Nice relaxed environment and good food

The ‘seafood stew’ was excellent - fresh, perfect lance of seafood and broth. Limited number but good Italian reds by the glass. Best of all was the service.

Italian restaurant in the Donatello Hotel

By servis |

Happened to find this hotel restaurant one Sunday night after Union Square shopping. It is in the Hotel Donatello on Post St. I wanted pizza and this was not on their dinner menu but the owner gave me a lunch menu and I ordered pizza, this was excellent and he added extra vegetables. The Rigatoni was course, pasta doughy and the sauce very ordinary. My main complaint is the price, entrees not too bad but they inflate the price for all the extras, tiny caesar salad $16, small beet salad $16, ice tea $6, Dessert $12 or $14, drinks $14. The bill was $160 for 3 people, too expensive for a typical mid range San Francisco restaurant. They do provide jazz music but thus did not start til after 8 PM, at least they could give you decent portions for the salads. Very tight.

Great service, great pasta

By Christine C |

My pasta was perfectly cooked al dente and the sauce was delightful. Service was excellent. Atmosphere was lovely. Great for a romantic dinner.

Fab find.

My sister Sandy and I found this place, looking for brunch. It was just after 12 noon so fairly quiet. Lovley live jazz and the food was very good. Michael our waiter looked after us and as we were sharing a couple of the dishes he did this in the kitchen, a nice touch. The bread is so light and tasty, a great crust. We had the fig toast with ricotta to share and the Italian eggs Benedict, the hollandaise and a real fresh lemon zest to it and the crispy Russell sprouts with poached egg, crispy pancetta and balsamic glaze, the flavours were stunning. Thank you , would definitely recommend.

Very Good, Bring your wallet

Two (call)-cocktails, $39.00. Carpaccio, $19.00, nice. Spaghetti with meatballs and parmesan, $28.00. OK. Seafood soup, very, very good, $36.00, made with fresh fish, not yesterday's left-overs. Bread pudding, Nicely done. $12.00. We ordered a Napa Etude Pinot, @ $85.00, (retail, $30.00), great wine but a penurious mark-up. Post-dinner Grand Marnier was $15.00 each. A very nice dinner, but try 10 dozen San Francisco restaurants downtown with the same or greater food for a more reasonable price.

A couple of good dishes with a very nice waiter but bad manager!

By RetiredKJ |

I had the beef rib dis and my brother had the soup! Very good! The other four people in our party indicated their meals were not satisfactory! Manager came up and asked us to leave because we were taking too much time! Really…. $700 bill and too much time? Don’t go to this place and expect to enjoy the time! Wow!

Jazz and dinner

By AnitaNewportBch |

Italian cuisine and jazz performance restaurant - Indian owner. International! We were surprised and happy to find a place with music and food so close to Union Square. The host was warm and helpful and made suggestions on the menu, other patrons were enjoying the music and a few couples got up to dance. We enjoyed the evening, the music and food and people watching. It was an interesting place although the food was good, but not excellent.

Underwhelming food

By TennesseeGypsee |

Very overrated. Service was friendly. Food was very underwhelming. $1000 for a party of five. Not everyone was drinking. Be forewarned: if you ask for sparkling water at the beginning of dinner they will keep it coming without asking. So $40 for four bottles. Appetizers were good. Entrees were not. Angolotti should be soft and pillow-like. Not tough. The only thing tougher was the accompanying shrimp. They couldnt even be cut with a knife. The veal was not good. Two other members of our party got pasta. It was fine. But, again, $1000?!!! Would not return.

Dinner in San Fran while on vacation

By Chuck U |

We are on vacation from NY and did a lot of research to pick our restaurants. Tonight we decided to skip the restaurant we had reservations (yes we cancelled our reservation) and stay close to our hotel. Typically we do not pick restaurants in hotels but tonight my wife decided to do so and we at glad we did. Dinner at Zingari was wonderful. Staff and owner we very attentive and the jazz music in the background was very nice. Both the appetizers and main courses were very good and the wine selection was extensive. We would strongly recommend you give this restaurant a try, very good Italian food.

Quality not matching price

By C1TYgirl |

We were being seated in a room separated from the Jazz dining hall. It's cozy but missing the whole experience of being in a live Jazz restaurant. Just to make sure to make your reservation where to be seated specifically to manage expectation. Food is tasty but not special, sure can name other restaurants with better taste in that price range. The restaurant is located inside hotel Donatella, hence disabled accessibility is an advantage, especially in San Francisco. Service is good, not feeling superb. Overall experience - overpriced, overrated.

Zingari zing and jazz

By Sue C |

Found this place right by our hotel purely by chance and made a reservation. Paid the extra $10 per person to have the jazz experience which was most enjoyable. Had the formaggio halloumi with salsa and pesto to start - very nice - then fettuccine Zingari and crab ravioli. Large portions. Very tasty. Add a good bottle of Italian wine and it made for a very good evening.

Please don't eat here

By love2stitch |

What a disappointment. It took us over an hour to be served. The owner/waiter was over extended and arrogant. The soda was $5 and the glass was barely over half full. I wanted my pizza extra well brown, nope can't have it that way, it will get charred. He wouldn't allow me to tell him that I like it that way. If you want to be treated poorly, you'll love it. Otherwise, go somewhere else.

Do not fall into this trap.

By Arnaldo G |

We came here to relax and have a good time during our stay in San Francisco. But the presence of an unfriendly and almost menacing waiter along with an exorbitant bill (with 20% mandatory tip plus 10% tax and more 10% sf mandate) really ruined our night. Our worst experience in San Francisco.

Very Loud

By Napafoodlover |

This a a spot where business people take their clients...we were seated right next to the live music...our fault for not asking for a different table, the place was packed! Conversation was impossible. Food was just soso...would not go back.

Very disappointed

By YCBAR22 |

We had reservations for six people (two kids, four adults) at 8pm. We finally got seated at 8:35...good on the staff, they gave us 4 glasses of wine for free for the delay. Once seated, it took 20 minutes for them to take our order. We got our appetizers at 9:30, but our entrees didn’t come until 10:00 - a full two hours after our original reservation. All of that wouldn’t have been so bad if we were at least checked-on in between, but we were largely ignored for most of the night with no explanation as to why there was such a long delay until we complained. The food was just okay, especially considering the service which left much to be desired this evening. Lamb chops were well done when asked to be medium rare. Truly, we aren’t that picky, and I’ve never written a review before, but this needed to be posted. We won’t be coming back.

Wonderful flavors

By Expert Traveler |

This restaurant is right across from the JW Marriott. I don’t with coworkers and we split a lot of dishes. The octopus was great, the pasta was also very good. Our server kept the drinks flowing. We even enjoyed dessert. I did not experience the jazz, we just did the dining. But the dining was very good. I recommend

Mediocre Food and GREAT Service!!

By Mzkedghill |

My husband and I ate here on 9/19/2023. The restaurant was nice, clean and a great ambiance. My original order was the saltimbocca Di Pollo (chicken) but when it arrived it was EXTREMELY overcooked, dry and NOT juicy. I advised our waiter, "Ates" and he was very understanding and accommodating. He recommended the "Risotto Al Salmone Affumicato" which was very good. The Jazz music was not too good rather and I would not classify all those songs or the music jazz. It was two men playing instruments and singing and they were over singing and over playing songs where it was not necessary. When the guy sat us he told us we had to pay $15.00 each to be seated for the music which apparently was not true. Any way the highlight was the service and "ATES" was simply amazing and attentive. If you still decide to go I hope he is your server and ask his recommendation because he was spot on for recommending my second dish.

Outstanding and exceptional service

By Joel Z |

Second visit. Excellent food especially tiramisu dessert (one of the best ever ordered) and seafood cheese filled pasta special osso buco. Unusually personal experience for San Francisco's Union Square area. A great dinner before the nearby theaters.

Good food and jazz!

By GiantsFan1986 |

I usually am not a big fan of hotel restaurants, but this one was worth it! Service was excellent, there was a nice selection, very good food and the Jazz was very good! They had a piano and a sax playing jazz and while the piano player was good, the sax player stole the show! He was excellent! I had the rigatoni salsiccia, which was very good and when we were unsure about an appetizer, they made up a plate with different selections...will definitely be back!!!

Outstanding Experience at Zingari

By Marcia R. |

Came here with my honey for a special occasion and it was lovely. First off, this place is absolutely gorgeous!! Great wine list and service (grazie Stefano!). We had the brussels sprouts appetizer (yum!) and a moderately-priced bottle of excellent merlot. The jazz playing across the restaurant made for the perfect mood. And the food...(drool). I had a pappardelle & short rib dish that was out of this world. I am allergic to seafood, but the scallops were done to perfection according to my bf. We were pretty full, but could not resist trying the cannoli, which has always been my favorite. I cannot believe that they make these in house- outstanding! We took our time over dessert and cappuccino (nobody rushed us) and then went for an evening walk near Union Square. Overall, a perfect and romantic setting for our special day. We'll definitely be back!!

