A must visit

By heybrula |

I am a regular customer here. Service is outstanding, courteous, friendly. Food is wonderful. Try the Hot and Sour soup, Okra, Cabbage, Spinach. Spicy chicken with the red peppers is outstanding, the sauce is delicious. They have a new dessert, which I recommended they put on the menu. They have now added it to the menu. It is a delicious sorbet and goes well after eating all the Chinese food..

Flavorable and it spices explode in your mouth!

By carbmar |

Great atmosphere, excellent food and drinks. for starters try the .Shanghai Soup Dumplings and Hot & Sour Soup. Dinner: Honey Pecan Gulf Prawns ( my favorite); Hunan Style Beef ( so good) and Gong Bao Chicken all served in Family style to share.

The chicken & taro egg rolls were awesome

Locals told me that Asian food was exactly what the area had been missing. It was a very clean and unique restaurant. valet parking is offered.

Simply Delicious

By funky_futurist |

Tonight, my husband, my friends, and I had the pleasure of dining at Wu Chow in downtown Austin. As USA TODAY’s First Road Warrior of the Year, I travel a lot. With a fairly simple menu, especially for a Chinese restaurant, I had great expectations, and I was not disappointed. The food was just outstanding, as was the service provided by Taylor. Gracious and informative, just what you want from a server, he was always there when we needed him. The restaurant encourages family-style dining and that was perfect for us. We started with the Corn and Egg Soup and the Shanghai Dumplings, then followed with the Honey Pecan Prawns and Sautéed Green Beans (highly recommended). Most of us enjoyed the Brown (as opposed to white) Rice option as an accompaniment. We all loved the food and will go back again. In fact, my husband and I have already booked for Father’s Day. Sundays, Wu Chow becomes a Dim Sum restaurant. Since we really enjoyed the Dim Sum on the regular menu, we are looking forward to having it again in June. Wu Chow is certainly the best Chinese restaurant in Austin!

You must go here

By fwkim |

We ordered several appetizers and dishes to share. The spicy fried chicken appetizer was delicious. The fried green beans and fried rice was also tasty. The only disappointment was there were no soup dumplings due to the head chef being out for a family emergency. No ones fault but I wanted to try them because I heard they are amazing. Our waitress was awesome. I will be back

Different but great Asian Place.

By PlsfixTraveling |

Really great decor, good food and decent prices. The menu is not your average Asian Place and the food is simple, but very well executed. The place gets crowded but not overwhelmingly, we visited on a Friday night and we were still able to find a table. Overall good place and will be back when in Austin.

Great meal

I have a number of food allergies Worked with the manager and waitress to select times from the menu that i could eat. My dinner was prepared well and was very good.

Delicious dim-sum style dinner

By Nimai Hari |

We visited Austin for a bachelor party. This place came highly recommended and were super happy when we heard they would be able to serve our party. This place ended up living up to its billing. The food tasted spectacular, and we tried a verity of dishes due to our large party size. I would highly recommend this place for some solid food and some great vegan options.

Wanted to be PF Change with salty and oily food

By Daniela N |

Pros: good wine selections, cold ice water, restaurant not too cold temperature, nice patio sitting. Cons: expensive for not authentic, salty and oily food, limited menus, hard to find parking, homeless people begging for money outside of the restaurant, only one type of dessert available and not even that tasty. Hostess and servers did not care so much about us-- I feel as if they were into themselves more. I will not recommend or visit the restaurants again.

Wow

By RWG2020 |

We went for brunch on Sunday and were amazed by the innovative, favorable, and satisfying food at Wu Chow. The menu was extensive and one could dine here 2-3 times and always have different dishes. Of particular not were the soup dumplings, shrimp and leek pancakes, shrimp fritters and pork pot stickers. Reservations are must.

Amazing

By Heather N |

Unbelievable. We started with the soup dumplings and knew at the first bite that we made a great choice for dinner that night. Salt and pepper squid, orange beef and the green beans exceeded our expectations. Amazing food and the drinks were perfect! We will be back many times.

Dinner with the boss!

By Rubester1472 |

We arrived around 5:30 with no reservations and sat around the bar and only waited 20 min with happy hour wine. IT WAS AMAZING!

Good place good food

Fancy place, food was very tasty. staff and service was fast and friendly would recommend to anyone looking for this type of food

Amazing food and service.

By dani_myers88 |

This was our first time visiting this restaurant while we were in Austin visiting friends. It was also our first Dim Sum experience, and we loved it. We also loved that every dime they earned when we went (on one particular day) went to Houston's Harvey efforts.

High end excellence

By Montyguitar |

I can't really decide where to begin. We met friends and family for dinner. My wife and I had never been to Wu Chow but being avid fans of Chinese food we wanted to try it. A friend made reservations and we arrived early. The first thing I noticed upon entering was the full bar. The Crown with lemon/lime soda (yes that is what they call it) was poured and mixed perfectly. Our waiter (Tanner) was extremely nice and knowledgeable. Our friend arrived completing our party and it was basically let the festivities begin. I truly believe we ordered everything on the menu. The green beens were an excellent appetizer as was the okra. I cannot begin to say enough about the okra. Being a homestyle chef myself I will be spending time and money to recreate that dish. Very firm yet tender okra with a hint of ginger and some sort of Chinese hot sauce. Not too hot mind you. Sheer perfection. The Spicy Sichuan Deep-Fried Chicken was amazing. The fried rice was very good. The Chicken & Taro Eggrolls were something out of this world. We also had the Scallions Hugging Beef which rocked bigtime. I know we had more but by this time the crown and lemon/lime water was starting to kick in lol. The atmosphere is very Austin Cool with indoor or outdoor dining. Do yourself a favor and try Wu Chow. One of the best dining experiences ever.

Outstanding Chinese in Austin

By weyl-59 |

A big plus for the city -- downtown and first-rate Chinese dining. We sampled the Dry Fried Green Beans, the Singapore Fried Rice Noodles and the Shanghai Soup Dumplings. Perhaps the dumplings don't match the west coast, but easily comparable to NYC! Service was friendly and excellent, including good suggestions on wine. All in all, a delightful surprise and highly recommended

Very Disappointing Dim Sum

By mingfatsai |

Our first attempt at Dim Sum in Austin may be our last. Upon entering the restaurant, one gets the impression this is a hip place for young Austinites. It certainly is. But sadly, it is not a great place for dim sum. Most glaringly obvious are the prices. Twice or more what you pay elsewhere for dim sum. At that premium, quality should be outstanding. I will say that the seafood and meat fillings are good, for the most part, but the wrappings were ridiculously thick and chewy. I embarrassingly choked out loud when one particularly tenacious clump clogged my throat. Then the scallion pancake... the worst we have ever tasted. One bite was all we could take. We waited at least 20 minutes for this last item. It had a crispy exterior but was filled with a gooey, doughy mess dotted with bits of green, uncooked scallion. These treats should be rolled repeatedly so layers form like puff pastry. When panfried, they produce a thin pancake of fine, crispy layers with just cooked scallion bits sandwiched between. Dining here felt like a wasted morning.

Americanized Chinese ?

By Marcia H |

A group of us visited this restaurant this weekend and came away disappointed. Our server was good, the cocktails were interesting, The space was nice, but the food was not as good as the hype. We ordered the whole fish which was okay, the twice cooked pork was made from a salted pork belly and was really too salt, it did not have the flavor of a comparable dish in Shanghai. The fried rice was also too salt. Maybe the chefs had an off night, If I lived in Austin, I would give it another shot and order something else, but at this rate the restaurant may not be there when I visit again.

FIND THIS PLACE and EAT here

By David S |

There are many outstanding restaurants in Austin but this is elevated dining--the food is organic and each dish really is very well made. We let the server tell us the best dishes and largely ordered her recommendations. The soup dumplings were sublime--and they gave you a crash course on how to eat without making a mess! The crispy noodle dish was outstanding but the best was the tangerine peel Beef. Not a huge dish but we licked the plate. Service was decent--not spectacular but the food made up for it...you don't have to be that great if the food is really good--not slow service just not attentive--I would have spent way more money had the server come by more often and suggested more to eat!

Mediocre food at elevated price

By sablatt |

I might have rated this at 3 if the price was better, but I wouldn’t have returned no matter the price. We had the sichuan cabbage (only strong flavor was the chilis), the chengdu chicken(o.k., but nothing special), and the squid and chive blossoms (no blossoms or flavor). We had no interest in the offered containers for leftovers, a first for me. I will say the squid was tender, and the chicken was only a little dry.

