Small bar/restaurant with great pizza - the crust and toppings were excellent. We had had the Da Vinci palette - ordered a large for my husband and I and our two children and we had leftovers. Great service and local. Expect a bit of a dive - food and service worth it. Walked to Lombard Street after.

Hit this pizza place after reading the reviews. Very short walk from Union square. Great pizza, friendly staff, and don’t pass on the salad.

We had delivery as the place is tiny and not realoly built for dine in. Over $40 for a large pizza ($35 base rate then add an item and sales tax and you are approaching $45!) Salads are $12 but very tasty. We did not get any drinks.

The place is simple and cozy, the pizza is a delight, simple thin dough but excellent tasting, and the Ghost Town beer they sell by cask is a delight, the price is quite accessible definitely highly recommended to go with family or friends, children give a leaf to draw their picture and leave their mark on the walls of the place.

We sat on the sidewalk and had a few slices of pizza and some wine here. The pizza was delicious and the service very friendly. Really nice place to have a big slice of pizza and a drink.

Very rich thin dough pizza and different flavors. The shore was also creaky. Prepare instantly and relatively quickly. The place is small for 4 tables and the bar

Ordered half and half medium pizza (pepperoni no cheese and pesto/mushroom no sauce) - ate outside (tiny interior) - delicious and very affordable (down the street from Sweeney’s ice cream and near Lombard street)

I love pizza. Worked at a bunch of pizza joints. Made a lot of pies. Eaten a lot of pies. Also enjoyed a lot of difference pizza experiences and this place is it. You wont find anything better, probably anywhere. Sure, you may find some fancy this or that, but this is the real pizza experience, how it should be. The staff are nice, no nonsense. They are cool to your kids. The place has solid atmosphere, dingy SF but charming as it gets. Great for people watching and a chill conversation where you dont have to shout. Do yourself a favor and hit this place up. The pizza is the draw, but the rest of the experience nails it down. Pizza perfection.

Awesome, must do while in SanFran 👍casual atmosphere which is great, 4 tables of four and Bar sits 6 so prepare to wait at peak hours or take away

Great place, great team and great pizza! We liked the easy going mood of the place which is without doubt a must go when in SF.

Was recommended to eat at Za from someone who used to live in the area. It is a small restaurant but there was an open table when we arrived. Staff was very welcoming and made you feel at home. The large pizza is big and was able to feed three adults and two older children with left overs. They make thin crust pizza with fresh toppings.

Super atypical pizza place Huge pizza for 4 We had a great time and even bought paintings by artists on display on the wall. A true local memory made in San Francisco ...

Great little restaurant find in San Fran. Myself and my fiancé were in San Fran for a couple of days while touring the west coast. Would highly recommend! We shared a medium spicy sausage pizza and plenty to fill us up for the evening, good price with a couple of drinks came to about $30. Great service!

The pizza was not bad. Simply an American style pizza. I personally prefer Italian style pizzas. Service was not friendly but also not rude. Not sure I would visit again but Im sure anyone who likes American style pizzas would like this place.

Visited Za Pizza after seeing the reviews on here and I was very impressed. Coming from the UK I was eager to try an authentic American pizza and wasn’t disappointed. Need to get used to an American Large as it was huge, and I ordered two of them, so we still have left overs. This isn’t a bad thing. The shop was nice with 3 tables inside and 3 outside, with walls lined with pictures drawn by customers I can only assume. Service was friendly and to the point as it was busy when I visited. Highly recommended.

I liked the place, friendly staff and the kids drawings on the wall. Pizzas are prepared the American way: crispy, a lot of toppings, but honestly not my favorite. Good pale ale beer and reasonable prices. Definitely Not my favorite pizzeria in sf but worth going if you’re around here.

Wonderful, fantastic atmosphere, super nice owner and wonderful food. We were visiting from Georgia. It was the best pizza we’ve ever had, and the German lager was awesome. You should eat here whether you live there or visiting.

Found this spot through google - not very well advertised - just a little store on a quiet street - inside is very tasty thin crust pizza slices for reasonable prices

Great meal for not much. Had a medium chicken special pizza and shared it between 2 of us. It was huge and filled us both up. Delicious pizza wasn't too hot when it came out and the thin crust was awesome. Table service was attentive and polite. Highly recommended

We found Za just down the street from where we were staying in Russian Hill. Our hosts said it was the best pizza in the city and it did not disappoint. Only about 4 tables or so for inside seating so depending upon the time of day, you may need to get it to go. Staff was friendly and efficient and the pizza was very tasty. Pizza is one of those items that varies regionally and people have their preferences, but for our money, this was very good pizza. We'll come back on our next visit to San Francisco.

Za pizza was recommended to me last year when I visited SF for the first time - I was told by a colleague it was the best pizza on earth and it did not disappoint! We returned to SF for one night last week and once again it was fabulous - seriously the best pizza on earth (and I’ve eaten a lot of pizza in my time) and great staff too.

One of the most delicious pizza i've ever eat (Pepperoni and Pesto) 😋 Also the owner was very familiar and the place was nice too!

We went on a recommendation for pizza, the large pizza with a selection of different toppings easily enough to feed the 4 of us. And it's incredibly tasty pizza also, definitely highly recommended

Excellent Pizza, about a 10 minutes walk from North Beach area. Quite small inside, so I would recommend take out.

