Now, Yannis Greek Taverna, under ownership by Yannis Karageorgos, is a wonderful addition to the Cypress restaurant scene. With our benchmark being Yia Yia Mary's in the Galleria, we visited this newly opened restaurant on the spur of the moment. My wife both had the chicken souvlaki, she with the Greek potatoes and a salad, me with the rice and a Greek salad. Both dishes were very nice and the service was great. The homemade hummus and pita bread is the best we've ever had! Yannis could still learn a little from Yia Yia Mary's on marinading the chicken for added tenderness and the Greek potatoes could stand a little more flavor. With that said, this is a very good restaurant and one that we will definitely return to. Oh, we had a complimentary glass of the house red wine and found it to be delightful.

I have eaten here several times and brought friends and family and they enjoyed it too. The Greek foods were super but the other standards were just ok. Great vegetarian choices and tasty, flaky desserts in oversize portions. I personally like the Greek salad with spanakopita. The salads are fresh and crispy and the dressing and the tzatziki sauce was refreshing and so tasty. I will keep going back!

Place is nice. Simple. Visited for lunch, several families in place. The food was ok. The classic jyro was tasty but I didn’t like the meat. Something there was not “ok” Price was reasonable Vegetables in the salad was fresh Service, was excellent. Attentive, service oriented. Will visit again to check if the food is typically better but will do it mainly because of the service

A bit of a let down. Was really hoping for a nice Greek Restaurant in our neighborhood but this isn't it. The service was excellent with a friendly and helpful staff but the food was just average. They don't have a full liquor license yet and no wine list but you go to the bar and can see what is available. All the food is fine but it all tastes like it just came out of the Costco frozen food section and through the fryer. My wife and I tried the Calamari and Pit with five dips to start. The calamari was straight from the freezer to the fryer and nothing to note. The pita was hot but the dips were just average. My wife ordered the Leg of Lamb with rice and potatoes and I ordered the sampler platter. Again what was served was not a leg (or partial leg) of lamb but perfect slices in some au jus without a lot of flavor. The roasted potatoes were the best part of the meal as the rice had no flavor. The same for the sampler platter, everything was average in flavor and tasted like it came out of the Costco freezer. We were really hoping for an authentic, home style Greek Restaurant and what this is is a fast food version. Go if you need a taste of Greek but not if you are looking for Mama's home cooking.

I Needed a place where the service time was going to be quick and the food good. We stopped at Opa Greek Tavern. I had the Gyro with Greek Fries, my associate had the Chicken Greek Salad. I could not believe that the Gyro had real lamb! I mean, real tasteful lamb! The Greek fries were good. My Associate kept telling me, "this is real good salad." I think this new mom and pop style restaurant will continue to grow its menu as people hear about this place. I will be back. p.s. The waiters are fantastic

I drive past this place now and then, so one early evening I gave it a try. Rather than order take-out, I sat at a table beside a window. Service was attentive, patient, and cordial. From a plain yet intriguing menu, I chose an appetizer, a salad, and an entrée. The appetizer of pita with tzatziki dip was excellent. The nicely chilled Greek salad had a feta slab with lettuce, cukes, peppers, onions, capers, Kalamata olives, and tomatoes. The Greek house salad dressing for it was perfect. The fantastic moussaka entrée came with zucchini, eggplant, squash, potatoes, marinara sauce, mozzarella, and béchamel sauce. All the portions were just the right size. This low-key restaurant became steadily busier and noisier but was not yet crowded before I left. It had free onsite self-parking. Although the ambiance was a bit downscale, the food and service were great here.

Honest to goodness Greek Food. The smell and the music. Great Cabbage Rolls, Moussaka, Gyros. Lovely Olives and Feta as a starter. Prices are reasonable. Wait Staff was excellent. I will return and you should try it

Finding the restaurant was a little tricky, as the sign is just a small fabric sign (we drove past the restaurant a couple of times before we found it) Dined here for lunch on Saturday, Our server who's name I can't recall introduced himself as 100% Greek and told us he was helping out as they were busy and usually works in construction, The service was very, very good. The food was a little on the disappointing side and I will be back at a later date as I'm sure this was all part to new restaurant teething issues. I ordered the layered meat and pasta dish, don't know the name but its basically the greek Lasagna. The dish was completely cold on the inside (stone Cold) and had to be returned to the kitchen, The fries were inedible, so over cooked they were even more crunchier than chips. The rice was very good. Once the pasta dish came back it was very tasty and I would certainly order it again. Decor was basic nothing fancy, but it was neat and clean