Change the music!

By Marco |

We go once a year when we are in Austin. Usually we get dumpling soup but we passed on that this time to try wok tossed Texas okra and spicy cabbage. Both great. Tangerine peel beef is good as is fried rice “special” with chicken, pork and shrimp. What we didn’t like was hip hop music the whole meal. Raekwon Wu-Tang Chan and Outkast make for indigestion in my opinion.

All was excellent

By LarryB412 |

Dumplings- both types, chicken shrimp beef and squid entrees, fried rice, were excellent. Drink choices interesting but some standard choices too. Very good steady service. Hard to believe better Chinese in Austin.

It's gotten even better

By OberstA |

With another couple, we had midweek dinner at Wu Chow. It's gotten even better since it opened. The selections are wide, prices moderate, service competent. No longer does one have to go to Hong Kong, New York or San Francisco for top flight Chinese eats.

Scallions hugging beef!

By FreeLibrarian |

Scallions Hugging Beef is the most tender, most flavorful Chinese food I've ever had. We were seriously amazed! We started dinner with the soup dumplings and ordered the beef and chicken with celery and the green beans. The meal was enough to make me want to sell the house and move to Austin! The chicken with celery was boring compared to the beef, so next time it will be two servings of beef. And who knew you could make green beans this good?! Be sure to chic out the mahjong tile wall. It's beautiful!

Slooooowww service

By rdizzle |

So, this review was based primarily on the service. The food was actually pretty good, but based on the service, I don't know if I can recommend. There are a lot of good new places in Austin (one of them by the same owners) but if they want people to keep coming back, they need to work on their service.

Excellent Chinese Food

By Peggy S |

In Texas you tend to get Chinese food that all tastes the same. From one dish to another, from one restaurant to another. Wu Chow is different. This is farm to table very tasty food. I loved it. I had fried chicken for an appetizer. The spices were excellent. Lunch was served family style. I had an eggplant dish and a shrimp dish. Both were awesome. I recommend.

Just average

By BigPapaC |

This was my 5th visit. The food on this visit was bland and unfavorable. Even my original fav cumin lamb dish was disappointing. Service was also cold and non-engaging. Last couple visits have been a poor experience that doesn’t justify the uninspiring food prices. I really loved this place when it first opened and several visits after. But the lunch visit I had a few weeks ago, and now this dinner don’t inspire me to want to visit again. Was there a change in the kitchen, or have I just hit some off days..?? Not sure. But based on the last couple visits the hype and exclusivity, and the lack of staff friendliness, don’t match the excellent food this place once served in the beginning. Disappointed.

How many stars have you got?

By Itinerant_scholar |

We went to Wu Chow with high expectations, kindled in part by local press coverage of its opening, and left even more impressed than we'd hoped to be. There are many people who know a lot more about China than I do, but I've been lucky enough to spend a fair amount of time there and to dine in diverse settings -- ranging from high-end places with government officials (who never pass up a chance for fine dining) to an utterly weird experience in quarantine, outside Shanghai, in the midst of the H1N1 outbreak of 2009 (fortunately, they turned us loose). Wu Chow ranks with the very best, and features tastes and textures I haven't had outside China and, perhaps, NYC. We began with Shanghai soup dumplings -- hot soup in a dim sum-style dumpling, and delicious -- and moved on to spicy won tons and dry-fried beans, all first-rate. Madame had a chicken and celery main dish, while I went for tangerine-peel beef; both were accompanied by special fried rice. It's hard to express just how good the cooking is; let's just say they really know what they're doing and they execute the menu with precision. The space is small and decorated in high-end fashion; noise levels were moderate to maybe a bit higher, with a few would-be hipsters who have yet to learn the world isn't necessarily desperate to hear what they did with their weekend, but never oppressive. I liked the fact that the menu features a small number of choices yet covers many regional tastes; rather than trying to turn out ninety-one dishes that all end up tasting alike, Wu Chow pursues selective excellence. Service was friendly, quick, and knowledgeable. (As in China itself, dishes tend to arrive when they're ready, so you might experience a slow patch; but hang in there, as you'll be delighted when your order arrives). Wines and beers are well-chosen and, in the former case, maybe a little expensive, but again the offerings are happy-making. Valet parking is available across the street after 6 PM. Tonight's dinner was one of our best restaurant experiences in years. Needless to say, we'll be back --

Prime Chinese cuisine in Austin? Check.

By Matt |

I must say, Austin you now have a prime destination for flat out amazing Chinese cuisine in downtown. Wu Chow has been in the whispers of many over the past year until its opening late last year. Good news, scratch that --- GREAT NEWS --- there is no need for any whispers. Only smiles. And a deep seated satiety for daily, Austin fresh, and tasty Chinese cuisine. For startes, everyone has mentioned the made fresh daily and delicious SOUP DUMPLINGS. And for good reason, they are a must! The Chicken & Taro egg rolls are unique and tasty. The Hot & Sour soup is authentic, spicy, and worth every cent. On to the cream of the crop, the MEATS. The CUMIN LAMB is out of this world! Very unique dish unlike any Chinese dish I've had. If you desire traditional Chinese cuisine, look for the TWICE COOKED PORK BELLY and TANGERINE PEEL BEEF. The meats in all these dishes are so succulent, seasoned perfectly, and have just enough sauce to make you want more! The BOK CHOY WITH MUSHROOMS and SICHUAN BRAISED EGGPLANT are the perfect pair for your entrees. The mushrooms are enormous, plump and juicy. The eggplant is the best vegetable side dish I have ever had in any Chinese restaurant ever! Also, enjoy the DIRTY OL' FASHIONED - made with Woodford's Reserve and spicy chili oil made from the chef. So, if you want fresh, made daily, prime Chinese cuisine, this is your place!

Happy Hour

By DRBAUKE |

Between 5 and 6 pm during the week you can use a happy hour menu that is a little easier on the wallet. The quality is good and the service is mostly friendly.

Happy hour

By OneLaker2 |

They have a nice tapas style menu for happy hour with 1/2 price wines and discounted small plates. We ordered several items and all were very tasty. The patio dining was nice, but the view is of traffic on 5th street. Too bad it was not up higher for a better view of downtown. Service was very good, quick and efficient. Nice place for Chinese food.

Dim Sum amazing. Service even better.

By John G |

Wow, We had dim sum twice during a two-week visit to Austin. The first time we didn't make reservations and, on a very cold day, we sat outside under heat lamps (alone!) - what a great adventure! Great service, great food. The second time we made a reservation and still sat outside - 50 degrees warmer - crazy weather, Austin. Shrimp and cilantro dumplings, shrimp and leek cakes, Shanghai pork soup dumplings (OMG), Tenderbelly Pork & Shrimp Shumai, Chicken & Taro Eggrolls and other amazing tastes. Great service, great food. We will remember our meals here for years to come. Thank you.

Great restaurant for a younger crowd

By Jane F |

The food at this restaurant was excellent. However, the atmosphere was geared for a younger crowd. It was loud and dark--difficult for older people to read the menu and carry on conversations!

Late night gourmet food

By KarmaDrama |

We went here after a show and had the greatest meal! Every dish was a revelation. We had the sweet corn soup, the fancy fried green beans, and dumplings. The tastes were fresh from the farm and wonderfully enhanced with the spices. Wait staff was delightful, full of stories about Austin night life and good food. We walked over from Congress, a short distance and well worth it.

Excellent Dim Sum

By RaeKY |

First time visit and were not disappointed. Each offering was delicious. The soup dumplings unique, not something you get at all dim sum places. Service was good and you can tell they use only quality ingredients. Next time in Austin we will definitely return for dim sum. Don't miss trying if you live dim sum!

Stupendous Chinese flavors

By Nathan W |

Fantastic Chinese food and atmosphere. And I mean REAL Chinese food. The soup dumplings are a can't-miss Austin dish. Do not leave the city until you try them. Wait staff is A+ and don't forget to say hello to Gold Dirty B*stard (the goldfish) near the door.