A little bit of Italy in San Francisco

By Luzmarie G |

Fascinating restaurant at the Donatello Hotel, delicious food perfectly cooked by a chef with Italian style and taste. Cozy atmosphere, first class treatment. Gentle and friendly service. Reasonable prices for the quality of the dish.

Happy Hour is a happy experience

By patentesquire |

Was in town for a conference at Westin St. Francis next door so stopped in to Donatello to grab an early meal since I was still on eastern time. Great idea. I hit Zingari bar happy hour at the right time on a Sunday night. Ordered house cab and then Brüssel sprouts and margarita pizza. Plenty of food. Happy hour prices. Fresh tomato slices on pizza a nice addition. Sprouts grilled very nicely. Bar tender very nice and good service. Owner was there and introduced himself. Very nice. I recalled eating here in Main Room years ago. All told would definitely come back. Great food and nice small bar with TV and not too noisy. Good experience.

Designed for a one time visit only

By Anilin3 |

I went there on Christmas day with my husband and my family. We had an 8:30pm reservation, which was delayed for 45 minutes because of what the manager (maybe? she is asian) said "this happens every year" and yet when we booked, they have an every 15 min slot reservation. Me and my husband were upset already with this issue and i told him to stay solely just because i knew i will be charged $120 by open table if i cancelled (eventhough the asian lady said she will made sure guests that cancelled that day will never be charged anything). But for her to be able to actually scold guests for asking " when is my table ready?" i doubt i will even get my $120 back For a restaurant who claimed "this happens every christmas day every year," obviously they didn't do a good job at handling it Finally we got our table. We were served by 2 male servers ( i assumed one is assistant server maybe). One of them took notes on our orders while the other grab us our drinks and bread. It took about 20 minutes for our appetizers to arrive, much to our dismay. I noticed the family across our table had complained about their main course not even being served after an hour of waiting, were pissed and asked straight for the dessert, paid and leave. Half an hour after we finished our appetizers, i actually had to ask for my main course (i noticed the server had probably about 8 tables in our area and some even already half eating their meal) so it shouldn't take long for our main course to be served anyway. 10 minutes later, they FINALLY ARRIVED and was not even hot anymore, barely even warm At around 10:15-10:30 pm, finally our desserts being served. at this point, we dont even enjoy our food anymore after being famished for a long period of time, bad service, and bad food. It was close to 11:00 pm i think when i asked for the cheque, paid and waited for the receipt to come back when suddenly this one uneducated - unmannered - rude man suddenly removed my wallet, my phone from the napkin (i lay the napkin flat on my side of the table and put my stuffs on it), WITHOUT ASKING MY PERMISSION and took the napkin away, much to my anger. for someone who looks more polished than the other waiters, obviously his attitude is far from polished Our impression? For a restaurant who claim to be a fine dining, clearly education is much needed from the hostess (who even dared to yell at customers), waiter (who would pretend that it is not their fault when service is wrong) and this polished looked gentleman (who doesn't even know what manners are). and the worst part is, all of them think that it is normal for them to be rude and giving bad service just because the restaurant was busy. Even people around our table complained at one point I dined at restaurants before. the real fine dining one? would NOT even think of doing what they did to customers. Zingari? Just a fine dining in name only.

Drinks jazz and good food

By dfz-cc |

Found this all place inside Donetello Hotel just strolling aroun union square.. we were starving from long flight and turned down airport food... so at 3:30 we got drinks and great appetizer of saturated Brussels sprouts and smother polenta.. the proprietor manager custom ordered the Brussels sprouts to be gluten free and they were amazing.. we made reservation to come back for jazz. Osobucco did not disappoint.. wild Boar was not gamy and all spices and ingredients were perfect.. Nick or server was quick , knowledgeable and professional. Good wines too Jazz was very very good.,, very small venue so go at 6:30 and eat and order slow so coffee and desert will be with jazz accompaniment... only complaint.... it was cold the bar top the room didn’t ever really warm up!!! My wife went to Macy’s and bought a scarf.. be prepared..

Disgrace!

By Marije_C |

This restaurants charges you $ 50 per person cancellation fee, for a reservation which was cancelled within 24hours!! This is a absolutely disgrace!

A Good Restaurant in a Good Location

By LRA45 |

The food is fresh and well prepared. The atmosphere is inviting and the service friendly. We have visited this restaurant on several occasions and it has proven to be a consistently good eatery.

Great Food and Service

By Gene K |

Very nice Mother's Day dinner. The citrus ricotta ravioli with strawberry marinna sauce is inventive and tasty; the ahi tuna my wife had was great. Friendly service but can be a bit slow as the restaurant gets busy.

Upscale Italian Restaurant

By Robert H |

We were looking for a place close to our hotel for a pre-concert dinner, and chose to re-visit Zingari. The service was gracious and efficient. I had scallops, and my wife had salmon. Both did not disappoint. Several dishes accommodated our gluten-free diet needs; multiple gluten-free choices are always a plus. Following an awesome concert at the San Francisco Symphony, we returned for a delicious dessert before calling it a night, pausing to listen to the live jazz for a few moments.

Excellent

By JoAnn Y |

We came to the City on a Sunday night looking for some holiday cheer and a nice meal. We decided to try Zingari because we were found the prospect of enjoying some live jazz music appealing. The restaurant is a hidden gem. We ordered the Brussels sprouts and meatballs as appetizers, both were delicious and perfectly prepared. The filet mignon was prepared with a rich, tasty sauce with spinach and mashed potatoes. The service was on pace with what you would expect from a restaurant with a focus on musical entertainment--they didn't rush but it wasn't super slow either. The pianist and vocalist were quite talented; a half hour of solo music from the piano followed by passionate singing accompaniment. Overall a very satisfying experience.

Nothing to write home about

By Asha1234 |

A lovely looking restaurant, but make sure you ask to be seated in the jazz area as we were put in the quiet area to start which wasn’t what we had wanted. Felt the waiters were a little snooty which is unfortunate as the restaurant isn’t as up-market as it’s trying to be. Food was okay, nothing to write home about. Expensive. Didn’t enjoy the menu ‘telling’ me not to photograph my food - it’s up to me what I photograph. Again a little snooty and pretentious. Wouldn’t go back or recommend it to a friend, reckon there’s much better out there!

Poor experience

By bebe |

Poor service, poor food, we were the only customers and still had to wait for the drinks, for the food, for the check, for everything.

no reservation but welcomed like royalty

By scottabrown68 |

Staying at Zeppelin next door which was overpriced, walked in here for live jazz with super friendly service. At waiters recommendations we had specials which were amazing, and a selection of sharing starters he arranged. Clean plates and full bellys all round. Great selection of wines too.

Casual business dinner with music

By Johan |

Excellent Italian food, for that they get a 5. The band needed a little inspiration , and for that they het a 4.

Price gouging and unfriendly management

By Philip |

Yes - this was during JPM but (1) charging $50 per person for lunch is indefensible (2) showing no interest in doing what is reasonable (we had people from our table who were with us for just 20mins (we had not even been asked for our order) and then joined another table at the same restaurant) but management insisted on following the letter of THEIR rule (yet several tables open) and that same $50 will be charged now at a second table. Just obnoxious. Bottom line - it is bad business to gouge people because you can. There is the right thing to do and your moral compass should kick in. As they can’t do the right thing. One assume that they can’t bring themselves to do the right thing in other aspects of their business. Avoid this place. Our server was good - but really embarrassed by the whole thing. Management need to take a long hard look in the mirror.

Horrible place, horrible service and horrible managers

By Mary Ann |

I went to this restaurant last week with my family. OMG!!! We went there because it was closed to our hotel but we should have looked at the reviews beforehand... that place is beyond bad... the service is rude, very rude and the owner, an aged man was sooo unpleasant and snobby. I really do not recommend this restaurant if you want to have a pleasant evening. The food is also average to our taste.

Extremely disappointing

By AT1 |

We had high hopes for this restaurant. It started well, we received a warm welcome. We chose the mixed starter for two and the tomato and mozzarella for my daughter. Both were very good. My husband and I then had the mixed fish stew and my daughter had the spaghetti with meatballs. This is where it went downhill. The restaurant got busier and we asked for the salt and pepper because the fish stew was extremely bland. The spaghetti and meatballs was average. It was as if we had insulted them by asking for the salt and pepper. We didn't see another waiter until they cleared the table. We poured our own wine and were so disappointed at the service. We didn't bother to hang about for a desert. @ $270 we expected more. Certainly for the money there are better places to eat..

