Great Chinese American food

By Rodrigo M |

Wonderful non greasy Chinese food. I wouldn't recommend the slippery shrimp unless you're into sweeter type dishes. Beer and wine selection is extremely limited. No hard liquor served so bring a flask.

Skeptical...

By Yellowstone34 |

I'm not a fan of Chinatown at all but we were in the area while heading to a Dodger game. We decided to walk around and check out Yang Chow because it was highly rated here on TA. None of the restaurants in Chinatown look appealing from the outside but once we went inside Yang Chow it was fairly decent in décor and was clean. We didn't have reservations but were seated immediately. We decided to split the sweet and sour chicken and pork fried rice. Both were done perfectly and tasted amazing. Service was very attentive and friendly. However, while we were eating the restaurant filled up and we could tell the staff wanted us out as quickly as possible. Not really a complaint because I get it that they were busy, I was just trying to use google maps to find Angel City Brewery before we left lol!

Great Chinese in China Town

By curtis s |

Just north of downtown Los Angeles sits Chinatown. Yang Chow restaurant is so quick --so fast and so good I will be coming back here many many times! The service was excellent, the place was clean; obviously has many repeat customers, but if you're traveling and you want authentic Chinese, Yang Chow is the place to go. It is also good for the American Chinese food critic who doesn't want something so off the beaten path that you get afraid to eat it. Highly recommended!

Fantastic Chinese food

By Bobbie W |

I love Chinese food and haven't had it for a long time. This restaurant has me wanting more. The soups and dinners are all wonderful. This restaurant is in Korea town and a good place to have something to eat after walking and shopping. A fun place with great food.

Poor Service

By Scott Z |

Took my wife and family for dinner last night for my wife's birthday. We waited a bit long for our two appetizers and then NO food was brought to our table for 30 minutes, despite the fact that 3 tables around us that arrived after us were served their entire order. One table of two next to us, ordered, received their food, and paid their bill before our first entree was brought to us. When I asked a server why we hadn't been served, all that I received was a blank look. When I stopped the manager and asked why we had not been served despite the fact that others around us who arrived and ordered after us had been served, he was rude and dismissive, and essentially refused to answer my question. When I found the waiter who originally took the order and posed the same question, he apologized and said he put the order in late...I told him that I thought he just plain forgot, but he insisted that he placed the order late. He was very apologetic, but did nothing to make us happy. He did not offer to bring a courtesy entree no charge or offer to take one of the entrees off the bill. Basically NOBODY in the restaurant cared about their very poor service or whether their customer was happy or not. Their food is good, but not worth be treated with such discourtesy. I will never go back to Yang Chow.

Delicious - despite jet lag

By indianqueen39 |

It was our first night in LA after a long flight from the Uk. We were in china town enjoying the tail end of the Chinese New Year celebrations. We stumbbled across Yang Chow - the cue was long and I was reluctant to wait after such a long day. However I was out numbered - and I am so glad that we waited. The slippery prawns were definitely worth waiting for, as were the noodles and sweet sour chicken. The food was delicious and the service great . A fantastic first evening in Los Angeles.

Slippery Shrimp!!

By ECDoc |

COVID-19 has been hard on everyone... was so glad that Yang Chow was still open to order takeout when we were in LA! The slippery shrimp is absolutely delicious!! Easy to pick up and take home! We will be back again and again!! Anyone who is visiting or lives in LA - this an absolute must place to go!! I did not get to see William this time... hopefully next time!!

Fantastic Chinese at a great price

By Matt |

Good food and comes quick! Huge portions so bear that in mind. Parking around the back, staff friendly.

Yummy food in downtown LA

By Bobby B |

The food was very nicely made. Excellent food! Will go there again when I visit LA. Authentic Chinese food is not easy to find these days.

The Best in Chinese!

By DiAnneSpain |

Went here with my boyfriend who is LAPD and these guys are known for the places to go to eat. It was very clean and right in China Town. Highly recommend the Slippery Shrimp! Portion are generous and the food is outstanding!

Solid place

By Love2dine054 |

The food was very good. Big portions, good quality and served piping hot. The service is very good. This was a well run restaurant. Based on reviews we ordered the green beans with pork to start (was ok, not the best I have had). For entrees we had the slippery shrimp and the lamb with asparagus. The slippery shrimp was good but not really my type of food so just a mid-order their on my part. It was very sweet. The lamb was delicious and also had mushrooms in it. The bill was very reasonable for the amount of food and quality served. The restaurant is small and they could use a little work on their atmosphere (as most of Chinatown does). The lights were way too bright which should be a quick fix on their part.

wow - best chinese food i have had in a LONG time!

By arizona-mark |

my my - what a meal! hot & sour pork soup - EXCELLENT. slippery shrimp - EXCELLENT. three musketeers lo-mein - EXCELLENT. and the service is just incredible as well too. this is one excellent dining experience.

Best LA Chinese

By Thomas V |

You would not think this was the best by the outside. but the lines out the door and packed at 3pm made me optimistic. The place was packed but service was lighting fast (less than 5 min for all of our food) and it was VERY good. the cuts of meats are not the end gristley parts but chicken breast chunks and fresh vegetables. the crispy duck was a bit dry but overall, I was very impressed with the service and quality. I will go back for sure. Regarding the parking, you would never guess that the skinny little alley on the left goes back to a valet service. but there is one back there; just squeeze though.

So Good Chinese Food

By annminky |

I ordered beef fried rice and shrimp in lobster sauce and it did not fail my expectations. It was delicious as I can be picky when eating Chinese food. The one waiter was nice as he offered me water while I wait for my take-out food. Lots of people eating and it looks like they were enjoying their meal. I recommend this place.

Very good

By Tieres |

Mandarin & Szechwan cuisine in a traditional style. Good food and service and would definitely go back there.

Great spot for meal pre-Dodgers game

By Scalarnet |

We were headed to a Dodgers game and wanted a place to eat dinner and still be close to the ball park. Yang Chow in Chinatown fit that perfectly. We were able to find off street parking pretty easily and walk to the restaurant. Had a great Chinese offering and shared two mains between the three of us. Got in and out easily and then up to the stadium with no problems.

Best Chinese ever!

By Uwe J |

We were here quite by chance and saw the crowd in front of the restaurant. We put our names on the list and quickly got a table for two. The service is quick and friendly. The menu is very extensive and tasty. The food came quickly, slippery shrimp and spring rolls, beef with vegetables. We couldn't eat everything and got it in a box to take away, like almost all the guests here. Priced in line with LA. Highly recommended!

Extremely good Chiness Food

By canelo61 |

Exceptional Chinee Food, this was one of the best chinese restaurants that I have had in a long time next to my favorite in NYC.

Yang Chow...Wow!

By HappyTraveler0109 |

This is the best in L.A. Chinatown! First, a few tips...get there early for lunch which starts at 11:30 a.m. People start lining up by 11:15 and the place is nearly full by 11:45 a.m. Next, enjoy great staff of experienced, helpful, friendly waiters who all speak English and can assist with anything...including a fork if you're not proficient with chop sticks. There are several floor managers who can help you with menu choices or anything else you need. All the food is wonderful. My family enjoyed Mu Shu vegetables (has some pork in it) with plenty of sweet plum sauce. Next, we had shrimp fried rice which was very good. Finally, we enjoyed one of there signature dishes: Slippery Shrimp which is in a an orange glaze and slightly spicy. Wonderful, wonderful! I've been going for 20+ years and it is always a delight. This is place where for 30 years Chinatown tourists have been rubbing elbows with cops, lawyers and judges for the criminal courts downtown. You'll see a lot of badges come and go through the door. Woe unto any robber who tries to stick up the place! Go! Enjoy! Try many dishes...the more the merrier!