Not bad…

By dieswaytoofast |

So, this is one of those "chinese, but with excellent ingredients" kind of places, where the dishes actually taste quite good. The soup dumplings, in, particular, are really quite good (if pricey). As for the rest, the flavors are somewhat spot-on. Now, if the prices were around 20% lower, I'd max out the rating :-) (oh, there is also an excellent beer and wine list)

food good, rest not so much

By sweetiesPennsylvania |

We have been here many times and reviewed Wu Chow before. The food is as good as ever but the operation, not so. They seem to follow an inflexible process which ultimately is to their own detriment. We reserve a table outside but it is too hot so ask for one inside. We are told at 12.30 that tables inside will not be available till 2.15. We sit outside and find the overhead fan isn't working. Turns out it is broken. We Ask for another table outside only to be told they are fully booked. We reluctantly order. Twenty minutes later we count at least four empty tables outside. Twenty minutes after that we count a similar number of empty tables inside. It is now 1.30 and as we leave, no customers seem to be waiting. This experience was one of folly and inflexibility Folly because they know we live 3 blocks away and are repeat customers. Inflexibility because someone should be there to oversee activities and meet customer expectations when they can, which was the situation in this case, no matter what the reservation system was telling the staff. Coincidentally, the guy in the hat who usually stops at tables to ensure expectations were met was nowhere to be seen.

One word SHANGHAI SOUP DUMPLINGS

By V W |

This place is awesome. Hip hop music playing in the background with amazing food. The Shanghai dumplings are so good and so is the Seafood Bird's Nest. I'm looking forward to another dinner here.

Balmy December Evening in Austin

By Vickie H |

We sat out on the patio with a nice breeze, a lovely December evening in Austin. To start, I ordered hot and sour soup and my husband ordered eggs rolls. The soup was a small portion but wonderful and my husband shared his long crispy egg rolls. We shared Hunan beef and honey shrimp with both steamed and fried rice to follow. Great Texas wine and atmosphere. Service was very good but starters came out the same time as entrees.

Where great asian cuisine meets organic/healthy food

By Michael H |

We had a delicious dinner at Wu Chow in Austin last weekend. Food was creative and terrific, featuring diverse dishes (noodles, veggies, meats, etc.) preparing with high quality ingredients and done with unique flavors and original concepts. Our server was very knowledgeable and made the experience even better, as every suggestion that she recommended was excellent. Most dishes were served family style which made the dining experience even more fun as we taste tested numerous dishes.

Met a high standard

By Jim M |

We tried to get in for a couple days, but they were booked solid. When we got in on a Monday night it was worth it. It turns out that they are owned by the same people that own Swift’s Attic. That is a high standard. The food was excellent and the presentation was even better than on their website! Service was fast but not ‘hovering’ or pushy. The staff was clearly very proud of their restaurant, justifiably so!

top notch chinese food

By kmjmmm |

We ate outside which was very pleasant. Started off with green beans - very good. This is my second time and this is very tasteful Chinese food. More expensive then most but worth the extra price

Good spot!

By robert b |

Happened to stop in at happy hour, food was very good, service was a little slow but it was a nice night, sat outside, some different offerings, nice to place to stop.

Excellent Business Lunch Locale

By TwoinNYfromVTandTX |

Very good and diverse menu. Excellent ambience. Trendy but comfortable feel. We've visited repeatedly for business lunches--always well received by our guests. Highly recommend. Only downside: not a huge restaurant, so reservations are suggested. Also, parking is available on block away, but it isn't cheap ($5/hour).

Loud Rap Music ruined my dinner.

By robert |

Facility and service good. Food okay, Salt And Pepper Squid was overwhelmingly red pepper hot. The music was very loud Rap ( in an Asian restaurant 😱). As a result, I couldn’t wait to depart their premises.

Wow!

By Jodie E |

Had dinner here on New Years Eve. They served a prix fix menu for the evening so I didnt get to really explore their offerings but what they did offer was an explosion of flavors! This place nails everything: drinks, food, head bobbing playlist and most of all the service. The staff was friendly, knowledgable and attentive. The owner of the restaurant noticed that we where really digging the music and came over and talked music with us for a few minutes. I really felt welcomed and the atmosphere was very warm. Definitely adding this to my regular rotation!

Super Dumplings

By SR-1007 |

My third visit here and the quality remains very high. Better soup dumplings than even my favorite at Din Tai Fung (says a lot). Loved the stir fry green beans. Service was awesome, even in the bar waiting area.

Savory Foods

By timfl2016 |

I came out of the Art City Austin event in Republic Square, and Wu Chow was just across street. Because I didn't have a reservation, I sat on a bar stool though facing the outside through a window, with a great view. The squid with fresh chives I order was delicious, and it came with a sizable bowl of rice, a good quality rice, not just any rice. Plus the chopsticks were of good quality too.

Great Drinks & Apps

By JRFoodieATX |

I loved the soup dumplings and the crispy chicken appetizer was excellent. They also served great drinks in creative drink-ware shaped like parrots which I found fun.

Gourmet Chinese and loved every bite!!!

By jennifersN6023MI |

We picked up our order and reheated later that night. Absolutely delicious! They are known for their green beans, stellar and my favorite of the night was the Pecan Honey Shrimp!!! Also the egg rolls very good to start and so different as presented lengthwise like a cigar! The dining room and patio and bar very attractive as waited at the bar for my order.

Austin Asia

By Frank C |

This place is perfect for Austin. It's a fusion Asian restaurant with good selection and tasty food. I wouldn't call it authentic Asian IMO. I would certainly go back and enjoy it again, the food was tasty, fast and service was friendly.

Fantastic Restaurant - Awesome Happy Hour!!

By Lynn H |

We went to their Happy Hour this week. It was fantastic. The drinks and food were outstanding. I would highly recommend this if you like Chinese food. They do a wonderful job!

Business

By David M |

HOLY $#!)( this place was AMAZING! Not going to lie, if you can manage to snag 8 people and cozy up in the circular booth - I highly recommend the chef's choice. The price is a steal at $35.00 a person and the amount, variety, and quality of the foods prepared and served is unparalleled.

All around great!

By Jennylovestravel_13 |

The Dim Sum was great! I loved the soup dumplings. The price wasn't terrible for two people though a bit more expensive for Dim Sum. The Bloody Mulan is one of the best bloody marys ever. Resist getting the cheap mimosas, the Bloody Mulan is worth it.

Wu Chow - Wu Boo

By Lilligar |

My husband and I were craving Dim Sum, we were very disappointed with food but specially with the service. After we were seated it took a good 10 minutes for someone to notice us, during these 10 min not even water was served. Finally a waitress name Becca came to our table, she was like what do you want? We informed her that we were there but dim sum and it was our first time at the restaurant. This didn't follow with an explanation she said again what do you want? We proceeded to order drinks and ask her how the menu worked. At this time she offered some help and explained how their concept of dim sum worked. It took another 10-15 min to get her back to our table to order the food, at this time the wine arrived. We ordered a few items. it took 25 minutes to get our first plate, right after the first plate all the plates starting arriving one after another one without any order, we didn't have space on our table for the dishes! Another 17 minutes before she came back. We order another glass of wine. Finally she came back with glass of wine, at this time we order one more dish. Someone else cleaned the table and we waited and waited. She never checked on us. We flag her down and ask where our last plate was since 30 minutes has passed by. She informed us that dumpling takes a long time. We were like 30 minutes?!?!? We asked for the check, we paid and left. What a disappointment, we will never go back. Service extremely slow, bad attitude, not helful. Food mediocre.

Wow! Wu Chow

By Phillip A |

My wife and I were in Austin for a meeting and wanted some good Chinese food and we definitely found the right place! We had the dumpling soup as a starter, followed by the scallion hugging beef and pecan prawns. We received five large dumplings filled with pork and sauce and we topped it with a special ginger sauce that enhanced the taste. The beef was very tender and the prawns with pecans was a very interesting and tasty combination. We didn't realize it was Univ. of TX graduation night and the tables were all reserved until late in the evening, but they gave us a table in the bar area. The waitress was cute, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We shall return!

Finally, quality Chinese food downtown

By OberstA |

Sunday Dim Sum lunches are the tops. Excellent and moderately priced. The lunches are excellent with a varied though small menu. The dinners are upscale and often tops.

Simply wonderful food

By Marcia K |

Just had my birthday dinner tonight at Wu Chow on 5th St. Good news abounds here, starting with easy valet parking! I could not miss the Shanghai Soup Dumplings and they did not disappoint! So nicely prepared and presented. We also had the chicken egg rolls, long and skinny and very lovely sauce, quite unique. We decided on the spicy won tons for a 3rd small dish and they very also terrific, again with a good sauce. Our server Holly was friendly and very helpful with our selections. We opted for a luscious lobster and vegetable dish, again in a lovely light sauce that enhanced the flavors! I am hoping the chef will keep this an out it on the regular menu. Decent wine menu, also other beverages. The manager kept tabs on us all night to make sure we were enjoying our experience there. The restaurant was busy and there is a good vibe going there, younger crowd but I also saw other couples, large parties and even a baby! The patio seems quite large and looks like a good bet on nice days and nights. I will be a regular fan at this place. Keep the Shanghai Soup Dumplings on hand!!

