Introducing Ruoergai

Ruoergai County, part of the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, lies on the northeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, in northern Sichuan Province. Known as the "Oasis of the Northwestern Sichuan Plateau," it was ranked first among the six most beautiful wetlands selected by China National Geographic. Here, you'll find vast grasslands, a sea of ​​blossoms in midsummer; a sky within reach, beneath which wind horse flags convey the most sincere blessings; and a pure faith, where monks in red robes pray day and night for this sacred place. The people here are simple and at ease, rarely seeking to explore the outside world, yet offering warm hospitality to those who do.

Best time to travel

Summer (July-August). Summer is the best time to travel to Ruoergai. Located on a plateau, temperatures remain relatively low, making it ideal for outdoor activities. Most importantly, during this time, the grasslands and hills are ablaze with wildflowers, and the famous Flower Lake sways with its shadows, making it the most beautiful time of year. Furthermore, many of the Tibetans' most important festivals are concentrated in winter (December-April). Although the weather is harsh and tourist numbers are sparse, it's the perfect time to experience authentic ethnic customs if you're not afraid of the cold.

While the outdoor temperature isn't high in the summer, the difference between morning and evening can be significant. It can be hot during the day, yet chilly enough to require a blanket at night. So remember to pack several thick layers for nighttime warmth, and during the day, be sure to wear a light, long-sleeved shirt and sunscreen. Winter temperatures often dip below freezing, making down jackets and thermal underwear essential. Temperatures in the plateau region are quite low from October to May, requiring heating. A thick coat and sweater are recommended. Rain and snow can also be a problem, so sunglasses and rain gear are a plus.

There aren't many places to spend money in Ruoergai, so the main expenses are transportation, accommodation, and food. Chartering a car from Ruoergai County to several scenic spots costs between 200 and 500 RMB. Accommodation costs are higher during peak season, around 200-500 RMB per night. Due to limited facilities and the large number of tourists, food costs are around 50 RMB per person per meal. Therefore, a 3-5 day trip would cost around 2,000 RMB.
