Beautiful place summer or winter!

By Val |

Lots of trails with many that lead to small sandy beaches. Lovely to walk/run in the winter. Summertime, be prepared for lots of flies and ticks!! Really avoided it during the tick season. Otherwise well maintained.

Great find!

By mommarios |

I was looking for something to do with my teens while on vacation. I called the park and a very nice lady told me it was free and that they could also lend us bikes and helmets free of charge. Music to my ears!. We went on a Wednesday in the Summer with about 85 degree weather. Very few people. Plenty of parking. They have a small nature center, but nonetheless enjoyable. The nice lady prepped the bikes in the meantime. I also realized that they have backpacks to loan with binoculars, books about species, clipboard to register your finds, etc. We biked the trails all the way to the beach. Unfortunately, there's no swimming due to jellyfish in the water. We had a wonderful time!! I highly recommend it.

Great for a walk with nature and educational for kids and adults

By BobHorn818 |

We watched the ospreys on their nest, walked about two easy miles and had a great day!
The staff is helpful, polite and well informed. We'll be back.

nature

Great place to escape from the ordinary. Very natural setting and absolutely beautiful. Only drawback is the bugs are aggressive and give a nasty bite. Wear protection

The best place for a walk or hike!

By essgee0312 |

Cattus Island is beautiful at any time of the year! You can walk the main trail down to the bay beach area, or follow color-marked trails through the woods. It is pretty, scenic, and full of birds. While there, check out the Butterfly Garden. Be prepared to take some pretty pictures!

Great Place to enjoy nature year-round

By Dianne M |

Cattus Island is located on the Barnegat Bay not far from the Atlantic Ocean. It offers miles of wonderful trails in a variety of environments: salt marsh, upland forest, swamps (boardwalks) and some trails include beautiful views of the water. Boaters can approach the island from the water and drop anchor to fish or sunbathe. Although there is no swimming, the park naturalists will help you place a net in the water for seining. And the nature center is lovely with many displays of the birds and animals found in the Pine Barrens. A butterfly garden outside the nature center, numerous bird feeders that allow bird watching from inside and outside the center, osprey platforms all provide wonderful bird watching opportunities. Naturalists are on hand to share their knowledge with you and classes are offered throughout the year, as well as boating trips. Do be sure to wear insect repellent.....ticks are abundant!

Cattus Island County Park

By Debbie B |

Our family visited Cattus Island Park. I did not know what to expect, but I was happy with the outcome. There are many long and short trails for walking and exploring. Some of the trails have grasses way over your head so its fun!! Always something new just around the bend. Bicycles and pets are welcome and we didn't have to worry about my grandson, Christopher, and cars. He was pedaling back and forth and having lots of fun!! I definitely recommend Cattus Island!!

Nice Easy Walk

By Mike B |

Walked this flat dirt rd. in Aug. 2012. It can be done in sneakers, it's about 1 mi. to a very small beach that opens up to a bay. There was only 1 picnic table when I was there. About .5 mi. is wide open with marsh on both sides & it was pretty buggy & hot. There is a nice nature center also. I'll do it in the Fall next time.

So diverse is the beauty

By BibsAnn |

the trails are well maintained. You can be in a forest, and then in a swamp, and then on the beach and a marsh all on one trail. You will often see deer and the osprey are returning. The egrets, herons, and red winged blackbirds are plentiful from now until winter.

the nature center is a added bonus; very kid-friendly

Great Place For anything!!

By Rocco R |

Our family always comes for walks, to look for animals, and more. There is so much to do, but the only down side is the ticks. But, if you spray up, you should be fine. There is a building that has animals and other exhibits that are great for the kids. I completely recommend if you love the outdoors!!

Beautiful Park!

By Gail F |

My husband and I enjoyed Cattus Island very much recently. The trails are well maintained and not too difficult. The new nature center is fantastic. They were feeding the turtles when we were there so we joined in. I do hear the ticks can be bad so be sure to dress appropriately and spray yourself ahead of time. The views are breathtaking! Great for bird watchers.

nice trails

By aviron l |

very interesting park. Start on the rebuilt boardwalk on the way to the visitors center and from there you can pick the trail you like. The blue trail have a very nice view of the water and across. The yellow is nice but watch when its wet.A lot of choices.

Great environmental center

By gostartraveler |

Cooper Environmental Center very informative. Great window for bird spotting (complete with binoculars), some displays are at or below eye level, which is great for kids. Has a little bit of everything - displays on aquatic life as well as various animals and wildlife in the area. Butterfly garden next to center also great to look at and stop. Easy to get to, lots of parking.

Nice Trails. Check for ticks!!