Very nice Asian restaurant

By AJMglobaltraveller |

Lovely Asian food. I was seated at the bar as I hadn’t made a reservation but I was well looked after. The Singapore noodles and salt and pepper shrimps were lovely.

Fantastic food with a twist.

By Jo-Ellen A |

This restaurant sticks close to traditional Chinese food but makes it fit for foodies. Instead of pork dumplings you'll find they use delicious pork belly, etc. Each dish is unique while authentic at heart. Fantastic.

Not very Chinese dim sum

By 24112QGal |

Very attractive restaurant with busy bar at brunch. We went specifically to try the soup dumplings but everything was fairly bland - we asked for a side of steamed rice and they had to check with the kitchen bc they don't prep for that??? Even the chili oil on the table was hard to detect the flavor-

Great food

By Edmundlee |

Good service and good food. Restaurant was in good location and fresh food. Well done. When we walk in, the hostess was flirting with a guy leaving and kept us waiting, holding the entrance door. Even noticed the asian bar tender was teasing the hostess.

Outstanding Dim Sum

By Bob W |

Upscale but very reasonably priced dim sum restaurant. The food, jasmine tea, and service were excellent and the location and ambience add to the experience. Great choice in downtown Austin!

Soup Dumplings

By SHFT54 |

Being one who never turns down an excuse to eat soup dumplings, I stopped by just to order them. We were doing a self guided food crawl through Austin and just ordered the soup dumplings. If you've never had soup dumplings, you could do a lot worse than these. If however, you've had really good soup dumplings, like at din tai fung, you're going to be severely disappointed. The pork filling is under seasoned, the broth is too bland and the wrapper is too thick. That being said, they're still far better than anything I can find in Miami. For those who find decor, ambience and service important. The decor is Asian chic, the ambience is upbeat with good music and the service was friendly.

Great Chinese Restaurant.

By heybrula |

Wonderful Chinese Food. Classic but also with creative new dishes. Superb wait and bar staff. I go back almost weekly for the adventure of trying different dishes.

Best Chinese Food I'v had in the US

By Becky E |

I've been fortunate enough to travel to China both for vacation and for work. I love love love real Chinese food. I live in a large town in the US and our Chinese restaurants are disappointing. While in Austin on a work trip, I was referred to Wu Chow and jumped on the opportunity to check it out. So glad I did! It was the most authentic Chinese food I've had in the US. (Keeping in mind that I don't live in New York or San Francisco or some other big city.) The soup dumplings were delicious and I suggest trying them as a foray into something different. The eggplant was very good - not quite as good as a dish I had in China, but that dish was one of my most memorable dining experiences. The green beans were addicting. The twice-cooked pork belly was excellent (featuring peppers and scallions - lovely). My only nit is that the food was a little too salty. That might be an attempt to fit the American palate though.

Great brunch dim sum

By arthurl897 |

Great Sunday brunch. Big variety of tasty dim sum. Nice service. Reasonably priced for what it is. Fried, steamed, bao, all types of dim sum for all palates.

perfect for a sharing dinner

By M.Swann |

In a somewhat dark lit enviroment you can enjoy a fantastic dinner. Service is perfect. Play it smart and order several dishes for sharing. Book in advance. Its popular.

Good but greasy

By phmokda |

The fare here is tasty with the now fashionable pitch of locally sourced ingredients that taste better. I wouldn't know since almost everything was deep-fried or sautéed in lots of oil. The only "healthy" thing we ordered was the delicious "soup in dumpling." Even the green beans were smothered in grease. The wait staff seemed to rotate between four people and one waitress was particularly immature and obtrusive, interrupting conversations with that all time stupid question I hate-" HOW'S THAT TASTING TO YOU?"

Very much enjoyed the Sunday Dim Sum Brunch to celebrate my son in law's birthday. The food was excellent; we especially enjoyed the scallion pancakes, pork pot stickers, sausage sticky rice and pork soup dumplings. The service was friendly and helpful. I appreciated not having to search for parking downtown as they had valet parking.

Good food, mediocre service

By Frank Z |

Went to this place to eat lunch today and was disappointed with the service we received. The food was good.

Just ok

By drmader |

We are spoiled w excellent Chinese, Thai, Korean food in Northern California at great bargains so we felt like this was just ok. The waitress stated all the food was organic and local farm to table? Pecan shrimp, hot sour soup and Kong bow chicken..tasty but wouldn’t say organic and farm to table . Service good, nice patio space in great weather .Benihana cheesy drink type containers.. expensive for average PF changs chain type Asian fusion

Exceptional food ruined by incompetent service experience

By roberto57tx |

We dined here for a special occasion, and made reservations (highly recommended) well in advance. Unfortunately we were seated at a small table that was constantly under attack from drapes blown by the air conditioning system. It wasn't possible to enjoy four courses there, and after being told that there was nothing that could be done, we demanded another table. There was waaaay too much drama required between the staff in order to accomplish this, and we suffered through two changes of waitstaff. The food, when it arrived, was the bright spot in the evening. Cannot say enough how good it was. But the surly staff, who were clearly aggravated with us, ruined the evening. If you care about your overall experience, go elsewhere.

Authentic Sichuan Food

By Jake H |

Wu Chow was amazing! It is a farm to table authentic Sichuan restaurant. There is no orange chicken here, real Chinese food only! It is a small place downtown Austin so book in advance! I did not have a reservation but the patio and bar have open seating. I will definitely be back. I got the Shanghai Soup Dumplings and small plate of Sichuan Deep Fried Chicken as appetizers and then the Twice Cooked Pork Belly to share as the meal. It.Was.Incredible!! If you haven't hit up Wu Chow, take your friends; they will be so impressed with your selection.

Excellent food in great surroundings

By Juanita v |

Food was smaller portions but really tasty and the most authentic asian food I have come across in Austin in a good restaurant. And we have lived in Asia for 15 years... Certainly worth a trip and not very expensive.

Delicious, Creative

By Carla F |

We were able to snag a reservation at Wu Chow (although very early). The food was delicious and the menu was creative. The server was friendly, well informed on the menu and efficient. We had several highlights from the items we selected, so we'll definitely be back for those things and more.

Love this place

By Marlnc |

Really great upscale Chinese restaurant downtown. The soup dumplings are amazing! Good cocktails and nice vibe!

Great Brunch, Nice Atmosphere

By Richard F |

Well, I have a horrible weakness for Asian food - Chinese in particular. So, with that in mind, I should say I loved Wu Chow's Sunday Brunch. The food itself is very good, using much higher-end ingredients than is typical for a Chinese Restaurant, and the space is well laid out. Overall, I'd say it was a very good experience. Now, to the details. First, they have for-fee valet parking, which is a plus ($6). Second, for brunch, you definitely want a reservation; we arrived early, and the hostess found a way to accommodate us which was nice. Our server was excellent, but - and this will sound odd - the standout to me was to finally find a restaurant in Austin with good acoustics. Despite being full, I was not having to yell to my partner to make myself heard. Lovely... other Austin hotspots please take note! Foodwise, it turned out on the slightly pricier side (hence 4/5 for overall), but it was money well spent. The dumplings we had were excellent (the Ha Gow were so good we got another order), and there was only one dish that was a miss for my lunch date: the crispy turnip (good... more for me, I liked them). Drinks were good and service attentive. If you like Dim Sum and don't mind a splurge, recommended.

Bachelorette Dinner

By Jillian W |

Went with a group of 12 girls for my bachelorette dinner. Great atmosphere and service. They suggested family style where they would just bring out different dishes for us until we were full. They asked us preferences and then just started bringing things out. Soup dumplings were a big hit and amazing! 2 girls with dietary restrictions ordered separately and then they let us split checks accordingly. Everything was wonderful and I would definitely go back! Loved their suggestion of the family style tasting.

Great food and service.

By BrownNutOnion |

We were craving something other than BBQ in Austin so booked here. The hot and sour soup was average but everything else very good particularly the spicy chicken and crispy noodle dishes. A nice space and good service too

Dinner Party

By Daniel N |

Wu Chow is always a dinner party. Local entrepreneur, CK Chin, knows his model and executes it well. The food here is delicious, and it has been such a great concept for Austin. We have been lacking an upscaleish Chinese food dining establishment, and now we have one. Food and vibe are always on point.

