Fresh hot delicious veggie safe food here!

By G612 |

We live pretty far from this restaurant at 111th and SE Powell, but really worth the trip for truly safe vegetarian food. Had a tofu dish, savory with hints of Tamarind and delicious spicy sauce. Also had veggie seafood with mixed vegetables, requesting brown sauce added an additional layer of tasty to this entree. Also had Chinese Yams and asparagus, perfectly done, delicious and delicate in its white sauce. The restaurant appears to be housed in a 60’s era dance or band club, looks like a kinda fun place to have a party, plenty of room.

Not bad for non-vegan visitors

Our vegan neighbors have been taking us to some of their favorite restaurants and they have led us to several restaurants we might not have tried on our own. We have been looking for a traditional Cantonese restaurant since moving to Portland and the sauces and seasonings at Yan Su Vegetarian have come the closest to the ones we remember from our childhoods. The restaurant is in a dilapidated shopping center and the inside of the restaurant is not very welcoming. We were seated in the second room, which felt like a cafeteria. However, we were greeted warmly and the service was excellent. We started with an order of spring rolls and they were very good. I ordered a combination dinner with fried rice, sweet and sour "chicken," and "beef" with broccoli. The portions are generous, but not crazy. Two people could certainly fill up on one combination dinner. My favorite item was the "beef" with broccoli. It was flavorful and tender. The "chicken," which had a very good sauce, could barely be cut with a knife. I don't know if it was overcooked, but it was definitely a disappointment. The fried rice was less colorful than I have had at other restaurants, but it was excellent. We will definitely go back and try more of Yan Su's menu items.

Great vegan food

We live in Seattle and our favorite Chinese vegan restaurant closed during COVID. We have driven to Portland just to get food from Yuan Su, it is so good! Their mapo tofu has that tongue-numbing pepper in it and we have loved everything we have tried there. Only wish they were closer to home!

Vegan Chinese food in Portland!!

We were going to be in Portland for the afternoon so we ordered lunch online for take out. This restaurant only offers take out right now. They have blocked off their entrance so you can't go into the restaurant but can get take out. We ordered a Veggie chicken and salted fish fried rice, Veg Beef Chow Fun, Lemon Veg Fish, a Combo 1 (Veg Ham fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, veg beef with broccoli and a spring roll) and a Combo 2 (Veg ham friend rice, Veg bbq pork, veg kung pao chicken and a spring roll. Everything was excellent. The portions were very large so we actually had enough leftovers to fill a box which we kept in a cooler until we got home. I wish this restaurant was in the Seattle area. We would eat there a lot.

Large selection of delicious vegan food! Great customer service. A little out of the way but worth the drive.

I've been a vegetarian for 2 years and this is some of the best vegetarian food I've had. Didn't expect much going in, but definitely will be returning SOON!

We tried "beef" and broccoli, fried "pork" belly, bittermelon with black bean, and "lamb" with bean curd skin hotpot - they all tasted great!