We called in around 2pm on Friday with no less than 12 friends. This was no problem we we're immediately seated and looked after by the wonderful owner. They went out of their way to accommodate not just the large group but the various food allergies. The pizzas are to die food, the beer cold and served quickly. Thank you guys for a great lunch.

First question, how's this place #18 on tripadvisor? Pizza is average. Crust lacks taste and flavor. They also use cornmeal on the bottom of the pizza instead of or with flour. Sauce and cheese are ok. Restaurant is on the small side. Maybe 10 tables. Expect to wait if you go for dinner. Salad was also average. Service was friendly and cordial. If you're from the east coast, Za pizza is average at best. Order a pie with toppings, hit helps mask the flavor. Large pie is big enough for 3-4 adults.

A very small place with 5 tables and bar seating. It really seemed very “homey “. All they serve is pizza and some salads. The pizzas are amazing. We ordered the Moma pizza. It consisted of artichokes onions and basil. EXCELLENT!! We also had the beer on tap which was Anchor Steam. Make sure you put your name on the list by the door entrance. Even though they were busy, the wait was not long at all, 10 minutes at the most. The server was very polite. Thanks to your team for making our night very special!!

Pizza is great, just a little less great on delivery!! More than .45 mins over expected time, and we were told an hour! Over promised, under delivered

Again Trip Advisor didn't disappoint, we took a very slow walk UP Hyde, taking in the great views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge to find Za Pizza, which at first glance wasn't what we expected. But thankfully we went in and had one of the best pizzas we've ever had. One large pizza for 4 was plenty. Don't be put off by the appearance, you won't regret it.

Good pizza, little place there’s like 3-4 tables. Take out mostly but you can sit if there’s not too much people. Nothing fancy. We recommend!!

Fresh slices were great. You could tell the difference between those that had been sitting awhile vs the slice that just came from the pie straight out of the oven. Staff was friendly and service was prompt.

This pizzeria was excellent in every way possible, from friendly staff members to delicious pizza. They also serve a nice local beer. If you're in San Francisco, this is a place you must visit! Cheers

Not at all what we expected. Very small neighborhood place. Very informal. Some limited outdoor seating. Very good, a bit funky, but fun.

It was an absolute highlight. Highly recommended! Pizza very big, people incredibly nice. Music of the hammer. Felt back to my youth!

We visited Za Pizza as part of our US roadtrip 2017. After spending several hours in a car we went out to eat quite late around 9 PM. Even though Za Pizza closes at 22 PM the place was packed! Many locals popping in and out of the small eatery with only a few tables inside and outside. The atmosphere was so nice and friendly that we decided to try to wait for a table. Luckily we were told that it would only take about 10 minutes before we could be seated inside. It was worth the wait! We ordered the largest pizza and it was huge! We have two big kids (11 and 14) and they eat a lot but we had more than enough to make everybody happy. Furthermore we ordered a large Garden Salat to share. We were served 4 big bowls of nice and crispy salat. Wauw, it was so good! I really like the fact that the menu is quite simple and the quality of the food is high. It is no nonsense food accompanied by a very friendly staff. I hope that I will visit the great city of San Francisco again. When that happensI will definitely eat at Za Pizza again. :-D

They sell hole pizzas and also slices, I hed the best Italian pizza of my life, the fetta cheese and the sausage were delicious, also great pepperoni and cheese pizzas.

Great pizza! Was staying down the street and had just got to SF from Boston so was looking for a quick bite to eat. Staff was super friendly and brought our pizza out to us at the table outside. They checked in a few times to see how we were doing too. I had a slice of the Bluto pizza with sausage spinach and feta and it was amazing. Hubby has the pepperoni and he was equally impressed. Will definitely be trying again before we head home.

We went based on trip advisor reviews. It is a very small place with only a few tables. The service was good. We didn't wait that long for a pizza. The family enjoyed the pizza and the quaint atmosphere. Would go back to hang out again. Also close to a cable car stop if heading from Union Square to Fisherman's Wharf.

The place has great reviews, it's 8:30pm, I'm on vacation and very hungry but don't want to leave to get food for safety issues in a big city. Let's order a pizza and have it delivered to the hotel room. Sounds like a great plan until the don't answer their phone, have no voicemail, phone company gives a weird message. Tried on another phone, same thing. Either fix your phone or join the 21st century and allow ordering online.

We made the walk back up Hyde St from our hotel to Za Pizza after having it recommended. It was worth the walk....well, I thought so😂😂 We shared a medium pizza between the 2 of us (6 slices) and really enjoyed it, not too greasy. The place is only small, counter area and 3 tables in, 3 out. They seem to do a pretty good takeaway business too. Staff were friendly and helpful and I’d def go back next time I’m in town.

I went with my friends to dine Pizza in the morning and it was really American taste ! Good ambience and professional staff. Liked taste of natural food and rich ingredients

This tiny Pizza bakery has a very bistro like atmosphere with nicely drawn pictures of former customers enyoing their Pizza. It is really delicious with a thin pastry and well spiced topping. Pricing is more than fair and the service very quick, even on a Friday evening. To recommend for a quick and tasty supper.

So this tiny restaurant is located near lombard/crooked street in san fransisco. We ordered 2 pizzas one with a red sauce and the other with a green sauce, half n half for both, and it was the best pizza that I had in my life. The ready slice was even better than the pizza that we ordered You just have to experience it to understand the taste. The owner was friendly. We even put up a drawing on his wall.