Great Chinese Food

By Bruce |

My wife and I both love Chinese food and we were in LA for a wedding the day before. I checked Trip Advisor for a good Chinese restaurant near our hotel in West Hollywood. The restaurant was less then a 10 minute walk so no LA traffic hassle. I had the combo fried rice which was the best I ever had. It was moist and flavorful. The portion was huge and I could not finish it. My wife had the chicken with walnuts which she also agreed was one of the best she has had. The restaurant is contemporary and clean. Surpringly not very crowded. If you are searching for really good Chinese food this is the place.

Don’t judge by the outside - food delicious

By CharlotteRodgers |

We ended up in Chinatown (which I’d not really suggest), and decided to sit down for dinner as we’d made the effort to go there. None of the restaurants look nice from the outside but the food in Yang Chow was delicious. Thoroughly enjoyed the lo mein, rice and chicken in black bean sauce. My partner actually branded it as one of the best Chinese meals he’s ever had. The fortune cookies at the end of the meal were also very yummy which is rare. Would definitely return to this restaurant.

Excellent

By Lara C |

We went to this restaurant because it was close to the hotel and we read that it was good on Trop Advisor. We were not disappointed!

Ohh Good Food

By Euggen |

This is a Chinatown icon with pictures of celebrities who have visited an all. Unlike the restaurants in Chinatown New York City, this one is more organized and very popular. The waiters are courteous and efficient. The juicy dumplings are dryish but have a good taste.

Nice Chinese Restaurant in LA

By Abrian N |

The food is nice, very tasty. Also big portion. We can't finish the food. Parking is a bit problem. The ambience is ok too.

Great food and fantastic service

By Sindre H |

The food was great and tasty. And the staff was very friendly. I would recommend visiting this place for a good dining experience.

good food value for money in LA

By PHunter17 |

Visited on a busy lunchtime, we were seated immediately plenty of room, after a short perusal of the menu we ordered slippery shrimp, special fried rice, chicken with noodles we ended up taking 2 boxes home it was great cold later. The service was friendly and efficient. Great value for money in LA chinatown. Well worth the trip but you do need to consider parking, we used valet parking.

Ate there after recommendations.

By Meryl F |

Our friend who is local recommended this restaurant and we were not disappointed. They're slippery shrimp was amazing and there are hot tea was just what I needed today. Established in 1977 they've been a local favorite for many celebrities and government workers in the area. We will definitely be back.

Chinese food at it’s finest

By jerry k |

Having driven by Yang Chow many times over many years and always seeing a crowd waiting outside we wondered why is this “China Town” restaurant always have a crowd. We finally was able to get in and found out first hand why. The finest Chinese food we have ever had bar none. Served quickly and hot..every dish you can imagine is on their great menu. The servers are attentive and if you need something it’s happens right now. You don’t have to ask twice. For a treat go there and be prepared to wait and be prepared to be delighted by the good

Iconic Chinese Food in LA Chinatown

By Kestrelwind |

Restaurant is iconic. Its history is on the walls with pictures of celebrities who have visited. Excellent service. Food was a little bland but can be seasoned to taste at the table. Fish portage was excellent. Slippery shrimp was well cooked (not overdone) and came out hot , crispy and slippery. Beef and broccoli was cooked to perfection. Wangs rice was good but a bit on the bland side. We spiced it up with chili oil and a little soy sauce.

American Cafe Chinese at it's best...

By Ferenc_Budapest |

We were in Los Angeles and the Princess thought she'd like to visit LA's ChinaTown. Off we went to the 'Yang Chow'. Completely unpretentious from the outside... once you're in, it's full on old time American Chinese Cafe... tablecloth's and cloth napkins, waiters in vests - very nice. Walls are covered with pics of the famous who've lunched within the comfy confines. Great menu - do try their 'Slippery Shrimp' - nice and tasty, good service, very good portions. The lady at the front was a little surly, which had my little Princess a bit put out, but... and I'm stealing and paraphrasing a line from the great Polanski film ... I looked at my precious and said - 'Forget it, Princess...It's Chinatown'.... ;)

Good Value

I have been visiting Yang Chow since 1984. The service is friendly and the food is good. Generous portions. Get's busy, so make reservations.

the best chinese food in los angeles

By sanjaya58 |

I saw great reviews for this restaurant and then i visited them to verify. it was jam pack full at around 21.00 pm.some people were also waiting outside in chilly winds. i decided to go for take out and eat it in my hotel room.i ordered only two dishes - fried rice and shrimps ( they named it swimmimg shrimps ). then i ate it after one hour and believe me this is the best chinese food i have eaten in a long time. the price was very good considering the portions.i think 3 persons can eat it in one go. simply superb quality and delicious.the shrimps are sweeter with sauces.the quality of the shrimps is very good.take it from me as i am exporting shrimps to USA since last 15 years !!! try it when in los angeles.much better than 5 star hotel chinese food. i wish i can someday eat in the restaurant, and taste some more dishes.

Best Chinese Food in Years

By Jorden N |

A local friend took us to this restaurant. As others have noted, the slippery shrimp is one of the most delicious things I have had at a Chinese restaurant! The Yang Chow lamb was also fabulous. And the three flavor sizzling rice soup delicious. Our waiter was a bit surely but the other service staff were excellent and the manager (?) came by twice to make sure we were happy. The next time I am in L.A. I would go out of my way to eat here again.

Spicy Schezwan wonton soup

By Stealthcritic |

We have been eating at Yang Chow for more than 20 years and The spicy Schezwan soup is a must have. I have never seen it on any other menu which is surprising, because this soup has the best flavor ever. Whenever we visit LA we always stop in For a meal.. They are also famous for the slippery shrimp.

Delicious Scallops But Mushy Spring Rolls

By HBSnowFlower |

After strolling around the mostly-closed shops and restaurants around the main gates of Chinatown, we headed down Broadway for lunch at the popular Yangchow restaurant on Broadway. We were surprised that the restaurant was so slow the second week of Chinese New Year, but were happy to be seated right away for lunch around noon. The waiters were very attentive. I asked for recommendations for appetizers and scallops dishes, and chose the fried spring rolls and garlic scallops. I would not recommend the spring rolls – the filling was tasteless mush -- but the silver-dollar-sized scallops were delicious, sautéed with lots of broccoli and water chestnuts (not indicated on the menu.) I noticed that the sizzling scallops dish another customer had ordered was all scallops for the same price which would have been a better deal. Our dishes came fast, water was filled and dishes were cleared quickly and more customers began to stream in. (Note: the single unisex bathroom needed a good cleaning.)

Best Chinese we have ever had

By Sue W |

We found this restaurant to have fantastic food, in huge portions (something which is dear to my husband's heart). It was so tasty and fresh, plus we had enough left over for dinner the following night. Would thoroughly recommend.

Nice Food, Pleasant Service

By Daytexas |

Traveling on business, I enjoyed the beef broccoli; tender, flavorful beef, nicely cooked broccoli (not overcooked, pleasantly crisp). Service was prompt and courteous. I walked from my nearby hotel but there appears to be a large off street parking lot behind the restaurant. Conveniently located in the Los Angles Chinatown neighborhood. Definitely worth a visit when your in LA.

Crispy Duck

By Excursion226270 |

The crispy duck was not edible, all bone with burnt skin. No taste, very dry and all for just $19.00 with no sides whatsoever. This restaurant is highly rated but I don’t see it, crowded and noisy. Thank you

Old school Chinese restaurant

By Aleks K |

You never know who you will meet while eating at Yang Chow. The walls are covered with photos of sport movie and political celebrities! I wandered into this china town spot on a Sunday late afternoon. It was already busy but gets packed at dinner! I sampled the shrimp in lobster sauce as well as curry chicken dishes which were large portions and delicious! Not quite the same as served in Chinatown in Montreal or Toronto which I am used to but very tasty!!