I really like this place. Their gyros are amazing and their greek fries are unusual and so delicious. And their prices are VERY reasonable. I have also had their baked feta appetizer (forget the exact name) and it was excellent too, but my favorite appetizer is their fried zucchini. So good. The restaurant is not really decorated nice, it's been so many different restaurants before, but I am rooting for this place to be successful. The staff is super friendly and attentive and as I've said, the food is really good. Anyone I've taken there really likes it alot!

Really great inexpensive Greek food. So happy to finally have this restaurant close-by. Don't let the rough exterior fool you. The owners just opened and I'm sure will do some updates in the exterior soon.

Restaurant was busy, but tables are spaced well and you did not feel rushed at all. Lunch special was great. The beef kabob was cooked a perfect medium. You get warm pita bread and hummus with oil brought to you as soon as you sit down. Everything was homemade. The Greek fries and sauces were so good. The portions are large. I def recommend this spot and will be back to try more of the menu. Could not do desserts today, but they had some in a display case in the front that looked amazing.

Yummy! I’ve passed this restaurants many times, but never stopped. We were at a nearby escape room and decided to try it. The hummus and pita bread that they bring out with your drinks is some of the best that I’ve ever had. I had the classic gyro and a Greek salad. It was delicious. My daughter had the chicken gyro with Greek salad and it was okay, but not as good as the classic. My son had the classic with the fries. They were yummy. I’d probably get them next time. We will be back!

A humble Greek spot with little atmosphere (I hope it gets better) but excellent food and insane portions a a fair price. A full bar would be a nice addition as would more intimate seating. The Sanganaki cheese was served flaming and delicious. The bread, way too good, and distinctly Greek. The gyro sandwich was my lunch and dinner, as was the gyro plate my wife ordered. Attentive pleasant service too. If you are going for the food, go! Atmosphere, not so much. I plan to return for my next Greek fix whether tomorrow or next week, it's that good.

I have been 2 times for lunch and love everything I have tried here.Prices are great also! Service is very good. Highly recommend!

Good food and definitely a wonderful waitstaff! Even spoke with the owner who came over to introduce herself. This is the type of place you hope sticks around for a long time in the neighbourhood. Next time I’m definitely making room for dessert, it looked so good!

I have been wanting to go here. I saved their menu from a mailer. I ordered the Mousakka, greek fries, roasted potatoes, and the small salad. Everything was excellent! Look forward to dining in.

This place is right on the road but there's a for lease sign and a gigantic Mexican restaurant sign that shadows this place so make sure you brag about this place and market it. They bring warm pita and hummus as an appetizer which is amazing. Ordered their gyro with Greek fries. Omg was it so good.

This restaurant has only been open 3 weeks, but the food was very good and there was an excellent selection of dishes. I had the Moussaka (Eggplant Lasagna), and it was excellent. Reading a previous review, it is now easy to find with a large sign, that you can't miss. You know this is authentic Greek food when you see the Yia Yia sitting in the back knitting. Finally a Greek restaurant serving good food.

Last sunday I stopped by with my family for lunch. We were looking for something different and this seemed to be the right place. I will start with the good things about this place: the attention of the restaurant personnel was great; they make you really feel as special guests. As for the food, the Baklava and the Pita bread with hummus were good. That's about it. Things to improve... everything else. For starters their drinks. I ordered an ice tea and I got something that looked that a very very diluted tea that tasted like water. When I returned it to the server she happily exchanged only to find out the same tasteless liquid. The manager told me that was the tea... no sir! that is not tea. Coffee.... I ordered coffee to balance out the sweetness of the Baklava. Big mistake... the coffee was horrible. The rest of the food was really OK too much grease, super large portions; a bit disappointing. We will not be coming back.

My husband and I enjoyed this restaurant. Under new management I believe it’s even better. We ate the Greek fajitas, the okra, Greek salad, all good. Excellent service, friendly management/ eat the custard cake!!!

I stop here often for takeout. Love the entrees, sides, and desserts. And the wait staff is very friendly (and helpful).