We had the Vincent Van Dough and the MOMA pizza both were beautiful to look at, crust was magnificent, plentiful fillings, quality cheese and generous size. The salads are huge but at $12 made with crispy lettuce and lovely toppings. Perfect! It is so nice to have it as our neighborhood pizza place this month. The ingredients are beautiful quality and they don’t make the pizza soggy as many places do. The subtlety of the roast garlic was mouth watering. Only a couple of tables inside - but they have delivery and it took about 20 minutes for pickup. We will definitely return.

We were at the Marriott hotel, and we place a delivery order, two square pizzas, very good tasting food, NOT disappointed at all. We highly recommend it.

Great pizza joint, chilled atmosphere, staff very friendly and excellent music. Most importantly though genuinely the best pizza I have ever had! Had some great local beers aswell.

This place offers some of the best thin crust I have ever had. If you are visiting SF, it’s worth going out of your way to eat here. Enjoy!

This pizza was the best. We got the pepperoni and spicy sausage.. The crust was the perfect crunch. We loved it and ate it all.

Out walking with my wife, popped for slices and beer, what great find. Delicious pizza cold beer and very friendly staff

Super friendly, great pizza at great prices - the guys were really accommodating to our jet lagged 3 year old birthday girl. Definitely worth stopping by. Thanks a lot

Got the Vincent Van Dough - Some of the best pizza we've had, very fresh tasting and intense flavors. It was even good the next day (which is unusual in my experience).

Authentic, delicious and inexpensive pizzeria. The selection is small, but there is something for everyone! The prices are completely reasonable and very tasty!

Really good eats! Very busy but because it’s so popular. Super hot inside when it’s busy. But loved it.

Great food, good service and a great place to just sit and watch the cable cars go by. Found this place thanks to TripAdvisor reviews.

Dropped in on a Sunday night for some of the best pizza. Small and limited seating, more of a takeout location. Pizza toppings and cold beer, made may forget about any shortcomings on decor.

Loved the pizza at Za pizza, lots of choice. Can make your own pizza or can buy the daily flavours by the slice. Food was amazing. Was very busy when we arrived and the server was a little short with us throughout our visit.

What a great find! The pizza was great and the staff were all friendly and helpful. We immediately felt like part of the family.

The title says it all. I live a few blocks away, so eat or order from here frequently. My favorite topping is the sweet sausage. Great to pick up an extra large slice for lunch or a whole pie for a couple of dinners. My only complaint is the difficulty in ordering. I wish you could place an order on their web site as the phones can be very difficult. I recommend calling early in the afternoon and then requesting a specific delivery time.

Super huge cheap pizza super tastey free delivery Don't go here to sit down and eat it's a bit crowded and busy. I'd get some slices to go!

Massive fresh homely pizza served to a backdrop of classic rock and roll tunes and craft beers. The pizza was so fresh and tasty I want more.

After a quick check on trip adviser located this place in close proximity to our hotel, although fairly small it was packed but our order was taken quickly. Fresh pizza cooked perfectly, tasty ingredients and huge. Two pizza's easily fed our group of eight

We visited Za Pizza on a Sunday evening and although there are only a few tables inside they were all busy but we were luckily seated within a few minutes. We opted for a pizza slice ($4-6 each) and shared a small salad. The meal for 4 of us came to $30 plus tip (we were only drinking chilled tap water). The pizza slices were large and tasty and the salad excellent. The place is popular with the locals as there was a big trade for takeaway. The service was excellent and I’d recommend the stroll up from Fisherman’s Wharf (where we were staying) as the views back on Alcatraz and Golden Gate are great as well as passing the top of Lombard street.

Grabbed a slice of pizza for lunch at the shop. It was just okay. Nothing to write home about. The slice had an odd cornmeal texture to the bottom of the crust which I did not care for. The ratio of sauce to cheese was off. There definitely was not enough sauce on this slice. When reheating a slice, the staff should take special care not to burn the cheese. The cheese was burnt! 😖

First day at SF and we went to ZA, and our was a great choice. The place is great, the owner/s (I'm guessing the own this place - sorry I didn't ask) are very positive and full of jokes. The beer is great and the process are good. Definitely a place to visit inn SF.

On our last day in San Francisco we discovered this small restaurant. We wished we had found it on our first day as we would have gone there every day for our lunch. Mine host was so interested and caring about his customers and he along with his two staff were very busy and efficient creating their masterpieces. Beer was available on tap and that was really good too.

really tasty neighborhood pizza with friendly staff, loved it and went back for more on our last day!

Just stopped off at Za Pizza on my way to Lombard Street, and my my it was worth the stop!! The pizza was delicious and the service was warming and lovely.

We came across Za after a day of walking the hills of SF and it was a great find! We could smell the delicious pizza before we even saw the front door. We each had a different slice of pizza, and two different local beers, and all of it was amazing! Hope to be back soon!

Really good pizza and place, the attention its not the best but the pizza worth it, nice pictures at the walls

My family had a great meal here. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The kids got paper to draw artwork for the wall on whilst they were waiting for their pizza. The pizzas were really nice and I would recommend coming here.

My boyfriend and I were making our way up to Lombard St and saw ZA Pizza and decided to stop in. The staff was very friendly and the pizza was delicious. We are from NY and love pizza. Would highly recommend! Prices weren’t bad either. I’ve paid about the same price for a smaller slice of pizza!

