Best authentic Chinese in Portland

By Kris R |

Having lived in China for over 18 years, my family has been searching for an authentic Chinese restaurant since coming back to Portland. Seattle has several great restaurants and now we found one here in Portland. Xin Ding Dumpling House is the place to go if you want authentic Chinese food if you prefer Sichuan style food, which is more spicy, you can always ask the waiter staff for that style. The restaurant is ideally located downtown close to Max stops and the Saturday market. The portions are large enough to give you leftovers over the next few days. The staff are trained to know their menu well, the restaurant has views into the kitchen area which kids might enjoy watching how their food is cooked.

Really good and not in China town

Enjoy the lunch. Dim sum and an entree was so much food. Only issue was the service. It was like we were invisible. I’d recommend the food, just be patient and nothing planned afterwards.

Best Dumplings and Chinese around

Killer soup dumplings, chow fun and fried fish! Everything was served as cooked to perfection and fresh. The full flavors has made this my favorite place to eat, regardless of food type. The more es are more than reasonable too.

Good dumplings in Portland

Really good food, and it’s also a fun mixture of dim sum and sports bar vibes. Their beer selection on tap is pretty good. And considering how busy it was the service was quick!

Deep fried fish: Yes Please

Stopped here for the first time recently. My dating partner loves this place! We ordered the deep fried fish (at 1/2 the amount of spicy) as well as vegetarian pot stickers. The food was phenomenal! The fish was perfect. Crispy outside, moist center, fantastic flavor, the amount of heat at 1/2 was the only thing I would change. Next time… The pot stickers were also perfect! Great flavor again, moist, perfect amount of steam on the skin. The next day my pot stickers were still soft and I didn’t even put a wet paper towel around them to hold in the fridge. Prices were totally reasonable, and for the quality of food, I would have considered it underpriced. I can’t wait to go back, they have an extensive menu, lots of choices with my dietary needs. If d highly recommend trying this place out. What a perfect spot.

Such delicious dumplings!

Some dim sum/dumpling restaurants serve small plates of 3-4 dumplings from rolling carts, but Xin Ding takes a different approach. Orders include 9-10 dumplings, made fresh when ordered. We chose two (crystal shrimp dumplings and pork soup dumplings), and when we told our very friendly, helpful server Hana that we could eat more, she made the perfect suggestion (wonton in chili sauce). All three items were delicious. What a treat! We chose this restaurant for the dumplings, but the menu lists other Chinese dishes. Xin Ding is a short walk from the Chinatown MAX station. Check their website for hours: we were there on a Wednesday, and they close from 2:30 to 4:00. We suggest pairing lunch with a visit to the lovely Lan Su Chinese Garden, a few blocks away.

Worth the wait! Best dumplings at a great price

By NewPlaceFan |

We had to wait 20-30 minutes for a table, but it was worth it. We had 5 different types of dumplings/buns, chow mein, and wontons in broth. My favorite was the pork/shrimp/egg/black fungus dumplings. Others in our party really liked the soup dumplings. The lamb dumplings were odd - not as good as they sound; maybe lamb just isn't a good fit for dumplings. The chow mein was great, as were the wontons in broth. Including drinks and all that food, it was still one of the less expensive and most appreciated meals of our trip.

Great find near downtown Portland

Has the most soup in any soup dumpling i've ever had, including those in Shanghai, Din Tai Fung, and in San Gabriel Valley (California). Great! Also enjoyed the pea tips and beef noodle soup. Knowledgeable waitstaff and nice interior decor, conducive to a calm meal.
