Before the explosive growth of brew pubs in Portland, when we would think of great beer we would think of Germany!!! Finally, we have a German Brew Pub in Portland with great German beer and food. We ate off of the 'happy hour' menu and sampled most of the beers they had on tap at the time. At the end of our gathering, we decided this will be the meeting place of choice when we gather 3 to 4 times each year to catch-up. Can't wait to go back and try food from the dinner menu.

This brewpub is out of the way a bit. It has a parking lot which makes it easier to visit than many of the closer in pubs. The atmosphere is a bit warehouse like but there is plenty of space. A good place to visit if you are with a group. They have a good selection of beer, not just German style. I enjoyed the IPA. The food is mostly German style. The first time I visited, I had the goulash and was disappointed. It was neither a soup or stew as it is usually served in Europe. Instead it was just a few lumps of not very tender beef. However, the next time, I tried the Spaetzle with with cheese and carmelized onions. It was much better. The appetizer of crispy bacon wrapped Brussels sprouts was to die for. The service was very good and friendly.

This is one of the few options in the Lents neighborhood. The staff is ALWAYS great. Family friendly and large enough where you can always get a table. The food and beer are good, (nice selection of beers), and they have a couple of options for wine too. We love getting a giant pretzel to start off with our drinks. This is our regular go-to place; close to home and consistently delicious food and pleasant atmosphere. A plus: They have a nice sized parking lot!

Stopped by this Cavernous brewpub restaurant for a ale and snack. This place can hold aloh of people. I had a IPA and the wife had a Hef. Wheat beer. Both were ok not great. But everyones taste are different. ordered a Hummus plate, they were out...... Got fries, pretty greasy. Might stop in again for something different.

Always on the look out for German food, we decided to give this place a try, even though it is not in one of the more popular neighborhoods of Portland. The place is actually quite spacious and has that open, friendly German feel to it. Our server was personable, relaxed and friendly, with great knowledge of the beer. We opted for a taster flight to sample the different beers. Of course, all are German inspired, and quite good at that. My personal favorite is the Hefe-style beer. The food is wonderful, they have a special that features different Schnitzels daily. I selected this option and the one I had turned out to be the best Schnitzel I have ever had. I plan on returning often, this place is truly a great find.

This brewery is new and has very good beer of various types. The Happy Hour food is ok like the usual Happy Hour food but the regular entrees were quite good. Ths fish and chips was flavorful, the Reuben was REALLY good and they even added extra sauerkraut by request which was nice. The service was GREAT! Try this brewery and you not go away disenchanted. You wil refer your friends for a good time!

I hate to rain on the parade of the people who think this is a wonderful addition to the Lents neighborhood. But to me it was a strange, unsatisfactory experience. First, it's a huge place, I estimate some 10,000 square feet, extremely sparsely decorated; basically wide open like an enormous school cafeteria. Unless a place like that is packed, it doesn't feel comfortable - and it was far from packed. So, despite the theme of the place being German or Austrian, it has no Gemütlichkeit. It doesn't have any German beer either, only the beers they brew themselves. We ordered six tasters of those, but even though they included a so-called Kölsch and an Oktoberfest, they were all the typical contemporary Portland style - too heavy on the hops. If that's your thing, and it is for many people, there are a gazillion other places you can find it; but I'd been hoping for something authentic. My companions ordered Goulash and a Jägerschnitzel. They were all right, but for $12 and $14 respectively they could have included a small vegetable dish like red cabbage or Sauerkraut; that stuff is cheap. All they got with their dish were noodles. But the Pièce de Résistance was my Currywurst ($7). Traditionally that's a cut-up bratwurst with a ketchup-curry sauce and fries. Though the homemade fries were rather limp they would have been passable if the cook had not dumped an enormous glob of refrigerator-temperature sauce all over them. I think the person who enjoys eating cold fries isn't born yet. Anyway, when after a couple bites I asked the overweight waiter to take it away, and explained why, he said he'd pass it on to the kitchen but made no attempt whatever to fix the situation. Without further complaints I paid the bill, but there won't be another one. And I wonder if whoever is backing this place shouldn't reconsider the wisdom of starting out a new concept with so much space and overhead. Better to start small, find out what works, and then expand.