You can sit in or take out here. They sell Pizza by the (large) slice at around $5/$6 per slice. For our kids a slice was enough. You can mix and match flavours.

We had a delicious pizza for affordable price. The place os very crowded só If you don't want to wait for a table you can order and pick up later.

Very informal, but artsy, which I love. Went there with my mom. We shared a medium pizza, which they made without cheese (vegan) for me. It was delicious, would love to go again.

We ate here after reading the reviews on trip advisor. The pizzas really are delicious! Big and fresh. If you like a really casual setting, with loud hip hop music playing, you'll probably enjoy eating in there if you can get a seat!

What a great find this was.... Very friendly and the most delicious pizza we’ve had in a long time. Portion are huge so 3 medium pizza’s would be more than enough for 5 hungry adults! We will definitely go back - 10/10

Went to this pizza place based on reviews. Firstly would have passed by if I had not read reviews as small place. Looks basic inside with limited seating and a couple of basic tables outside. However the pizza was excellent. You can a whole pizza or by the slice with what is on the board. Staff friendly. Someone passing who is born and bred San Franciscan said it is the best pizza in SFO! Definitely worth a visit and great value for money.

The line out the door was our first indication....it's a true hole in the wall. The pizza tastes like what I imagine pizza tastes like in Italy. Excellent sauce, quality dough, fresh ingredients. The Caesar salad didn't have much taste but I don't think many people go there for salad. They sell by the slice, nice option.

Fabulous pizza...Great choice, really tasty....Best pizza we've ever eaten (and my husband is half Italian!!), very friendly and helpful service. Sat in, had a few drinks...a lovely meal.

We had a wonderful lunch here today. The owner was super friendly. When he learned we were visiting San Fran, he made several suggestions for things to do and places to see. Wonderful conversation along with our own “made to order” pizza that hit the spot. The crust is fabulous! Za is in a great location. You can watch the trolley pass by on the street and it’s a close walk to Lombard St. Don’t miss out!

This is fine pizza place, a bit heavy handed on the garlic, but great quality...order a pizza (hold the garlic) and enjoy........great owner, somewhat aloof staff, but a go to on Hyde....

Why is it that the simple things in life can be some of the best things in life? Frills and hype don’t necessarily equal greatness. We sure found that to be the case at “Za Pizza.” Either their pizza/people combo beckons you here or you simply pass right on by their humble establishment. I counted three tables and three barstools inside, two tables outside, and exactly one television. Yeah, if you’re here, you’re here strictly for the pizza and the people. Not a bad combo though, right? This place just overflows with genuine local vibe, so no posers, please. Be real or be gone (my words, not theirs). Our server was super friendly and provided great advice about an adventure we are planning for later on this trip (stay tuned!). While I was attempting to secure one of the aforementioned tables outside, he was apparently chatting it up with my wife inside. When he met me outside he said he didn’t realize the weather was so nice today and that I must have brought the nice weather with me from San Diego. When I asked how he knew where I am from he said, “Your daughter told me when I met her inside.” Yeah, I will literally NEVER live this down. 🤦♂️ As much as we enjoyed his company, we planned our visit mostly ‘cuz of the (piz)”Za.” That thin crust was just so light and seemed to nearly yield a “crunch” with each bite. We don’t often include pics of pizza crust, but felt compelled to do so this time. Although we customized our “Za”, they also offer a set menu of pizza by the slice options if you’re in a hurry (or traveling solo). Come for the crust, stay for the people (or vice versa). Just get here if you’re near Russian Hill. And that’s…Henry’s Take. #sanfranciscopizza #russianhillpizza

I had researched before coming to SF and this was on our list as our two fussy boys are big pizza fans! This place absolutely hit the spot and totally lived up to our expectations. You'd pretty much miss it walking by as it looks unassuming and tiny from the outside. However the smells and queue of people will pique your curiousity. Expect to wait for a table or if you're prepared to sit outside you may get seated sooner. We sat outside as our rumbling tummies were in charge. The menu is concise, with a short list of specialities and then the option to choose your own toppings. The red potato pizza looked mouthwatering and BIG! The usual disagreement between the kids erupted over what to have but this place has the solution - slices!! Why does nowhere in the UK do this?? We each had a different slice - cheese, pepperoni, spicy sausage and vegetarian - and all were equally delicious! The bases were extra crispy due to the addition of polenta. A slice was enough to fill us all even Dad. We washed it down with a pale(yum) and amber ale(yummier). Total cost incl two cokes was about $40 - bargain! The staff are efficient, friendly and totally on the ball as you'd have to be due to the constant flow of people. Put your pretensions to one side and you will not be disappointed!

We walked here after a long flight from London because of the good reviews. It definitely didn’t disappoint. The pizza was one of the best we have ever had. You just can’t get pizza like it in the UK. We had to sit outside because it is quite small and pretty busy, but no a problem as the weather was pretty good. Worth waiting for a table!

Have been told for years to visit this place. I wish I would have done it sooner. Pizza is so delicious. I watched them chop and plate a huge salad w chicken. I will order that next time. Staff is friendly and helpful.

The pizzas we ordered are just great and beyond our expectation. The staffs are friendly and helpful. Their recommendation carried credit. We enjoyed the simple pizza meal in this busy city.