Great service, real Italian food

By NormG1 |

We were seated as far away from the music as it is possible to get at a table for two by the window. It's a perfect location to enjoy the food with just quiet jazz playing as background music. Our waiter was helpful and always appeared when needed. I got introduced to a new Italian food term - Cicchetti - meaning appetizers. I had the polenta, which I highly recommend. Our main courses were also perfectly prepared - try the ossobuco di chingiale. It's a real Italian dish with a great deep flavor. There was an adequate choice of wines by the glass. I enjoyed the Nero d'Avola.

Best Italian meal in a long time.

By mamiab |

First night meal in San Francisco. One of the best Italian meals we have had in a long time. Great food, very cosy atmosphere and great service with a good price. Highly recommend

Its all about passion

By Robert95765 |

Staying at the Donatello and eating and drinking at Zingari must be one of the most pleasant things we have done in quite awhile. It was so nice to chat with the owner and see what real dedication to service and quality is all about. A great wine list. Spectator Award!, and love for the food and drink was very evident!!!

A Quiet Dinner

By Hardrocker8888 |

This was our first time eating here. Even though there was a band playing in the other room, our dinner was nice and quite. The food was very tasteful. The service was exceptional.

Great traditional Italian with a flare

By jblmdmba |

You can find all of your favorites in each course. Some special extras too: octopus carpaccio was a surprise and quite tasty with their special lemony dressing on the accompanying garden salad. The Ossobucco was boar but far from that in flavor - much less fatty than others I have had and a hearty rice and mushroom cover. All the pasta dishes seem fresh in taste and selection and I also love bed the chocolate mousse desert. The service was prompt and very friendly.

Flavorful pasta with attentive staff

By Melaney68 |

Our server was excellent and our dining experience was leisurely. Each of us tried a different pasta dish and celebrated a small family reunion with a bottle of wine. The bread pudding was o.k. but not what I had hoped for. There was a pianist playing in a separate room. The layout of the restaurant is interesting because there are many small rooms. Be sure you are comfortable with the menu prices before you decide to pick up the check!

Perfect dinner

By Mary L |

My husband and I had a memorable night. The restaurant had gone through a transformation and brought in a new head chef who has added a lot to the menu. Daily house made pasta that will make you come back for more. Every dish was delicious. A beautiful beet salad has polanta croutons that were such a great surprise. The space is elegant and the local jazz musicians providing live music makes it so special. The staff is top notch and we were so well taken care of. We will be back!!

Way too pricy

By Jonas L |

Food wasn't great. Live music that was below average. I had a pasta and a glass of wine. $91 first, but they deducted $15 for the music when I asked about it. It still felt like a ripoff. Max $40 worth. Its also cold due to the doors are always open.

Always Reliable and Delicious

By Frederick G |

Well prepared and well though out presentations- always reliable - a little noisy at times but the service is excellent and everyone is attentive.

Pricey

By Wan.C |

Pay high price, below average food, there is no presentation on the plate especially on the deserts. Friendly staffs not professional, added 20% tips without let you know. I have party of 4 celebrate birthday dinner. It is embarrassing add gratuity on the high end restaurant. I have been so many high end restaurant never happened.

Upscale Italian style restaurant with lovely food

By tash778 |

My partner and I went to this restaurant the night we landed in San Francisco after 24 hours of flying as it was attached to the hotel we were staying at and as we were jet lagged and tired we thought it would be the easiest option. We planned to quickly eat and then head to bed, however we ended up staying for a couple of hours and ate 3 courses. The food was delicious. I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs and it was probably the best I have ever had. The meatballs were so tender. Lovely staff lovely food! Would recommend and would return again if in the city!

Had been here before- was great, this time terrible...won't be a third time.

By Richard W |

5 years ago we enjoyed a great dinner here with live jazz music. We wanted to share that experience with friends so booked reservations for 4 on a night with live jazz music. They now charge $15/person for the music--not bad for live music. The menu looks impressive as is the drink menu. Service was a disjointed mess from the minute we entered with a server telling us to go one place and the Host telling us something different. We finally sit down, and wait, and wait. After about 10 minutes our "server" came by to take our dinner order. We stated we desired a cocktail before ordering dinner. He did not seem to understand this or that we requested 2 separate checks for our party of 4. Finally, he started to take drink orders asking the 2 women first, turning and leaving. We had to call him back to take the remaining 2 orders. Things did not get better as the evening progressed. One of our party ordered Prosecco as a cocktail and received a glass of Chardonnay wine, which the server said was a very expensive type of Prosecco which clearly had no bubbles in it. We are not stupid and this felt demeaning. There were clearly 2 kinds of wait staff--experienced and professional staff with years of knowledge and other, seemingly untrained and unskilled staff. The untrained seemed to be assigned this dining room with the experienced "monitoring". The pained and frustrated looks on the experienced staff told quite a story. They ran around trying to clean up the mixed up orders, missing orders, poorly cooked shrimp orders. We watched this happen to at least 4 other tables besides ours. At least it got strangers talking, sharing issues and trying to get what they ordered. I was billed for a dessert that I never received so I refused to pay for it. Finally an experienced server fixed it. How this place became such a disaster is beyond me. It needs intervention from some cable channel--"Restaurant Rescue" show. We will NEVER return and highly recommend others avoid this place. There are several very excellent places near by.

The fake worst italian in town

By Shiva |

For the price of the restaurant we did expected a certain quality. The food was made with the most basics, low quality ingredients. The pasta were five time too thick. The music was too loud. The rooftop was more like a corridor balcony. Totally disappointed. And bummed to invest that much money into such a bad experience.

Disappointed

By Silvina H |

Servers were very nice Outdoor area did not have heaters or blankets as advertised, so we had to live indoors in a cold night. Service very slow and not at 50% capacity indoors Food was mediocre. Not what we planned for out last night in San Francisco

Superb evening

By Sonia P |

My husband and I arrived in San Fran today and were feeling a little jet lagged, but made the effort to go out for dinner. The service and food were fantastic. The staff here are externally attentive - we really couldn’t ask for more. We had the filet mignon which was cooked perfectly. The maitre d kindly made suggestions on which vineyards to visit in the Napa Valley - again, just really helpful. We had a superb evening and would highly recommend it.

Awfull

For christmas eve, very expensive prices for a "cuisine" which in absolutely not gourmet. No flavor, no taste. In a word, horrible Maybe, we don't appreciated because we are used to French gastronomy.

This is an Italian cuisine restaurant and jazz bar although I expected to see live entertainment but this wasn’t the case.

Excellent for Solo Female Dining

By StephinSydney |

Some restaurants aren’t really welcoming of the ‘solo female diner’ however I highly recommend Zingari if you are on your own and looking for a first-class Italian dining experience. I was able to get a table easily without the strange stares usually associated with being a party of 1 and elegant ushered to a beautiful table by the window by a mature silver fox host who ensured my handbag had a chair and that I was attended to with all the same professionalism as the other tables. I ordered a sensational starter that the wait staff recommended, and allowed the staff to pair the wines for me. The seafood risotto was delightful, rich and just want I needed. I skipped dessert and opted for an after dinner drink in the chic little jazz bar where a pianist and bassist performed broadway favourites and popular hits for an engaged audience. The bartender was attentive and I had a perfect evening on business in San Francisco. What I also enjoyed was that this restaurant didn’t feel stuffy or pretentious although the quality of service was very high and quality of food exceptional, with a modern contemporary feel that welcomed me as a modern business traveler.

Great business party spot!!

Thank you for hosting our Pillar Legal event Sunday, March 17th at Zingari. It was a big success for us in part due to your wonderful venue and the great care taken by you and your staff with the food and drinks. Thank you!! Greg P.

Uneven Service and Food

By Jim C |

Restaurant located in the Donatello has stylish decor and an adjoining small jazz bar. There was an extensive and quite fine wine list about which the server was quite knowledgeable.Given this beginning we expected much more than we got. My wife had Mozzarella Caprese appteizer and Linguine Vongole both of which were merely passable. My artichoke appetizer was tasty but the diced pancetta contained therein was overcooked to a point beyond crisp, smaler pieces were simply inedible. The wild boar Ossobucco held some promise. The meat was moist and tender but ultimately lacked seasoning. It was served on a bed of wild mushroom risotto. I expected a lightly flavored risotto which some earthiness from the mushrooms. However the mushrooms were so few and cut so small that they imparted no flavor. The sauce simply overwhelmed whatever there was there. My place was cleared while my wife was still eating, a gaff not expected in a fine restaurant. Silverware and was removed with the appetizer dishes and not replaced until the third request after the entrees were on the table.Needless to say we skipped coffe and dessert and removed to the lounge. The hostess sat us at a table set for dinner which was fine as the table setting were quickly dealt with. However there appeared to be a dispute between she and the server who promptly ignored. After some minutes the bartender crossed the room and took our drink order. He was friendly, efficient and promptly brought our order. The two piece jazz combo was quite nice. As an aside there was acouple at an adjoing table celebrating an anniversary. After sending their meal back for the third time the wife left the table in tears. When I went to the bar to settle the bill there was the manager sitting on a bar stoll watching a sporting event. Needless to say we will not be back should we again be in SF.

