The brussel sprouts were decent, plain tasting and did not stand-alone as a premium side as they very much advertise. Back to the chips and salsa. Quantity was mediocre for chips, salsa, and guacamole. Taste and textures were as well, so again, I'm wondering why so many people are willing to hand out 5 Stars so easily? Perhaps they're just being nice folks? The deep dish was not so deep and was pleasant enough. Not overly sweet but the peach/cinnamon flavors I was hoping for never developed. As well the portion side "Mom" was dishing out was under whelming. The ambiance/aesthetics all things considered were and are what probably influences the reviews here, that and the alcohol. The service was friendly and attentive, but in fairness, it was not busy. I'm hoping to post pictures as they can often speak for themselves with relevance to aesthetics. Overall then, the rating for this comfortable, and decent offering steak and potatoes type of higher end eatery earns a 4.0-4.3 star rating. Hoping this helps clarify!

Good for lunch

By A_H |

Visited for lunch. Californian bbq food is great, however service is ok at best. If you go try the tritip

Good food

By bill g |

Food was good with an appetizer that was their own take OutBack's 'Bloomin' Petals.' Service was a bit slow given the lack of customers in the restaurant at 9 pm.

The BEST BBQ I’ve ever had!!!

By Tom m |

On Sun 8/18 we dined at Wood Ranch Bbq & Grill. The server Anthony was Awesome! Gave us 1st time visiting suggestions & was efficient & friendly! The wings were the best. We enjoyed our meal so much we went back for lunch today Mon 8/19. The server Kevin was friendly, efficient & attentive!!! Keep up the good work!!! We hope someday there will be a WOOD RANCH in the Palm Springs/Palm Desert area!!! We’ll be back on our next San Diego visit!!

A great place.

By jmbakulich |

We ate at Wood Ranch two nights in a row and thoroughly enjoyed it. We sat at the bar and were served our favorite Zinfandel and excellent steaks. Go there - you won't be disappointed.

Good BBQ in a Family Friendly Atmosphere

By David R |

The BBQ is spicy, the service is prompt, and the atmosphere is family friendly at Wood Ranch. Some very tasty dessert offerings, too. We'll be back!

Tri Tip and Wood Fire Shrimp were great

By Cindy V |

While staying at the Double Tree, my family and I wanted barbeque and didn't want to travel all the way to the famous one in Seaport Village, so we opted for next door instead. The barbeque was ok, but the tri tip was better and so was the wood-fired shrimp and cole-slaw. They have a wide selection of beers, so it all went well together. I didn't think the baked potato was that great, and the macaroni and cheese is extremely cheesy if that appeals to you - I didn't like it that much.

Great service, average food

By emgemdodge |

My family of four visited Wood Ranch in December 2021 for dinner. My husband's steak was perfectly cooked, but my baby back ribs were atrocious--tough and chewy, didn't fall off the bone. I didn't eat them. Thankfully, the manager removed the charge from the bill. The grilled corn on the cob I had on the side tasted as if it were cooked on a gas grill instead of a wood grill--I don't know if this is the case, but that's how it tasted. The highlight of the night was the butter cake for dessert. It was VERY good--one of the best desserts I've ever had in a restaurant.

Tasty and reaonable

By Momel1 |

Wood Ranch is a two minute walk form the Double Tree. The burgers are tasty and the garlic rolls are very good. Service is cheery, but not always fast.

Great spot!

By luvs2btraveling |

We had dinner here after a long day of travel From the east coast. The staff was very attentive and friendly, the atmosphere was pretty cool and the food was great. Someone in our party had ribs that were fall off the bone, someone had BBQ chicken which was juicy and not dry and someone had a platter with pulled Pork and Brisket served with a selection of bbq sauces. Everyone was very happy with their meal! If you are in the area check them out for sure!

Consumer Beware!

By acferber |

Both my husband and I have been going to the Wood Ranch restaurant in Anaheim for years, so when this one opened in San Diego we were so excited. Of course we ordered our favorites (chicken barbecued salad and barbecued tri-tip sandwich). OMG! Both dishes were nothing what we were used to. The chicken was tasteless and the tri-tip was full of fat and grit. Neither of us ate our food. In fact we returned our meals, obtained credit and went to the Cheesecake Factory. We have not returned since. Recommend consumers with discriminating tastes think twice about patronizing this restaurant.

Great food, good service!!!

By Eric_F |

I’ve used this restaurant on a number of occasions for business dinners. I’ve brought groups in size from 4 - 16 here and all have been handled with ease. If you’re going to have more than 6, I would suggest reservations. While we’ve always been impressed with the food, I’ll say that while the service is good, it isn’t overwhelming awesome. Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t bad service, in my opinion it just doesn’t rise to the level of everything else about this restaurant. From beef, to pork, to seafood, they do it all really well. The sides are also stand out. I can only offer a guess on the quality of the desserts - we’ve always been too full to order any. I will continue to keep this spot at the top of my list for business dinners - they have a great atmosphere for team bonding, from a drink at the bar before being seated, to still being able to carry on conversations across the table, they get a lot of things right!!!

Dynamite Baby Back Ribs

By KelricAlain |

I ordered curbside-to-go from the Wood Ranch in Hazard Center on a Friday night. The baby back ribs were meaty and cooked perfectly. The BBQ sauce was tangy and portioned just right. I had the corn on the cob and the fries as sides. They even included 3 dinner rolls with my meal. I live only 5 minutes from the restaurant, so everything was still warm when I got home. Terrific! Will definitely order again.

take out/watch out

By bill g |

I have been there several times and also used there take out on line. Today I ordered a whole chicken. when I arrived they brought my order right out. it looked a little small ( could not see due to steam) and I reminded them. about the whole chicken. they assured me that was what I was getting. Got home and it is Half a chicken. They said come back and they would give me the other half I said credit my card. don't trust the take out.

Typical chain type place

By FREDLOW1 |

Food and service not bad but it did not wow us either. Beef ribs were OK prices comparable to other places like this. Big pet peeve of mine is like many other places this spot overcooks their meat. Had the thick cut Tri-Tip and was asked of medium would be acceptable so I was like of course. But sadly when I got my food meat was over but none the less still good. Only reason I cam here was because it is adjacent to my hotel.

Unimpressive Food and Service

By ddmullis |

I had to flag down a bartender after being seated for more than five minutes. What was interesting was the bar was not busy at all For food, I got the BBQ chicken breast with BAKED potato and grilled corn on the cob. The chicken was tasty however the Baked Potato was served so cold it would not melt the butter I put in it. The grilled corn had roasted corn silks left where it had not been properly cleaned Overall the service was marginal at best This was all had for the low price of $25.00

New Eatery

By Ray B |

Open since last spring, the appearance is good, inside and out. I was impressed that there was a separate entrance, counter, and register for the take out orders. We went there just ahead of the dinner rush and were seated immediately. The wait staff has gotten their jobs learned and were professional and polite. The restaurant, while specializing in BBQ, also has burgers, steaks, seafood, salads, and desserts. I had a burger. It and the entrees of the other four in the party were all excellent. The restaurant is just outside the back door of the Doubletree Hotel where we were staying. We will return on future visits.