By Polaroids & Drinkin Stories |

Some great short trails that if you wish can lead you out to stunning views of the bay. A long but tight beach also awaits you near the end of the main trail. I also took the loop Scout Island trail which can offer you some added seclusion if you're looking for it. But beware of ticks. I sat on a small beach area off the Scout Island trail and noticed a tick almost immediately crawling towards me. Then another. I was planning on sitting there for awhile but that made me think twice. There's a bathroom out at the end by the beach and before the Scout Island trail. But that's about it. They could really use one at the parking lot at least.

Great park!

By ERits |

We walk our dog here every day.. There are lots of well-marked trails and beautiful views. Well maintained. Great seasonal events.

great place to relax and stroll with the dog, kids, or special someone!

By luv2travel1229 |

I live local so I visit this park often, usually to exercise my dog and just enjoy the scenary which is spectacular. When my kids were younger it was their favorite place to go to be outside and explore all that nature offers. Be sure to bring bug spray, sun lotion and good walking shoes! If the weather is nice bring a bathing suit and towel and enjoy the beach!

A perfect piece of nature

By Erin M |

Cattus Island is one of my favorite places to walk out to the beach. Good walk and nice, peaceful spot by the water. Nature center and other trails are great too. Playground area is small but nice for young kids. Nature center is kid oriented as well.

Nice preservation sanctuary

By Inspire2957 |

Nice hiking and bike trails, playground and picnic area. We visited on a holiday so the main building was closed but we still enjoyed the visit.

By Frednia B |

Went on school trips with my children and they really enjoyed it.

Pretty scenery

By fi0nac0 |

Nice walk but stay on trails as the ticks are really bad. Free parking, can bike the trails if desired.

wonderul place to just relax

By markat3 |

went there a couple of times. last time we went they were taking donations for Sandy. They were collecting christmas trees to rebuild dunes from Sandy. There has been some damage from the storm however they will be ready for the spring summer season I am sure. take the nature paths and walk to the water. watch birds have a picnic

Interesting area on the back side of a natural barrier beach bay

By Peter H |

Unusual natural area with hiking and running trails. The Nature Center was badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy and will not open again until spring 2016. There are a lot of naturalist led programs for the public on weekends, and schools during the week. No swimming, but there is a canoe/kayak launch area. This area has a serious problem with ticks & mosquitos, so bring a good spray. It is easily accessed only a few miles from the beautiful NJ beaches.

A little surprise!

By Pathfinder800971 |

We had the distinct pleasure of listening to a lecture about the changing shoreline of Cattus Island and a bit of its history. It was fascinating and the speaker was top notch. If you want a walk on the wild side and to experience what the entire bay coast looked like back then, take a step back and time and visit the park. The trails are very clearly marked and are generally smooth walking. Even on a horrible, cold day in January, the park (which is free) was full of visitors. Enjoy it - we did!

Natural and beautiful

By Bill T |

This is a great park for adults and children. The nature trails take you though wetlands and woodlands. Great for walking and biking. And guess what, it's free.

Accessible while still being outdoors

By Dana P |

With cement trails and dirt trails, this park makes nature accessible to everyone. Beautiful landscapes...makes for an easy stroll on a nice day. The Environmental Center is fun for smaller kids and it has all been recently updated.

A great day trip

By Emily M |

The Park has a very large parking lot. There is a butterfly garden and there use to be a learning center that is currently closed (as well as several trails) because of Hurricane Sandy. Outside of the center they do still have some fun animal and tree facts that engage the younger crowd. Behind the center is an observation deck so one can look far over the marshes before walking deeper into them. One main trail leads away that is flat but with a good view of the marsh land that ends at a little beach n the bay. But beware of the Jelly fish!

Lovely place to spend an afternoon

By mjntr |

Great place for a stroll or a more vigorous work out. Presently, the Nature Center is closed due to damage from Super Storm Sandy but don't let that stop you from visiting! Be sure to bring a camera the views are lovely.

Could be 5 if not for the ticks

By Joe R |

I love this park, but I'm limited to hiking off the beaten path in the winter only, due to the tick problem. I have come back infested multiple times, but the trails are great otherwise. And if you stay on the main road it's not a problem any time of year.

Favorite park in Ocean County

By CBaz128 |

Have come here many times, before and after Hurricane Sandy for walks and photographs. It's our favorite park in Ocean County. Several trails are available. Love to come see the Osprey, heron and egrets. We have seen some wonderful sunsets bayside. The bugs can be bad in the summer, so we enjoy spring and fall walks. I've even taken walks after snowfall and when the bay is frozen. Winter can be a wonderful time for solace there. I've entered and walked the park from both entrances, one from Cattus Island Road and the other from Brandon Road. The renovated Cooper Environmental Center since Sandy is very nice. The butterfly garden is an additional treat. Wear protection against ticks and mosquitos. Good place to take kids to learn about the environment and wildlife. Great place to go for a run if you're a runner.