An interesting Jazz venue in a hotel

By Mike W |

We tried this restaurant as we were staying at the hotel. Very small with a 3piece jazz group jammed in. Food good but not exceptional - attentive service - prices high

Great atmosphere

By Maria G |

I greatly enjoyed my potato gnocchi. The service was very good. The wine list by the glass was also well rounded an extensive. I would like to return when I am hungrier and to listen to jazz.

We went to this place without

By Lagundi |

We went to this place without any expectations, and came out utterly satisfied! The food was amazing!!! I particularly loved the Osso Buco and Pappardelle Della Nonna! To make the experience even more amazing, our server, Nick, was spectacular. He took care of our huge group (with kids), and gave us astounding recommendations. We loved the experience so much, we came back to the place for our next meal. 🙂

Excellent food, if you are ready to spend some $$$

Definitively real (not just exported and adapted) Italian style food. The risotto was delicious, while dessert could have been somewhat better. They have a very good wine list and the service was nice. Most likely will go back.

Hidden Fees Unethical cancelation

By Matthew K |

Booked a group dinner at Zingari and was later hit with a $300 cancellation fee despite canceling a full week in advance. Their written cancellation policy says cancellations made 7 days prior incur $50 per person, but the restaurant waited until late at night exactly 7 days before to send me undisclosed “minimums” and fee-heavy menu options — well after I had already requested cancellation multiple times. Then, even after confirming I would not be attending, they processed a charge anyway. This restaurant operates on hidden fees, last-minute fine print, and refusal to honor clear cancellation requests. It feels intentionally deceptive presenting normal reservations as flexible, then turning them into expensive “contracts.” If you value transparency or professionalism, avoid this place. There are plenty of honest, quality Italian restaurants in San Francisco that won’t treat guests like this.

Not good for room service

By ZProf |

We stayed at the hotel and ordered room service from Zingari. The total bill was $64 for pasta carbonara and two deserts that each consisted of two scoops of cappuccino ice cream. The ice cream was great; the pasta carbonara was average, to say it was tepid was a stretch. The food may be better when served in the restaurant, but I would not recommend ordering room service unless you enjoy paying outrageous prices for average food.

Successful business event

By Nici W |

For the second year in a row, we hosted a business breakfast for 15–20 people at the Zingari. The manager was always great to work with, and the event ran smoothly. The food was good, and the service was friendly and efficient. This year, more guests attended than expected, and the staff quickly accommodated us by adding another table. Thank you for helping make our events a success — I highly recommend the Zingari!

Delightful

By Harvey B |

Concierge at our hotel recommended this. A few of us had Italian, others went the filet route. Presentation was great, food was great, service was great, wine selection wasn't overwhelming but good choices at different price ranges. Went with a malbec that I was very happy with...

Very good cuisine

By lau_voyage |

Too bad it's a bit expensive but I think that's the price you pay for good food in San Francisco. It was really delicious and refined. Friendly staff. Good music.

Fun time at the bar with Jazz in the Background

By Robert G |

We visited in the evening for drinks and sat at the bar taking to the musicians and other guests. This is next to Union Square and is a great spot to enjoy a little downtime with a few drinks.

Great food

By Jane Costello |

This restaurant served some wonderful dishes and I was delighted with the authentic food we received.

Returning Customer

By CHRIS C |

Excellent service and menu for entertaining friends or guests from out of town. Highly recommend a selection of pasta, meat/fish dish, or simply a negroni. Joyce and the Jazz music selection Neeraj brings in truly bring the experience to the top while enjoying a good meal / drink. Great staff and experience overall 👍

Good but pricey option @ The Donatello

By Vezich |

Conveniently located if you are staying at the Donatello (Post at Mason), Zingari offers decent Italian food at a price that is probably standard for San Francisco, but it is probably not worth the trip if you are not in the area. If you feel like having Italian, there are most likely better options. Hotel offers room delivery at the Donatello, which is convenient but comes at a premium.

Beautiful Restaurant with Great Service

By Marengwara |

This is a beautiful restaurant, elegant yet unstuffy. The staff are friendly and efficient. Mr. Krishan Miglani, the Proprietor, truly delivers on his mission ("I love delivering traditional, simple food, and pairing it with quality wine," he says. "And most importantly, I love to create smiles."). I took my nieces and nephews out to their first elegant night out. We were a party of 20, majority of them were kids ranging in age 7 to 17 years old . Because most of the members in my party were so young, I felt that the usual group dining menu option was too much food for such unsophisticated palates. I sent Mr. Miglani a note telling him my situation asked him if we can modify and create a special menu for my party. Krishan responded right away telling that he is happy to work with me to create a special evening for the kids. He put us in the beautiful Florence room. He also created a beautiful custom menu for my party. The kids felt so special! The food was excellent! Proper portion. Pasta was cooked perfectly, truly representative of an authentic Italian Restaurant. Gabriel, our lead server, was so friendly and accommodating. He and his staff were pleasant the entire evening and never missed a thing. I wanted a magical and elegant holiday evening for my nieces and nephews. Krishan, Gabriel and the rest of his staff delivered above and beyond. I highly recommend this restaurant for your special celebration. Thank you, Krishan. The kids are still talking about the wonderful evening. Krishan, Gabriel and the rest of Zingari’s team helped create a lasting Happy emorable holiday experience for my family. Thank you everyone!

Nice Italian restaurant attached to our hotel

By Tommo |

This lovely Italian restaurant was located on the first floor of our hotel The Donatello. We enjoyed snacks here one afternoon with local friends which consisted of brussel sprouts and bruschetta. They have happy hour snacks and drinks in the afternoon and have jazz musicians playing each evening. Several times we listened to live music and enjoyed a drink and once had a lovely desert of bread pudding. Nice place to chill out near Union Square.

Fabulous food and service experience - business dinner for 20 people.

By Jennifer P |

Zingari owners exceeded expectations in prior to meal communication, ensuring a fabulous experience for my business meal. The menu selections were perfect, the service was outstanding and the meal was delicious.

Disappointed Food

By val462016 |

It was rated as a top Italian restaurant and we looked forward to eating there all day. The waiter was excellent and recommended a great wine for us. The Butternut Squash Soup was superb; but my lamb was over cooked and tough. My husband's seafood stew was not fresh, and, again, overdone, as well as dry. Disappointed.

Great Service, Great Food served by a Real Italian Waiter

By ArnieL707 |

Wife had the salmon and I had the Ossobuco de Cinghali Rissotto. Delicious. Great venue, particularly convenient if staying at the Donatello.

Great food and drinks along with nightly Jazz!

By Richard W |

I'm not usually a big fan of hotel restaurants, but Zingari is an exception! We reserved a table in the Jazz Club section, had great service from A-Tes---request his section! The bar and wine list were exceptional. The dinner menu was very comprehensive and our server was highly trained/experienced in both wine and dinner menu, giving accurate recommendations on each. For the intimate music experience guests are asked to make a $10 donation--what a bargain!! Of course, the band likes to receive a tip which was well worth it for our 2 1/2 hour experience!! Highly recommend you experience this gem--open to non-hotel guests also.

Overpriced, mediocre food

By Go622381 |

Heavily overpriced, small portions with mediocre flavour. Waitstaff was slow - no incentive to be better with 20% service charge added to every bill, regardless of party size. We were placed in the far back corner of a room without the live jazz music, which was one of the only reasons we came (and we couldn’t hear/see anything). Avoid this restaurant!! Highly disappointing last dinner in SF!

good food, lots of Jazz

By aagourmet |

This is the restaurant in the Donatello hotel. It has very good Italian food. I had a carpaccio with truffle oil and then ossobuco of wild boar. The wine menu was silly, with california Zinfandels literally 2.2 times the price I could get them in Ann Arbor which is another pretentious town that thinks it is better than what it is. The food here is good, the service fine, dinner for two with an entree a main and dessert and a low end wine will put you back a cool $150 to $200. But hey, you are in the chosen land of San Francisco where all tourist should be delighted to spend a weeks wages for food. (sorry with all the silicon valley types maybe a half day's wages). Of the three restaurants I visited for dinner on this trip, this was the best VALUE, especially given the creativity of the chef. For this reason I gave it a 5th star. There are better restaurants for food in SF, but I don't want to have to sell a kidney to eat there. Hence, this is highly recommended. The bar hops on the weekend and the jazz is very good.