This was out first time trying this establishment...my wife & I were wanting something "different", so my wife remembered this new Greek restaurant on Jones Rd, so we traveled from 290 to Jones to try them out. We walked in and were seated. The waitress took out drink order, and the proceeded to bring us a complimentary sample of hummus & fresh made pita bread to try....oh my God, this was soooooo good! As we tried not to look like a bunch of starving people gobbling up this awesome sample we got, we look at out menu. The waitress came to take out order, I asked her about the 2 sampler - which she described them both....my wife & I decided on the Greek Sampler...with that meal came 2 veggie sides....so, we we sooo impressed with the hummus & pita bread, I asked my waitress, "Would it be OK to drop the two-veggies items...and could we please just have another side of the hummus & pita?" The waitress was MORE than willing to make us happy - and then she told us, I will not even up-charge you on that either! - which made my wife & I VERY happy! The meal came out and was 4 plates FULL of food...one was the Greek variety of items, the 2nd was the meats, pita bread & sides to make Gyros, the 3rd was a super-size plate of the hummus, and the 4th was a super size plate of pita bread! Just as we were finishing our meal, we got a visit from the owner...she asked us how our meal was, and then she began to tell us a little bit about herself and the brief history of the restaurant - and why she started it. Needless to say, my wife & I only eat about "half" of the entire meal...and it took 3 to-go boxes, to take home the rest for lunch the next day!!! The owner than asked us if we would like to order dessert....I told her, "look at all the food we are taking home....we have no more room for dessert...but, thank you for asking"....she then said, "I'll be right back"...which she then brought us a small to-go container, and it had two cookies in it...which she said, "Please take these 2 cookies and try them at home for FREE...that way when you come in next time, you will know that we have desserts as well." The overall bill for this meal was $30.31 total....and my wife & I were so impressed on the overall experience, we left $38.00 form the overall bill. Need less to say, my wife & I will be back...and are MORE than willing to let everyone else know how awesome our experience was!

We're happy to have a Greek restaurant in north Houston and went after several glowing reviews from neighbors. The gyros were very flavorful, as was the tzatziki sauce. The pitas were wonderful. However, the hummus was very disappointing, Grainy with not nearly enough olive oil. Vegetables need some work. Service was good. When we went they did not have their liquor license yet but hopefully that will change. Décor is a bit 90s but it's a good place for families and not fancy. We'll try it again with the hope that as they are open longer, they will improve some of the things they are getting negative feedback on.

We stopped in for dinner after attending the nearby theater. Our server was attentive and very welcoming. The food was great. Each person ordered something different and we all were very pleased with the food. Some of the best I have had in Houston area. Unfortunately there were not a lot of people in the restaurant while we were there. It is located in an area that was devastated by Hurricane Harvey. Block after block of homes are empty and trash still out at the curbs. Wonderful restaurant in a wonderful neighborhood. If you are in the area stop by and enjoy yourself.

I have been waiting for some great Greek Food for a long time without the drive to the Galleria Area. Loved the food here - simple things like pita bread, hummus and dolmades are delicious! I wanted to try everything (impossible on the first visit) so everyone at my table shared food. The wait staff was very attentive to our table and the restaurant was packed. I will definitely be back to try different dishes!

Drove to the location today only to find a lockout note on the door so this business may have shut down for failure to pay their rent. Sad because they are the closer Greek place for me to visit looks like I’ll be finding another location to have my Greek fix.

OPA! It's been a long time since trying a new restaurant and feeling this way! Both the service and the food were OUTSTANDING! Starting with the complimentary fresh warm pita and hummus that was so smooth and tasty, it just continued to get better! The lamb chops were cooked to perfection, as was the lamb shank. The meat was so tender and the sauce was perfectly seasoned. Lemon roasted potatoes and rice were delicious as well. Our server was very attentive and friendly. The prices were very reasonable. Wish we had room for dessert!

We were blown away with this great greek food. It was even better than the food we had in Greece. The portions were large and the spices are out of this world. We met the owner and cook of all the dishes. Very friendly and the waitress was great. This was recommend to us and from now on this is are home for greek food. They even gave us samples of some of their desserts.

We are thrilled to have good Greek food closer to home! We have gone 3 times since they opened. The hummus, dolmas and spanakopita small plates are delicious. The soulvaki, gryos and pastitsio are also great a large enough to share. The service however is spotty and slow. The atmosphere overall is a bit chaotic. They have a "help wanted" sign posted. We hope once they are fully staffed, the service will improve. For now, the food is good enough to keep us coming.