Hiking with my family

By Davepuff68 |

Beautiful hiking trails leading to the ocean bay enjoying nature with the family also good for biking or walking your dogs there's also a educational building on insects local wildlife and trees!

Great place

By monmouthprof |

This is the best place on a clear day. So open and clear that you can forget where you are. Free admission with open trails for bikes and walking.

great park for hiking

By Moshe Stempel |

I just visited this park today to hike on some trails. If you like hiking in a natural setting, this park is for you. They have lots of long trails to walk on.

Very Nice Visit

By TomWilson |

A great palce to visit. Very beautiful. Many interesting trails on, and around the bay. Great for hiking, biking anbd dog walks. Watch out for nasty flies in the summer.

Out of the way but great place to visit.

By JoAnne P |

My favorite aspect of this parks the nature center- although geared for youngsters to understand the eco systems , adults can learn and enjoy, too. A naturalist is on duty and very helpful and informative. Many special programs which require pre-registration. This is also a great place to hike (bring insect repellent).

Great nature park

By Rick C |

This is a great place to hike and enjoy the natural areas of the Barnaget Bay.
It is completely free. Free parking too.

One warning. Be sure to have insect repellent in the warmer weather Months. Especially for ticks.

Fun in the Sun (and the Shade!)

By Jim T |

Oh my stars and garters, where to begin!?!? Cattus Island County Park is truly a magical place! I can vividly remember the first time I set foot in this natural wonder...it was about three years ago and my wife Jane and I were leaving Cost Cutters, both of us in a grouchy mood! You see, they were out of marble notebooks! Jane had tried to convince me that a spiral notebook had the same functionality but, as you know, that's just silliness! But try telling that your wife! Husbands, am I right ;)! Well, we were squabbling like a pair of old hens when suddenly, my eyes met with a wooden sign set back amongst the flora and fauna of Cattus Island Road. "Cattus Island Park, Ocean County Park System, Cooper Environmental Center" the sign read. Well, as a bit of an environmental center "buff", I suggested Jane and I cool down by driving through. WELL, "cool down" was an understatement because my life was truly changed by that decision! Cattus Island Park is a breathtaking modern Eden conveniently located across from a Norkus Foodtown. The sights, the sounds...even the smells!!! I felt like a boy again, walking the nature trails with Scoutmaster Lundy (God rest his soul) during my days in Webelo Troop #4953 (Nutley, NJ). Jane even convinced me to pet a SNAKE in the Visitor's Center! EEEK! (Special thanks to Ranger Cal to teaching not to be afraid). Did you know snakes aren't even slimy? I certainly didn't...until my afternoon at Cattus Island Park. I still venture back twice a week...although the snake petting was CERTAINLY a one-time only adventure :)! I would recommend Cattus Island to ANYONE, both young and young at heart. Be sure to wear your long pants and high socks however, as there is an active (and hungry :0)!) tick community here! Cattus Island is truly a special place, filled with special people, and you will have a special experience there! I guarantee it or my name isn't Marty!!! Just kidding, that's a joke I tell as my name is Jim :)

Loved the solitude....

By L A F |

Had a lovely walk to the very natural beach area. Easy hike, nice firm path (I wore sandals). The butterfly garden wasn't really in full form this early in the season (June), but was under way. The nature center was closed (since hurricane Sandy) with no definate time to reopen. Some of the wooden paths were also closed. Bikes had not been replaced, so no option to borrow.... bring your own. This place was so peaceful and I really enjoyed it. It was free too... nice!

One of the best places to walk and play.

By Suzanne K |

Whether you walk, bike, run or just want a beautiful place to enjoy, this is a great place. Playgrounds for the kids and secret little paths to enjoy nature. Many different types of wildlife. Osprey, snowy white egrets, blue heron and many more. There are duck blinds to hde in. If it's just rained wear your mud shoes. Gorgeous views of Barnegat Bay. You won't be disappointed.

Intresting nature preserve, well organized for hiking.

By podrozniczka60 |

Winter hiking in Cattus Island County park is interesting and pleasant in spite of low temperatures. The views are stunning even in February especially in the Bay area. The trail system is easy to navigate and well marked. The maps are easily available both on line and in Cooper Environmental Center.
There is ample parking in a few locations. The main parking in near the Cooper Environmental Center. The Center houses stunning nature exhibits and interesting collection of both live and stuffed animals. A lot of educational and interactive stations for children ! Naturally the butterfly garden was not open in February but so many other areas were frequented in February by a surprising number of visitors.
I imagine during the summer the available free loaner bikes and discovery backpacks must be very popular.
Our hike being on a cold freezing day of winter - we appreciated easy access to WARM, clean bathrooms.
We are planning to be back for more hiking during the warmer time of the year.