Very good

By stevej2001 |

This restaurant was different than the china food to which I’m familiar. We did really enjoy it. We particularly enjoyed the walnut glazed shrimp. It is really busy... get a reservation.

Great food and ambiance

By Jason H |

Finally had the chance to visit Wu Chow and must say was impressed! I started with their signature Old Fashion mixed with chili oil, wasn't sure what to expect but it was really good. As we moved to food, I had the hot and sour soup which I loved and for the table we had the Spicy Sichuan Deep-Fried Chicken which was good but also had the Soup Dumplings which were AMAZING! This is a must have from here for sure. We ordered entrees to share as well, didn't love the Tangerine Peel Beef, it was ok, but nothing special. The Seafood Fried Rice was very good though. Definitely would return, the Hot and Sour Soup, Soup Dumplings and the Fried Rice all would definitely order them again.

Lunch

By Coldoll125 |

Entrees of eggplant and chicken good, noodles average, cocktail delicious, service very good. Order less, then order more. Very filling. Local and fresh. Could have more spice.

Came for the soup dumplings ...

By Fabulousniki |

And left overly satisfied, craving more green beans and everything else on the menu. Not because the portions were small (because they're not!) but because the food was unapologetically flavored and very memorable. I don't write food reviews, as I'm not a food critic, but I can tell you that the food does not disappoint. The atmosphere is As weird as Austin, you walk in expecting the other guests to be dressed in business attire, but the 90s hip hop beats and friendly front of house staff, make you feel comfortable in your choice of casual and comfortable outfit choice.

Dim Sum

By JaneT013 |

We had a very enjoyable dim sum lunch here. Pleasant atmosphere. It was fun choosing several different types to try, and most were delicious. Would be happy to return and try more.

Asian Fusion in a Trendy Setting

By treborz64 |

This was our second choice for downtown Chinese food. Chinatown Downtown, yes, that's the name of the restaurant, was closed for a private party with 100 guests...must be good. Gonna have to come back and try again. So we went down the street a few blocks to W.C.'s. It's a trendy spot with fun funky music and some pretty people. Not necessarily family friendly if you've got elementary school kids but your high school kids will love you for coming here. W.C.'s is best described as fusion Chinese...like PF Changs' used to be or Bamboo Club. They have a limited upscale menu and specialty drinks. Great spot if you're staying downtown or visiting. My wife and daughter split the Chicken with Chinese Celery. My son had the same thing. They said it was exceptional. Mild, tasty, not weird...perfect. I had the Two Faced Noodles with Chicken...excellent. Service was excellent from the front door through the meal. Highly recommended for a fun fusion Chinese meal downtown. Bring a date!

Mediocre Experience

By ak2398 |

I expected so much more. Our waitresses were wonderful, but other than that just an average experience. We had reservations, 30+ days in advance. The only remaining option 8:30pm. We arrived a few minutes early and had to wait an additional 45 minutes to be seated, unimpressed with a previously standing reservation. The evening was windy, chilly. We had a table inside, but seated near an exit door, we were very cold. It’s possible this just isn’t my style of food, but I thought poorly of the overall meal. My favorite part was the egg drop soup. Most of the group had mixed reviews, some really did enjoy all of the food. Our waitress served complimentary champagne for us for the bachelorette party, very nice!

Classy Chinese

By Lucille S |

While walking around the city before going out to a bar on 6th Street we googled Chinese food nearby and this was it. Feel really lucky because food was exceptional and it’s an obvious yuppie hangout for dinner after work, mobbed with young professionals. Hubby had the spicy beef and I had the best lightly battered shrimp with pecans, JUST INCREDIBLE!

Excellent quality of dim sum

By Jake D |

Great dim sum for select favorite dishes. Quality of food is excellent. Service was fine but not your typical dim sum; no carts. Everything is made to order which is good because it's fresh but it's bad because if you order more during the meal it comes out 20 minutes later and you've already lost interest or are too full. Everything we tried was very good and with a party of 10 we ordered a lot and had a lot of choices. So it's a bit of guessing game with how much to order, when to order it, etc. I guess you can order everything up front. I recommend it for dim sum and is my number 2 go to in Austin.

Ok dim sum

By Kitkit1260 |

Went to Wu Chow Sunday for dim sum, it was ok but their system for service is lacking. First, it was a cold damp day and everytime the doors to the patio open a rush of damp air poured in. It was very dim and couldn’t see anything. The dim sum would trickle out every ten minutes or so. Erratic. Won’t go back

New and notable

By MitchHellman |

I was aware that Wu Chow was new, but I'm not sure that the place is officially open yet; my impression was that they are still in a 'soft opening' stage, but I've been to restaurants that have been in business for years that didn't provide the food or service we enjoyed at Wu Chow. We currently live in a small town in New Mexico and haven't been to Austin in 18 years, but with the town's runaway growth in population I expected a similar inflation in the price of a high-end restaurant meal. I was wrong-- Wu Chow was reasonably priced and an excellent value. One example: I had a large cup (arguably a bowl) of some of the best hot and sour soup I've ever tasted-- for the amazingly low price of four bucks. The entire check for two with starters, a main course for each of us, no alcohol, and a dessert we shared came to just under $56 before tip. This is why I think the restaurant is still in the shake-down phase; the prices are low. The service was competent, and we were warned in advance that dishes would arrive as they were ready rather than spacing them out and delivering food for both of us at the same time. One note: there is little in the way of signage at present, so look carefully to find it. ...and I suggest that you get there *soon* before they wise up and jack up the cost!

If you go alone and don't go to drink, this place is not for you

By Lucas S |

The options for solo seating are the bar and the shelves in front of the window, which are terrible for having a complete meal with a starter and main course. I asked to stay at a table anyway and the attendant told me that I would only have one hour to eat. The food took about 20 minutes to arrive. Despite the reasonably tasty food, I found myself eating overpriced and with rushed and confusing salon service. It's not like they have the cheapest price to justify this service. Now about the food itself, I ordered the Tangerine Beef and the pieces were very large and difficult to chew.

Will visit each time I'm in Austin !

By T Cheyenne P |

I have a son that lives in the fun city of Austin so I visit several times a year. My last two visits I had the pleasure of dining at Wu Chow. I had never had soup dumplings before so that was a great new dining experience. They are wonderful. The eggplant, by the way eggplant is one of my favorite veggies, was delicious. If there is eggplant on a menu I will always try it and this dish did not disappoint. On my last visit, last month, I was with a large group and we ordered many different dishes. All were beautifully presented, perfectly flavored as described, and enjoyed, but... for me the bok choy with mushrooms and the honey pecan gulf prawns were the highlight. The bok choy had the perfect crispness I look for in that vegetable and it's flavor along with the mushrooms was delicate and distinct. The sauce was subtle and velvety. The prawns were my favorite of the night and I think I could become addicted to them. The crunch of the nutty pecans, the sweetness of the fresh prawns and the honeyed sauce, well, you just have to taste it. If your in Austin please do yourself a favor and have some soup dumplings, spicy eggplant, and honey pecan gulf prawns. You'll be hooked. I would make a special visit just for the eggplant and prawns.

Spicy and large portions to share

By Hystericalhappiness |

You can make a reservation and sit outside in a covered area. The large portions are meant to share. I loved the spicy okra. My husband enjoyed the pork belly. The calamari was tempura style. I would recommend either sitting in the bar for happy hour or going out with a group of four to enjoy many plates. Sparkling rose moderately priced.

Dinner for two

By RMS |

Everything was super delicious. I would definitely come back again. We thought ordering was going to take a little long being a Friday night but everything came out fast and we had a very great dinner.

Amazing Experience!

By ErLee213 |

Luckily for my first trip to Austin, I was able to connect with a friend who has been living here for work. Since he is always entertaining for business meetings he decided to take the lead of getting us in here for dinner. I wouldn't normally think of eating this cuisine during my Austin travels, but I absolutely loved it! We had a high top table in the bar which was perfect. Our server was extremely friendly and attentive. The drinks were great, it's nice to find a place that pours a good drink! Since there were three of us, we decided to order a bunch of food and share everything. Good old family style! Everything we ordered was delicious! I have zero complaints about my experience here. We ordered- Shangai Soup Dumplings, Tender Belly Pork Steamed Dumplings, Tangerine Peel Beef, Sichuan Style Chicken, Fried Rice and the Green Beans. Since my friend frequents here we were sent a dessert to try and it was delicious! I recommend coming here during your travels, you won't be disappointed !! Enjoy! Cheers!