Long-time Favorite in Chinatown

By CaliTexan22 |

We've been eating here for 25 years. Always the spicy won ton soup, slippery shrimp and green beans in pork sauce. If we have children or others who don't want spicy, then we get an order of lemon chicken. Consistent quality; prompt service. Busy at times, so make a reservation if in doubt. If William is there, I enjoy a few minutes of chat about how the local sports teams are doing, in his view (Lakers in particular)

Not as good

By Kevin R |

Been here as often as twice a year or more. Was disappointed with the taste. Very bland which has been out of character for them. Special occasion place for the family who agreed across the board. Still good service. Hope this is not a downward trend!

Lovely people but mediocre food

By WendyS58 |

I looked at Yelp for a really good Chinese restaurant in Chinatown L.A. where I could meet a friend after a doctor appt. Yang Chow had the best reviews, and when I asked in the office, they all said, "Go to Yang Chow!" We ordered three dishes:the steamed pork dumplings, chicken and broccoli and mu shu vegetable. The mu shu came first, and I was surprised because they had already wrapped it up in pancakes. There was no plum sauce (my friend had to ask for it) which I was ok with. It was good, but not great, and very soy-saucy. The chicken had absolutely NO FLAVOR at all. I had to hunt around in my purse for salt, and even that did not help. We told the waiter and he was so nice--he asked if we would like to get a different plate. We said ok, and it was actually fine--it had flavor. What was up with cooking it the first way? Awful. Finally the dumplings came and they were bland. I was very disappointed because I expected Din Tai Fung quality. NO. Anyway, the waiters were great, but I will not eat here again. We were trying not to overload on carbs--maybe that was the problem. Maybe their noodle dishes are better. If not, it just goes to show that people have no taste.

Awesome egg flower soup

By Isaac L |

Excellent Chinese menu with traditional and."American" chinese dishes. Great preparation and.packing to take back to the hotel for my teams dinner - would recommend anytime.

Terrific Chinese choices

By Robert G |

We hadn't visit this place for quite a while, since they closed their Woodland Hills location. Off-street parking is available by the restaurant, through a narrow alley off of Broadway. We were seated and given menus right away. Hot tea and glasses of water were quickly served to us. We ordered the sweet cabbage to nibble on as we made our selections - hot & sour soup, mongolian lamb, slippery chicken, shrimp in bean suace along with brown rice. All was delicious, served hot straight from the kitchen, with plenty of food remaining to take home. This is our #1 stop when visiting the area and we'll be back again soon.

Fantastic chinese food, need a bit more friendly service

By f_jolles |

Fantastic chinese dishes in this restaurant located in the heart of LA Chinatown. Famous slippery shrimps are great, mongolian beef is very tasty and tender. The rooms are bit old fashion with plenty of pictures of famous visitors on the walls. Hostesses could be a bit more friendly and waiters also, they all seem stressed to make the tables turn with as many customers as possible. Reservation highly recommended for dinner on weekends, even with a reservation, expect some wait. Convenient valet parking just behind the restaurant.

Not rated

Came here because the reviews but its not all that. Our order was wrong and its a very pricey place to eat. Not reccommended staff tend to cone across rude.

Chinatown dining choice

By skm4444 |

Saw reviews on Eater of top Asian restaurants. We’re staying near DTLA so there were only 2 rather close by. Chose this one since we like Szechuan. Surprised to find ourselves in Chinatown. Very friendly hostess who seated us promptly on Sat. for lunch. Brought some Chow Mein noodles with hot oil and sweet sour sauces to start. We had pork pot stickers, Szechuan beef and veggie fried rice. The beef had large mushrooms in it. All were very tasty renditions. Good choice.

Worst meal in LA

By stephanie l |

Im Chinese and grew up eating Chinese food. This place is probably the worst I've had in a long time. Ordered 2 dishes and a hot and sour soup. Everything taste the same. Overly salty and starchy with the same brown base. I felt sick after I finished my meal. The worst meal I've had in LA.

JUST OK...

By lovethemouse-7 |

Do not understand all the great reviews for this restaurant. perhaps the food quality varies greatly depending on the time of day and items ordered. We tried the raved about slippery shrimp. nothing special. It was like soggy (small) tempura shrimp in orange sauce. the vegetables in the pork dish we ordered were overly cooked and slightly mushy. server was slightly rude...he was handling a lot of tables so perhaps they were understaffed. Meal not completely inedible,( rice was fine), just not good. There must be other restaurants in this area that provide tastier food and a better experience.

Excellent Chinese Food

By Charlie M |

I know it should not be hard to recommend a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown, but Yang Chow is excellent. A friend turned us on to this restaurant and now I go with my family every time we are in LA. If you like good Chinese food, go here. You will not be disappointed.

Best Chinese food in Los Angeles!

By Olivia F |

This is my second visit to Yang Chow. I have a passion for Chinese food and have been to many Chinese restaurants around Los Angeles. Yang Chow is hands down the best! It's a truly an authentic Chinese restaurant, it's located in the heart of Chinatown with many nearby DTLA attractions. The consistency in their service and food is perfect and the food is exceptional. The dishes served here are traditional Chinese dishes but elevated to a new level of flavor that I find addicting. Once you come you'll want to return!

Best Chinese food

By Jil K |

Felt very authentic. A fun stop while in Chinatown. . Chicken lo mein and Kung Pao beef were terrific. Best Chinese food I’ve had. Would never have gone in by the looks from the outside, but relied on reviews on TripAdvisor to try it and glad we did. wait staff was super attentive. It has a busy and visible kitchen which added to the experience for us. Highly recommend it.

GREAT BUT PRICEY

By Bob P |

Well above average food, but pricey (will explain later), I had the shredded beef with carrots in brown sauce. Food was served hot right off the stove. The brown sauce was great and not overly salty which can be in many Chinese restaurants. My wife had shrimp with brocolli in white sauce. Plenty of shrimp and a small farm of brocolli. Her nephew had chicken with brocolli in brown sauce which was also great. We all shared pork fried rice and spring rolls (no egg rolls on the menu, which is rare). Appetizers, soup, entree and rice are all al a carte which leads to the pricey discussion. There are no combination plates offered here which helps reduce the price in most Chinese restaurants. Dinner for three without soup was $100. We live on Long Island, NY (which is not inexpensive) and this dinner with soup would run about $75. Portions were generous, same as at home. Can't give a five because of price. If I lived here I would definitely return, just not as often if prices were a bit lower.

Great food

By KSTravel13 |

The food was excellent! We had 5 people and split 3 entrees and 2 appetizers and still had leftovers. The slippery shrimp were fantastic and we highly recommend eating here!

Not Great

By Stephen K |

Located at the edge of Chinatown, this area is rough. The restaurant is a throwback to the 60’s. Decor is plain and simple. More importantly, the food was only average. There is no subtly of flavor. The won ton soup (for which they are lauded) was watery; the dumplings were small. On the plus side, there was shrimp and sea weed. The cold noodles were stiff, making them difficult to eat, and under flavored. The lamb with scallions had far too much soy sauce to be enjoyable. The portion size was good. The price was good. I would not go back.

Delicious!

By Brooke Brown |

I had to try this highly recommended staple of Chinatown, and it didn't disappoint. The slippery shrimp was delicious. It's a little pricey, but great quality. The service is fast, efficient, and accommodating.