My favorite park in the area.

By Gerilyn B |

The trails are clearly marked. You can go off into the woods easily. Great view of the bay. Proximity to town makes it an easy drive. Dog friendly - what more do you need?

Inviting short trails

By shaluhe |

Loved the main trail and the views, with all the intriguing side trails! Plenty of parking. You can bring your doggie, too.

Peaceful sanctuary

By erica d |

I highly recommend Cattus Island to anyone who loves nature and wildlife. There is a visitors center with all types of snakes, frogs, turtles, and fish native to NJ.
There is lookout where you can watch egrets and herons fishing in the salt marsh.
There is also a boardwalk that leads you through the marsh to the bay. The people who work there are experts on wildlife and can answer all your questions. There is also a butterfly garden that you can sit and watch the bees and butterflies enjoy all the flowers! There are bathrooms and plenty of parking.

hidden Gem

By Donna B |

The minute I drive through the entrance, I forget I’m living in the over crowded town of Toms River. This place brings me such peacefulness. Whether I’m bringing my grandkids to explore or just needing to escape somewhere that makes me happy, Cattus Island is my blessing. I’m only minutes from here and frequently visit. Doesn’t matter the weather. When it snows the trails are stunning and when it’s warm and sunny the paths are filled with beauty and sounds of nature just as happy to be part of it.

Amazing!

By miriamlkwd |

really nice park! the nature center is amazing and they give out bikes, cool hiking backpacks and more! def recommend!

I love Cattus Island

By Erica S |

Always been and will always been a favorite. I used to live in Brick, NJ and would go to Cattus Island at least monthly. There are many trails and beautiful scenery. Whenever I visit the area, I always try to visit there. There are marshes, woodsy trails, sandy trails. Pet friendly too!

Don't go off the main trail

By JohnHelenC |

Being in Tom's River on a warm Saturday afternoon with several hours to kill while my spouse attended a shower, I visited Cattus Island Park for a self only birding excursion. As a first time visitor, I stopped at the Visitor Center where a friendly park agent produced a map and indicated the route that most newbies take. He told me of a nesting owl and a Seaside Sparrow that had been recently sighted. After a lap around the Visitor Center deck I took the trail. This was a highway sized lane which led through a wetlands with plentiful Osprey, Great Egrets, Tree Swallows and several Snowy Egrets. The trail flowed into a scenic coniferous woodlands and then through a small deciduous section. After passing a small clearing the trail ended on a beach near the end of the point. As the weather was delightful, many happy families were enjoying the park, the path and the beach. There were families playing ball, couples walking and infants in strollers. Since my main interest was birding, I opted to leave the main trail and followed the orange blazes on a loop around the tip of the point. This was a small photogenic trail which was partially small wood bridges and partially bare dirt. It led through more wetlands and past low shrubs. On this section of the trail I was alone. Consequently, I turned up a half dozen species that I did not see on the main trail. After completing the loop on returned on the main trail to the Visitor Center and parking lot. At this point my main regret was that I had not carried a second lens with me for scenic shots.

When I returned to pick up my spouse at the end of the shower, I was invited inside to recount my adventure to people who frequent the park. I got several strange looks and then several people came up to me to pick ticks off my neck and hair. When I returned home a detailed examination found another trio. At this point I remembered the park agent saying, "There are no ticks on the trail." Not having encountered a tick for years, It had not registered at the time that he was saying, "There are ticks here but not on the main trail." All told, eight of the wretched multi-legged small beasts had found their way onto my body. None connected.

Lesson learned, stay on the main trail or use tick repellant.

One of my favorite places

By Cbaz128 |

Lots of trails and an interesting place any time of the year, although during the summer it can be very buggy. I've seen heron, egrets and Osprey there, but have yet to see deer or foxes. It's very peaceful and a good place to walk, run, ride bikes or take pictures. There are lots of activities and programs for kids. In the winter, it's a particularly interesting place to go because of the solitude and a great place to clear your head if you're seeking peace and quiet, especially if the bay is frozen.

Great find

By bigglow |

Beautiful park with a well established boardwalk type walking path to visit. There is an Educational Center as well with tanks and explanations of local animals. The staff is absolutely wonderful and so easy to talk to. They do activities with the kids and are very knowledgeable about the park as well. You can also hike and bike and there is a pathway down to the bay if you want to do a one mile walk.

Best Kept Secret

By bbhigs4 |

Cattus Island is a hidden gem of the Jersey Shore. The park has countless hiking trails and a wonderful nature center for the kids. We visit the park frequently throughout the year.

Great place to explore

By Steven C |

I take my dog for walks here. It's along the bay with trails and even a small beach on the bay. A lot of the damage from super storm Sandy has been repaired.