Good but nothing special

By Shannydog |

We had good service from a very attentive waiter. The restaurant has an interesting menu and wine list. But the food was average or average plus, and expensive. We had a sampler appetizer which was good. However the entrees were disappointing. San Francisco offers many better choices than this restaurant.

It’s okay.

By Nick H |

The meal was fine. The food needed salt. We ordered the beet and burrata salad, the seafood something ravioli, and pappardelle. Oh, and bread. Nothing had flavor. Okay, so the food wasn’t great. The service, however, was pretty good. Rich was our server and did a good job. He kept things moving, was attentive and knew the menu. And he brought salt. We sat in the smallish room just to the left of the hostess station. This is a pretty good spot unless it’s warm out. I can see this room turning into a sauna. But the room is quiet, and you don’t have to hear the overbearing music. Net net, I don’t think this place is worth the money. The food is bland, the staff is good, and the whole event just feels like an inconvenience.

Subpar Christmas Eve Dinner

By Jodi Morris |

My mom loves live music, good food, and a fun location. I thought Zingari near Union Square would be perfect for Christmas Eve. It was a subpar experience. It was made worse by the fact that it was $85 pre fix only, with 20% gratuity automatically added on to the full bill. We were seated in what felt like an extra table added to the bar lounge. Staff and patrons kept hitting the back of my husband’s chair. Our waiter was MIA. A guy eventually came to take our wine order; we eventually flagged him down to ask if he could take our main order (apparently he was our waiter). I had no idea it was pre-fix—I noted after dinner that pre-fix was noted on the website, but I had booked the reservation on Open Table week’s prior and so didn’t know (my bad for not checking back beforehand). We asked for bread, because we were hungry and saw some delivered to another table—our waiter suggested we wouldn’t need bread, but would bring if he wanted him wanted to. My lamb chops would have likely been good (though not a lot of meat) had they not been drenched in heavy Gorgonzola sauce (as was my husband’s filet mignon, though not as heavily). The jazz singer started at 8pm, which would have been nice had we not been sitting right in front of the singer (it was just a little loud and intrusive for such a pricey dinner). The only time our waiter asked us a question was near the end—another bottle of wine? And then he asked a second AFTER we finished dessert—coffee? I felt like we fell for a Union Square or Pier 39 tourist scam while knowing as a 20 year resident of San Francisco that there are such great restaurants worth a visit. I write this to save you—fellow resident or out of town visitor we are grateful to have in our city— from a similar experience.

Better than Expected

By TrishHWashington_DC |

I had read reviews from various sites and was a little worried about our experience. But I was pleasantly surprised. Neeraj, the matre-d, was friendly and escorted us (three) to a comfortable table where our Italian waiter quickly offered us appetizers and drinks. Both appetizers and drinks arrived quickly and he was helpful on ordering. We three had an excellent dining experience here--food delicious. Therefore I can only say good things about Zingari. We weren't there for the jazz bar, so can't comment on it. But the dinner was excellent, although expensive. Would I dine here again? Yes, although knowing I will pay top price for the pleasure. Reservations recommended.

Over "waitered" and under flavoured

By Louise P |

Not much choice of food for a vegetarian, I ordered the butternut squash risotto with gorgonzola and kale chips. As risotto goes it was ok but I didn't get any hint of gorgonzola at all. The kale chips were awful, it was like eating dry autumn leaves. The initial waiter was very pleasant but during the course of the meal I felt completely over-"waitered" with so many people asking me if things were ok. I wouldn't go back, too expensive for the quality of the food.

Wonderful Food, Atmosphere and Service!

By Butch |

We celebrated our anniversary dinner here. Wonderful dinner menu and wine list. Delicious Italian meal with attentive service.

Horrible, unauthentic restaurant

By Cynthia M |

Rude waiters, even worse was the owner. Our drinks took about 1 hour to get to us, the food was horrible. Horrible. A rare steak was well done. When we spoke to owner, he was unapolegetic and unconcerned. Never came by our table to apologize or offer to recook it. Tuna was way overcooked. There is nothing authentic about this place. When we finally got our food, the waiter AND the owner, stood by our table just looking at us the whole time. Weird. They DO NOT split checks. They split cards. The owner said that everyone at the table would spend the same the amount, so it would be split evenly. Untrue. Some people at our table didn't drink. They do not let you take pictures of food (says it clearly on their menus, AND there are the watching you). You will pay an automatic 20% gratuity for HORRIBLE service and food. All 8 of us feel awful about leaving our money there.

Wonderful experience

By Max |

Staff treated me like family, extremely hospitable. All staff were friendly, great food. Their warmth and friendliness made my experience so much better by staying there as I was a solo traveller it made it comfortable and fun .

Outrageously over priced !!

By David M |

Lunchtime and a conference in town. So how to behave ....? Cram as many customers in as possible so it’s like a packed zoo. Have a high minimum charge - no prior warning of this ! Add a minimum service charge. Plus taxes. Net result my small pasta plate cost $12 per piece. Staff disinterested. Will we go back ? NO ! Ripped off. Beware !

Great food, wine and music

By Barbara G |

Started with calamari. Had a beautiful bottle of Chianti Classico, Zuppa di pesce, papadell dela nonna (spareribs). The music was lovely and the atmosphere was wonderful. The service was very high level! Don’t forget the tiramisu and espresso!

The Bar Was Very Good

By Derrick U |

We did not eat in the restaurant because we were in the bar for Happy Hour and stayed to listen to the music. The food in the bar was nice and they had some happy hour specials for food, wine and beer. The burger was wonderful, very tasty and cooked how we liked it. The pizza was good but the burger really was the highlight. The bartender, Tom was very helpful and provided really good service. The entertainment that night was Suzanna Smith who was accompanied by a pianist. Very nice voice and jazz stylings of some old standards. The bar are is kind of small but a good area to listen to the music.

Reasonable Well-located Choice

By Rappongi27 |

Very nice Italian restaurant near Union Square. It’s in the Donatello Hotel. The Tonno (tuna) was some of the best I ever had. Price is in line with other quality restaurants. There is a jazz group in the very small bar area; if you want to listen, make sure you specify that when you make a reservation.

Worst brunch in SF.

By AlbertoMay |

Beautiful elegant and well located restaurant with a small problem. It was a group of six of us and every single dish came at different times and even some of us ordered the same thing the presentations where different. The brunch food was not good the italian croissants where hard and horrible and my benedict eggs just horrible. too many other options in SF.

A New Place I Tried - I Love It!!!

By Cecilia37 |

I enjoyed my first meal at the Zingari Restaurant, 501 Post St., on this trip in July. It was a Saturday and the jazz singer was hard at work. I was allowed to choose a room far enough away from the music that it was nice to hear instead of being too loud. I enjoyed everything I had there, the Belvedere martini was delicious, the green salad with walnuts and gorgonzola was so subtle and so good I never left a single morsel in my plate, and the fettucine with chicken was exellent. I even splured on a dessert; the tiramisu was exceptional - not too sweet. The dining area is above street level, and quiet, with white tablecloths and excellent service. I cannot wait to return.

Absolutely delightful and delicious!

By Ceecee12 |

On a business trip to SF this week I wanted a cozy and yummy dinner within walking distance from my hotel on Union Square. Zingari fit the bill perfectly! I had the most delicious meal and the service was delightful. Staff warm and welcoming. I had the brussel sprouts. Very good but be warned they are very rich (fried). Also had the beef carpaccio and meatballs. All accompanied by a light and fruity Prosecco. There were couples as well as groups and the atmosphere was lively. It is worth the stop!

Mediocre food

By Deborah M |

service was good, but food very mediocre. We had a Caesar salad, which was tolerable, tuna (over cooked & salty) & a pasta dish. Our waiter was excellent and we had a nice table near the window.

Zingari, a discovery in downtown San Francisco

By Anna B |

Arriving in ZINGARI was a discovery, a very nice restaurant that offers high quality food. Its Manager and Service do everything possible to give you the best experience, and so I ate one of the best Rigatoni with cheeses in recent years. The Mood, Service and Details just made it a perfect dinner, so I absolutely recommend it. Definitely, ARRIVEDERCI!

Overpriced and average

By Megan T |

We dined at Zingari in June of 2017. We were guests at the hotel attached to the restaurant and chose it because of convenience. The food was average and was WAY overpriced. I would not recommend this restaurant.

GREAT!