Great, Authentic Chinese

By Traveler1959-123 |

The Trip Advisor reviews brought us here, and they weren't wrong. This was great Chinese food, and we tried a variety of dishes in our group. Started with the corn soup, which was ordered for two but was more than enough for the three of us. Then went with the slippery shrimp (a highly acclaimed local favorite) and the chicken with vegetables. Great flavor and very ample quantity.

The Very Best!

By Nupester |

This may be my favorite Chinese restaurant in America or darn close. I always eat here when I visit L.A., every dish is topnotch with tender meat and excellent sauces. It isn’t a hardcore dim sum type of place, but authentic as far as rice dishes go. I strongly recommend for Chinese food enthusiasts!

2 Words! Slippery Shrimp!

By Burgundy9 |

Almost everything we've ever had at Yang Chow's from Pork Fried Rice to Moo Shu Pork. Service always excellent in a typical Asian Restaurant setting. Located in "China Town" off the beaten track. A little hard to find with a small parking lot in the rear that's attended for peak hours. Don't be afraid to order it's all really special!

Disappointment

By Zeituni |

We have heard many praises about this place, and being close ordered seats. We were told, that we have to wait two hours. Well, when on application was written "10 minutes" we came - and waited 40 minutes more. They somehow have missed our appointment. Well, at last we got seats and ordered meals. Wonton soup had an unpleasant smell and pieces of intestines. The "three ingredients tastes" consisted of very small ingredients and mainly rise. But slippery shrimps were really good. As a frequent visitor to China, I must confess, that this restaurant is very far from the high standard China cooking in every way.

Great tasting

By RJR |

The food was good and served fast and hot. Everything is ala carte though. We were at quickly and for it good equally as fast.

Excellent family meal

By Ray N |

We have been going to Yang Chow’s for years. The food and the service continue to be outstanding! A must stop when visiting Chinatown or DTLA.

Super food and service

By Bryce K |

I had the 3 taste entree with big tender tasty scallops shrimp and beef. She had cashew chicken with Chicken fried rice. All were super. 4 people service. Zagat awards on the wall. Constant stream of people coming in. Nothing but good here. $25 per person. Left a good tip and we will return.

Brilliant

By Masked-Caper |

The best Chinese food in LA. No dim sums but great food. Try the slippery shrimp, the best. Decent service and quick. Quite a famous place among locals and celebrities. Must try

Disappointed

By Fritz1956 |

We have been there because of the good recommendations and have been disappointed. The lunch menus did not taste very well and the soup tasted like water.

Great food

By arnela6 |

One of the famous restaurants in chinatown, LA. Recommended by locals, we have enjoyed the food - fresh, tasty, large portions. Visited by many celebs/stars- lots of pictures on the walls. Great value for money.

Good food but don't expect too much

By Ana |

We were here twice. The portions are really big and the food is good. We had one of their specialties, with three types of meat (chicken, beef and shrimp), it was prepared with cashew and was very tasty. Noodle was just ok - nothing special. What we didn't like - the staff at the reception desk isn't very welcoming - no smile or even "hello" when you enter. Sometimes they seemed not to pay any attention to the new guests. Also it can take 15-20 minutes waiting in the evening.

Phenomenal, quality Chinese food

By Sven |

I got the Mongolian Beef, and it was fantastic. Good texture, not over-sauced like a lot of Mongolian Beef tends to be. The sauce that came with the egg rolls was also very unique and addictive. This is also a side dish I recommend. You really can't go wrong with this place. It's a local staple for a reason. Cheers.

Way to Salty enough yo cause High Blood pressure to rise :(

By Susie |

Great service ! Everything we ordered was very salty. spicy Wonton soup very salty no meat in wonton that I’m used to Way too salty & I love salt. I used to love Chinese food Unfortunately did not enjoy it this time. Will not have it fir a long time .

Great food and lots of it.

By sandylh2017 |

Loved the atmosphere..service was excellent. Presentation of food great. Enjoyed the experience..first time there.

Amazing Scallops

By Sawdogs |

I ordered the Scallops with Hot Garlic Sauce. I would rate it a 9.9 out of 10. The heat level was 3 out of 10 (thus the -0.1 pt on rating). So if you like it hotter, ask them to spice it up! Amazing...I have never had scallops perfectly cooked in a Wok. They did it. For $18.75, there was plenty of scallops for two if you ordered a soup and side or noddle. I also tried their pork green bean. It was also very good, but nothing out of the ordinary (8 out of 10) Service was exceptional, tea was perfect, and I don't know how they get their steamed rice so hot....it was hot when I personally ate all of the scallops.....Again AWESOME!

Authentic flavors, excellent service, and clean modern vibe!

By Riley Wang |

I had an amazing experience dining here! The flavors were bold and authentic — every dish felt like it came straight from the heart of Asia. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made sure everything was perfect throughout the meal. From the beautifully plated appetizers to the flavorful mains (especially the [insert dish, e.g., spicy beef noodles or xiao long bao]), everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. The interior is sleek, clean, and welcoming — a great place for both casual meals and special occasions. I’ve eaten at many Asian restaurants across the U.S., and this one truly stands out. I’ll definitely be coming back!

High quality Chinese cuisine

By Henry F |

A high level Chinese restaurant. The Sichaun dishes are reasonably spicy and everything is properly prepared. The cold noodles in sesame sauce are al dente and in a well balanced spicy sesame sauce. The spicy shredded beef was particularly good with crispy slices of beef and sufficient chili peppers. The slippery shrimp was lightly spiced, delicately coated, and delicious.

Wonderful Chinese Meal

By Rocketee |

Having researched restaurants close to our hotel, Yang Chow came up as highly recommended. House specialties are the way to go. We started with steamed pork dumplings....the 20 minute wait was totally worth it.....presentation beautiful, soy sauce with ginger a great accompaniment. Three ingredient (scallops, prawns and beef) with snow peas a great choice. Highly recommended.

Terrible tasting food

By travelgirl282 |

I am giving one star just because the service was acceptable. The food was NOT. The "spicy Szeshuan Wonton" was just wonton wrapping in brown colored soup, totally not what the Chinese famous dish should be. The other two dishes (one pork and one lamp) were both cooked with similar looking brown sauce. The quality and taste was at best fast-food/take-out level.

Good Chinese food for Lunch.

Shanghai Style? Szechuan? I order the dishes I remember from my youth when all Chinese Restaurants in Los Angeles were Cantonese. Beef with Snow Peas, Chicken Cashew, etc. Anyway, the food here is great, and at reasonable prices. They have 3 locations, however, I've only eaten at the Chinatown location.

Afternoon Adventure

By AJSjasmine |

Spent the afternoon in Chinatown and decided to give Yang Chow a try. The service was fast and the food was very good. Visited the restroom and it was very clean. Had the shrimp with lobster sauce lunch special which is served with fried rice, egg drop soup and 2 wontons. Also had the Szechuan chicken with steamed rice, the vegetables were fresh and the sauce was sweet. I would've liked a little more spice but overall it was very good. For dessert had the lichee, it was fragrant and surprisingly refreshing. The bill came to 50.00 with the tip but well worth it! I will definitely come back.

WOW!

By Randy S |

Chinese cuisine is one of our favorites, and I thought that I had eaten really good food. But, I had only good eaten Chinese food, this is really good Chinese food We ate garlic chicken, soup with dumplings, bock choy, some type of cold iceberg lettuce salad and fried rice. We also had some type of 'orange' shrimp that was the absolute bomb. Don't miss it.

Yang Chow - don't forget your $$$$

By fredyt3 |

Yang Chow is very popular and in the heart of Chinatown. The food is very fresh. For me the issue is the prices as during our visit it was for dinner. Most of the entrees are $15 - $20+. So by the time you cobble a couple of dishes to balance your meal you are looking at $50, maybe up to $100!!!!! They do offer a special for about $28 which includes soup, 1 spring roll and 2 appetizers but even with that you at $60. Again, you get what you pay for but there are many of chinese restaurants in Los Angeles where you can get a quality meal without what in my opinion is an excessive cost.