Love the atmosphere and the brisket was great!

By Jaime J |

We had wings, which my son loved. The brisket was delicious. My husband had fish and enjoyed it very much. My daughter had the brisket sandwich. I just was not loving the corn on the cob.

Awesome

By Vinster7 |

We stopped by for lunch after a movie. Service was outstanding and nice decor. Now the BBQ, I had the pulled pork and tri-tip and wife had the sliders. Now we've had just about every BBQ in San Diego and I have never had pulled pork this good. On top of that, the sauce was amazing and the BBQ sauce was fantastic. I read some of the other negative reviews but we had a great experience and are planning on making the 30 mins drive back this weekend for another meal.

Excellent food right next to the DoubleTree Hotel

By JoFo2014 |

Wood Ranch had some of the best barbecue I've had outside the South. It was good enough that I went there twice in four days.

Save your hard earned money

By Mike D |

I got out of my car in Mission Valley and could smell the wonderful smell of smoking meat delicious, I asked the serve where the smoker was he said it was somewhere else and wished he knew because he would like to get some freshly smoked meat ( clue #1) I ordered the brisket and my friend ordered the beefy ribs. He said at least they were warm, I personally have never has dry brisket but there is a first time for everything. It was throughly cooked and dry because it was reheated in broth. Not that fatty liquid filled with flavor from the meat, smoke and spices but that stuff you get in a can. Nice place inside people were nice but the food was a complete waste of time. This was the first time I have never been to a BBQ place and left hungry.

So good!!

By raz4567 |

Went with family to Wood Ranch on our son's recommendation. On arrival we couldn't work out how to get up to the restaurant and eventually had to get to it via the Hilton Hotel lobby, however once we got to the entrance we realised that it was part of a small shopping complex with a huge car park in front, our satnav had taken us a different route!!! We found the staff extremely friendly and helpful. The menu was extensive with lots of different combinations to choose from. Soft drinks were huge and refilled free of charge you didn't even have to ask your next drink is brought to you as you finish your first. Food was excellent I can recommend the BBQ ribs and steak they were cooked to perfection and so tender. For dessert we had cheesecake. We were expecting a slice but a whole cheesecake turned up about 5 inches in diameter and tasted wonderful but we couldn't eat it all so asked for a carry out box which they were pleased to supply. I would definitely recommend you try this restaurant, we couldn't fault it!!!

Great BBQ-Great Service-Great Selection

By garynordstrom |

We have enjoyed lunch & dinners on four occasions at the Mission Valley location. The Tri Tip & Baby Back Ribs, our two favorites and the Onion Straws & beans are a must. You will find a great menu, with many combos of meats and the staff are very warm & friendly.

New Years Eve Dinner

By Gbolahan S |

Driving around mission park to find a burger place to be available, so my little one can have a burger and ran into this place. The food there was pretty good, the ultimate burger caught me off guard that burger is pretty big. The tri-tip is also reccomendation for trying meals, But overall experience and service was good.

Solid BBQ

By Johnny Trekkie |

They got some pretty good babyback ribs, and definitely much better Chili's, and perhaps 2nd best in San Diego(Phils BBQ is #1 for baby backs, sorry!). However, unlike Phil's, this place has a lot more variety of meats and sides all served in a much classier environment by friendly staff. Also unlike Phil's, you don't have to wait 45+ minutes and you can even make a reservation. You also get a classier environment with full wait service...though that means you must leave a 10-20% tip, unlike Phil's. $23.00 for my hearty combo of baby back ribs, brisket, asparagus, and mac n cheese...all mentioned were delicious and filling. The wife's tri tip blue cheese salad was wonderful and hearty as well. If you're an unhealthy carb lover like me, you'll love the free buttery rolls. I'll probably come back here someday when I'm in the area.

Very Good

By kerrielikestotravel |

Buckeye Burger and Brisket, both were good. Need 100 characters to finish out my review. just a few more . . .

Delicious BBQ

By DALE S |

Wife and I had lunch here. The Tri tip was melt in your mouth delicious. Service was excellent. The tri tip sliders were very filling. Numerous beers on tap.

The Ribs Are Terrific

By SoCalMare |

It's hard to stay away from this place when the aroma of wood smoke drifts over to Friar's Road - ! The only menu item I've had are the wood smoked ribs and they surely taste as good as they smell. I recommend them. Too, ambiance is pleasant, service prompt and attentive, and pricing is fine.

Stumbled Upon This Place

By VinoQueen0214 |

We had just gotten into town and needed a place to eat and have a drink. We were driving this place so we decided to try it. The inside was nice and it smelled great! We started with drinks, beer and cosmo, both cold and great and wings. Our entrees were pulled brisket sandwich and brisket steak. Both moist and full of flavor. The BBQ sauce was amazing! We will definitely be back next time we are in San Diego.

Great food and excellent service - even when very very busy!!

By Karen B |

Went to restaurant with my family - including teens and adults - and ordered a variety of foods and everything we had was excellent! Chopped tri tip salad, bbq shrimp, appetizer potato skins/chicken, tri tip sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, and chocolate cake dessert. Nelson was our server and he would anticipate our needs before we even knew we needed something - like lemonade refills, dirty dishes swept away - and when he wasn't right there someone else was. But the best is that their service was not intrusive - just excellent - and they were slammed with a line out the door the night we went.

Hidden Gem for Wood Fired Fare

By S6303IXchrism |

Attached by a walkway to the Doubletree Hotel in Mission Valley and the backside of a small mall it would be easy to mistake it as a humdrum Hotel restaurant or strip mall nothing. We left the Hotel and tried the buggies in the area that all had huge long waits so decided to come back to the hotel and just take our chances because while comfortable busy there was no wait. Best decision of the trip! Fabulous food and perfect service. Highly Recommend not only the restaurant but the “The Ultimate”sandwich. Will return every trip to San Diego now as a destination eatery location!

Excellent food!

By travelingCAgal |

After going to the movies in the Hazard Center shopping center in Mission Valley we stumbled across this restaurant and decided to give it a try. What a pleasant surpirse it was! We ordered the trout dinner and it was absolutely delicious!!! We would definitely come here again!

Casual place for decent BBQ & drinks.

By Joshua |

Stopped in because I in the mood for BBQ and this spot was close to my hotel. Smelled like a real BBQ joint inside fire being in a little shopping center. Servers were very friendly and welcoming. I had the St Louis ribs and brisket, both were very tasty with good smoke flavor! The chipotle-cherry sauce paired well with the seasoning on both meats. I also had the steamed broccoli and grilled asparagus; pass on the broccoli but order the asparagus. Try the Newport Lemonade, very fresh and light.

Delicious BBQ.