By Hopeydopey86 |

My husband and I visited San Francisco for a week on our honeymoon and the jazz bar was a nightly must for us. Live jazz every night at 8 with everything from flute and jazz saxophone and flute to piano and a singer. He would get a cappuccino with a shot of Baileys that was delicious or a nice glass of wine. I enjoyed the bumbling Mario cocktail or a lemon drop martini. They even gave us a complimentary piece of tiramisu (yummy!) to congratulate us on our honeymoon! If you like good drinks and nice jazz with a lovely atmosphere this a must in San Francisco!

Fine, friendly dining in a comfortable setting

By RamblinIMan |

We chose Zingari for the location, a quick walk west from Union Square. We will go back for the food, service and atmosphere. We were both impressed with the extremely friendly service and the delicious food. We also enjoyed the comfortable atmosphere even more after we moved over toward the piano after dining. The singer was very engaging and fun. This is not stuffy, fine dining. It is quality food and service in an intimate setting. The staff was exceptionally kind and accommodating. Our thanks to them!

Expensive and ordinary

By qpofg |

Not sure why this restaurant appears to be well supported in San Francisco. The food is expensive and only adequate given the prices (I can cook a better risotto than my wife received and I'm no chef) and the wine list is exorbitant - virtually nothing under $50 and many undistinguished wines. Perhaps it is just the 'snob' value why the more affluent eat here. Service was not particulalry friendly apart from Hari who was extremely pleasant. Overall, I would recommend going to just about any other Italian eatery nearby and save yourself around $100 per couple!

Zingari - Superbo Italiano!

By JamesJasper |

Zingari boasts a wonderful setting in Hotel Donatello, one block off Union Square. I enjoy sitting in the window and watching the people and activity on the street. The restaurant has large windows and is nicely appointed on the interior without being over the top. Very elegant staff, including the Maitre D (Neeraj Miglani) and Server (Raj). Pleasing jazz mix in the restaurant and fabulous live jazz in the bar. Zingari serves generous portions, fine dining, for a reasonable price. Summary of the meal for the night - Sparkling Rosé (like strawberries and creme fresche with soft bubbles and @ $13/glass) paired with a crostini with burrata cheese, diced tomato and micro-greens on a bed of drizzled olive oil and a second appetizer - lightly breaded and crisped brussels sprouts with crunchy bacon and bursts of enticing flavor; Barbera d' Alba ($16/glass) (black cherry and vanilla tobacco bouquet; tart cherry, lemon and butter with soft plumb and peppercorn notes) paired with the evening special of sliced filet migno on butternut squash risotto with basil, red wine infused rock salt, roasted pumpkin seed, a sprinkle of micro-greens, and topped with a toss of crispy flash-fried sage. Each bite invited another with a teasing blend of ingredients and pop of crunchy seed and fresh herb. If you're a guest at Hotel Donatello, definitely experience dinner and the live music in the lounge after. And, even if you're not staying at Hotel Donatello, Zingari and its lounge are worth a visit. I'll dine there again and again. Delicious, sensual experience all around! This restaurant also periodically hosts cocktail parties on the roof top terrace at Hotel Donatello. Wonderful experience with lush original cocktails, upbeat music, and a mix of locals and folks visiting San Francisco enjoying libations and fresh air and great views. Thanks Neeraj and team for a lovely dinner and after-dinner experience.

Nice for a dinner or happy hour

By Ton_Cassiano |

We were staying in the Hotel above and ate here once, but food was good as was the service. Prices are right too. There´s live music, mostly jazz, on certain nights.

barman needs to be deported.

By alex w |

I'm truly surprised how management of restaurants will hire individuals that are bordering violent, mentally unstable behavior. My friend and I walked in yesterday, January 14, in the evening, for a quick drink before a performance. there where two seats and an old woman, who looked more like homeless, was occupying the seat in between. she was politely asked to move by another patron, so that we can have the two seats. Instead she got up and abruptly left. The bartender run after her and when he returned he refused to offer us a drink. This is unprofessional, obnoxious behavior that will not be tolerated, perhaps it's behavior in the Third World country where the bartender is from, but not here. The manager/hostess of the restaurant profusely apologized and sat us at a dining room table where we had wine on the house. my hope is that the management of the bar at Donatello will take immediate steps to dismiss the bartender and ensure that those who are hired are indeed suitable for professional contact at work. I will also take up further action with homeland security to ensure that the restaurant does not hire illegals like that bartender, who are discrediting the reputation of the place and pose physical danger to guests. I'm certain the bartender has learned his lesson.

One of the best italian restaurants in San Francisco

By Tere A |

You find yourself in a piece of Italy dining here....unassuming place served by real italians, that really know what they are talking about. Anything you eat is just perfect. If anything as every italian restaurant is not very spacious nor the environment is breath taking but the food is just great. Ask for Stefano to serve your table, you'll know what I am talking about

Good service, high prices

By Keith S |

We came here for happy hour while staying at the Donatello hotel. There wasn't anyone there when we got there, but to be fair, it was a midweek day. We saw on Friday that more people showed up. Happy hour prices were higher than what I normally pay for regular drinks. Hey - it's San Francisco where all things cost more than what I normally pay. The bartender was really great and friendly though; that why I brought the rating up to 3 stars. But after the happy hour, I decided we wouldn't be back.

Mixed reaults

By tim m |

Business lunch with customers. Table of seven, service was incredible, some dishes awesome and some missed. Orrichete, lamb and rigatoni were fantastic. Others were not as impressed: strawberry ravioli dish sounded and looked very unique, may not be for everyone. Risotto de mare ended up being fettuccini (seems like that should have been communicated) appetizer sampler was also fantastic.

Disappointed

By Jen F |

The food was poorly cooked, over priced with poor service! Save your money! The Jazz band was the best part but did have a cover charge, even with a $200 meal’

Overall Amazing

By Janet P |

The food and ambiance was incredible, and the service was outstanding. It has several little areas to enjoy dinner and listen to some live music and so many private dining areas. It's a fantastic place to host client meetings or team events. All the staff were so professional, well versed on the menus and provided exceptional service. This was some of the best Italian food I've had in California and you definitely need to try the pesto gnocchi.

Don’t Go

By Judith D |

What a disappointment! I wanted to treat my family to a memorable Christmas dinner and unfortunately it will be memorable for all the wrong reasons. The service was slow and aloof, the presentation of the food was uninspiring and the meal itself was tasteless. $250.00 per person was overpriced. I highly recommend avoiding this establishment!

Excellent Jazz & Very Good Food

By JHHboat |

We lucked out with this place. The jazz duo was terrific. Food and service were very good. My wife had the salmon and I had pasta with sausage. Both very good. We sat in the room with the music. Ask for this room when you make a reservation. You can’t hear the music in the main dining area.

Great staff and jazz music

By michael v |

This restaurant is right down the street from the Hilton and has great Italian food try Bolognese and definitely the meatballs they have a jazz band at the upstairs bar and the staff is Great there

excellence

By psandberg |

perfect touch in the kitchen - tuna was seared on the edges and delightfully near raw on the inside - along with a delightful blend of veggies, subtle sauce and feathery, light, mashed potatoes. Minestrone soup was so tasty - hearty with every veggie in symphony. Osso Bucco again perfectly prepared, falling off the bone with a tasty sauce accompanied by yummy risotto. Excellent wines available by the glass, topped off by old world style tiramisu. Why this restaurant doesn't get more recognition is beyond me... The prices are not outrageous for SF and the food prep certainly shows a deft touch in the kitchen. Who knows, maybe it's different on weekends or during prime hours - we dined at 5:45 on a Wednesday and couldn't be more impressed.

Excellent food, decor and service

By ankitdhamija |

I was so impressed by the service and food here. The waiters were extremely attentive to us and the food was prompt and delicious. Neeraj, the restaurant owner’s son, ensured that our experience was memorable. I would highly recommend this restaurant to both locals and future visitors!

Best Rack of lamb ever...and I'm Australian!

By james9w |

Now, don't get me wrong - it's a pricey restaurant but you get what you pay for. Beautiful food, learned a lot about the Italian culture in SF & the service was exceptional. A little tight with anyone using a wheelchair but very accommodating!

Great find on Opentable....will definately return to Zingari

By 949Global |

The service from the start was excellent and I have to say this might be one of the best & friendliest staff's I've encountered in SF. The food---well it was all excellent. Our party of 3 all enjoyed our meals. My stuffed chicken dish was awesome and I'd return here to get it again.

Great business meal even in a extremely busy time

By plpark55 |

Zingari consistently delivers excellent business lunch service even during JP Morgan week; likely the most demanding week in the year for Union Square restaurants. This was the third visit in three years to Zingari and all three times all were impressed by the food's quality, delivery and wait staff attention. Zingari is on our go to list and I look forward to trying this for dinner in the future when things are as crazy.