Simply the Best

By Tasazi H |

I was in need of some really good chinese food. The area i live we don't have good chinese food to choose from. Go to this plave quickly this is as good as San Fransico chinatown. We asked the table next to us if they had been here before and they were regulars. They recommended the Slippery chicken it was so tastey and the portiion was big. I had not this ever before and was taken back at how wonderful the dish was, so happy we ordered it. We also had sweet and sour chicken, pork chow mein, and pork fried rice. It was a fantastic lunch and service was very attentive. This was place was put on my go back list.

Chinatown location

Very good meal...inside nicer than the outside might make you think it would be. Recommended by hotel...a few touristy shops in the same block.

Perfect!

The waiters are very nice, the waiting time is low, the food is very delicious huge portions, Everything was excellent! We recommend it for everyone who want to try awesome Chinese food! We will return!

Not to our tastes

By TB_Rays_fan_NJ |

Courteous prompt service. The spring rolls were crispy and tasty. We had the beef lo mein, and did not care for the taste of the meat.

Chinatown food

By jim b |

We have been visiting in chow for probably 30 years now. They have a few signature dishes which are the slippery shrimp, crispy beef and green beans. It's hard for us to venture out and try some of the other dishes yet we always seem to try. We are big soup dumpling fans also and when we tried them this last visit we were greatly disappointed. But that's OK because there is so many other wonderful dishes to have. The slippery shrimp or a orange paste sauce and are crispy delicious. The beef also is crispy and very very tender and is not at all any heat in spice. The string beans are crisp and fresh and done with a pork and a tasty low low salt sauce. This is in our top three choices of Chinese food restaurants in the city. If you enjoy good fresh Chinese food and you want to hang around Chinatown then I highly recommend it. One thing I find interesting is that is really more of a Caucasian patron restaurant. The real Chinatown to me is in Monterey Park. Try it you won't be disappointed (I hope). I try to upload my pictures and was unable to, sorry.

Mediocre Chinese Food

By Pedro B |

Mediocre Chinese Food, Overpriced and not worth the try. Hong Kong BBQ one block south was better in my humble opinion. Food was bland and lacked flavor.

Great service, great food, great fun

By cdank16 |

Picked off TA. Quick Lyft from downtown. Busy when we got there - found a good bar across the road one block north. They use a Yelp pager which is useful. We ordered way too much so the staff helpfully suggested we lose a main or two. Giant portions of really tasty foot - the slippery shrimp was really good, as was the special fried rice. We messed up and ordered the wrong middle dish for us - crispy with gravy. Not tasty enough. I think we spoke to 5 or 6 of the Yang Chow team while we were there, maybe even the owner. Great bunch, happy to chat, we had good fun here.

Some choices better than others

By civilgrad |

We had the the spring rolls, Szechuan Chicken, and the slippery shrimp. The spring rolls were good (4 out of 5), the Szechuan Chicken was not good (tiny crispy pieces that were hard and not very flavorful, 1 out of 5), and the slippery shrimp was good (4 out 5). The food was a bit overpriced for the quality. But they do give you large portions.

Very good food

By Max Z |

Hi there I visited with my wife. Although it was around lunch time they have served us very fast. Food was very good in very large portions. Highly recommend!

Always great

Good food. Great staff! You must eat here if you love Chinese food. Get the slippery shrimp and yang chow fried rice.

Authentic & very tasty

This is a traditional Chinese restaurant offering a great range of choice , with very good service it is very good value for money.

Not sure who’s writing the previous reviews

By MissMareeka |

Food wasn’t great very expensive we had 4 dishes came to $60 including tax, big portions but mostly went to waste as we didn’t enjoy the food. Really salty and greasy. Place is also very run down and could do with a refurbishment. Probably the worst Chinese food I’ve ever had. Staff seemed friendly but we didn’t stay long we ate a bit of food then left after paying the bill. Would avoid China town in LA all together personally! Best bit was the sweet and sour chicken. Soft noodles we not nice, egg fried rice kinda salty. Prawn toast was tasteless and prawns tasted a little raw.

Great Chinese food

By Ruentes |

I was touring downtown LA when I was craving for some serious Chinese chow down. I was going to another place but local friend told me to hit this joint. Great selection of Chinese food and it was outstanding. Service was alright, but it was really busy though which was alright. Overall great place to have some nice delicious Chinese food.

Great Chinese in LA Chinatown

By Jennifer S |

We came to Yang Chow looking for great Chinese food and this place delivers with great flavors AND great service, starting with complimentary (and delicious!) hot tea after being seated. We started with the fried shrimp appetizer and the sizzling soup. We had the Yang Chow Lamb and the Slippery Shrimp entrees, both specialty dinners. The fried shrimp was plentiful and delicious, but of the items we ordered, the most basic--just deep-fried shrimp served with sweet and sour sauce. The sizzling soup was delicious and served with crispy rice on top. Unique and recommended. The Yang Chow Lamb is rich and bright, served in a flavorful brown sauce and accompanied by portobello mushroom and asparagus. The Slippery Shrimp is lightly fried and coated in a spicy sweet caramelization that is not overbearing. Neither are dishes I have had elsewhere, and both are highly recommended. I cannot say enough good things about our meal here. Come and try it and taste for yourself!

Small space

By JustAretha |

A really small restaurant. Not too much elbow room, pull your hair out and you will basically block the walk way. Food was OKAY! My friends and I ordered a bunch of stuff & we just divided everything. Parking is not too bad in that area. Five bucks to park which is pretty cheap compared to other places.

Surprising place in the middle of chinatown

By siminb |

The food is real good, the restaurant is very clean.Plates are very big, it is always better to share everything..try shrimps for sure!!

Really good food in Chinatown

By EPH |

A friend suggested we have our business dinner at Yang Chow. Great spot. And judging by the photos on the walls, lots of famous Angelenos feel the same. Have the Slippery Shrimp.

Delicious slippery shrimp!

By Emma B |

We went to have dinner at Yang Chow after reading reviews on TripAdvisor. The restaurant is quite small with a cosy touch. We didn't have a reservation but we got a table straight away. We decided to try their slippery shrimp, house chicken special and the pork dumplings- everything was delicious! Big portions, they let us take home the food we couldn't finish:) You can even bring your own wine to have with your dinner, for a small corkage fee. This restaurant is a must if you are close to Chinatown!

Food is superior; atmosphere cramped and noisy

By chumbud |

You have to wait to get in here as they do not take reservations. The place is small and cramped but the food makes it all worthwhile. Delicious Chinese (Hunan?) food served in generous portions is their thing. It is worth the wait to get in. Kinda noisy.

Rude hostest and cashier

By RonH43026 |

Having had a meal at a neighboring restaurant the night before we thought we would give Yang Chow a shot. Upon arrival having walked from our nearby hotel, we found an extremely long line out the door waiting to get in. Being a nice evening we decided to wait which turned out to be approximately 45 minutes. Unlike the night before at Hop Woo's where all the customers were Chinese, here the vast majority of customers at Yang Chow were Americans and other international folks. While I understand being busy, the hostess was less than welcoming to any of the customers. The place was packed wall to wall with very little room between tables. To be honest it was so crowded that I was a little uncomfortable that there were so many packed into such a small space. The wait service once seated was very good and the food also very good, although I received my meal about 5 minutes before my wife received hers. The food portions were quite good. My primary complaint here was when we paid by credit card (taken to the cashier by the waiter) the cashier returned my credit card and receipt by rudely throwing it on the table and walking away without even a thank you. If I based my review on her, the place would have had only 1 star at best.