By rpisces |

Delicious BBQ. I had the brisket sandwich, my friends had salads. Everything was tasty, they bring out garlic rolls while you wait for your entrees. Service was on point. Plenty of parking. Restaurant is at the very far end of Hazard Center, next to the hotel

EXCELLENT FOOD AND SERVICE

By dawnb843 |

Came here to eat an early dinner before the AAF FLEET Football game. My husband had the Santa Fe Grilled Chicken Sandwich with steamed broccoli and am Arnold Palmer which he enjoyed. I had their Wood Ranch Margaritas on the rocks, which were quite good. I also had three BBQ Ranch Salad with Tri Tip along with their very good garlic bread. It was excellent. My husband even decided to help me eat both. The service was terrific too. We would come here again before a game at the old Qualcomm Stadium.

good selection and good quality

By Cinzia B |

typical american BBQ but with a very good quality and with some special added taste. a good selection of food and beers. reasonably priced

No flavor, average

By Alan S |

If you like smoked meat don’t waste your time with Wood Ranch. The brisket was tender but no smoke ring. It may has well been boiled. Same this the tri-tip, no smoke on it and over cooked. Sides were extremely average.

Packed!!!

By bigJohnny670 |

Went here on Saturday. Wait is out the door. They do accommodate large groups. They do have a large facility. Servers are friendly and thorough. Food came out fast and everything was on the dot. Especially we had so many special requests but everything came out as we have asked. Really like this place.

Excellent

By Anna Banana |

Our company was attending training at the Doubletree next door and decided to host a group dinner here. The drinks were delicious, as was the food. They handled our large party with no worries.

Super Awesome First Impression

By Tammy E |

I took my husband there for his birthday dinner. I had the 8 oz center cut fillet my husband had a bbq 2 item combo with ribs and kielbasa. The smell draws you in; we've wanted to try it due to the smell when we have traveled by it on the trolley so often. We really loved the decor and atmosphere.

Good service but ok Food

By Jim G |

While staying next door for business, my coworkers and I decided to eat at Wood Ranch for Happy Hour. I ordered the Ribs and the Buffalo Wings. They are both appetizers. The food came fairly quickly and the server was helpful. The ribs were very small but tasted decent. The wings were over done and just so so. I did not have any alcohol so can’t comment on that. I would come back again and give them another try next visit.

Chain restaurant good for barbecue steaks and shrimp

Great chain restaurant known for good steaks. We walked over from the Doubletree hotel next door. Good service and comfortable seating.

Good BBQ

By Rachel35394 |

I am a simple girl who likes a good beer and barbecue. I got both in one shot. Chicken was perfectly juicy, and sauce was just right. Also had a super excellent beer that I bragged about drinking to my friends.

Good food excellent service.

Gabby our waitress was on point with our needs . Not overwhelming , when a plate was empty , gone . When our drinks were half , filled . Excellent location and prices .

Excellent BBQ restaurant

By Paul M |

We visited on the 10th August after 9 pm and were probably the last guests to enter. We were greeted with a smile and quickly shown to our table. The service was excellent and the food was really tasty. My son had the hot dogs and commented "they are the best" the rest of the party had either BBQ chicken breast or half a chicken. You get to choose different sauces and sides ranging from fries to rice. This is a really nice place with a full bar and it is really clean. Plenty of choice on the menu.

Went ot experience food and enjoy happy hour!

By Deborah D |

Poor service , good food. Not the best BBQ in town. I wanted to try it out, learned about ot on a recent visit to Kinkos. Now my second visit ine take out and one eat in. Poor service. Feels like a chain restaurant that does not care.... This is my final visit.

Just ok

A friend and I stopped here for lunch. The service was really good but I wasn't wow'd by the menu choices, the prices, or the food.

Great take-out, next to the DoubleTree Inn

By Hiistory-Buff |

I was staying at the DoubleTree Inn next door to the Wood Ranch, and I ordered take-out one night. I ordered the Carolina pulled pork and a Caesar salad. The Wood Ranch wouldn't sell me a beer as take-out (probably some law against it), so I got my beer at the DoubleTree Inn. Excellent food, excellent service. Recommended.

Nice restaurant, but small portions

By rondachapman |

The food was good and the ambiance was nice, but the Brisket Sandwich we were served was the smallest I have ever had in any restaurant. It would not be enough for most men.

Nice quiet place, I was not impressed by the food or service.

By slovaktoo |

It's BBQ. If you are going to go a little upscale with BBQ, you need to have at least: A. REALLY good BBQ, B. REALLY good service, C: some other hook like tremendous local beer selection (especially in San Diego, the craft beer capital of the world.) Sadly, Wood Ranch was 0 for 3. The waiter, on one of the rare occasions I saw him, talked up the tri-tip steak. So I gave it a try. My "medium" cook had not a bit of pink anywhere. And obviously the omnipresent sauce was meant to cover up a tough piece of meat. The beans and slaw were entirely unremarkable. I can name two BBQ place in San Diego that while much more casual, have much better food for half the price. There isn't enough ambiance or service to justify the added expense here.

BBQ Ribs!!!

By Deborah F |

We ate there the first night and it is fantastic!! Their BBQ ribs are finger licking good!! We had BBQ Chicken and Beef Ribs; we will be back....right next door the Hilton DollarTree Hotel!!

Great beef ribs week of Holiday Bowl (+accessibility/parking tips)

By Midwestern_Woman |

Group of friends -- Northwestern football fans -- meeting week of NYE Day Holiday Bowl (12/29/18) all staying @different lodgings on N. or S. Hotel Circle chose this BBQ. Once you figure out that the entrance is on a higher level than entry to nearby hotel, you can drive into parking garage and up a ramp. Decent number of handicapped spots. Ample free parking for whole mini-mall location of restaurant. Pedestrian bridge to higher-than-1st-floor hotel door (used by a friend we were meeting who stayed there). Once inside, some tables/booths are up a few stairs but I managed OK with a cane. Service was paced well. Plenty of drinks on offer; our party found good beer and lemonade. The largest dinner of beef ribs was my selection. The ribs had WAY more sauce than Texas beef ribs, but the meat was long-smoked tender and flavorful. Some fat, but a solid amount of tasty beef. Impossible to eat without mess/picking up rib, but with it! Other in party diners spoke well of brisket. Mixed opinions on taste of sides. With hotel kitchenette, I refrigerated leftovers and with microwave, I had heated lunch and a snack later. Still tasted great, so a good value despite meal price of about $30.

Terrific Barbecue for Anytime

By Marshmallowman |

We went to Wood Ranch in Mission valley on a whim. I ordered the combo of smoked brisket, cherrywood and regular beef ribs, which came with peanut coleslaw and quinoa side dishes. All were just terrific, period. Great flavors, soft brisket you can cut with a fork , awesome sides so good a cleaned my plate. MY server brought me a new iced tea after I drank half, without being asked, which I very much appreciated. Great staff and great meal!

Top restaurant!