Small place, limited seating, service was awesome....he was totally helpful and on top of things!! We ordered two medium pizza's, one on the menu and one not....and a large Cesar's salad. The pizza was out of this world!! The crust is positively spectacular. Price is a little costly for a medium....but the ingriedents are all fresh and top notch, so it was worth it. Will most surely return again for more!!

Absolutely the best pizza and service. The freshest toppings and thinnest crust allowed you to enjoy without guilt. A wonderful experience. We could eat here everyday to try other choices but leaving town tomorrow.

A fairly cheap alternative in expensive San Francisco. Very tasty pizza, with free ice water. Friendly staff and lots of local customers.

The 11 hour flight to SF would have been worth it just for the visit to Za pizza. Seriously EXCELLENT food and great, friendly service :-)

I will tell people about my experience here for the rest of my life. thank you for giving me the best to work with and enjoy.

As is I sit here watching the streams of people come in while watching MLB baseball and listening to 80s alt music I am Enjoying what has now become my most favorite pizza joint in San Francisco. Seriously. Not kidding. People pour in ordering take out with as many as 5-6 pizzas. That’s how good it is. We were going to get one slice to eat but when you see the place packed and cute kids pics all over the restaurant declaring their love of Za you must order a full order and the best is that Trumer, the best Berkeley Pilsner is on tap. All I can say is you MUST!

While the pizza is ok, the restaurant itself is very small and in poor condition. The one person who seemed to be tending the bar and tables somewhat rude. Last but not least, which took my rating from average to poor was the roach climbing atop the cheese shaker. There is better, won’t return.

Just go!! Its great. Great food, good price. Fun atmosphere, staff was great. Hole in the wall joint buts it’s fun. Great for families

We went with five of us, my wife and I and our adult children. We had a wonderful evening. You can’t be in a rush because Za attracts many clients and rightfully so. The staff are fun and attentive and the salad and Pizza are fantastic. A shout out to Quiante who took great care of us. Za is a seriously fun place to have great food and fun with family and friends.

Got pizza to carry out, was slightly sceptical as is slightly pricey for a standard carry out but was so worth it! Easily one of the best pizzas we’ve ever had, even cold the next day!

Marie n I decided on Pizza on couldn't have made a better decision. We walked into Za's n luved the atmosphere. It is small but sat at the bar where Mat gave us great service along with 2 slices of Meat Lovers Pizza that covered the entire plate😃 I think we're going back tonight👍

Loved the overall experience. Quirky little place that served the best pizza we've had. Only 4 things on the menu, order by the slice or whole pie. We sat at the bar, watched a ball game and chatted with some locals and had a fantastic night. The owner chatted about Australia with us. Very friendly and well priced.

Found this place on our stroll home after a busy day cycling around the bay. Fantastic flavours and great service. The pizzas are huge and you can sit and watch the process while you wait. Definitely recommended.

Dave is super friendly and an overall great guy. Food is amazing and by far the most reasonable in Russian Hill. Would definitely go there again!

We stumbled on this gem of a place while out walking on our first day in San Francisco - and I’m so glad we did. The delicious aroma and pizza by the slice were too tempting to pass up. Despite ordering to go, the ambience and general vibe of the place was so good we decided to eat in. It has a laid back, quirky feel to it and even though it’s small it seemed to add to the atmosphere. The range of pizzas and daily specials was varied with some incredible combinations. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Despite only being in SF for five days we also made a point of going back for dinner which again didn’t disappoint. We even got our picture added to the wall !

This is a very small place, thus with limited seating. Although we got there at 8pm on a weeknight, we still had to wait 30 min to get seated - the place is extremely popular, and we were committed to it after walking up that hill. The pizza is very good (not the best, but pretty impressive). However, I still don't know what to make of the service. Despite the place being very small (albeit crowded), it took unusually long before being acknowledged for a table. At some point, there was a line-up of about 3-4 small groups inside the place waiting to know how long it would take to get a seat, and we may have waited 5-10 min before someone processed us. In the meantime, it was not clear what this server was doing and the whole thing seemed very disorganized. In any case, once we got a seat, the pizza arrived quickly, but the same server did not take great care of us, to the point where it felt rude. We still had a good experience because of the food, but this place has to work on its customer service.

An excellent stop for a great Italian pizza. Different daily slices of pizza, a great combination with a fresh draft beer or a soda in ice. A recommondation for families with kids as well as for youngsters.

There is a reason this is the #1 Rated Pizza Place in San Francisco... Great Pizza, Atmosphere, and Service!! Would definitely come back the next time we are in San Francisco

What a place! I still think of the pizza from time to time... I'm not sure if we loved the toppings because we could pick out what we wanted for ourselves or the chef was great in coordinating the flavours regardless of what we picked - probably both, and regardless, we loved it! The pizza came to us hot and fresh, and it was much bigger than two person could finish. I would have definitely gone back if I had more time in SF.

Never judge a book by its cover, that goes for this place. It’s a small place but it’s hospitality and quality of food are out of this world. Don’t think just come see for yourself. Trust me….

Enjoyed 2 large pizzas with 5 people. Tasted great! Lovely ambiance because of al the drawings on the wall

We visited Za pizza last week. TripAdvisor NEVER lets us down! The pizza was phenomenal and well worth the little walk from the wharf. The best part of the visit though was the staff! What a fun place! They are super friendly and overall make this an outstanding experience! Pizza was VERY affordable too!! Thanks!!