Farm-to-table Chinese

By Gergana |

"Orgasmic" That's how my friend described the Tangerine Peel Beef and she. was. not. exaggerating! The restaurant is family style so we ordered 4-5 plates and shared, which was just enough for 3 people. And every single one of them was delicious. Definitely get the tangerine beef though! The place has valet and I definitely recommend doing that since it was cheaper than parking at the lot across the street. Reasonable prices, for being Downtown, and excellent service. Their thing is farm-to-table so they try to serve local produce. This one will be going into our dining rotation.

unbelievable!!!

By Dan C |

this was just excellent. i couldnt quit eating. everything was awesome.........dumplings, fried okra, fried chicken, even hot sour soup was excellent and better that most asian cuisines. go here. you will not be dissappointed

Good food but terrible service

By 37Frequenttraveler |

So, I have always liked Wu Chow's food and small plate service but feel compelled to write this review after a terrible evening last week. Firstly, the restaurant is not overly full and we had reservations for an outdoor table. Inattentive service gave way to overzealous service - focused entirely on getting us out of there. Being asked every 5 minutes whether we are done, having our plates taken while clearly there was food on the table . . COME ON guys!!! Also, I realize one cannot see smiles under masks but gosh, were these a bunch of unfriendly servers. Get your acts together.

Sublime: An Dining Experience in Expertise and Precision

By Jonathan I |

The first time I came here, I was skeptical. Not that the food would not be good, but that there would be options for me. My experience with Chinese food has not been the most gluten-free nor vegan friendly. I was therefore ill prepared to receive the news that I could eat so much. And eat WELL. The vegetables are sourced locally and are presented with perfect honor. Simple enough to allow the ingredients to shine as they should, but prepared and finished with nuance and complexity that lingers on the palate and urges you forward to savor yet another bite. The chefs are masterful at what they do, and that is evidenced in the crafting of every dish that arrives to the table as they are ready. The service is also very strong, with there being an apparent collective effort to ensure that the dining experience at Wuchow is solid and upholds their reputation. And the management is suave and exemplifies proud hospitality, as they welcome every guest as they would a guest in their own home. I love the decor and atmosphere - clean, modern, with plenty of winks here and there (e.g., an underlit wall made from mahjong tiles, the graffiti inspired interior of the Men's room, the stuffed panda that greets you at the host stand). Though I do not believe they would turn anyone away for underdressing, I would personally err on not being too casual, based on my experience of the clientele that is there on my visits. Reservations are accepted and I definitely recommend them - this place is hot. Well played. :)

The dim sum here is to die for

By She Wanders the Globe |

I had this restaurant on my must-do list before I landed in Austin. We made a same day reservation for our large party of 10 people. The weather was nice so we opted to sit in their outdoor seating. I'd come for the soup dumplings, but they were out. I did have their other dim sum which was tasty and I'm sad to say I ate it all before I realized I didn't get any pics. Some of the other dishes we had that night: Sichuan deep-fried chicken and Sichuan braised eggplant were really tasty. Highly recommend this place. I've heard the dim sum brunch on Sundays is amazing.

Good food, lots of choices.

By Tom T |

We had a nice dinner here with friends who had been before. Great service and good food. Atmosphere is noisy so conversation is difficult.

Tasty food

By Elizabeth L |

Four of us and a toddler had an enjoyable dinner at Wu Chow. This is a popular place. While the menu appears a bit limited at first, we actually very much enjoyed our food. We had a booth and shared everything. We especially enjoyed the dumplings and seafood dishes. Drinks are a bit pricey. Also be ready to eat spicy and highly salted food. Overall, we enjoyed our experience.

My favorite restaurant in Austin (right now).

By Sharon I |

We spent 5 years living in China and I learned to cook a lot of Chinese food while living in the country. So - I am very particular about my Chinese food and I love Wu Chow's. Such a great spot and the food is wonderful! We were there for lunch but I can hardly wait to try the dim-sum and dinner.

Dim Sum brunch on Chinese New Year

By maria_rn |

What a great lunch w friends. We called the night before. There was availability outside at 11am or 2. We arrived early and were just hanging around. A great staff member came out, got our name and checked us in. The menu is so thorough and pretty exciting (would be nice if you could mark it though). We ordered the Fo-Mosas (chrysanthemum tea and champagne) and a special ginger drink. We ordered what we thought was a huge assortment of deliciousness. Everything was perfect. Refills of drinks came fast. Best part of all?? The BILL! 3 girls, tons of food and flowing drinks, $73 bucks! So glad we came here!

Everything was super delicious

By Katherine P |

We came here without a reservation on a Wed night and had the choice of the patio which or the counter seating area near the bar. Since it was chilly due to the rain, we chose to sit at the counter seating area instead of waiting 45 minutes. Pretty cozy but did the job. There were four of us and just asked the waiter to order us food at the chefs choice. One thing we made sure to order was the soup dumplings which take about 20 minutes so ordered these first. There’s an art to eating these, place it carefully on your spoon, I usually add the vinegar soy sauce mixture and add some chili oil. Then bite or poke a hole, sip some of the soup out and eat the dumpling off the spoon. These dumplings were very good, tasty broth and the filling was delicious Food came out quickly but at a good pace between dishes and staff was very attentive. I loved every dish and even though most items had some (a lot of) heat they were so flavorful. Had the Sichuan fried chicken, dry fried green beans, hunan beef, honey pecan prawns, and the Yu Xiang Pork. Definitely going back to try more dishes.

HORRIBLE SERVICE!!

By marissa r |

We had recently travelled to singapore and we were craving asian food, so we decided this was the place that reminded most of over recent trip. We made a reservation, everything started perfect, perfect, cozy, romantic restaurant....we loved the food but the service was horrible, server was not friendly at all. We assumed it was because he was busy. so we decided to invite friends again the following week as a double date, again terrible service.. another service with the same horrible attitude. all though the food was definitely delicious we will not be back, different servers, same nasty attitude.

Always great

By RWG2020 |

We love the Sunday Dim Sum brunch at Wu Chow. We had five dishes and with tip, spent $55. The shrimp and leek cake, basil beef dumplings and broccoli were standouts. The shrimp fritters were bland. We always enjoy the atmosphere and people watching here.

Introduction

By RWG2020 |

We dine at Wu Chow for Sunday brunch frequently, this time we took friends. They loved everything we ordered, the dumplings, broccoli, beef pot stickers, scallion pancakes, shrimp and leek cakes. All fresh, innovative and wonderful.

Best Chinese

By thebeejer |

This new Chinese restaurant bills itself as authentic Chinese with a local flavor (farm to table). Get the Shanghai Noodles; they were delicious, as were the other dishes we ate. Service was mediocre; otherwise I'd give it 5 stars. Indoor and outdoor seating is available.

Not Very Organized and Remember the Duck

By Thetipsydutchman |

Family has gone to Wu Chow multiple times. Food is AWESOME!! The duck is the shining star. We ordered and requested the duck on Saturday. Today is Tuesday. Well beyond the norm but not our first rodeo here. Of course we show up and an hour into appetizers we are told no duck. Don't get me started. Also ordered dumplings and white rice. Did not come as well. I was visiting from California and my family talked up this duck and it was a no go unfortunately. Situation was not handled well. All around not a great night.

Not your traditional dim sum

By BayouBear |

So maybe we have higher expectations living in San Francisco but it’s always concerning when you walk into a Dim Sum restaurant and there aren’t any Asians as part of the service staff. It was immediately off putting given the attitude of the hostess and again it’s likely the San Francisco expectations but the menu for dim sum was very limited, so if you’re looking for traditional dim sum then I my opinion this isn’t a place for you.

Best Chinese in Texas!

By KMurdoch |

Had dinner here and we shared the Chicken Dumplings, Scallion Hugging Beef and Double Cooked Pork Belly with dry fried green beans. The food and my Mia Tia were on point no matter how much traveling you have done, the atmosphere and music were excellent, and the service was perfectly executed.

Superb Cuisine

By SR-1007 |

OpenTable reservation worked flawlessly (booked an hour prior). Green beans, scallion beef and soup dumplings were all cooked to order and served fresh. Staff were very friendly and competent. High marks for server Geoffrey. Austin’s water purification problems were explained and no issues aside from having to drink bottled water.