By iydkmigthtky |

Love to hike through Cattus Island. Great place to bird watch as well. May through September is perfect to go!

Great hidden park

By Sally D |

Take a walk or bike ride and get outside. This hidden gem in Toms River NJ shouldn't be missed! Great trails and nature center.

A Hidden Gem

By Christopher C |

What a beautiful park. They have trails to walk with gorgeous views of the bay. Be sure to stop by the Cooper Environmental Center. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. We had questions about some plants we saw and the naturalist who helped us was able to tell us exactly what we had seen. Wonderful displays in there as well including : fish, snakes, turtles, frogs and plenty of hands-on games and activities for the kids. Best of all... everything is FREE. They will even loan you a bike, a nature backpack and a fishing net for free. Definitely worth a visit for any age. They told me that they are open all year. The Cooper Environmental Center is open from 8 to 4:30 and the park is open from dawn to dusk - seven-days-a-week. Oh, I almost forgot the beautiful Butterfly Garden.

Nature walk and reptile visit

Hideaway

By Ken A |

Going here is a necessary function for a balanced life. Been visiting for nearly 30 years, this has been a much needed respite from daily drudgery.

Love it here... but ticks!

By Joanne Y |

This park is really nice... right on the bay, nice breeze, clean and informative. Great for walking your dog on the numerous trails. Do your best to stay on the main trails and check for ticks afterwards. Due to the deer here, there are tons of ticks. Walk east and walk to the bay beach. The environmental center is really educational with some nice exhibits. Bring the kids...they’ll like it!

You love this is you like the outdoors.

By slengyeljr |

Nice to go to any day. Great for walking. Weekends have tour guded walks. Great for girl scouts and boy scout troops to visit.

Great place to visit

By Michael H |

My wife and I found this park and had a great day just walking around it. It is beautiful here and a lot of trees and plants are marked with information to teach us about nature.

Cattus Island County Park, Toms River, NJ

By BossJersey |

It is not an island in the true sense. The body of water to the left is Mosquito Cove.
There are several boardwalks for hiking or biking over the marsh with great views of the wetlands and across to Barnegat Bay. Be sure to bring your binoculars and camera.

The Cooper Environmental Center is a major resource for conservation and education, featuring a 5,000 square foot building with an eighty seat meeting room, major exhibit area, and various work areas. It features many exhibits and activities.

One ecosystem, located in Cattus Island Park, is a maritime upland pine/oak forest, which consists mostly of oak trees and pine trees, such as the pitch pines and the short leaf pines. Even though Cattus Island Park is a maritime forest, within its pine/oak forest, one can find many of the same shrubs and animal species that are native to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey.

Cattus Island Park also contains freshwater wetlands. These wetlands are dominated by hardwood trees such as Red Maple or Swamp Maple, Sour Gum or Tupelo and a wide variety of others. There are a few small stands of living Atlantic White Cedar located in some of the wetland areas. However, in this area, large stands of dead Atlantic white cedar also exist. They have been standing dead since the 1930s. Prior to the 1930s, the northern part of the Barnegat Bay, where Cattus Island is located, was mainly fresh water.

After the Point Pleasant Canal was constructed and the Manasquan inlet improved, saltwater from the ocean infiltrated into the Northern portion of the bay. As a result, the Atlantic white cedar, which is an obligate freshwater species, was killed.

Another ecosystem that thrives within the park is a vast track of salt marsh, which contains several species of Spartina grasses. It is from these salt marshes that Cattus Island gets part of its name. Several times a year, the marshes flood, as a result of snowmelt, spring/summer storms or high tides. During the floods, the second bit of upland is completely inaccessible. Hence, it becomes an 'island.

"The Owl House"

By Mark S |

So many memories from growing up and being able to share them with my children. Fun interactive displays that the children can learn and daily classes that focus on different animals in their displays. My son while three fondly named it the "owl House"

Beautiful

By bbkcookieshu |

You don't feel like you are in Toms River when you are here. Great, flat trails and very nice interpretive center.

Delightful

By Basya K |

This park has it all: pleasant walking paths, varied landscape, a variety of flora and fauna, lovely scenery, play area for the kids. I'd like to see hand sanitizer in the portable rest rooms.

Full of Natural Beauty

By Aklouro |

We just spent the day here for the first time and I loved every minute of it. Start with the environmental center. It has some of the best educational exhibits on local wildlife I've seen in this area as well as live animals presentations. Plenty of observation areas teeming with birds and a peaceful butterfly and hummingbird garden. But the best thing was the trail cutting directly through the wetlands leading to a tranquil beach along the Barnegat Bay. I felt a million miles away from home. We saw as many different species today as we would see on a trip to the zoo. And it's all free. This is my new happy place!