By Marion V |

We found this restaurant by tripadvisor. Our last evening in San Diego and we were looking for a good American restaurant. We found that in the Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill. They serve topfood. We had the ribs and burgers and everything was really delicious! Also the garlic buns they serve you with your drinks, they were amazing. The waiter was relaxed and had everything under control. In stead of putting a new refill on the table he asked us if we wanted a new one, that was really good. We had a great last night in San Diego and we will be back for sure.

Juicy steak. Nice atmosphere.

By Colbox |

The decor is very nice and although the place was busy, it was not too noisy. There is a very good selection of beers. I had the top sirloin and broccoli. The steak was very good and the broccoli was a little undercooked. There are many BBQ options and desserts. Free parking.

Burgers and barbecue

By Rorschapin |

We had cocktails, burgers, brisket sandwich with fries. Nice selection of cocktails to try, crispy fries. Burgers had a nice barbecue taste and perfectly cooked to your liking. Brisket sandwich was shredded beef. Not highly spiced

Good food

By PatrickB |

While in the area on business I ate here twice, both times using take-out. I didn't have any of their signature dishes (it's BBQ, I think) -- I had Salmon on a Cesar salad and then Salmon steak another evening. Both times the food was delicious.

Average beef ribs. Where's the beef?!

By yorkie1552 |

I ordered the beef ribs with mashed potatoes and salad. The restaurant smelled amazing as they use wood burning ovens. The beef ribs were flavorful but lacking the meat. Disappointing.

Meaty Place

By Marge P |

Our server, Steve, kept up the pace in every way. He answered every question and helped all of us pick great menu items. The grilled corn was my favorite. The rolls helped to assuage our hunger as we waited to receive our entrees. The entrees were a good portion size so we could finish them without being stuffed. The ambiance was rustic and romantic - even with kids!

Outstanding BBQ and selection

By KRANDCO |

We've eaten here twice now and both times the food was excellent and the service outstanding. They have a large selection of items to choose from. They also have several size options for your main entrée to choose from and then you can add sides as you wish. Kind of like "build your own meal."

Delightfully delectable

By Suzanne C |

The 15 minute wait was SO worth it. The steaks were cooked exactly as requested and so tender, almost no knife needed! Nice atmosphere and waitstaff was very attentive. Highly recommended this for steak and baked potato! Will definitely go again!

OK but not great

By V N |

Just OK barbecue and sides. Baby back ribs should fall off the bone, not be fought off the bone. Could be higher quality for the price. Service was top notch however.

A Very Nice Dinner

By Jeff R |

Was at a conference at the Double Tree next door and made reservations for later in the week for about 15. We arrived on time and the reservation was ready, walked in and was immediately seated. Dinner on the patio was more special. Each of us ordered off the menu of a variety of dinners and the staff was very thorough and friendly, helping each other attending to all in our party. One ordered the Tri Top, a second had a salad, and another the Brisket with one of the sides of Peanut Cole Slaw. All were very pleased with their meals and the Peanut Cole Slaw was something very well enjoyed. The brisket had a slight bit of heat from the dry rub and the bbq sauce on the side was a good addition. The view of the hills of San Diego was a nice treat. The peach cobbler with ice cream was excellent! Instead of trying to figure who was on each bill, we were handed each separate bills that worked out well. The entire evening was a great experience and from talking with all the others, they really enjoyed liked all they ordered and the staff went out of their way to make our evening so unique! It was a great evening.

Excellent service and food

By Nancy Q |

The steak was cooked perfect and the service was excellent. There are drink specials on Tuesdays which we took advantage of.

Fabulous food at a great price.....

By Suzie L |

I went to this restaurant with 8 other people and we able to get separate checks - imagine that....we were thrilled as most restaurants will not do that. I had the Carolina Pulled Pork and "both" coleslaws that were on the menu - the food was delicious and all in attendance stated that they would be back. The ambiance is so nice compared to your regular, run-of-the-mill barbecue restaurants too. Needless to say, I cannot wait to go back....

Okay

By ellie b |

Had a family dinner at Wood Ranch. Service was good, staff friendly. Food was okay, the ribs didn't fall off the bone a little tuff. I wouldn't go back.

OUTSTANDING

By Loren Smith |

Food and service were both exceptional. Great experience all around. My friend ordered the half chicken and said it was just amazing. I had the pulled pork and it was brilliant!

Tastes as good as the other Wood's Ranch BBQ locations

By Eric G |

I have eaten at: Camarillo Anaheim Hills Irvine Spectrum And now Mission Valley I have been eating at this chain for 12+ years and I am rarely disappointed. We took some clients for lunch. The beef ribs were yum yum The Tri-tip was ok a little dry The salad was good The lemonade as always was tasty Corn on the cob was good Also good cole slaw. We got in quick Food was served up quick. Clean restrooms Had a window seat which was nice Can't really say I have every been disappointed at one of their locations.

Mac n Cheese

By 927francesd |

I was looking for something light. The mac n cheese was filled the bill. The menu had interesting and appetizing selections.

Nice Restaurant, Average Food

By rudyboomer |

We were looking for tasty smoked ribs while in San Diego & tried the Wood Ranch. The service was good, the atmosphere was nice, but the food didn't impress us. The baked chicken tasted like overdone baked chicken. No fall off the bone, well spiced succulent taste. The ribs had the taste & flavor of baked ribs with the sauce added after the fact. That's not how we do it Chicago, so we left disappointed.

Tender chicken breast and beef ribs

By Adan R |

Dinner with customers, I had the chicken breast and it was tender and tasty, beef ribs also great texture and flavor.

Good BBQ

By Doug L |

Great food BBQ was good smelled the smoker I new there was some BBQ in the area. Had the Baby Back ribs had a tri tip sandwich beans mac and cheese its right by the trolley stop at Hazard Center San Diego

Poor service, bad food, awful experience

By CyrusMoo |

I had heard so many great things about this restaurant, I was looking forward to trying it. Anything had to be better than the previous restaurant that occupied the space at Hazard Center --- at least that's what I thought. Well, after everyone else in my party received their food, I was told that my order -- a grilled vegetable salad -- would take another 45 minutes to prepare. This was 30 minutes AFTER I had placed my order. Why does it take over an hour to prepare a salad? I switched to a house salad with chicken, which the server promptly brought to me. Unfortunately, I couldn't eat the salad because the chicken was raw on the inside. The experience was horrendous. I will not return.

Great Service, delicious food

By petramapu |

Dined here a few times. Food was always great, service wonderfull. Really booked on weekend nights. Also take away possibility, choose the left door at the front for that.

Great beer and barbecue hit the spot!

By Ben R |

Exceeded expectations for a chain restaurant at a shopping center. The barbecue brisket was spot on, beer selection was extensive, and the service and atmosphere were great. Would definitely go back!

Amazing! Even for a non-meat lover :)

By BlessedMamaWeaver |

I really love this place! I am not a huge lover of meat, usually 1-2 bites and I am fine, BUT let me tell you, the way the cook their brisket and chicken is super good! I have never dined in, I always have ordered to-go at work. The to-go packaging is impressive, keeping all the contents secure, and strong enough to eat from. Personally I love the Mashed potato's, BBQ Chopped Chicken Salad, and baked potato. Brisket is done just right, and full of flavor as well, one time was more fatty than the other when I got this, but both good. The rolls are super amazing, and tasty! Brussels Sprouts are a very yummy side or addition to any meal. For desert I have tried the Peach cobber, it was good! I am sure in person at the restaurant would have been even better!