Should Have Been Better

By MKJourneys |

On a business trip some folks in our group heard about Wu Chow (pricey) and wanted to visit. The inside tables were all full (we did not have reservation)so we decided on an open table outside. The atmosphere was very nice. Our party ordered a wide variety of dishes to share. Some were good and interesting others were over seasoned(salty) or bland. The tofu dish needed some type of days for taste. The service was spotty and not very attentive. Our dishes came out in no particular order and spaced far apart so items you would have enjoyed together that was not possible.

Very Uneven . . . Wanted to Love Wu Chow and Didn't.

By DLPAustin |

This is one of the most difficult reviews I’ve ever written because I want to be fair and our meal at Wu Chow was wildly uneven. First off, this is not your grandmother’s Chinese restaurant. If you’re looking for something legit no shi* Chinese this ain’t your can of beer. High end concept small plate foodie Chinese. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing unless, in execution, it is in fact. Wu Chow is on Fifth Street and Nueces and shares the building with a similar high end foodie see and be and seen small plate wonderkind restaurant Fixe (Southern cuisine for another review). We started with the Shanghai Soup Dumplings, which were absolutely out of this world. One of the best dishes I’ve had anywhere at any price. Other starters included delicious Sichuan deep-fried chicken, oversalty Sichuan wontons, and just okay chicken and taro eggrolls. The mains included sensational wok toasted cumin lamb, a nice twice cooked pork belly, and a beautifully presented but bland seafood bird’s nest, which was basically a medley of steamed shrimp, squid, scallops and veggies. I wanted to love Wu Chow and didn’t. It won’t make the heavy rotation list for us. (And that’s not because our server was an idiot who shouldn’t have been doing anything more than bussing the table.) Beautiful interior design, gorgeous chic bar. Crazy expensive for what you're getting and we're basically the most fiscally irresponsible spendthrifts you'll ever meet!

Exceeded Expectations

By Petethekid |

Took my daughter here for a “congratulations, you got a job (next time YOU buy lunch)” lunch. We had the Wu Chow special and the veggie stir fry. Both were great, and she took home enough leftovers for another meal! Thumbs up. Oh, service was great too!

Best Chinese in Austin!

Hands down the best Chinese food in Austin. Authentic dishes, great atmosphere, and friendly staff. Highly recommend!

Killer Dim Sum

By RosieAZ |

Dim Sum Sunday is a vacation tradition for us when we can find a Dim Sum restaurant when traveling. Wu Chow was really good. Wish we had one in Phoenix

Great Dining Experience

By Mark L |

I was told that this was a great place to dine and we were not disappointed. It was our wedding anniversary dinner and we were there on a Wednesday night. We started with 2 appetizers, the soup dumplings(recommended) and sichuan fried chicken. Both were excellent. Main courses were tangerine beef, and two faced noodles, beef and chicken with a side of dry fried green beans. all of the dishes were outstanding. Service was very attentive without being over bearing. It can be a little loud/lively but did not take away a great dining experience. We will definitely be going back.

needs improvement

By Sibylle R |

Good reviews and farm-to-table always makes me curious. We came out for a 6pm dinner on a Tuesday. Staff seemed rushed, I guess still setting up. There was a SX event on the patio right outside our window, a bit distracting to say the least. Wontons came after the entrée of double baked noodles with wildly greasy meat. It reminded me of meat Fondue when the fat isn't hot enough and each bite was oily. The best part-steamed dumplings, those were fresh and tasty with the homemade dipping sauce. We both end up burping up our dinner all night which is a bad sign and could not justify the cost. Atmosphere was fresh and young so definitely not your ordinary Chinese but maybe bring up the attitude a notch. Parking across is $15/hour with a two hour max, ouch.

Somewhat divided in my opinion between a 3 star and 4 star review

By Gary T |

I went with a four star due to the excellent service by S---h. It was the highlight of our Fathers day Dim Sum lunch visit. Had I rated based on the food or cost it would have been a three. We shared 7 Dim Sum dishes and while all were good none of them were great. The Shanghai Soup Dumplings at $10 is probably the best dish we had. It is however a very poor value. We tried both baked and steamed Barbecue Pork Buns(BBQ Bao) and both are $9.00. The Baked dish arrived cold so we actually enjoyed the steamed one better. In both cases they arrive with three to a plate so they aren't a very good value either. The Shumai and Ha Gow were $8 and $7 respectively and were good, but no better and not different than the same dishes at other Austin Dim Sum places. The Chicken Feet (Phoenix Claws $8) were again okay but not different than other Austin Dim Sum places. We did feel that the Broccoli (Gailan) was quite good as it had more sauce then most Austin places add. All in all- decent Dim Sum, but expensive compared to other Austin restaurants serving Dim Sum that is as good or better. (and don't charge $9 for parking)

Deliciously Subtle!

By Hugh W |

I had the brown fried rice. It was fluffy, evenly cooked, and the flavors subtly blended together into a gourmet delight. The cabbage was tender and perfectly seasoned. Well done, Wu Chow!

Best Asian restaurant!!

You do want to dine at this restaurant!! Delicious farm to table restaurant. Organic. Lovely ambiance. Great servers. I had the bird nest chicken-vegetable meal (with brown rice). Beyond delicious!!

Really good (pricey tho) soup dumplings

By dieswaytoofast |

So, this is one of those "chinese, but with excellent ingredients" kind of places, where the dishes actually taste quite good. The soup dumplings, in, particular, are really quite good (if pricey). As for the rest, the flavors are somewhat spot-on. Now, if the prices were around 20% lower, I'd max out the rating :-) (oh, there is also an excellent beer and wine list)

Bit chaotic

By Dave B |

It's ok food was fine, service was a bit hectic, driks not arriving, food service was chaotic didn't get the whole course at the same time, thinking did we order duck?oh here it comes! noodles arrived halfway through.Maybe just a one off

Downtown Austin between I35 and a few blocks west of Lamar is developing into 3 distinct neighborhoods; The Convention Center,The Business area around Congress and a rapidly growing residential area west of Guadeloupe.Wu Chow is a welcome addition to the residential area and offers Chinese cuisine from ingredients that Austinites love;fresh, seasonal, local and innovative.Excellent spicy squid,Szechuan striped bass,Shanghai soup dumplings, spicy cabbage and succulent eggplant.Attentive low key service, full bar with a decent selection of wine by the glass.

New Upscale Asian restaurant

By Rockdoc7 |

I took my family of five here and we had a great time. The restaurant was packed and the crowd was buzzing with excitement for this new restaurant. The service was excellent and very quick. We sampled a large number of dishes which we shared family style. We had the hot and sour and corn and egg ribbon soup which was very good. As appetizer we had the spicy Sichuan deep fried chicken and the chicken and taro egg rolls which was ok. The Shanghai dumplings were very good. Then we had the wok toasted cumin lamb which was very different and tasty entree. The tangerine peel beef was one of the best of the night ...do not pass on this item. Finally the honey pecan shrimp was the highlight of the night. I could have eaten those all night. The dry fried green beans were also very tasty. They have an ok wine list but have some very interesting and unique cocktails. I would recommend this restaurant.

Great meal and great ambiance

By Mohamed E |

Hosted a business dinner for eight and the family style dining was a perfect for a group dinner. Everyone can find something on this diverse menu. The food comes out as it it available which allows for an almost continuous dining experience.

Awful service and oily food.

By Jason Y |

This was the worst restaurant experience of my life. I have eaten in so many different types of restaurants all over the world. From hole in the walls to james beard award winning restaurants, I have lucked out on getting good service until I came here today. The wait staff was rude, confused and we seemed like a inconvenience to them. The food was so so. As a Chinese American, I do not consider their food to be authentic nor does it count as any sort of asian fusion. The valet parked my friend's car in the handicap spot and made us retrieve the car ourselves. I will definitely be telling all my downtown neighbors to avoid this restaurant at all cost. There are so many great restaurants in Austin with much better service. I'm going to get dim sum in Chinatown right now. They at least try to smile.

Wonderful

The soup dumplings were magic. We lived the eggplant and the walnut shrimp as well. Great service. Cute patio with heaters out front.

Eclectic Chinese fare served with special-occasion polish

This bustling restaurant caters to a hip and fun-loving crowd who prize ambience along with flavor. The menu offers a tantalizing range of dishes from across China, prepared with local ingredients. My group, who were celebrating a milestone birthday, particularly relished the green beans and the deep-fried squid but nothing disappointed. Batter-fried pork belly sounded over the top but we polished off every morsel. Wu Chow is a bit on the noisy side and I could have done without the pounding electro-pop. Still, I left wishing that my city, whose Chinese restaurants cater to a huge Chinese community oriented toward family meals, had a special-occasion alternative like Wu Chow.