We've gone here twice and both times the kitchen has bee closed. What is up with the kitchen crew? Should have called first.

This is more of a food hall, in many ways., The beer was good and the food was good as well, with large servings. My wife and I had to split a schnitzel. The cucumber salad was also good. You order at the counter, so this is very casual.

We are from Michigan and are visiting family for Christmas. We have been here before but tonight was different. Service was extremely slow. Dinners cane and we did not have silverware. Waited for anybody to come by and Nope, I had to go find somebody to get us silverware. Our waitress never came by the table once our food was served. Never stopped to see if we needed anything or if we needed another drink. Nope. Paid the bill and went down the street to have drinks. Food was fine. They were very busy and I think they were understaffed. No excuse. You should have enough staff.

Hello. Portland. Hello SE. finally an option other than Prost on Mississippi for a NICE German beer house alternative. Stein Haus is ok. But the atmosphere and selection can compete with this. I am so glad my German friend told me to come here. It is just what I needed!!

This place is a pretty good solid 4 out of 5. Great beers, the food was good but not impressive except for the bacon wrapped Brussel Sprouts which were amazing! Don't get me wrong the food was good but there are better choices out there. The service was friendly and the place was clean so it was enjoyable and I would go back particularly for the Lager, it was exceptional!

Our party of 7 adults, a 4-year-old and an almost 2-year-old had an early lunch here on a Monday. Husband and I had come from out of town to meet the others, and were pleased with how easy it was to find. We all had arrived right at opening time, so almost no one else was in the restaurant yet. We seated ourselves in mom's-eye-view of the play area, which was a perfect spot. My veggie burger (one of few vegetarian options) was delicious. Even better was the braised red cabbage, a lovely pickled purple, that accompanied it. The others in our party seemed happy with their Reubens, wienerschnitzel, hamburger, and mac & cheese. The salad eater wasn't happy with her meal, but that's still a pretty good batting average for the fare. My quibble was with the service. I requested water with no ice, and was told they didn't have any. (Hello??) So, I suggested they just give me plain old tap water, and emphasized I'd like it at room-temperature. How difficult could that be? When my ice-free water arrived, it was still icy cold. Apparently someone had merely scooped out the cubes. Second quibble: We women visited the restroom before eating, and noted there was no soap in either dispenser. We asked our server to pass the word about the soap. She seemed to agree to. But after our lunch and our chit-chat -- we were there almost 2 hours -- I returned to the restroom before leaving. Still no soap. Small details, yes, but annoying -- especially since business was slow that day. Still, I would eat here again, if only for the food and location. But, probably, I'll bring my own water bottle and hand sanitizer next time!

This craft brewery/restaurant is in the Lentz district of southeastern Portland. The pub features a child play area adjacent to family style booths. The theme here is German. The spätzle is some of the best outside Germany.

This place was listed closest to where I was staying. Very good beer selection. With an emphasis on European lagers. Had a small pizza and it was very tasty. The other people who were dining nears me got good size portions and ate every thing that was on their plates. Speaks well for the quality of the food. Service was good and the server was knowledgeable about the beers.

We were looking for a new brewery to hit that had outside seating for our puppy, Zoiglhaus is pretty new and has more uncommon to portland german style beers. Although far for us, we made the trek out to Foster and 205. We found the place right away and sat outside. It is a pretty busy street-82nd, so there was constant traffic, which was a bit loud..but it was pleasant out and the dog was happy. We started with a kolsch and a dubbel. The kolsch, nice and light for summer and the dubbel was excellent with a dark color and a carmelly, malty flavor. We chose the burger and the clubhaus. The burger was very flavorful with some excellent fries. the clubhaus was also great..with some salty-cured ham and thick bacon with thick, toasted sourdough. The red beer was also very good. We didn't spend much time inside, but the inside is very large with a big wraparound bar and logs of seating. It was dead on a Sunday at lunch. It is a hike, but the beer was good, the food was very good and I can see making it back out there for another try

We visited here on a Tuesday evening expecting it to be busy based on past reviews. We were pleasantly surprised! Though still busy, we sat at a table immediately and had several of their homemade German beers. They have a great place for kids to play as the adults wait for dinner (don't get me wrong, this isn't McDonald's, the place is very classy) and oh my gosh is the food good. Beer cheese soup is excellent while the sausage platter is pure German. They also had burgers and German pizzas and for the kids, homemade German mac and cheese. They had a pesto beer which tasted just like liquid pizza in a good way. Knocked our visit out of the park while also being kid friendly. This is certainly a place you will need to like German food and beer. Parking tip: When looking for parking, drive past the brewery and you will find a separate parking lot the brewery shares with a carpet place with lots of parking.