Wonderful walking trails

By DDiceRC |

We visited Cattus Island State Park on the spur of the moment while in Toms River. The park is beautiful, with secluded nature trails of varying lengths and challenge running throughout the park. Some of the trails have signs near certain plants and tress describing them for informational purposes. There are lovely views of the water, the marshes, and the pine forests. When we visited the visitor's center was still closed for renovation, so I don't know what that adds to the experience. I would return to the park just to hike the nature trails.

A recent visit to Cattus Island County Park

By John C |

Cattis Island County Park is very rewarding, especially now that the visitor center has been reopened after several years of restoration after severe damage from Hurricane Sandy. There's plenty of easy, lovely trails to walk and a central scenic road (no cars) one can ride a bicycle on. There are almost magical little viewpoints and exquisitely knarled old cypress? trees here and there along the way, and fragrant pine stands and reeds just great. The new visitor center is also terrific, with live display of local reptiles at both eye level for little kids (we'll be bringing our grandchildren there soon) and adults alike. There are also stuffed animals such as foxes, owls, ospreys, etc., etc. and two walls have huge photo diorama of the park and touch and see exhibit and various informative programs as well. etc. Highly, highly recommended !

Great place to walk on a cool cay.

Enjoyable park to walk or bike. Beautiful butterfly garden. Building to see live turtles, fish and such and also stuffed birds and other wildlife. Playground is also in park. Haven't gotten a chance to see the new "boardwalks" if they have opened since the Sandy Repairs.

Beautiful place to take a walk right on the bay great for bike rides or taking your dog for a walk or just to go out by yourself for a walk very nice worth the visit and there's a nature center there also

Gorgeous, tranquil scenery

By Hope Susan B |

Great place to bike. Wonderful for photography. If I had had the time, I could have walked all the way to the water, but I had less than an hour to spend there. What scenery I did see was gorgeous & photogenic. I intend to return when I have at least 2-3 hours to spend there.

Safe Haven for birds and deer..

By rakamo |

I take family and friends over there by boat. It's quiet, peaceful while taking in the different birds. The beach is small , but this is quite a large park. You can also drop anchor in the lagoon or sail around the other side and do the same. My dislike is when the breeze is coming off the land and I have a war with the GREEN HEADED FLIES !!

Tranquil

Enjoy Nature At It's Best!

By Mike P |

If exercise is in your regular cards, you must wear yourself out in walking the never ending trails at Cattus Island County Park. They've worked out special little surprises that will help your visit be particularly fun and challenge your creativity. We were pleased to see that the park has survived Sandy, aside from some remnants of natures trimmings resulting from the floods. Try this as a family event! You are sure to return!

Ticks

By Nancie W |

This is a nice place but don't bring your dog, it is full of ticks and we had to come home and throw all our clothes in the dryer and leave dog outside while we washed him and got rid of ticks.

Take your binoculars, camera, walking shoes, water bottle and curiosity!

We visited this county park on a sunny Saturday in early October. The main visitor's center is closed due to storm damage so we made our way to the program building looking for a bathroom and a person who could provide information ( no signs told us where we might find a person connected to the park, maps etc). There was no parking available at the program building so we made our way back to the original parking lot near the entrance. Ample parking there but only port-a-potties. All trails are fairly level and meant to be accessible for any level of hiker. The blue trail is the longest at about 2.2 miles and takes you through wetlands, marshes, beaches and forest. VERY beautiful. There is a boardwalk through an area covered on both sides with phragmites that grow tall above your head and swish in the breeze. We saw turtles and egrets ( snowy and greater) on our walk that day, few butterflies. There is a butterfly garden, not too well maintained at this time of year, right outside the closed visitor center. Be sure to take the orange hidden beach trail, an offshoot from the blue trail. It leads you to a lovely sand beach, calm waters and a few benches and picnic tables. We finally happened upon a trailer set to one side of the closed visitor center where a park guide was available to give us a map and to allow us (kindly) to use the bathroom in the trailer (whew!). There are picnic tables near the entrance parking lot but you can also put a blanket down in any number of grassy areas if you wish to picnic. Take a trash bag to carry out your trash. A suggestion: print out the park map and any trail information from the website since it is possible you will not get this information once you are at the park. The website is very informative ( but neglects to mention the lack of toilet facilities ). Enjoy the beauty of this gem of a park. Note: bids are out for money to make repairs and we were told that the county hopes to begin repairs in November or December. Perhaps there will be bathrooms in the late spring?

So glad that our local park has been repaired and restored after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy five years ago!

Beautiful Walking

By PDWood79 |

This is a very lovely park with different walks through out the area. Wetlands was my favorite. Saw different birds and reptiles which was enjoyable. The butterfly garden and tour was both beautiful and knowledgeable thanks to our guide. The visits centre is also well kept with some nice displays. Plenty of benches for a lunch outside.