Very Good Experience

By Robert M |

Quiet, not crowded. We were six adults on a baseball trip. Very good food. Service was excellent. A little pricey but worth it.

Very nice group dinner in the Florence room

By meklof |

We were seated on the Florence room as we had a large group which made conversion easy and we felt like we got our on private dining experience. Thanks for the group menu offering 3 main courses, everyone got something to their liking. There were plenty of staff on hand to make sure service was efficient but friendly. It was non inexpensive, but it was a very good value.

Best Italian Restaurant

By Therese P |

This was one of the best Italian Restaurants in which I've ever eaten. Everything tasted amazing. We shared a meatball appetizer, baked prosciutto over mozzarella, and fig toast - all were equally good. The tuna dish was delicious, as was the ravioli's filled with crab. We originally had plans to eat on the rooftop, but it was too cold and there weren't any heaters, so we ate inside. The food and service were great - it was definitely one of my favorite restaurants during our vacation.

Great Experience

By Hotelreview05 |

Food was great! Bartender was extremely nice and great! I came to this restaurant 3 times while I was in town for dinner just based on the service I received. Met the owner/manager who was very friendly. Will be back if I am ever back in the area!

Delicious food, lovely setting and great service.

By Janneore |

Four of us shared a good bottle of Chianti, yummy bread with dipping oil, 2 appetizers and a salad before going on to actual dinner elsewhere. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable and the white tablecloths and sparkling glassware were lovely. Will come back for a full dinner experience. The food was extra-delicious and the service excellent.

Smelled like a skunk, tasted like skunk and treated like skunks

By leslie m |

My friend and I stayed at the Donatello hotel last night and decided to try the restaurant Zingari. We were greeted nicely and although the restaurant was not busy, taken to a far back table in an empty corner that was kind of dark. My friend felt that since we are 60 ish age women, they may be binding us out. Next we ordered. The Caesar was ok BUT, they did not offer us pepper or Parmesan and there was no pepper on the table. I could not find the waiter, so we settled. When leaving the restaurant we spotted a service set up with a bowl of Parmesan and a large pepper grinder. They brought to other polenta appetizer at the same time as the salad. The service was very rushed! Before my friend even finished her Caesar, they showed up with our main course!! Br then the polenta was cold and all the disses were still on this tiny table and the waiter could not even set our main dishes down! I was helping him clear the table! We both ordered the tortellini with wine reduction! It was Luke warm and the grossest shades of brown one could ever imagine! The 4 tortellini were whole wheat, rubbery and cold. Very undercooked. These were piled with geasy hard brussel Sprouts and pile with fatty tough thick pieces of pancetta!! So over salted it was disgusting. We called the waiter and his boss over and they made us feel guilty about ordering anything else. The good part is that the service was so rushed we were out of there soon. We both left most of the meal on our plates. The tiramisu was ok but not nearly close to best I have had. They did comp. us on that. Will never go back!

Excellent Italian Food

Excellent Italian food. Great wine selection. Very friendly staff. Wonderful central downtown location.

Delicious Wild Boar and Risotto

By Georgia L |

This is a beautiful space - understated elegance. Great jazz tracks playing in the background. The meatballs were moist, tender and tasty! The wild boar was well prepared. I always search for the salt shaker but didn’t need to do so tonight. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Intimate Jazz and Dinner Spot

By Faylene |

Loved the restaurant. Had cocktails And calamari appetizer. Main meal had lamb chops and pasta. Service was excellent. Paid $10 To have dinner by Jazz band and it was well worth it. The inside space is kind of tight but they have larger spaces outside. Would visit again.

Great find for authentic Italian

By AtravellerB |

The food at Zingari is hands down the most authentic Italian in the Union Square area (and broader!) in San Fran. The beef carpaccio is great and allows the star to shine and the wine selection is great, understanding maybe you want Italian food and Italian wine! Service is great - it is there when you want it and remembers you!- and the jazz is a beautiful compliment. I have been to this place many times over the past couple of months and it doesn’t let down, and will continue to come due to the food, service, and ambiance:-)

Amazing

By Pixibead |

The food here was amazing and the service was top notch. Definitely recommend! I went here the first night I was in the city and liked it so much I went back again the second night.

Upscale vibe and date night ambiance, chill enough for any occasion!

By Arjun M |

We love coming to Zingari! Family owned and upscale vibe - Fancy dinner for a special occasion or even a chill night out when the wife is in the mood for a combo of Italian food and modern variety with a date night ambience. Food is spectacular - I love it when our family goes together because then we get to try an assortment of appetizers like the truffle and honey bruschetta, bruschetta al pomodoro, and crostini fichi with figs and honey! While my family loves the tried and true dishes like the salmon and fillet mignon, my wife and I are always in the mood for a different pasta.. they have a lot of options and they change occasionally so there’s always something fun to try. But one thing we all definitely agree on is the meatballs… suuuper yum and we always order more. The service…absolutely next level. Staff is super friendly, warm, delightful, and unbelievably above and beyond. We dined there on Thanksgiving once, and I had to make Mac n cheese for a potluck the next day and totally forgot to get… the cheese 🤦🏻‍♂️And all grocery stores were closed! When I asked the server for recommendations, the owner came back with 2 cups of Parmesan cheese for me to take home - no joke!!! Unreal!! I was blown away. And while I don’t expect most folks to run into that unique scenario, something more realistic is how they’re always happy to customize the pasta even when what you’re in the mood for isn’t quite on the menu! Highly recommend!!

Excellent food and wine, and flawless service

By Bob F |

We hosted a business dinner with about 12 people in a private room. Everything was perfect. The room was nice, every course of the dinner was excellent, and the service from Neeraj (the manager) and his team was outstanding. I would go back there in a heartbeat for either business or a romantic dinner in the dining room. Terrific find.

Excellent Italian dinner !

By srg45 |

It is located very centrally in SF just off Union Square . We had a very pleasant evening meal . Service is excellent and the several starters served were good . We tried the Salmon , lamb & risotto . All very well done . So was the desert Tiramisu . The live Jazz music is an added bonus !

Nothing special

By LjWrwc |

We were excited to try this restaurant for a Sunday brunch after reading the reviews and menu. What a disappointment. The limoncello pancakes were dry and not at all lemony, either in fragrance or taste. The omelettes were merely average. The jazz was nice, but it couldn't make up for the mediocre food at high prices. We will not be back.

Live Jazz and dinner

By Christine C |

They have jazz 7 nights a week. On the night We went there was a pianist and saxophonist. The jazz was really good although the music in the piano bar area is quite loud so If you want to talk it’s probably better to sit somewhere else in the restaurant The food is good although I felt it was a little over fussy. Burrata with beets didn’t need crispy fried polenta and lots of balsamic vinegar. We both had scallops which were overpowered by a tomato sauce and courgettes, beets, some other veg and carrots!! Simple would have been better. The wine list was good and they had a nice selection of half bottles. The staff were friendly and when I pointed out something missing they brought me a chefs selection of the missing ingredient. Overall it was a very pleasant evening in lovely surroundings.

Awful experience

By GrandTour677230 |

1.5 hours waiting for the main meal to be served. Service was random and confusing. Hard to imagine such a service in San Francisco or anywhere else.

It was better 3 years ago.

By Brion C |

I stayed at the Donatello Hotel about 3 years ago and had dinner at Zingari more than once. They had a nightly jazz band and the restaurant was always crowded, served great fresh food and had a nice little 4-5 stool bar. It is very different today. They now have live jazz only on Friday and Saturday nights. Last night I was about the only one dining in the entire restaurant for the 90 minutes I was there. The small bar is now darkened by a black curtain between the bar and the dining room. The food was ok but not great - I had the prosciutto wrapped mozzarella and the eggplant parmigiana. Both were a bit over cooked. The best part of the meal was the great Negroni made by Tyler, the house mixologist.

Last Night in Frisco Treat

By Joanne |

We were staying in the hotel and decided to eat here on our last night, having heard the jazz music playing throughout the week. I ordered the Cavolfiore, well seasoned, tasty cauliflower, to start. My partner ordered the soup of the day (lentil and carrot) which was also tasty. For mains, I enjoyed spaghetti with meatballs and my partner ordered the filetto al Gorgonzola. Both were enjoyable, decently proportioned meals. Service was efficient and friendly. Our bill came to around $100 plus tip and drinks.