We visited Za on a family trip. The pizza was very good but not gourmet-style pizza one sees in other cities. We wanted to dine there, but there are only 3-4 tables in the restaurant. The staff was friendly but the music playing in the restaurant was not great for our younger kids.

It's not on the tourist trail, but this place is my favorite spot in SF and I go out of my way to stop in. Pizza by the slice, or takeout and delivery. Reasonable prices and a small, but desirable beer selection. Local restaurant people are customers, so you know the food is top notch. Discovered it by accident on vacation a couple of years ago when we hopped off a cable car at a random stop just to explore the area. The guys who run this place make everyone feel at home - it's like they know someone in everyone's hometown and can strike up conversation with you about anything.

My family (wife, daughter and I) visited Za Pizza for the first time for a late lunch. We ordered a large Caesar salad split 3 ways and it was good. We also ordered a large pizza half a Davinci (spicy Italian sausage, red & green peppers) and other half Roasted Red Potato, Roasted Garlic and Pesto. Great tasting thin crust Pizza that was crisp on the bottom, tender on top of crust and delicious toppings. A new discovery for our family that we will definitely visit again and again. Very friendly and cheerful staff. Small and modest setting but welcoming casual atmosphere. Also reasonable prices and special slices available for single servings. A must visit compared to other larger pizza establishments. Check it out, you will not be disappointed.!!!

In spite of the small place and large numbers of customer looking for either a table or for pizza to go, the service was great and we could find a table outside within 20 min. The MoMA pizza with mushrooms onions artichoke hearts and fresh basil we chose was humongous but so good we felt compelled to finish it. The onions oh so sweet, good tomato, tasty mushrooms and not soggy artichokes. The dough was also good, minding the fact the oven is not wood fired.

This is a small, no thrills pizzeria. What it lacks in décor it makes up with great tasting and mouth-watering pizza. I like it when you can see the Chef preparing the food. The staff are very welcoming and friendly and make you feel at home. The pizza is reasonably priced and exceptional value for money. The pizzas are awesome. The best pizza base I’ve tasted on a pizza. Better than in Rome! You have to check this place out. It is easy to get to. Just catch the Powell Hyde cable car to Fisherman’s Wharf. It’s just a few blocks from the Lombard Street stop. Note to check out the Clipper cards for transportation in San Francisco. It works out much cheaper. We had a large pizza. Half and half and it comfortably fed 4 adults with healthy appetites. Plus, beer and soft drinks for $50. Bargain!

After a busy 24 hours of travelling from London, cycling over the Golden Gate Bridge and visiting Alcatraz we wanted to refuel and relax with some good food - and Za certainly helped us with that! Had 3 slices between us and all were great and very generous portions. Friendly relaxed service and overall would recommend!

This place just did not live up to the reviews. The pizza was okay, but nothing to write home about, and it was the best thing about the place. The service was mediocre; probably because they are so busy. The location is a complete dive! My favorite pizza place in my hometown is a bit of a dive bar as well, but this was on a whole other level. There wasn't a chair at our table that wasn't torn up with stuffing falling out. The table was warped and didn't balance. The floor was sticky and disgusting, and the absolute worst was the state of the bathroom. There is only one toilet for everyone, and it was barely a stall that served only one at a time. I had to take my four year old to go or I wouldn't have gone near it, but when a kid has to go... Well, I've been in plenty of port-a-potties that were cleaner and had more room. We couldn't really even close the door with both of us trying to squeeze in. This might be a decent place if you can order out and live in the neighborhood, but for travelers, especially with small children, I would find somewhere else.

The pizza was absolutely delicious!!!! Such a cool little restaurant, chill vibes, good music, friendly staff, and amazing pizza!!

Don’t do food reviews much on TripAdvisor. But, if I keep coming back to Za Pizza when in SF. Then it must be good! because there are so many other choices in this city. The place has a great vibe, heaps of locals go here. They order medium, large pizza or get it by the slice. Getting a table not much of a problem, but you might have to wait a few minutes as there are only 4 tables or some seating at the bar. But the pizza is worth it. A small selection of beer and wine to go with the pizza. As usual order to much, but worth every cent. A long way for pizza, but we will be back when in SF next time. Side note: Powell & Hyde Street trolley stops just outside. Makes it easy to get too as a tourist.

I love this Russian Hill mainstay! As my title says, best pizza, period! It's popular with both locals and tourists as the Hyde Street cable car line runs right in front of it. If you are around when peaches are in season, try the peach pie. It is divine!

Stopped here after seeing Lombard Street, within walking distance. The pizza is right up there with any on the east coast and at a great price for SFO. The owner was super friendly as well. Definitely worth it!

+ Staff were all really welcoming and friendly, and after noticing we were quite indecisive explained the different options to us and made some suggestions. + Pizza was delicious! Cooked to perfection and, in my opinion, the perfect amount of toppings. Pizza base was thin and had the right amount of crisp to it, and didn't so soft/soggy.

Casual affair on Hyde St, very friendly, superb hand made pizza, excellent tap beer. Mr Brooks is an asset to this place, no mistake. I’ll definitely be back.