Was so excited to finally have some Mediterranean food in north Houston. Saturday night visit, restaurant was busy. Our server "Megan" was awesome and really on her game.Wish could say same about the food. Lettuce in Greek salad was soggy, dressing uninspiring, green beans from a can.The standard for any Greek place should be the gyros and it was the blandest I've ever tasted. Tzatziki sauce was flat with an off flavor. The highlight of the meal was the nice fluffy pita. I really wanted this place to be good but don't think I will be returning.

Wow. The Gyro Plate was excelent. I'll be going back for sure. Nice to have authentic greek cuisine in the area.

We stopped in for Sunday lunch and weren't disappointed. I had the gyro plate. The food is good, with large portions. Prices were very reasonable, and the service was great. I'll be going back.

Decided to get off the beaten path of Mexican and Chinese food restaurants in the are and try this place out. Half our group is vegetarian/vegan, and the chef was willing to make some modifications for us. All portions were large, and everyone took home at least half their meals. Everything was delicious from salad, main meal and dessert. Not crowded, and did not feel rushed or that the wait staff was rushed. Servers were very attentive and answered all questions about ingredients. Would definitely come again.

I come here weekly for the appetizer for 2 to go and I have tried most everything on the menu. The staff is always extremely friendly and the food is the BEST Greek food around. I highly recommend all of their menu options for both vegetarians and carnivores!

First- new decor brightens the mood. One feels welcome with pleasing blue walls and contemporary lighting. The kitchen crew keeps me returning due to their consistent culinary skills. The eggplant appetizer is served hot and yummy. Once seated delight in the hot pita and hummus plate bought to your table. Moussaka, our favorite warms a cold winter day. GIve this greek restaurant a try!

My husband and I decided to try lunch here a few days ago, in spite of some unusual reviews. We both ordered the gyro lunch special with Greek fries. They were loaded with meat, just as good as YaYa's, and the fries were fun. Nadia our server was very helpful and we will soon be going back for dinner to try her suggestions. Don't miss the custard cake!

With Yia Yia Mary's Papas Greek kitchen as a benchmark, perhaps Opa's was destined to fall short. However, since this restaurant is much closer, we decided to try it since music and belly dancing were promised. Well, there was no entertainment, disappointment #1. Disappointment #2 two of their signature dishes, lamb and chicken souvlaki, fell far short of good as the lamb was tough and the chicken was dry. The kalamari appetizer was also chewy and tasteless although the marinara sauce was very nice. The Greek potatoes and the fried zuchinni were nice as well. All in all, a big disappointment.

We love Mediterranean food - restaurants and to cook at home. This place is awesome!! Ordered to go twice now and everything has been delicious- they maybe could be a bit more generous on appetizer dips and probably are in house. Next time we will eat in but I cannot imagine how it could be better- flavors and meat / veggies/ salads are all excellent quality - a new favorite for us for sure!!

A group of 10 of us went Sunday evening to celebrate a friend's birthday. The waitress was really friendly and eager to answer any questions about the menu. After we ordered, the food arrived sporadically. Mine came first. I ordered the Chicken Santorini. I expected a chicken breast but what I received were to small tenderloins in the middle of a bowl of rice. I don't know what they put in the sauce, something besides the stated capers, wine, lemon juice, butter but after only a few minutes my esophagus swelled shut. I could not swallow or breathe. I tried to take a drink of water and threw up at the table. I was in anaphylactic shock. They must have contaminated my meal with seafood or something else that I am allergic to. I really thought I was dying. I could have died. No one at the restaurant even came to check on me. I will not be going back for that reason.
Now called YANNIS Greek Tavern. New Owner- fresh ingredients.
Rush over. They bring warm pita bread with fresh hummus. My mouth is still watering! The large Moussaka lunch platter with greek potatoes tickles your taste buds. We've dined on Pastitsio, Gyros, cabbage rolls- each time we try a new dish, not disappointed. Start with an eggplant appetizer, served with 2 sauces. The sweet garlic is very pleasing. The red marinara sauce with olive oil is packed with flavor. We're delighted to find this local place. The new owner is in kitchen, making recipes I wish I could take home. Go for the food, go for the friendly staff.