Slippery shrimp is always a go to, green beans with minced pork is so good. The wait staff was attentive & on point even though it was a bit busy.

Best Chinese Food

By randk77 |

Our friends told us about this place. So we beat the crowd on New Years by being there at 11.30 AM for lunch. Had the slippery shrimp (ask for not much spice) it was delicious. The beef and broccoli was excellent as well as the fried rice. Loved the spring rolls. Very reasonable prices. This place is on our top places to visit next time we are in LA.

Awesome Chinese Food!

By Alan V |

Best Chinese Food! Highly reommend the "slippery shrimp", "3 ingredient Kung pao" and "3 ingredient with snow peas".

Superb Chinese

By Masked-Caper |

Probably one of the best Chinese restaurant in downtown LA. Service is very fast and the food is superb. Slippery shrimp and Eggplant minced chicken at superb.

Diamond in the rough

By fulltimeholidayer |

Chinatown in LA at night is not an area I felt particularly comfortable with which I guessed from the surprised reaction from our Uber driver en route there. Having said that we were fine. Yang Chow is nothing to write home about from the outside, these are sometimes the best places and definitely so in this case. Excellent service and food, I would return.

Fun & Delicious & Bribery Free

By foodaspoetry |

Used to go to Chinese Restaurants in Los Angeles' Chinatown every time I had lunch with a Superior Court or Federal Judge--they chose and we were treated very very well. This was YEARS ago, when women were a novelty as civil litigators and bored judges liked a quick lunch with a perky chatterbox---their treat. Seems that was ruled unethical long ago/as were such lunches. Today it was a family of five affair, with relatively well behaved kids and classic basic foods to please the child pallet. But Beef/Broccoli Sauce and Chow Main with Spicey Green Beans was just the trick and everything was terrific. If only we hadn't looked at the photographs on the wall. No Judges. . . BUT. . .all the USC athletes and boosters. . .given the cost of a USC Education and the extra money to get rich kids accepted, you may not be able to afford to eat at Yang Chow. . . But bribery aside, and no USC game going on, I'll return to sample more dishes. Wearing blue an gold as a Bruin!

Amazing dumplings

By Mrs_Slip |

The steamed pork dumplings were some of the best I’ve ever had. The pork fried rice was also outstanding - flavorful, light and airy. This is a great place to stop if you are looking for a spot in China Town.

Quite good Chinese in LA's Chinatown

By hayes_jd |

We went on a Saturday night around 7 pm. I called in advance, asking if two showed up, would there be a wait. They said no. They did not ask if we wanted reservations, because it turns out they accept them. When we arrived, it was full, though we only waited 10 minutes. They like to move people through so service is quick. The slippery shrimp is quite good, not spicy, more like "crispy and tangy shrimp." My spouse had a tofu dish, which was okay, if you like tofu. Everything is a la cart. Most dishes are priced between $15-20. With drinks and tip, it will be $30-40 per person; $25 if you drink water.

The Best Slippery Shrimp!!

By Joan York |

Yang Chow is one of my top two favorite Chinese restaurants. The slippery shrimp is always the got to for our group as it is alway fabulous. My other favorites that they do the best are the pork fried green beans and the MooShoo Chicken. They do a great job on their plum sauce which is what elevates their MooShoo.

"A L.A. Chinatown Hideaway!"

By 2MARY9 |

I finally had the chance to get down to Yang Chow this week despite the rain. The trip did not disappoint and it was well worth the travel. As soon as I walked in, I was immediately escorted to my table. Once I ordered, my food arrived within 10 minutes. I didn't even have to put any more money in my parking meter out on Broadway. It was a delicious meal and it filled me up quick. The place was packed...even after the lunch time crowd. Hope this helps. If you blink, you will drive right past this place. That's why I attached a photo of the front of the location. Hope this helps. See you there.

Great food

By Sarah W |

We went here as a family of 7 on the recommendation of the hotel staff. From the outside you can’t even tell it’s really a restaurant as the windows are tinted . We were seated quickly and the staff were really friendly. The food was really good and portions were huge. Lots of photos on the walls of all the celebs that had eaten there entertained our teenagers !

Happy Lunar New Year!

By julia f |

We visited Yang Chow last year on Valentine's Day and the place was mobbed, but the food and service were wonderful. This year we had a similar experience because we were there during the Lunar New Year celebrations. I highly recommend the slippery shrimp and green beans or asparagus with minced pork. Our group of six shared a large bowl of sizzling rice soup, which was excellent. And to top it all off, the parade came right into the restaurant!

Very good

By WineAndDineTurkey |

My first taste of Chinese food in LA. It's very good and I am a fan of Szechuan food. They do it right here and they have the 'three musketeers lo mien' which is pretty incredible. I'm not a chef but I do like and know food and this place rocks.

decide wise what you order

By Mike |

We found this restaurant with a good recommendation and took our meal at 2:30pm there. We went in and instantly got a table. The waiter brought water and tee, which is free of charge. We ordered our food and got it quick. The „sweet and sour chicken“ was good, but the „crispy duck“ was really dry and tasted not good. I couldn’t recommend this meal, as I had problems with my stomach the rest of the day. All in all, it was an average experience

Disappointing service

By LivetheLove |

After a successful afternoon event my 3 friends and i decided to go to Yang Chow. There were people waiting outside and when we went in we were told there was a 20-25min wait. I knew the food was worth the wait so we agreed to wait and i signed up for the wait list. The electronic wait system would alert us when our table was ready. We walked around china town and came back after 25 mins only yo be told it would be another 25-30 mins. That reservations had priority. If we were told that from the beginning we could have gone elsewhere. One of my friends was upset as she was having low blood sugar and needed to eat. She raised her voice and told them this was unacceptable. They found us a table in 10 mins. We ordered and told the waiter our friend needed her meal out first due to her dietary needs. Out of everything we ordered, her meal was the last one out of the kitchen The food was good but the circumstances tainted the enjoyment of the meal. Very disappointing experience. Make a reservation days ahead if you want to eat here.

Best in LA hands down

By Ben S |

Been a fixture on Broadway in LA forever, in fact, I can still remember Micheal, with a full head of black hair running around the restaurant serving as many as he could and great with the kids in teaching them to use chopsticks. He may be retired but never forgotten. His nephew has some mighty big shoes to fill and my recent trip back to LA in years, proved that he's doing a helluva job filling them. Thanks for the memories. Stay Healthy, Happy and prosperous Micheal. Ben

Best Chinese food

We were staying in a hotel in Chinatown so we decided to take a walk. We came across this restaurant on a Sunday. It had a few people waiting so we decided to stay. I am so glad we picked this place. It was so good. The tea, soup, chicken chow mein and rice delicious. They give very large helpings. I absolutely recommend this place if you want Chinese Food.

Good Chinese Food in Chinatown

By Dani D |

One of the most remarkable things about LA’s wonderful Chinatown neighborhood is the dearth of good Chinese restaurants. I’ve been to a number of them. Most of them I’ve walked out afterwards without taking home the leftovers. Then, there’s Yang Chow. This place is really good. As someone who lives near Chinatown it’s my go-to for Chinese food. I recommend the Szechuan Chicken, Slippery Shrimp, and green beans with pork, but there’s lots of goodness all over the extensive menu. It’s as delicious as take out as it is eating in. So get your chopsticks ready!

Great!

By CaliTravel |

Absolutely amazing! Very fast service and the best Chinese food! Portions are very generous and we always end up sharing everything!!

Should be rated #1

By Rick G |

We found this restaurant on Trip Advisor rated as #2 Chinese food in L is Angeles. Should be #1. We had the Slippery Shrimp, Kung Pao combination, Green Beans and Combination Fried Rice. Food was great, no wait to get a table, servers were excellent and the food came out in a very short time. Definitely recommend.