First night in San Fran

Great authentic Italian restaurant, fab jazz and great expressotini to finish. Very traditional and formal restaurant. Looked after well by professional waiting staff. Nice evening

Enjoyable Italian

Looking for a quaint, quite, romantic Italian restaurant with very good food? Go to Zingari Ristorante. If possible take the time to stop at the bar for happy hour. This is a good balance of fine dining and reasonable pricing

Pleasant meal

By Sandra M |

We visited Zingari's when in search of an Italian restaurant in the Union Square area of San Francisco. The meal was very good & the service pleasant. The standard of dining in the general area seemed pretty low, but Zingari's definitely offered the best meal we had in S F. Worth a visit if staying in the Union Square area.

Convenient Union Square italian

First time here. Good ambiance. Food was average but service was excellent. Probably would look for, another Italian restaurant to eat in the area before coming back.

A good experience

By Roger S |

This was a very pleasant experience. Good service. Good food. Less good music. But that just me, I get nervous when hearing Jazz ;-).

Great food and great music. Nice staff. Superb cocktails and wines. Good place for unlikely experiences.

Great food / great service

Three of us went here for dinner. We had different appetizers and they were fanastic. Then we had the entree, wonderful. The Wild boar was very tasty, the crab ravioli great and the seafood risotto was good. Our waiter, Dusan, was the best.

Excellent food and great atmosphere

By Kevin D |

We enjoyed the food and the fantastic performers - just the right level for a great atmosphere, while facilitating conversation. We enjoyed it thoroughly.

Excellent Hospitality

By drinkcation |

5 stars all the way! Excellent hospitality which made us feel like family. I loved that they took our coats right away before we sat down and hung them in the coat check. Food and wine list are on point and the Jazz music was oh so good. We will be back soon! Cheers!

Not worth it

By Hannah |

We came here based on recommendation from our hotel and it was completely over hyped and expensive for the food quality and service you get. staff comes off and very unfriendly (not just our server but all of the staff we came in contact with) definitely not worth it, there are so many other amazing restaurants that will give you a better experience and meal than this place.

Great first time experience

By John D |

This was a new restaurant for us recommended by the hotel concierge and it did not disappoint. It was Christmas Eve, diner which was a prefix meal with plenty of nice choices. I had the crab cakes that were delicious my wife had an arugula salad. We followed this with Ahi tuna plate, crab ravioli and chocolate mouse and a bowl of gelato. The service was excellent, very attentive, but not overbearing. We thought that the pricing was very reasonable for the quality of the food, service and atmosphere. Zingari is in / attached to the Donatello Hotel and there is also a Jazz bar, but we were only there to dine. Good experience and we will return again.

People running this place are a scam!

By Denis I |

Here is my story how I was charged $300 for nothing. ======================================== I was last minute planning a birthday dinner for my father for Sunday night. I called on Saturday and talked to a very "salesy" person. On all of my questions about the atmosphere and music, he said "You just have to come to see it. I don't want to spoil the surprise!". Since it was about 7 pm on Saturday I decided to reserve a table. They asked my CC for confirmation and mentioned nothing about their !!! 11 days cancelation policy !!! at the time of the booking. I did more research and realized that 3-star reviews are probably on the more optimistic side for this place. The very tasteless inside atmosphere. The jazz setup seemed very unprofessional and reviews about food and service were horrible. We decided to cancel the reservation and I was notified about $300 charge. I wrote a kind email to I believe owner's son Neeraj asking to waive the fee because: 1. He didn't mention anything about the cancellation policy. 2. It was Sunday night, and there is no opportunity cost lost for this place by me not showing up. 3. The reservation was made less than 24hr before the event. How was I surprised to receive the email that I'm gonna be charged $300!!! ~~~~~~~~ If you are looking for a successful jazz place with good food, then look somewhere else (Black Cat for example!). I think this place is really struggling to survive and that's why the owners are so corrupt.

Very good and fair price!

By LQGuy |

Our only complaint was the noise level inside the restaurant. That's it. Otherwise, the setting is lovely! The food was exceptional! The prices seem fair for the market/location and food. Service was quite good! Dessert was phenomenal! While we live over in the Napa area, we will definitely consider a return visit when back in The City!

Lovely and pricey but worth it for the food and tunes

By calculush1 |

I came here by accident one day while walking around Union Square. I heard some jazz eminanting from the entrance and poked my head in out of curiosity. I ended up spending almost 2 hours there, eating dinner, and enjoying the fine wine and music. It was such a nice surprise! It's true, this place is a bit pricey, but it's worth it for the quality of food you are getting and for the tunes! I'm waiting for an opportunity to go back. It is a "special occasion" type of place, with "special occasion" type prices. The vibe inside is very nice, but as others have mentioned, it is a small space. The Friday that I was there, it really wasn't packed at all. I must have just gotten lucky.

Not a great restaurant at all

By Pierre C |

When you travel to San Francisco, Zingari restaurant is always well recommended. So we went to that place. And..... It is once again a pseudo Italian restaurant for American palate. Nothing great at all. First the service: nice but very long. 15 minutes to get water; 35 minutes after ordering to get the wine and the waiter shaking the bottle as if it was a coktail. FYI a 200$ wine! Soup: minestrone: what to say: frozen green beans! The philosophy of minestrone is a simple dish; soup on wish you add vegetables of the season, long and soft cooking with pasta (here 7 pieces of pasta😂😂) Pasta: heavy meatballs too dry and too much garlic: powder garlic. The pasta was overcooked and not al dente And they charge you the bread 🤬 So having say that; if you really love Italian food: you know what to do or not to do.

Thanksgiving Dinner

By Keila T |

We were visiting San Fran from Miami for Thanksgiving weekend. Being from out of town we booked the thanksgiving dinner here which was 85 per person for 3 courses. Initially we knew it was going to be expensive and hoped the food was worth it. Obviously we think it could've easily been 55 per person considering portions and quality but we had no complaints. Everyone at the table was happy with the meal they chose. Portions could've been a little more but we were still full after dessert. Overall, I can only speak to the pre-fixe menu they had for Thanksgiving but we did not have a bad experience.

Excellent

Food was good, service outstanding and drinks we excellent as well. Great little spot for quick bite or longer meal.

My cousin from Michigan had heard about this restaurant. We went for Happy Hour. Had Chicken Caesar Salad and Crab Cakes both were delicious.

Zingari Ristorante and Jazz Bar

Wow...first class! The service was unbeatable...the wine Devine and the food outstanding! It is expensive but worth it. Will return if ever in San Fran again.

Great Italian offering in Union Square

By davidlandissf |

A great Italian offering in Union Square. Perfect for pre or post theatre dining. Delicious carpaccio, lamb chops and homemade pastas, including a feather-light gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce. Plus, Tyler the bartender makes one of the best espresso martinis in town. Upscale design and attentive service to boot.

Delicious!

By 1219Robin |

This is fun, intimate restaurant that has live jazz music and delicious Italian food. We started with their mozzarella, basil and bruschetta which was good. Three of us had the fettuccine with scallops, muscles and prawns in a light lemon sauce...incredible. Others had risotto with squash which didn't get great reviews. They have a nice extensive Italian wine list which was a little pricey but we found a familiar Sicilian choice. The service was great.

Impeccable Italian Restaurant

By Dil927 |

Zingari Ristorante is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. Pre-covid I would come with my friends for an amazing Italian dinner and jazz night. Luckily for us, during quarantine, they are still offering delivery and takeout so you can still enjoy their amazing food. Their ossobuco and paparadelle is to die for. All of their pastas are so fresh and exemplify authentic Italian cuisine. The portions are hearty and delightful and appetizers are delicious. Definitely stop by here if you want authentic, clean, robust flavors, nice ambiance, great cocktails and an overall good time.

Great food, music and atmosphere

By | L J | |

We were in town for a Tech conference (go figure) and decided to have a team dinner at Zingari. We were first welcomed by the GM who was very kind and walked us to our table. We specifically came to have dinner and hear the jazz. The table was close to the band, maybe a little too close but that's not really an issue. Once service kicked off, the drinks were flowing and the food was abundant. We ordered multiple dishes and decided to eat family style. Our server was well versed in the menu and guided us towards the best dishes. Overall, service was on point & the food was authentic and made with love. We will be back!

Tourist trap. More of a money racket than a restaurant.

By ThePinkCar |

Tourism trap. These folks figured out exactly how to get the most money for the least effort, food and wine costs. Yet charge super high prices. Start with the Wine list. The vintage wine they claim to have in the wine list was wrong on two wines. The markup on the lousy wine that we ordered with six times retail. That bottle sells for $10. They sell it for $64! Pasta dishes were tiny in portion size and $30 each! Not too much taste. To top it off, there is a ”mandatory” tip of 20% on all party sizes. Just 3 of us splitting dishes was $207.000!!!! This is practically theft. Plus, they let in families with screaming, noisy kids. North Beach is around the corner for fabulous Italian food, next time. See photos.