Za pizzas are absolutely delicious, ingredients are fresh and pizza is cooked perfect. What adds to the experience is the friendly and welcoming staff who treat you like they have known you for ever, they made us feel very comfortable and offered great service. The only dissapointing thing about this restraunt is that i live in Australia and they dont have a store in my country, there fore i have to wait to visit san Francisco agian before i can try their beautiful pizzas.

Amazing pizza. We ordered scaliano. Unfortunately we had to walk in to get the pizza as no one picked up our 8phone calls. This is the second time our calls were not taken. Recommend going but don’t expect to be able to get through on the phone with ease.

We arrived after 16 hours travelling from the uk and got a very friendly welcome. Pizza was great as was the beer and the service was spot on, wished we lived closer as we would be regulars.

Mamma mia, pizzas are good here! We had a big pizza to go for two adults and a kid. Quite enough! Fine dough, good quality filling and quantity. We waited on the spot for the preparation by drinking a beer, nice atmosphere and original decoration.

We were there with our kids and enjoyed a lot with their pizza's. You could order a large pizza with slices of different types, and it was interesting to me. To be honest, it was the best pizza that I had in the bay area. Additionally, their price is excellent!

We found this place looking for a nice restaurant to lunch something express and keep visiting the city, we were not far away and we decided to try, what a choice!! what za pizza!! We´ve been all around the world and we´ve been in a wide variety of restaurants but there are some places with soul, something special and you notice just crossing the door, this is one of this places. It´s is a small place nothing special regarding the decoration but the massive amount of draws and dedications. Just take a seat and look around you, that is awesome! People definitely appreciate the work done there and you can feel it. The service is top, this guys are great and the pizza well worth to drive/walk there. One of the best, if not the best, pizza I´ve eat ever. They have combos of slide of pizza + drink and it´s super cheap. I keep it in my favourites for our next visit to SF! Best wishes from Madrid (Spain) to all the Za Pizza crew.

We had a great lunch. Buzz went out of his way for us. The food was great. The beers was good. All in all a great lunch

Their thin crust pizzas, with loads of toppings and different combinations, rival the best of New York City. This convenient pizza joint in the Russian Hill neighborhood is only 3 blocks from the top of Lombard Street and it is one of the most affordable dining options in the area, without having to go down to Polk St. to search for other eateries.

Came here due to reading all the great reviews and it didn’t disappoint. The pizza was tasty, full of toppings and a good size. We couldn’t make up our minds, so had half and half-recommend doing this. This isn’t the place you come for a fine dining experience, but if it’s good food you want then I highly recommend it.

This is the best pizza I've had in a long time! I tried the Van Damme. It was tasty and not greasy! It is a must try in San Francisco.

Za Pizza is an unassuming little pizza shop on the hillside. Inside you will find a few tables, a bar, and a lot of friendly people. The owner is particularly personable, and can often be seen chatting with guests. The pizza is very good. All of it is made with an amazingly light thin crust, with a delicious crispy bottom and chewy on the inside. There are not a lot of menu options if you’re just getting a slice, but all are delicious. For anyone who loves thin crust pizza, this is the place to go.

I have been coming to Za's for years: tasty pizza, a simple salad, what more do you want? Menu not big but prices good, nice neighborhood feel.

A day tour by foot brought us here. A small pizza place with a few tables inside and a few outside. The atmosphere is inviting and was a great mom & pop pizza joint. A slice of Pizza was as big as your head! It was AMAZING! I would go again!

We ordered pizza and salads for a class today. Brooks made sure we had just the right amount, delivered it right on time and everything tasted great. Thanks!

Like a thin pizza? Flavorful tasty toppings & light perfect crust. I liked the crumbly sausage topping. Most enjoyable was the staff, very happy and friendly. A quaint neighborhood vibe, loved it!

Called in for an early dinner after a massive walking day in SF. Great food and service. Affordable family dining. Fun to warch the cable cars go by. Best to be off peak, as seating is limited.

A tiny place you could easily walk past, we were recommended here by friends. We went in and were made very welcome by the owner, who explained how their pizza was made and then menu options. Had a huge slice of pizza which filled us up and had a wonderful crispy base. Certainly not the usual pizza we get at home ,so very enjoyable and the artwork on the walls was very interesting too.

I don't like thin crust pizza typically that much ..but .but..this place is pretty darn good. I went with a slize of the: Olive Oil $6 - Baby Spinach, roma tomatoes and feta cheese And I have to say that I'm a big fan. The taste was very good , flavorful and filling. Large slice in terms of quantity as well. The service here was top notch as well and you feel a very neighborly "Cheers" like atmosphere where everyone knows your name. Perhaps it's the location in a residential neighborhood. But the employees are very welcoming and even said goodbye when I left in a very friendly tone to a complete stranger which is cool and not typical.

Great place -- always offer options by the slice -- creative toppings but not crazy ones -- a truly friendly owner who welcomes the impromptu art work of the kids who come in

Saw this from the trolly just past Swensens. Is a small location but your part is the neighborhood here. It’s the Cheer’s is pizza. We watched at least 20 deliveries go out the door while we ate. Side salad was amazing and the pizza didn’t disappoint! The large pizza is more than enough for 3.

The team is funny and very nice. Since the pizzas are very good as well, it’s definitely a place to go.

I live in this neighborhood and when the smell of hot 'Za wafts my way, I can't help but want to drop everything and eat! Pro tip: the Caesar salads are GREAT (and huge), so split a large chicken Caesar and a piece of pizza (also huge!) on a date and have one of the tastiest, cheapest meals for two in the city!