Yummy take away

By Family4Perth |

Recently arrived in LA and staying nearby; couldn't really be bothered going out so opted for take away. Had the fried rice, spicy pork and mixed vegetables. Was all delicious and when they realised we were staying in a Hotel near by they gave us some paper plates, etc. Quick and good service and yummy food.

Family Birthday

By John M |

Made a reservation for 21 for my wifes 60th birthday. Everything was ready on time, they allowed separate checks for each family group and presented the cake along with singing "Happy Birthday" for no extra charge. Service was excellent with needs being made when required but with no hovering of servers around your elbow. Polite, professional and effecient and truley friendly were all of the staff. Now for the food: some of the besr chinese food we have ever had. Every single dish we got was better than the dish before it. And with 21 people eating like it was their last .meal, especially one of my son-in-laws, there was plenty to take home. Great place! I highly recommend it. But if you are looking for private booths and candle light, stay home. This place is for fun and for those that like to eat and light to ear great food.

Foodie China Town Heaven, Best Restaurant

Whether you are an LA resident, or visiting, Yang Chow is one of the two best Chinese restaurants in China Town. Go, you will love it.

Best Chinese food ever!

By TropicalThompsons |

Wowza, this really is Chinese food at its finest. All the staples you would expect, but BETTER! Some of the best chicken fried rice I've had, pan fried noodles, and kung pao trio were some of our faves! Would definitely recommend.

First stop in Chinatown LA that doesn't disappoint

By vinamelody |

I didn't know where to start but since we arrived around dinner time, this is our first stop in LA's Chinatown. As everyone suggested , the slippery shrimp is good but too sweet and less spicy to my taste. The pan fried noodle however.. I think I ordered wrongly as I thought it's a plain fried noodle. Yang Chow fried rice is good. I like their spicy wonton soup but again, it's sweet and not spicy at all to Asian haha Overall it's quite good.

Chinatown lunch

By saminkc |

You'd never know it by looking by the outside of the restaurant but this place is very popular and the food was REALLY good. It was part of our package for the Rose Parade Tour. Man, they kept bringing food and bringing food. It was all very good and hot from being freshly cooked. Everything was so tasty. 5 stars

Pretty good...

By Reco M |

Awesome service and the food was great! I wish their fried rice tasted a little more fried but the meat was amazing the the “slippery shrimp” OMMMGGGGGG! Definitely recommend!

A Disappointment

By Susitaa |

We have been dining at Yang Chow Woodland Hills and Broadway for many years. Their food doesn't warrant their raised prices. The quality was also a disappointment. The Kung Pao chicken was not eatable. It was swimming in oil or some kind of fat. We brought it to the management's attention. He explained, not to our satisfaction, that there were four cooks in the kitchen. Some cooks use more fat. This answer made no sense to us. We didn't eat the food, and were was not offered any compensation. They use canned mushrooms and spongy chicken in the wonton soup.

Slippery Shrimp to Die For

By hakccmd |

Having been a patron for over 30 years, the consistency unique combination of taste, spice and consistency of slippy shrimp remains extraordinary. Virtually every customer has a plate on their table and folks make pilgrimages to experience this dish.

One of the best restaurants in the city! The food is delicious, the service is amazing. I highly recommend.

Excellent Food

By Randy O |

We arrived hungry about 3 pm and they filled us up. Started off with the Wonton Soup for 2 most excellent. Then had the fried dumplings, most likely not order that again. Spice pork and we split that it was quiet good. Hot tea.

Busy place but excellent chinese food

By Ricardo F |

Went at 11:00am which is when they open. A long line already. Seating was tight but the food made up for everything. Also, the orders were brought one at a time like courses, not what we had planned but it worked well.

A Chinatown Icon, 40+ Years in the Making. Solid.

By r a |

Easy to drive right by this place, but don't. Small storefront, parking in the back with narrow alley entrance next to restaurant. We were seated immediately, quick and friendly service. Large menu, with options for very traditional or more "Americanized" versions. Slippery Shrimp quite good, as was House Chicken. Won Ton soup is more hearty and filled with shrimp, chicken, won ton, more than most I've eaten. Lots of food options worth exploring. Success over many years suggests this place is solid and consistent no matter what menu item you would choose.

Not so good

By Soakaroo |

We ordered hot and sour soup, sauteed spinach and fried pork chops. The pork chop wasnt really a porkchop. It was chopped up bones and their spinach was discolored which i'm guessing is old and bad to the point of slimy. Hot and sour soup was okay. The rice was also cold and was not traditional jasmine rice usually served at chinese restaurants. This is more like overpriced mediocre chinese take out. I don't recommend it.

good food, quick service.

By Carolyn Burgess |

We saw this place in Los Angles and wanted to taste Asian food. We weren't disappointed. Good food, great tea, quick service.

Worthy of its top rating

By Stan K |

Gret menu variety, excellent food, large portions, and wonderful service. There were five of us, and we all ordered something different, which they put on a round lazy susan so that we could all try each other's dishes. From squid to beef to pork and shrimp, everything was amazingly good. We couldn't possibly finish everything, and so we will be eating fabulous leftovers for a few days. A restaurant not to be missed when you want top Chinese cuisine.

Wow!! Slippery Shrimp!

By 508marissar |

The Slippery Shrimp was soooo good my husband can't stop talking about it! I also got the slippery chicken and it was amazing too. It's an original recipe of breaded shrimp or chicken with a sweet and tangy sauce on it. I would say the consistency is somewhat like sesame chicken. It says on the menu that it's spicy, but it really wasn't too spicy. All of the locals go there for the Slippery Shrimp! This place was situated in Chinatown with a $5 parking lot very close by. We went on a weeknight at 8:30 and didn't have to wait, but the place was packed. The portions are huge, so if you can share definitely do and make sure you go while you're really hungry!! My husband ate about half of his and I ate about 1/4 of mine. The steamed white rice was $1 per bowl. If we had realized that we would have gotten more rice! They also give you a complimentary hot tea when you first sit down at your table... It's a nice touch!

Had dinner on a Friday evening after searching for a good Chinese restaurant that was located in Chinatown All search results consistently had Yang Chow at the top Started with Spicy Szechuan wonton soup (outta this world). Slippery Shrimp and Kung Pao chicken Portions are huge Food was over the top!

Delicious food, great service, good prices

By Melissa P |

So we arrive to the area where all the other businesses are already closed down for the night, and there is a crowd outside around Yang Chow. That was a good sign! We did not have reservations, which I suggest. Our wait was around 30 minutes, and we joined the merrymaking outside where some kids had popping fireworks. It was worth the wait, for sure. We ordered steamed dumplings, slippery chicken, and slippery shrimp. Absolutely delicious! We all kept saying we were full, but wanted to keep eating as it was so good. Even the fried rice was fresh and flavorful. The wait staff kept our water glasses full, but we filled up on hot tea. Everyone was so attentive. The only problem - wish I didn't live so far away.

Yummy Chinese food in the heart of LA's Chinatown

By NoStopSigns |

We came for dinner and had a tasty dinner. As mentioned by other reviewers, yes, the Slippery Shrimp was very tasty as was the other dishes we ordered (Three Musketeer Chow Mein and Bean Curd with Pork) except for the Sweet & Sour Chicken, in which the carrots in the dish was uncooked but the chicken itself was good. We liked the pics of celebrities and memorabilia they had as their wall decoration. If you go, you may want to get a reservation so you don't have to wait, especially on a Friday or Saturday night.