Wu Whoa Where Is The Waitress?

The food was absolutely delicious, WHEN we finally got it. We initially chose to sit in the patio area, and as the sun progressed across the table, we decided to move to a shadier table. The waitress cleared that table, but did not clean it. After waiting too long for our original waitress, I just took my napkin and wiped off the table myself. We ordered egg rolls for an an appetizer, which we received last. Our vegetable dish came first, (after about 30 minutes) all by itself. About 15 minutes later, we received the main dishes. So, if you are not in a hurry and you don't mind seriously horrible service, the food is really good.

Very good food; the rest? Not so much.

Farm to table is the theme at Wu Chow, and it’s what lured four of us to eat there on our first night in Austin last Monday. The food was pretty good, and compared to other Chinese restaurants, presumably more healthy. Unfortunately, the service rendered the experience more iffy than a tightrope walker on crack. Our meal consisted of dry fried local green beans with preserved mustard leaves; long thin organic chicken egg rolls and taro root in a sour plum sauce; Chinese dumplings; local heirloom okra wok-tossed with ginger and Thai chili peppers; organic chicken in fermented black bean sauce; salt & pepper squid; tender pork belly, twice-cooked, with mild green peppers and local leeks; brown rice; and the obligatory hot & sour soup for starters. Most everything tasted as good as the descriptions with the exception of a couple dishes like the pork belly that were literally swimming in oil. Sadly, slow service successfully slipped our satisfaction in a manner seldom seen by sentient souls in such a situation. We were expected to eat family style, but to the staff at Wu Chow, this also meant treating their food like Tapas. Dishes were delivered one by one in random order, each separated by about ten minutes. We began with the green beans, then the soup, then the egg rolls, then one entrée at a time, then the brown rice, and then, after we reminded our head waiter and even longer delay, the dumplings. This made no sense, and the meal didn’t have the same culinary logic as it should have had. As for the cocktails we had prior to the meal, they too had great descriptions (and names), like Chow Chicka Bow Wow, Nien Nunb, Tsingtao Tshandy, and Bijou-Baijiu. But the descriptions weren’t supported by quality. None of us “loved” our drinks. They were too sweet, and at least one of us woke up feeling not so great the next morning. It’s really too bad, because the idea of a healthy, sustainable Chinese restaurant is a great one. If Wu Chow can make some much needed improvements, perhaps it could someday earn a higher rating on the highly coveted Cherry Wonderdog rating scale.

Nice Asian option for your Austin visit, find this place!

Looking for W 6th dinner option on a Monday night, TripAdvisor steered us to WuChow. Glad it did. Indoor seating was booked, but outside deck was avaiable. Road noise was distracting, but the food experience surely compensated. Apparently had a waiter assigned to our table, but seemed like staff worked as a team to get food out to the table as soon as kitchen put it up. Apparently it is their practice is to serve the family style dishes as they are prepared, not always in the order you order them. The menu features most of the dishes you'd expect at any Chinese restaurant, but when they arrive you will immediately realize they have been prepared to a whole new standard. We typically order a familiar dish or two at each new Asian place we try to compare quality and style; we were impressed by every dish we ordered. Several traditional spicy dishes, but pepper was used to enhance the taste, not burn in a memory.

Great Dinner, excellent choices, good service

A fine restaurant, very well located and quite crowded. One of the few places in Austin where they don't seem to be short-staffed. Good service, but not great. Their menu has awesome options for all tastes, and honestly everything I tried was really good. I'm a fan of spicy food, and they have a lot of different dishes for those into hot stuff. Tried the Hunan style beef and it didn't disappoint me at all. Great fried rice (Wu Chow Special). Good dumplings, not awesome though. It was a hot evening, so I had the Japanese Kirin Ichiban beer, you can't go wrong with it. Wanna get back there and try a few other dishes.

I wish this was in my hometown!

Wonderful food and great service. Our group loved the "dry fried green beans," "spicy cabbage," and "tangerine peel beef" the best. Plus, the dumplings were good. Looking around, it appeared every table had dumplings, but I hope they also tried the 3 items listed above. We didn't think much of the mushroom/bok choy. That was the only disappointment, tho. Reservations recommended.

Tantalizing flavors and exotic spices

By Paulwang127 |

Located in the heart of downtown Wu Chow has become a very trendy place to be at during lunch and dinner for weekends. The modern decor gives no hint that this is your traditional Asian restaurant. This is indeed luxury dining with a lively atmosphere. For appetizers we ordered the spicy fried chicken and main course includes braised pork belly with green onion, Singaporean vermicelli and spicy chicken. The spicy fried chicken comes with an amazing sichuan peppercorn and fried with scallions. The chicken is crispy on the outside and deliciously juicy inside. The biggest surprise is the heat gives off by the peppercorn. The pork belly comes in thin slices and for the best bite try it with the green onion and the cabbage. The vermicelli is hot and steamy and the accompanying shrimp is sweet and fresh. The spicy chicken is full of flavor but falls short due to saltiness of the dish. Overall we love the flavors and the atmosphere; however, we wish all the dishes could come at once rather than sequential. Perhaps it was a very busy night but this is primarily the reason we gave it 4 instead of 5 stars.

Fresh food

We really enjoyed this restaurant. The food was really good and the service was attentive. The peppers stuffed with shrimp were delicious.

So-so, expected better

We came to this restaurant after a number of people recommended it. There were plenty of vegan options. The appetizer was promising. A fried tofu with peppercorns that had an interesting flavor. The fried eggplant was also excellent. The rest of the dishes we got were ok, but not great. The mapo tofu done vegan was oily and not that flavorful. The fermented bean poultry done with fried tofu was also bland. The spicy fried cabbage was crisp, but also not that tasty. The service was attentive, but the staff kept clearing plates quickly and reaching across people at the table to get them rather than waiting for dishes to be placed to the side of the table. At this price point, I anticipated a better meal.

Wonderful

We were at Wu Chow for Sunday brunch and had a wonderful time. Great selection, presentation and service. We loved the pork potstickers, scallion pancake, broccoli with oyster sauce; and shrimp and cilantro dumplings.

Absolutely! Amazing!

We came here for a Birthday and this place was so fantastic! The food is absolutely delicious! The dumplings, egg rolls, orange beef, and soups were all the best I've ever had!! I would highly recommend this place and tell everyone about it!!! Absolutely must go!

Happy Hour appetizers can make a meal

Had a great evening out with our son. Appetizers were great. Wok seared lamb is awesome, and seafood in a noodle nest was out of this world,

Tasty food, good drinks

Enjoyed our dinner with friends here. Nice atmosphere downtown, but can get loud in there. The Peking Duck is an "americanized" version, and must be ordered 48 hrs ahead. Easy downtown locale with valet parking. Would go again.

We made a reservation for 5:45 on a Saturday night and could only get outdoor seating. On arrival we asked about indoor seating and were told none was available even though mast indoor tables were empty. Service was quick and professional. The menu states that all dishes are family sharing size, which is quite an exaggeration. They are sharable if you are a party of two, but you should order at least 4 dishes. There is no order to delivery- they bring things out in no order other than the soup first. The "Hot and Sour Soup" is decent but at $6 for a very small cup overpriced. The "Seafood Nest" is also decent but small and mostly nest (which is deep fried noodles). At $29 it is way overpriced for two small servings of mostly fried noodles. The "Local Mushrooms" at $17 was very good and also quite small. The best dish we had was the "House Fried Rice" which is served in a soup bowl and enough for two people. Despite the fact that it is overpriced at $22 we would order it again. Eating outside was unpleasant due to traffic noise and exhaust fumes and I wouldn't book again if there was no indoor seating available. When we left an hour and fifteen minutes after arriving most of the indoor tables were still open... It seems their business model is to sell the outdoor seating first.

Underwhelmed

farm to table always a catch for me and on a recent Tuesday evening we went and checked it out. Not sure what it was about that night but the service, ambiance and food was off. It was not busy but the staff was buzzing around like flies. Outside patio at SXSW event which was distracting for us diners for sure. From Wanton soup to our double baked noodles everything was oily. My digestion was troubled for hours after. Must try-the steamed dumplings and dipping sauce. otherwise underwhelmed, I'm afraid. :(