Good pizza. Cute place. Draft craft beer. Very friendly, pleasant folks. Nice place to sit and enjoy a meal. Two small sidewalk tables in addition to indoor tables and bar seating.

Walking around at night and stumbled across this gem. The restaurant was packed. Was able to walk up and get a slice quickly. Reasonable price. Pizza was excellent, got the basic cheese to benchmark. Would defiantly come back.

The restaurant is tiny. You cant swing a cat in there, but they sure do churn out a lot of great pizza. We went and queued outside for a while and chatted with other folk also queing to get in. it was worth the wait. We would never have found the restaurant if it wasnt for Tripadvisor. I would definitely make the effort to go there.

We stopped here while walking around San Francisco and what a wonderful find. It is a local pizza place, with a casual relaxed atmosphere. They have a white board with the specials, and you can see into the kitchen. Reasonable prices, kid friendly (we sat next to a family with young children who were coloring and enjoying their pizza). We ordered the protesto pizza with potatoes and roasted garlic. Delicious! Would go back anytime.

Little hole in the wall place that is incredibly busy with the best fresh pizza you can buy. Take the time to eat in and enjoy the hustle and bustle of this great pizza joint!

I don’t think I’ve ever been to a place so welcoming before. They bend over backwards to talk to you and serve you. And...the food is fantastic!!! The garden salad, Monday special, and cheese slice were all delicious. It’s so easy to get to...just ride the Powell-Hyde cable car and ask to get off on Green street. Highly recommend!

So small and inconspicuous from the outside, we were all the more enthusiastic that we discovered this pizzeria in Russian Hill. Inside, a wall full of beautiful pictures painted by children of the pizzeria, the owner and the staff, on the other wall beautiful Bay Area pictures painted and signed by a local artist. There is very, very delicious pizza if you want two different halves too, if you can't decide on one. The prices are absolutely fair, the service great because very familiar and super friendly. On our second visit, I bought one of the autographed pictures, and when you look outside at the passing cable cars, you think Steve Jobs has risen and is bringing the delicious pizza to your table personally. Thank you for this great experience.

We ordered and then walked back to the hotel and they delivered for free in a timely manner. Pizza was lovely and staff very friendly. Would totally recommend

Great sauce. Very good crust, although there’s a lot of flop. Little to no grease. Good cheese. A lot of pizza style options.

Small hole in the wall place .With some of the best Za we have ever had . Good quality fresh ingrediants, friendly service. And a huge slice for 5 bucks . Plus cold beer on tap . What more could you ask for :)

This tiny little restaurant packs a big punch when it comes to great tasting pizza! There isn’t a lot of space for seating but you can also carry it out. You can buy pizza by the slice or order your own pizza. We sat and watched them make pizza after pizza and it was pretty cool to watch. We really loved the crust which is made with a lot of Parmesan cheese-and perfectly crispy. Really great pizza and friendly quick service. Don’t miss out on this great little place.

This pizza was good. The delivery order was on time, however, it was a bit of a pain to get connected to them on the phone. The pizza was hot. The crust was delicious and the pesto sauce is delicious too.

We sat at the counter and enjoyed a half and half medium pizza and a couple of glasses of the french red. Great food brilliant atmosphere and were never rushed along considering we were sat right on the counter and the size of the place!! We would definitely come back if we are in San Francisco again anytime soon!!

The pizza is good, but it did not blow us away. The dough is thin and crispy with nice texture (they add some extra flour for the texture), but the tomato sauce is lacking seasoning. The toppings are pretty „american“ but still very good.

Amazing place with very tasty pizzas and very friendly service. If you walk down from Market Street all the way here, you can also enjoying a beautiful see of San Francisco

This place was discovered by chance during a stroll in the heart of Russian Hill in SF Quite varied menu of pizza toppings and for SF was moderatley priced, so we gave it a go. Very nice staff and a total local spot but treated these two tourists just as nice. Limited drink menu but if its red wine in a carafe, who cares. We order the potato. garlic special with pesto, that sounded weird but was oh so yummy. It’s cheesy, tangy, and completely rich and decadent, but if you try it you’ll want it again and again.

This is an absolute hidden gem and should be in the SF Top 10. Its got a magic atmosphere, super friendly owners, great beer and most importantly, brilliant thin crust pizza. It's places like this that make travel writing all worth it. A little jewel in Russian Hill

2 visits to SF, 2 visits to Za Pizza! Enjoy the food a lot, best pizza I had in a long while! It has a bit of a rushed atmosphere but it suits the setting. Enjoyed it! Next visit, again on the list!

We stumbled upon this pizzeria after a long day of enjoying San Fransisco. It is very cosey, the walls are filled with funny drawings about how great this pizzeria is. We wanted to order one pizza per person, but where quickly advised by the waiter this would not be a good idea. The pizza’s here are huge and are meant to be shared by the entire table. We had 2 pizza’s four 6 and had to give up the fight! Greatly recommended.

Great place. Fairly rough and ready but the food, beer and service was excellent. We also got speaking with a couple who gave us some other great restaurant tips.

Really tasty pizza slices and great value - only a few mins walk from top of Lombard st. V friendly staff. Recommend for a quick bite
Tasty pizza
This place is great. Great food, at good prices. Fun atmosphere and the staff was great. Recommended!