A good selection of beers, not just a lot of IPA. I especially enjoy the darker beers and my IPA drinking friends are happy with the house IPA. Lots of open space and a nice play area for kids and a kids menu. The table arrangement and staff make it easy to accommodate large groups (8-10)..

Appreciated this spot for it's community feel. Liked the cross section of customers, not just the under 30 hip crowd. Food was decent--sort of typical pub food with a German twist-- and beer quite good. Our server was attentive. Will go back.

So the appetizers were good. We liked the fries, currywurst and pretzel with cheese sauce. The beer was good too. The burgers, although ordered rare and medium rare were well done. Hockey pucks is how they were described. The corned beef tasted a lot like roast beef on the Reuben. Most of the food was not finished, but the server did not ask why. Actually our plates were not ever cleared. The service was OK. The bathrooms were nice and clean. A little overpriced for what we got for lunch. I might go back for a beer and snack but probably not a meal.

We stumbled on to Zoiglhaus during this past Portland Burger Week. Their German Burger was my wife's favorite of 6 burgers sampled that week. A classic beef patty topped with frizzled sauerkraut and a caraway-infused aioli and melty swiss cheese paired GREAT with a glass of German beer. The fried picked spears were an added bonus. We will be back!!!

I've been to Germany more than a few times, I kinda have an idea of what a Bierkeller should be... This is not your traditional Bierkeller. It's more like Portland Brewpub with a German name and a few German things. The place is huge... it feels dank and creepy. Maybe if it was filled it would feel better? Minimalist decor. Our server was very nice and attentive. The beer in made in house... Half Local Portland type ales and half German Styles. Not a big selection of either. The German styles we tried were just OK. Definitely not world class... Some off notes in all beers. Too hoppy or medicinal. Food was atrocious! I don't use that word very often when reviewing a place. Curry wurst was dry as a bone and kinda cold. It had kind of a gray color that wasn't very appealing nor was it tasty. The Curry sauce was ok. The fries were lukewarm and flavorless. Taste like eating straw. The Spätzle cheese thing was bad on many levels! The Spatzle were huge doughy worm shaped things. I've not seen it ever look like this. Flavorless. The cheese sauce was minimal with hints of garlic and what tasted like cheap McCormick's Curry Powder. A bad memory for my youth! The melted cheese on top had little flavor or depth. Two bites was enough... It laid in my belly like an ever expanding dough brick! That was enough of that! We checked it out and we left..... never to return.... :-(

Mix a brewery with German food add kid friendly and it don't get much better. A place for kids to play and very good selection of foods.

This is a small, quiet restaurant and brewhaus that has the best food and the friendliest service I have found in Portland.

We had a great lunch here. The space is light and bright, and I love the openness above the bar. The booths and tables were all very nice I love brewpubs that offer 10 oz beers so I can try more than one without getting a flight . The Pilsner and IPA were fresh and delicious. The spaetzle and bavarian pretzel were yummy, and the fish and chips were crispy and light. My daughter had the german style pizza (doughy and cheesy?) which isn't my thing but she loved it. Tried to be good and got a salad too but it was meh. Service was exceptional and friendly

Wife had and loved the A to Z Burger and i personally had one of the best Reubens I've ever had. Beer was good, especially the Red. Look forward to coming back here.

This place is the very definition of "public house" -- a big space with a nice bar, Lents locals and families enjoying the atmosphere. The beer is coming from Pints at the moment but on-site brewing should begin within a month or so. The goulash with spaetzle was quite tasty and paired nicely with a Schwartzbier.

We stopped for lunch for the first time here. Waitstaff was generous in offering tastes of three different beers. Tried the A TO Z Burger that hashaus-made sauerkraut, smoked gouda, haus-made bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, and haus mustard on brioche. Liked it!