Great ambiance, service, and amazing BBQ

By Steve O |

Service was great...try the Onions, as they were phenomenal. Great Tri-tip, some of best we have had. Prices reasonable

Great Food

By SanDiegoTJ |

We were looking for a new restaurant to try out and discovered Wood Ranch near Fashion Valley. It is located in the back of Hazard Center. (formerly Trophys and Randy Jones BBQ). The restaurant is very nice and open in appearance. The booth we sat in was comfortable and roomy. We were seated immediately. The menu has a nice variety food and adult beverages, including a nice Whiskey list. The service was Fantastic and our server was exceptional. They have a nice selection of side dishes and a homemade soup. We both ordered steak, I had the ribeye and she had a center cut. We were pleased with our choices. The food was flavorful and cooked perfectly. We shared a chocolate cake dessert that we enjoyed. I would definitely give this Restaurant a try.

A great, relaxing meal for the whole family

By daddysizzle |

Even with small children in the restaurant was quiet and relaxing. The food was the best as always and the staff are top notch. You can always rely on Wood Ranch for a great meal and a good time.

VERY IMPRESSED and that means a lot!!

By tennis1031 |

Just home from celebrating our son's 23rd dinner and are so glad we chose WR!!! Literally everything we had was amazing! We had the BBQ chicken potato skins, spinach dip and sliders to start. So good! For dinner we had a loaded baked potato with pork. The Kansas City steak was cooked to perfection . The tri tip salad and the garden salad with grilled smoked chicken were amazing. Super fresh greens and yummy ingredients. The warm garlic rolls were to die for as well. Service with a smile and meal served promptly. LOVE THIS PLACE and I'm picky y'all!! Will return :)

Fast and excellent service

By Cesar A |

Very nice place that puts you in the mood to have a great BBQ, the food was excellent as well as the service

Disappointing

By soccerdadmike |

I went to WoodRanch BBQ two months ago, when they first opened. While the staff was inexperienced they made up for it with passion and effort. Today I returned looking forward to the lunch combo of sliders and a side salad. On the last trip my friends and I really enjoyed the lunch combo. Unfortunately this visit left me very disappointed. Upon arrival we were immediately seated but no server came to offer drinks or take our order for 15 minutes. When we asked the hostess, a server became available and took our order. The rest of the service went well. My salad was good, but the brisket slider was dry and overcooked. I also was wondering if the brisket slider was a way to use up bits of meat instead of giving slices of brisket. My second slider pulled pork, I believe was bad meat. Three people in my group got the pulled pork sliders and we all noted it tasted "funny". After lunch we all experienced nausea, except the one person who ordered a burger. Between the food and the service I will not be back. There are better BBQ places and plenty of restaurants in Hazard Center to get lunch, without getting sick.

" Great Menu Variety and Delicious Tender BBQ "

By David Miller |

For Fathers Day, my daughter and her husband took me and my wife to Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill in Mission Valley of San Diego for Dinner. The venue is constructed inside and out with all beautiful Red Brick, which just reminds you of what a BBQ place is suppose to look like. Chelsea our server, was very nice as she answered all of our questions about the Menu with her smiling face. Wood Ranch has a great variety of Appetizers, and have a large selection of craft beers for sale. We got the warm Artichoke dip which include a delicious Salsa Dip also. My wife's The Pulled Pork entree was huge, and the Pork was so tender. Her Sweet Potato side was also delicious. I had a Combo meal with Thin sliced tender Brisket, paired with a half a rack of Baby Back Ribs. Everything I had was very good. Wood Ranch also has many different Signature and Premium Sides, that are included with your meal order. Oh ! and their Garlic Rolls are So........Good ! They are worth the visit to Wood Ranch by themselves. Also Wood Ranch has different types of BBQ sauces that you can order with your meals. They are all very Yummy ! Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill is well worth a visit.

Excellent but pricey BBQ

By BRDchelseafans |

We were a bit putoff by the prices but gave it a go, sharing a side and getting the smaller a la carte portion of meat which was plenty. The ribs and brisket we had were both excellent, as were the fries. Service was very good, and parking is free. Not sure we would go back, but we weren't disappointed with the quality of our meal.

A pleasant surprise right next to our hotel

By CJinFL |

Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill is a regional chain that’s relatively new to San Diego. It’s the latest tenant in a location where restaurants seem to struggle, but the new owners totally transformed the decor and made it much classier. It’s right next to the DoubleTree Hotel, and we wandered over one evening. We would have loved to sit outdoors, but it was cool and rainy, so we ate at the bar. Wood Ranch offers a wide variety of BBQ selections, burgers, salads, steaks, and seafood with a decent selection of sides. The full bar offers lots of beers, wine, and cocktails. The bar was a relaxing place for dinner—tasty food, good drinks, and sports on TV.

Good food

By sunshinestatedcs |

We ate lunch at Wood Ranch today and thought the food was very good. Unfortunately our service was awful which impacted our experience. Our server never checked on us, I had to ask three times for lemons, he didn't refill our drinks and we had to ask a waitress to help us....it's unfortunate to have such poor service in a nice environment like Wood Ranch.

Great service

By Susanna D |

We had dinner at this restaurant. The service was excellent. Food was plenty and good. I loved their oily dinner rolls.

Pretty Decent BBQ in San Diego

By isdn4u |

In comparison to Texas brisket or Kansas BBQ, Wood Ranch pales. But for California, it's pretty decent BBQ. Brisket was juicy, but they could have trimmed more of the fat off. The pan beans were good, and the slaw was well done. The atmosphere is quiet and upscale. Service was good and the overall experience was not bad. Would I go back? Probably.

Very fresh and great service and ambiance!

By mary a |

We have eaten lunch there and dinner. I have had the fresh trout twice and it is delicious. The coleslaw with nuts on top is so very different, I could eat two helpings! When we went for dinner we took some friends with us and they also enjoyed the food and the service was outstanding! It was a friend's birthday and the restaurant provided her with a lucious ice cream sundae with multiple spoons! We'll be going back soon.

Visiting family

By patj0yce |

We were at the Doubletree and ate at Wood Ranch BBQ and grill 3 times, twice for lunch and once for dinner. Every time, the service was great. The menu has great BBQ and many other tasty dishes for the non BBQ diners. Atmosphere is fun and casual and you can easily walk there from the Doubletree.

great new restaurant in san diego

By k9andPchee |

Opened in may 2015. The Texas brisket was extremely tasty and no knife needed. The cherry chipolte sauce put a really nice finish on it. Very clean and comfortable place to visit. I would make this a repeat.

The food is amazing. The staff are very attentive

By Debbie L |

The food was really good. Came out hot and delicious. the garlic rolls are the best!! The beer selection and cocktail selection was really good.