A great experience

By Anita Z |

A perfect day to take the kids or just yourself! They have bike trails, nature trails we didn't get to go into the Nature center this trip.. We have been there at least 40 times over the past few years, but it's very educational for the kids. A perfect place for nature lovers.

Hidden gem

By Denise D |

Cattus Island is a favorite spot of mine. The park runs right along the bay so the trails make for great walking, jogging or running. It's a great spot to see wildlife, to have a picnic, etc.

Wonderful location, great trails and a comprehensive nature center!

By os101kingos |

Cattus Island is a gem in our neighborhood. Many lovely walks to be had, a beautiful butterfly garden with all of the plants marked for reference, and at the end of the walk there's a beautiful bay beach as a reward. Great observations spots, a playground and plenty of parking. Dedicated, friendly employees as well, it's always a pleasure to visit and I recommend it to everyone from families to those needing a quiet escape or leisurely walk through the woods.

My only regret is that there aren't ten parks like this in every town!

Enjoy nature and walk

By busydeb7 |

Interesting facts inside the main building and alot of trails to enjoy a great hike. Picnic or playground adventure, you will love this quiet out of the way park.

Great little gem

By roame_da_earth |

I hike through Cattus Island on a fairly regular basis and I always enjoy it. If you take all the trails there are at aleast 8 miles to hike. This is on the marsh with beautiful scenery and a lot of wild life including deer, Osprey, owls and turtles just to name a few. There is also a wild life nature center that you can go and explore along with a butterfly garden. You should check out both if you go. Also worth mentioning, you can bring your bike out on the trails. All of the trails are well maintained and many included portions of boarded trail. Near the parking area there are places to picnic and a small jungle gym for the kids. The main trail leads you back to a small beach on the bay. The down side, there are many, many ticks so defintely wear bug spray.

Great little park

This park is a great place to bring friends, your dog, family members, to bike, etc. They have a great nature conservatory, and in October, they have a great little terror walk.

Great Place to Visit

By BeachBumGreg |

My girlfriend and I visit Cattus Island often, normally with her dog. There are several trails in this park, some are short, others are pretty lengthy. It's a good idea to have a map of the park with you if you are unfamiliar with a trail and don't want to end up deep in the woods semi-lost with the sun setting fast like we did, but that's another story. If you take the main trail right up the middle you will cross over salt marsh, a small wooded island, and end up on a small sandy beach at the tip of the park that offers a great view of Barnegat Bay. It's a great quiet place to relax. Other trails allow you to explore Maritime Forest and offer ample opportunity for bird watching. There is a handicap-accessible trail near the parking lot. This is one of those places you can go just for an hour, or spend most of the day depending on what trails you decide to take.

If you are there in the warm weather, I suggest wearing bug-repellent. Mosquitoes and Ticks are abundant so just be cautious.

Nice walking trails.

A sweet piece of quiet in the middle of the Shore's hustle and bustle. Easy to find and lots of different views/experiences.

good for young children

Beautiful park to walk

By ken j |

We walked out along the road to the tip on a windy fall day. This is a totally beautiful place, with water on many sides. The nature center is also well-done, many exhibits of local fauna. Don't miss that.

one of my favorite places

By sheltercove |

I live about a mile from the park. We ride our bikes in the park and often walk or jog the nature trails. As it is on the Barnegat Bay it is classified as a maritime forest. You can see deer and osprey in the park. I particularly like hiking in the park during the winter months. The park took a major hit from super storm Sandy. Many of the boardwalks were destroyed. The nature center was flooded and as of this report is still not back on line. All of the animals were moved to another park before the storm. The orange trail which is one of my favorites is still out of commission. I often visit the park by kayak. Since I live on the water, it is only a short paddle for me. Just this morning I was able to observe a nesting pair of osprey. Many volunteers have put in long hours to bring the park back to It's former glory. It is worth the visit. Please place trash in the proper receptacles.

By jimmysoups |

A spot to go when you need that hour away from the hustle and bustle and dont have time to go far. Park the car and take a quiet walk through a few acres of what the bay area used to be like, great spot for a long stretch with your dog.

Back to Nature

By Steven E |

My favorite trail is off the beaten path(don't forget the Deep Woods OFF) along the sandy beach to the tip of lands end. I don't know what if anything is left after Sandy. You may have to navigate across a creek, but it's worth it. You can pick up a Sub or Sushi & Drinks at Shop Rite before the trip, but please don't litter.

Comfortable and quaint!!!!

Great to Walk and Photograph

By sharih |

Great place to walk - clean trails and beautiful views. Saw plenty of people taking photographs as there is so much wildlife and a beautiful beach. Great for a picnic.