Oooh yummy! I love German food! Also this place is HUGE! I can imagine it to get crazy on a FIFA game game day. The food was pretty good quality. I ordered a bacon burger with Kraut and fries. My boyfriend ordered a Ruben. For my burger the one thing I would want different is more well done cooked bacon. It was just a bit more fatty than I could handle. My boyfriend's was on the slim side for meat. It was good and the kraut was well balanced but we both felt like it lacked meat. Maybe I put too much meat on mine at home when I make it. Ha! The fries were beer weren't beer battered but still good! They had excellent service and prompt meal turn out! I still can't get over just how much space they had. Good choices for beer (German style) Hefe is my go to, always, unless it is a spur or cider.

The food and beer were so delicious! The bacon-wrapped brussel sprouts were to die for, as was the A to Z burger. Loved both the Haus IPA and Weiss were yummy. Our server was super friendly and great with our two sons. Definitely worth the trip!

We have visited this restaurant 3 times since New Years Eve. The original draw was the huge children's play area, allowing parents and guests to enjoy their dinner. The restaurant is also a brewery with excellent beers. I like the Pilsner. I've had the Schnitzel of the Day on two occasions and found them both pretty good. Love the spätzle underneath. Also enjoyed the Brussels sprouts wrapped in bacon. The menu is not large, but most will find something tasty. A large off street lighted parking area is a plus!

Great place to bring kids, with a whole separate play area and lots of kid friendly menu items (some German dishes). Wide variety of German beer options with season changes. Good German food. A very welcome addition to the Lents neighborhood, with a great remodel of a historic building.

Best fried dill pickles I've had. My friend had the Jager - chicken breast with a wonderful sauce. I had the sausage platter. The only complaint was the potatoes in the German potato salad were a bit cruchy. Don't know if they were supposed to be, but they weren't to my liking. Big interior with concrete floors and a decent beer list.

A recent Fri. evening visit w/ 11 family and friends. They handled our seating magnificently, servers all over us getting us started as we dribbled in at different times.....made sure everyone got to order something as soon as they sat down. Same owners as Pints in NW Portland, and I can tell you they know their brewing! Tried pretty much all the offerings as was able to sip off others while downing my own selections......and there were no rejects. If you don't know what to order, servers will ask you what you like then offer suggestions, very knowledgeable. Bar food and entrees off main menu offered a wide variety, either flat-out German or with a Bavarian twist. I had the delicious sausage platter and it came w/ a combo potatoes & sauerkraut. Appetizers we ordered were the spicy currywurst appetizer , kale dip and very good French fries. Other meals ordered included the schnitzel and goulash. All was authentic, though a bit Americanized. This is not a quiet place, it is family friendly so there were quite a few young children there, even babies in strollers. The background music was so loud when we arrived our server could not even hear us, but one very brief word with the very polite manager and the situation was rectified immediately. You get a sense the employees truly want their customers to be happy and enjoy. As a bonus, we met the owner Alan as we were leaving and he, too, seemed very appreciative we came and truly happy we enjoyed.

Went here for lunch as it was recommended by a friend. My husband ordered the Rueben & said it was one of the best he's ever had. I had the cheesesteak which was very good. We both had the warm potato salad which is excellent. I also had a pilsner which was very good. Will definitely return to try out other menu items.

We've been wanting to try this place since it opened 10 months ago in the Lents neighborhood, so decided to enjoy our anniversary lunch here. Pretty empty on this weekday with only a couple of moms with their kiddos in the back area which has toys for children to enjoy. There are bar seating, tall tables, booths and regular tables in this large space. We started with complimentary tastes of a few different beers so we could decide and not being fans of IPAs, ordered a chocolate/orange stout and the Duppel - both were excellent... Our appetizer came quickly and it was amazing! I would HIGHLY recommend you get the Bacon Wrapped Brussels Sprouts Skewers! We then started in on a Flammkuchen (German Pizza) - the Hans and Franz. The flat bread type crust was very tasty - crunchy from a bit of cornmeal and topped with cubes of German sausage, red pepper, red onion, and mozzarella. We weren't able to finish our house pickled veggies, but they were also yummy and included cauliflower, red pepper, cucumber and carrot. But that didn't stop us from ordering a delicious waffle topped with chocolate coated bacon - not a morsel of which remained on the plate. When our waiter heard that it was our anniversary, he comped one of our beers which was a nice touch. While we ate, a few more folks dropped in as well as another family. I bet it would get noisy if it were more crowded, and we'd probably choose to sit on the "non-family" side of the place on a busy night...