Food was amazing!

By ProfJC |

When being seated, the hostess told me the Tri Tips was her favorite. I didn't know what a tri tip was but I ordered it with my servers approval and it was the most amazing beef I had EVER had. It was thick, juicy, beyond tender but still firm at over 1.3 inches thick. Perfectly seasoned with a bbq sauce glaze, I didn't stop cutting it until it was done. The sweet potatoes were magical as my server Nelson, said they were. I asked for a sweet and strong drink and he recommended the Tennessee Peach. Not usually a whiskey girl, but this one converted me. The fiery wings were also amazing. Spicy and Asian tasty. The rolls were buttered all over and also commanded my attention to eat 2 and I rarely eat more than one piece of bread.

Good BBQ

By Italian80 |

The flavor of the food is always good but the meat consistently is never fresh as if it's cooked to order. We've been in so many restaurants throughout So Cal and all seems to be the same. At least the neg consistency is the same throughout. The biggest complaint is it's always "dried out." The ribs that I ordered were actually "ok" this time. Cocktails area always good. Love their bread. Fries are always good

Vegan alert!

By Tami T |

One wouldn't think they'd find a decent vegan selection at a Grill" restaurant but Wood Fire Grill delivers. They make their own vegan burger patty that is pretty delicious. There are sides that round out a meal here. You won't leave hungry.

Good BBQ

By Drew C |

Had the smoked brisket platter. Meat was very tender and their in-house spicy BBQ sauce was very good.

Very Good Dinner

By Mohsman |

This is a very good American cuisine-barbecue restaurant. Situated next to the Doubletree Hotel, I eat here once a year when I come for an annual meeting. My bloody Mary and my wife’s old-fashioned cocktail were excellent. We both had the spareribs, which were moist, tender and very tasty. I also really enjoyed their grilled brussels sprouts and corn on the cob. Our server was very attentive and the food arrival was well-timed. I can recommend this place and will be back next year.

Relax atmosphere

By JOe |

Currently staying at the Double Tree next door to this restaurant. There’s not a lot of choice within walking distance from the hotel so I decided to see what’s around. Found this place while looking out the balcony of my room and it was during dinner so I decided to try it out. When I entered the restaurant it was a dimly lit place and thought it’d be nice to have dinner. The host was nice and inviting. They sat me down right away, it wasn’t very busy so that was nice. I looked at the menu and had to have the 7oz tri tip. For the sides they had many choices but I decided to go with the Mac and cheese and corn on a cob. They served me a couple of buttered herb rolls as I waited and the food didn’t take too long to be served right after. My impression of the food was that it looked delicious and well presented. The Mac and cheese was cooked perfectly and the corn on a cob was sweet just how I like it. The tri tip could’ve been cooked a little less. I ordered medium and it came medium well but was still delicious with the bbq glaze on top. I give this place 3 stars for the atmosphere, service and food, but it didn’t have the wow factor I look for to give it 4 stars. Will definitely try other menus items next time.

New Barbeque Experience

By Marshmallowman |

Last evening, we were driving past Hazard Center when we saw the sign, Wood Ranch. We stopped in to look around. It was only open for 1 year and everything was new. It was not noisy, even though it was busy. The table were big as were the chairs, so every one was comfortable. Lots of TV everywhere to watch the games. We tried the wine after which we ordered the barbecue chicken, 2 beef ribs, vegetarian beans, and fries. Everything was hot, very good, with x-tra sauce at the table. WE split a salad and the service was very nice and accommodating. I am definitely coming back to try the brisket sandwich and coleslaw.

Must Try

By sesuttle76 |

The service, food and drinks were amazing for the price. The waiter Kept out glasses full and kept checking on us every time he passed by. His recommendation for the sweet potatoes was spot on, all the food was portioned well and cooked perfectly.

Tri Tip Terrific!

By Happycamper4CO |

We were in San Diego to visit my daughter and her fiancé and wanted a nice dinner. Kudos to Wood Ranch BBQ for delivering good food and service. I had the tri tip steak which comes with a nice BBQ glaze that does not overcome the taste of the steak which was melt in your mouth tender. Garlic rolls were delicious and everyone at the table enjoyed their meals. Daughter had the chicken wings which had generous amounts of sauce on them. Decor is very nice and we could visit with ease as restaurant was not too loud even with World Series on in the nearby bar area. The only thing we had that I was not wild about was the macaroni and cheese which was a little too fake cheesy tasting for me. They brought my daughter over a free sundae for her birthday - nice touch!!

Expensive but only passable

By LHCReneeP |

35 dollar wine for a 10 dollar value. The ribs were tough. The Brussels sprouts undercooked and super crunchy for the up-charge side. Won’t be back.

Really good food for a reasonable price

By Trish H |

My first time going to the wood ranch in hazard center was last night. I ordered the bbq chicken breast with mac and cheese and a baked potato. The service over the phone was easy and fast. My order was ready on arrival and the hostes did a great job and making sure everything I needed was in the bag, which included several sauces, fork, plates, etc. The entire meal cost about $22 including the tip. The quality of the food was awesome. The chicken breast was boneless, skinless, and extremely tender. This restaurant is great if you like kfc's menu, you will love wood ranch. It has every thing kfc has except the quality of the food is 100 times better.

Tasty, succulent Tri Tip.

By Carole P |

I headed out for a bite to eat and was looking for a good BBQ place for a good piece of meat. It took a while to find this place as we left the sat nav behind but was worth it when we found it. Food was so tasty. Portions were big and staff were really friendly.

RIBS "TO DIE FOR"

By pgreeneca |

I am on the eternal quest to find the best baby back ribs in San Diego. I THINK I FOUND THEM!!! I don't like "fall off the bone" ribs...I like to hold the bone & have something to chomp on...these ribs were what I like. The biggest plus is that ALL their sauces are gluten free. My husband has Celiac disease so we have to be very careful...no problem here. All their salad dressings are GF as well. The garlic rolls, which my husband was drooling over since he couldn't have them, were outstanding!! Unfortunately, they don't take reservations on the weekend but our wait was not too long.

Peanut Coldslaw&Ribeye steak

By Phyllis T |

The peanut coldslaw with the marinated ribeye is mouthwatering good. The coldslaw is a healthy version with no mayonnaise and vineagar highstep! The food is always tender and savory at Wood Ranch. For me it is difficult to resist the smashed sweet potatoes that melt the hardest soul. Leaving the pleasant meal finds my stomach singing a satisfied tune of digestive juices in harmony. When I add a side of steamed broccoli my whole body hums along gently.

an OK BBQ near the Hotel

By SabaOmer |

it is an OK restaurant. all seams to be OK but three is no spark or wah... we were a party of 6 and enjoyed. good option if you are in the Double Tree hotel and have no car to drive farer

Fresh and delicious salads!!