Dinner in chinatown

By Schspa |

Had a nice dinner, 3 of us, had soup, appetizer, two entrees. Was enough food for 4 or 5. Fried wontons were delicious. We had slippery shrimp, kung pow chicken. All very good. Would go again

Remains Outstanding-an LA Institution

By hakccmd |

One of the best Chinese restaurants anywhere. Slippery Shrimp the most popular dish on the menu; the chef prepares anywhere between 100 and 200 orders per day! The combo of steamed dumplings, szechuan beef, slippery shrimp and string beans with pork was over the top with unique flavors and textures.

The best Chinese food in LA

By Tina T |

We visited here while on holiday in LA and were reccommended this place. We were not disappointed. We had to wait for a table and there was a queue outside as they were extremely busy and I can see why! The service was quick and the waiters were very friendly and attentive. The food was amazing! Slippery Shrimp was the best! I'd highly reccommended but I'd advise you to book.

Great Chinese Restaurant

By Like2travel-eat |

I had a dinner there and it was packed even on Wednesday night. Food was very good and the servers were well dressed, very friendly, efficient, and attentive. The restaurant manger, Benny Yun, was very friendly, going to each table and chatting with customers. The restaurant ambient was pleasant and welcoming. I highly recommend this restaurant.

VERY GOOD EXPERIENCE

By HARRY M |

We were greeted warmly and seated promptly. Typical menu items. Had the chicken with bean sprouts and the shrimp fried rice and both were very good. Very generous servings. Service was very good and we were checked on regularly. Very good experience.

A disappointment

By Vivian Q |

The waiters were unbothered and when you ask them something they just don't care much. But the food wasn't even that good, don't know why is this place famous for, just for being a old restaurant located in Chinatown? It is definitely not authentic Chinese food. For being a Asian I know what I talk about. Won't even bother to come back. A big disappointment.

SLIGHTLY ABOVE AVERAGE - ALMOST 4 STARS!

By iCritic |

The wait staff was great. The food was just good. A little greasy, a little too salty, served all at once versus getting courses so you didn’t have a congested table and time to enjoy the soup and appetizers before the main course. We had their top dish - SLIPPERY SHRIMP - it was pretty good. The pot stickers were thick and chewy, the Yang Fried Rice was over salted. Overall the food was “good” and probably better than average for a Chinatown restraunt. But we hoped and expected a little more from a place with such good ratings. We’ll give them another try sometime.

very bad service. to avoid

food less than average service terrible not expensive deco very simple avoid pork fried dumpling.. nothing to eat inside... to avoid

A Winning Restaurant in Chinatown

By Gary N |

Yang Chow was recommended to us by a local. We (wisely) made reservations in advance. When we arrived early we walked around and found the same block held 3 restaurants with Grade B ratings, and one with Grade C. Happily, Yang Chow had a Grade A. Those without reservations found waiting times of 30 to 90 minutes (a Saturday night). The food was exceptionally good, the staff friendly, and the seating comfortable in spite of a very full establishment. I would gladly return.

West Side

By Rich J |

Finding a quality Chinese restaurant on LA's West Side has been frustrating for this ex-New Yorker. But, I'd expect a much more flavorful experience if willing to spend the time and exert the effort to travel to Chinatown. Such was not the case with Yang Chow. The restaurant was clean; the service excellent; and the management on top of things. Only one problem...the food had no taste-one dish blander than the next. We tried 4 different dishes, and all of them were uninspiring. Save your gas money and eat mediocre Chinese food at home on the West Side.

Mediocre and over priced.

I've been to this restaurant a few times over the years and I've always walked away thinking that was nothing special I think if anything the food today was a lesser version of what it used to be the place was absolutely packed the kitchen did a pretty good job of keeping up with the crowd but frankly I have no idea why this restaurant so popular I think they're ghosting on their laurels. They have a few famous dishes they've gotten a few good reviews from credible sources over the years, and that seems to be what they're banking on. We ordered about five dishes and there was not a single dish that was wow, there were a couple of dishes that were tasty but nothing remarkable. My pan fried noodles were greasy, the quality of the seafood was low, there were no greens other than a few pieces of broccoli and it was kind of a boring dish. Also, the hostess was abrupt and sort of rude, and the wait to get a table was long. There was really nothing about the meal that stood out. If you want a mediocre place that's expensive and very crowded this is your spot.

Big Portions, Great Service!

The restaurant is located in old chinatown and from the outside, you had to open the door to check if they really were open since the shops around it were all closed at night, the street was quiet and only their sign was lit up. They have their own parking and valet available right behind the restaurant so that was great. We ordered 3 dishes for the 3 of us and rice since everything looked great! Some of the dishes were recommended by our server and when we were unsure he said if it wasn't nice he would take it back. When the dishes arrived, we felt the pork dish was alittle dry and not to our liking. Upon feedback, he so kindly took it back and we ordered another dish instead. Everything tasted great and definitely fixed our craving for chinese food.

Outstanding Chinese food

This is a very busy restaurant. I tell you this so that you know that even with a reservation you can wait, as we did for over half an hour to get our table. That being said, the service was very good and the food was excellent. They have a large menu with all the Chinese dishes you can think of. We were a large party of 10 and we shared our dishes so I can honestly say all the choices were excellent

Can't understand the great reviews!

I lived in LA for 30 years and never went to this place. Staying downtown and wanted Chinese food. Our old standby, Monkee, had gone out of business, so I jumped on Tripadvisor to find a restaurant in Chinatown. This one was rated #2, and was #1 on Yelp, so I thought we couldn't go wrong, right? Wrong! Walked in around 1PM and was seated right away. Pretty standard Chinatown decor. Service was brisk and polite. We perused the menu and ordered quickly: Spring Rolls, Hot and Sour Soup, Fried Shrimp and House Special Crispy Noodles. The spring Rolls were crispy and hot, but the filling had no flavor at all. The shrimp were good and crunchy, but room temperature like they had been sitting around for a while. The soup was not bad, but the noodles were bland with no distinguishable flavor. The only good thing I can say is it was clean and the service was quick and professional. I would not go back.

Overrated

Popular judging from the line we were in on Sunday. Pan fried dumplings were great...rest of the meal was disappointing. We ordered two dishes described as “hot and spicy”; hey weren’t even close.

Good restaurant in Chinatown

Restaurant in Chinatown, with very friendly staff, fast service, delicious food and good rations. Excellent value for money. I recommend the specialties of the house.

Excellent Chinese Food

I had jury duty in downtown Los Angeles which is close to Chinatown. So one day for lunch I decided to walk there for my lunch break and I am very pleased that I did and found this restaurant. Moments after I was seated the staff arrived with water and a pot of tea. I ordered the lamb with scallions, which is one of their specialties. The lamb was tender and flavorful, you can order a side of either white or brown rice. Since I was only able to consume half, I had the remainder for dinner. The restaurant was crowded but the staff was attentive. It’s not one of the most inexpensive restaurants but worth every bite. They have several larger round tables available for groups. If you’re going there for lunch arrive before noon or make reservations, it is worth the wait.

Top Notch Dive

Service was OK, but food was really tasty. We had a few different Kung Pao dishes that were delicious and noodles were very good. Egg rolls and fried rice were pretty typical; nothing special. But the main courses shine and the price is reasonable.

BEST CHINESE FOOD I HAVE EVER HAD

We walked in and were not sure by the appearance or the restaurant but the food was amazing. Great service and food. Coming from Brisbane Australia this was the best Chinese we have ever eaten and we have eaten at the best Chinese joints in brisbane do not compare to this place. Don’t be fooled by the photos of the food looking greasy, it is not. Must get the Mongolian lamb and fish with garlic and ginger.

The service was great and the food was so good I went back for more. The waiters are attentive and fun to talk with. Food came quickly.