Zoiglhaus Brewing is a German style brewery located in SE Portland. The taproom also houses a restaurant which serves a range of tasty dishes, not all of them German style. Zoiglhaus takes its name from the German word zeigen, which means show or demonstrate, and refers to a tradition in parts of Germany where villagers would brew their own beer in their houses and offer it for sale to others by putting a sign outside their house. In Bavarian dialect, the word zeigen becomes zeigl and the brewery name Zeglhaus means "sign house". The sign used by these villagers consists of two triangles, one inverted, superimposed one on top of the other. The final image resembles the Star of David but the six points of the triangles are intended to reflect the 6 ingredients of beer, namely water, malt, hops, air, fire and water. The brewery has a very nice warm taproom/restaurant where, as mentioned they serve some very good food along with their beers. I had a couple of different beers during my visit. I first tried the ZPA, IPA which is a very nice hoppy beer, a little sweeter in the finish than most IPAs. I then had a glass of the Haus IPA which is a very good, bitter, hoppy IPA style beer. This was a very nice brewery to visit with a nice taproom, good food, and, of course, good beer.

I stopped here for dinner and beer. I started with their Hefeweizen which was quite good. I ordered the sausage platter. It came out about 10 minutes later. It had two huge sausages with sauerkraut and warm potato salad. It was very good. Carlene took great care of my orders. Top notch service.

We went for dinner to Zoiglhaus during Burger Week in Portland. The burger they were featuring was a schnitzel burger (breaded and fried like a pork schnitzel) which sounded intriguing. The setting is a large dining area with a central bar area. The noise level was loud enough that it made conversation difficult. Service was good but not exceptional. Our server was basically efficient and friendly and did answer our questions. The burger was very tasty and the portions were generous. The beer I had, a seasonal, was okay. I had expected something more in a brewery and perhaps it was just that particular beer that I didn't find satisfying. With the good food and interesting menu we probably will return to try some of the regular fare and to sample their other beers.

Not even a huge German beer fan, but these brews were some of the best! The 12 Decades of Wit was such a refreshingly light beverage with a hint of fruity sweetness. The IPA was reported as great as well, along with 7-8 others that sounded equally enjoyable. Happy Hour 3-5:30pm saves you a buck on pints, $10 growler fills, and a handful of savory dishes at decently discounted prices. The loaded fries were definitely slathered in no shortage of toppings! Those pickled onions are delicious! Oh not to mention the chunks of sausage and bacon too... Our server/bartender Tyler was also awesome, tending to us quickly and making sure everything was better than alright. And no, he didn't pay me to write this (venmo: samD)😆. They have plenty of TV's, a pool table, foosball, and lounge seating with a rather large dining/bar area. Lotta windows make it fresh and airy feeling, neat decorations add to the ambiance. Looking forward to returning again soon! Best, ~S

Super bummed they stopped hand making the delicious large pretzels and instead use the small frozen ones I can buy at the store. The food quality and consistency in general has gone downhill since when I first started going there a couple years ago. New cook? Beer is still tasty and bartenders are always pleasant. Just no need to go in as frequently now that I can buy the same food, for less, at the grocery store.

Ate here last night with friends before a baseball game. The food was delicious. I had a chicken Jagerschnitzel that well prepared and a very large portion of spaetzle and a dish of red cabbage. I couldn't eat it all, so I took it home. My friends had a burger and fish & chips and both enjoyed them.
Great family-friendly place for lunch, dinner, and events
We go here frequently because it's got an easy-going environment, great food, great beer, terrific staff, and it's mega kid-friendly. We just had our son's 1st birthday party in Zoiglhaus's banquet room. Even though we were a large party with several checks, the manager and staff gave great service, making us feel comfortable and right at home. We couldn't have asked for anything better. It was a perfect day! Great place for lunch, dinner, and events.