By JoyfulDiva |

I'm always looking for a great salad that is satisfying and delicious! The chopped BBQ salad (I get mine with grilled salmon) is amazing!! And the garlic rolls are over the top. Too bad the location is horrible; you have to really look for it if you're interested! Not very convenient, but worth it. Great carry out service--call ahead; they have a separate entrance and are always ready to go!

Good for groups -- not great food

By iamkelber |

Ate here twice while staying at the hotel next door. It was decent, but nothing I would seek out again. The first night they were out of the brisket and the tri-tip and the pulled pork, so I got the ribs which were pretty standard. The next visit I got the tri-tip which is supposed to be their signature dish, but it was pretty difficult to cut and really nothing special. The mac and cheese reminded me of Kraft Deluxe so nothing unique there either. Nice beer selection though!

Late lunch on a Saturday

By Julie M |

Three of us ate at a tall table in bar. Our server was quick to take our drink orders. Lots of good draft beer choices. We ordered brisket, pulled pork and BBQ Chicken breast. All the meat was tender and full of smokey flavor. I had a baked yam as a side. It was perfect. Others had mashed potatoes. Delicious also. Service and food all 5 star! We look forward to coming back here soon.

Delicious Pulled Pork

By JessicaPS_2014 |

Their house margaritas were good and their pulled pork even better! Service was great! Highly recommend this place if you are in Mission Valley.

Good staff and nice interior..

By lellegooby |

I was staying at the double tree just next to this bbq joint. I figured I'd give it a shot, since I came in late. I do enjoy a good burger, and that's pretty much what I expected from a place like this. Unfortunately everything was cooked rather extensively, which was a surprise since the waiter asked how I wanted my burger, where's to I replied "medium rare". My burger was quite burnt on the outside, and the fries were... Crispy to say the least. This pretty much made the meal pretty boring and dry. However, the restaurant was cozy and the staff was helpful. I stayed for a couple of bears and watched some football. No culinary experience thou.

Steak dinner

By Jhon |

Good tri-tip and the ribs were just ok. The grilled asparagus was awesome and French fries with skin yummy.

Amazing BBQ

By bhoff5 |

I would highly recommend stopping by the Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill, if you are looking for some great BBQ food! I tried the Carolina Pulled Pork, which they gave a very generous portion of and it was delicious! I tried it with the Carolina BBQ sauce (included with the meal) and their house sauce that's available on the table and they both were amazing! That entree also comes with cole slaw and your pick of a side; I chose the grilled asparagus and it was delicious! We asked our server for recommendations, and they did not disappoint. Our server was friendly, and the service was fast. We would definitely eat here again!

Excellent

By dthewey |

We chose to go to this restaurant because it was so conveniently located to where we were staying while we were visiting SD. Though the waitress we had was in training, her preceptor was right beside her, coaching her, and the service was excellent. I ordered the tri tip steak and OMG!!! it was the most tender piece of meat I have ever had at a restaurant, hands down! The seasoning was also perfect. I highly recommend this restaurant.

" Different BBQ Sauces Make This Restaurant Standout "

By David Miller |

My wife and I visited Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill in the Mission Valley area of San Diego last night, and again had a wonderful experience. Britney our server was so bubbly and nice all night as she would come around often to take care of our needs at the table. My wife had the Double R Ranch BBQ Brisket with a side of mashed sweet potatoes and a full corn on the cob. I had a combo plate which had a delicious peanut cold slaw salad, a loaded baked potato with cheese and bacon, carolina pull pork, and 5 All American Baby Back BBQ Ribs. The Brisket was so tender and the ribs were very tasty. But unlike many BBQ restaurants Wood Ranch sets itself above everyone else with all of their different and wonderful tasting sauces. From their original Peanut Coleslaw sauce, to their Carolina BBQ sauce, to the Chipotle-Cherry BBQ sauce, and the very tasty Original BBQ sauce. They are all very different and very good. Oh, and to start your meal with there famous fresh baked Garlic Rolls is AWESOME !

Wonderful - both food and staff

By Hudhuku |

Had a lovely meal here. Food was extremely tasty. Our server was incredible and gave us a taste of a few wines before we committed. I love this little extra, service minded attitude when I eat out.

Outstanding BBQ

By DALE S |

Loved the tri tip. Service was excellent despite how busy the place was. Had dinner before an Aztec game at the stadium. Tap beer a little pricey but worth it.

awesome

By Jill T |

Quite popular decided on a bar seat.Immediately recognized with water and an offer of complimentary garlic rolls. They were warm fresh the garlic aroma preceeded them. (If anything you got to try them) A glass of red wine from the list which is extensive.Full menu from appetizers, sandwiches, salads and entrees with sides.I choose the ribs with the coleslaw (South Carolina style with boiled peanuts) and baked beans. Prices were very reasonable for the area and I certainly received my monies worth. Staff was very welcoming and friendly which made me feel comfortable there alone for a meal.

1st visit to Wood Ranch BBQ and Grill

By Texnmex65 |

Saturday night and the place was busy. The decor and ambiance was great so I had my hopes set pretty high. Prices were in line for a higher end steakhouse so I wasn’t surprised. Service was slow. I had a prior engagement after dinner so maybe that biased my service review. I had a 1 1/2 hour window so I assumed that would be plenty of time to enjoy a nice dinner. As far as dinner goes, the food was underwhelming at best. We asked for recommendations from the staff and he suggested the baby back ribs and tri tip. Ribs were thin and a little one the dry side. Tri tip was okay but came out in a big hunk and it was up to me to slice it myself…expected for a filet, but we are talking tri tip here. The sides we had was the Mac and cheese (about the quality of a box Mac and cheese) and upgraded to a house salad (that was pretty good). We also had the sea bass (grilled). Drink lots of water because it is salty. Overall I have to say it was average at best.

Love Wood Ranch Menu

By Cynthia J |

I loved everything they brought, but my boyfriend said the stead tasted like roast beef... and was tough... Mine was great. He orders his stuff rare.... I am a medium person so that may have something to do with it. Rolls are fantastic, service was super, plenty of parking- absolutely right on or less on wait time. I love the one in Santa Clarita so it was a plus to find this one. I will definitely go back, but maybe with my daughter only next time...hahahaha... Great place to eat!!! Pricey yes for out of towners but normal for locals.

No flavor

By Robert J |

I thought with the smell and look it would be great food. I was wrong we had a group of people and our food had no flavor. The bread was very good if that helps. The restaurant looks nice and has an outdoor patio.

Great Food, Nice Smoky Smell in the Air

By Steve J |

We stayed in the DoubleTree next doo and smelled this place the entire time. We finally tried it our last night. Got an outdoor seat on the balcony/patio area. I had the BBQ chicken sandwich and a Moose Drool beer. My travelmate had a veggie burger and a glass of wine. Everything was great. Wide selection of beers and other drinks too.

Disappointed

I had sauce high hopes since several of my friends raved about the place. I was a party of one, the restaurant was 2/3 full with zero wait. I ordered the two meat combo, brisket and tri-tip with Mac and cheese, and Brussels sprouts. The food tasted fine, but nothing was hot. In fact the Mac and cheese was nearly cold and the meat was luke warm at best. No if I was in a large party, or if the place was packed l, I could possibly understand. It was just me. There was no reason the food should have sat in the window. Disappointed, and unlikely to return.

Lunch Menu

By Bill E |

They used to have lunch specials with 3 different sliders and its no longer available. The bacon on the burger was totally RAW we had to send it back to have it cooked. Was never offered a second glass of wine during dining until the check came. Service was just so so. Bread was placed but no plates offered to use.

Quickest take out service ever!

Got the red quinoa salad at the take out section. I sat down to wait for it, and I swear by the time I sat down, it was ready! Very good, and service was friendly.

RESPECTABLE CHAIN FOOD

By Cary L |

Respectable bbq for a chain establishment. The tri-tip was tender and well-cooked, though the flavor was overwhelmed by the sweet bbq sauce. Same with the baby back pork ribs. Kind of pricey, but very good service and easy parking. Overall, not as good as some of the independent or family-owned bbq joints, but those are mainly out in East County.

Corporate BBQ

By Danma11 |

Corporate BBQ is the easiest way to think of this place that replaced Randy Jones at Hazard Center. The ambiance isn't your typical BBQ joint like Phil's BBQ or Famous Dave's or something similar; instead it's remarkably upscale and classy for a BBQ place. I almost felt underdressed and wasn't expecting that. Our server was pretty on point, so I do have to complement him on that; but the food lacked any distinguishing characteristics except for one particular sauce which if I recall correctly was a spicy peach version. However, I was bummed they didn't just have bottles of their sauce on the table, instead you pick one for your meal and it comes in a little metal saucer. Overall, we enjoyed our meal, but it lacked anything that was distinguishing or local and when your hostesses are in heels and stockings and your servers are in ties, these things add up to make it feel corporate which isn't usually what goes with BBQ. We would come back, but it wouldn't be our first choice for BBQ, just the choice of most convenience because it's in Mission Valley with plenty of parking.

Hits & Misses

By lynmoff |

We had a very mixed experience at Woods. Things started off great with wonderful raspberry lemonade and an order of strings & fries. But then it took a while before the waiter took our food orders and quite a while to receive our food. Hits were the pulled pork, grilled salmon & dry rubbed 1/2 chicken. However every burger that was ordered was overdone & dry. We would go back and give it another try. Portions are large and could even be split.

It ain't Texas, but it is BBQ!

By RCTIII |

Wood Ranch is a respectable chain of SoCal BBQ joints. Our first experience was when we lived in Westlake Village, CA and frequented the always packed local restaurant. With a nice restaurant in Mission Valley, there is now a great place for high-end BBQ in San Diego. Wood Ranch made their name with their Tri-tip and you cannot go wrong if this is your choice. That said the pulled pork, ribs, chicken and brisket are top shelf. Sides are very good, with the peanut cole slaw providing a light balance to the heavy meat servings. Only negative for me was the lack of a great BBQ sausage to compliment my Tri-tip, slaw and skin-on-fries.

Delicious BBQ; a little pricey otherwise.

By Dustin S |

The food at Wood Ranch is not in question -- it was excellent (get the tri-tips! seriously!), but I would caution you that many of the beers on the menu cost almost $8. Do not go here expecting it to be cheap, but expect the food to be delicious.

Not smoked barbecue

By Howard R |

My guest ordered the Carolina Pulled Pork 4oz. The meat was cold to begin with and the BBQ sauce was not even close to Carolina. Way too much hot pepper and was red not typical Carolina yellow with vinegar. Ate 2 bites, I even had a bite and the sauce burned all the way down my throat. I had the ribs, they are not smoked so don't look for any smokey flavor. Tender, but no flavor. We told the waitress about the sauce and cold pork but it was still on the bill. Most of the little 4oz was still on the plate.

Good Food

Great food and service. Make sure to get the sweet potato mash. Salads are really good too. Haven't had a bad meal here and have visited often.

Had the Tri-Tip, looked like a filet when it was served. Big chunk of beef. Taste was good. Sat outside on back patio.

Delicious bbq with great service

By John Mills |

While visiting San Diego, my wife and I were looking for a nearby bbq joint and the reviews on Trip Advisor helped us to narrow our search down and drove over. We got right in and our waitress was courteous and knowledgeable about the menu. My wife had the TriTip and I the baby back ribs. Both were delicious and huge portions on each plate. My wife commented that she expected a 4” ear of corn, not a full ear. My bake potato was very large as well and the food was terrific.

Great lunch spot!

By @ Thailandtraveler64 |

We ate here for lunch the other day and loved it. The dinner rolls were fantastic--warm, yeasty, and coated with a butter/garlic drizzle. The salads were fantastic. I had the tri tip salad and was really pleased. The service was rather slow, but it was a very busy time.

Great BBQ Place in San Diego (Mission Valley Area)

By Luis M |

We recently tried this place through the recommendation of family members and we were impressed. The BBQ is great! Wether you order ribs, brisket, chicken or anything else on the menu. This is among the best BBQ we've had. This place just recently opened in San Diego, though there are other Wood Ranch restaurants in other cities

Great Service and fast hot food,

By Al F |

This place is new, but we walked in, sat down and was being served in less that 3 minutes total. Nice location for hotel and other shopping. But the food, was typical BBQ, but was too much food. I do mean too much. Excellent price for the dinner. Go there for sure.

ONE OF THE BEST BBQ PLACES I'VE TRIED

By lopezd867 |

I've eaten here four times now and each visit has been excellent. To be honest, I gave up eating meat last year, so I can tell you how impressed I am with their vegetarian options. Their portobello burger with bleu cheese is absolutely delicious and their vegetarian salad (the name escapes me at the moment) is amazing. One of my friends had the Cubano sandwich and he loved it. Another friend had the brisket sandwich and she liked it so much that when we went back the next day she ordered it again. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation for its food, atmosphere, and great service.

GOOD BBQ

This restaurant is a branch of one situated in L.A.'s Lemmon Grove. It has real good BBQ, Brisket, hamburgers, etc. The place is nice and it is very easy to park.

Very Good Barbeque

By Jean O |

Went here for dinner tonight and I thought it was very good. I got the pulled pork and it came with coleslaw and a choice of side. I got the corn on the cob. They start you with some very good garlic rolls that are quite good, very fluffy, however they do put the garlic butter on the roll after it is cooked so it is a bit greasy to pick up and eat. But still good all the same. There was a nice portion of pulled pork and I chose the house BBQ sauce which comes on the side. The meat was tender and not overly spiced, it would have been good without the sauce. I, however, love BBQ sauce and the house sauce was delicious. Mild with not bitter aftertaste. The corn cob was very good and it was a whole ear of corn, not just a bit. The coleslaw was also good, leaning more toward the vinegar side, not much mayo with is just what I love. The service was quick and friendly and the place was about 1/2 full as I was there for an early dinner. I would definitely go again, especially as it was just a few steps from the hotel.