Little bit for everyone.

By krocking123 |

This place has a little but for everyone. The visitor center has air conditioning and many tanks with live animals. Lots of information to be learned about the jersey coast. There is a small butterfly garden, with real wild butterflies! Hiking trails that’s hard packed good for maintain bikes and sandy trails. We spent about 2 hours there. That includes a walk out to the furthest point and back. It’s a great spot for an drizzle or overcast kinda day.

Boardwalks on nature trails

By Christine M |

We arrived when the sun was just beginning to go down and this was on a cold November day. I was amazed at the numbers of cardinals and various other woodland creatures. I visited the park mainly for shooting photos and I was very happy with the outcome!

Nice walking trails for you and your dogs!

By Fred M |

Great viewing areas for seeing the wetlands and nature. It also sponsors sightseeing cruises in the summer. The visitor center has lots of great things to see.

Close to home

By CATT722 |

This county park is great to visit to walk, run or bike on the trails. It's also a good place to kayak. In the hot summer months mosquitoes can be a definite problem.

Can’t get too much of this Nature Stuff!!

By drdecay1 |

Daughter and Son both donated time to this wonderful local sanctuary. A definite breath of fresh air in our otherwise congested lives.

Outdoor excersize

By lmlafferty1180 |

Location is close to home and easily accessible. Paths are naturally made, which is pleasant. Beautiful views of the bird sanctuaries. Wildlife more active toward the evening hours which is always fun. My biggest complaint however, is that because of the blog that surrounds it, the quantity of large flies is so offputting that it becomes very quickly unbearable to continue walking through the area.

However, if this doesn’t bother you and you except it for what it is, it is really a lovely walk.

Bike riding

By 71Duster |

Great park yo walk or ride. A lot of trails to follow. Bring your binoculars with you especially if your a bird watcher all types. Very relaxing place to visit. Open Dusk till Dawn. Would recommend.

Two Great Visits

By Samba |

We had visited for the first time yesterday , driving up from our summer home in Cape May. We thought the park was lovely, talked to another birder who was very helpful and saw several nice birds. We were delighted that so many species of smaller birds were easily seen off the Environmental Center deck. They were feeding at the feeders and flitting around in the trees and bushes. We were able to get several nice photos of them in those trees and bushes.

We were so happy with the sightings that we returned today but initially were disappointed as the little birds were not there when we arrived. The day was cloudy and the feeders were empty. So we took a nice long walk and when we returned to the Environmental Center; we were surprised and delighted. Despite the feeders being empty; the birds had come back and at least a dozen species were in trees and bushes again.

So Cattus Island County Park has been checked as a must return to site. We will recommend it to other bird photographers we know in New Jersey.

Great place to take the grandchildren

By CAMazza |

It is a great place for the kids to run free without fear. There are walking paths that take you out to the bay - a great place for them to explore! After the walk we stopped the nature center another great place for the kids to investigate. The displays are fantastic!!

Excellent local spot for a nature walk!

By Bhoja |

You have probably driven by this place and never even knew it existed. The "Cattus Island" sign (on Fischer Blvd in Toms River) is very innocuous and in no way indicates the beautiful nature center and lush expansive island that lies behind it.

After Super Storm Sandy they had to redo the nature center. I went last week for the first time since it's renovation, and they have done a fantastic job! Before you go into the nature center they have a great butterfly garden outside. Then inside the building you are in for a treat. First of all, the staff at the front desk is really helpful and really friendly. They will answer any and all questions and make sure that your time spent is worthwhile.
Walk around the center and you'll notice all of the exhibits are interactive. They have a touch tank with local animals, and lots of fascinating and beautifully rendered displays about all the different wildlife in the area. We noticed that they offer nature talks and walks throughout the week and we can't wait to come back and experience these...especially when they let people help feed some of the animals!

Okay, now you're ready to step outside to begin your expiration of the island. There are maps throughout the island which will help guide you so you can pick and choose wherever you would like to go. They have different color path which makes it easy to find different spots such as the amazing rustic beaches.

The island is spotless...quiet but for the sounds of the wildlife and the gentle breezes. There are marshes, tons of different birds, and a huge variety of trees and flowers.

You are welcome to have any kind of day you'd like here. I have packed a picnic and enjoy a romantic few hours here with my gf.
I have also come with a buddy and hiked for hours. I've seen people bicycling and that looks awesome, also.

One gets the feeling the whole island is deserted and you have it all to yourself. It's such a tranquil and peaceful place. Yet everywhere you look it is actually teeming with birds large and small, frogs, turtles, streams, marshes, woods, etc.

Right in your backyard...and did I mention it is completely FREE?

What are you waiting for? Make your plan and go experience this immaculate hidden gem.

Nice park on the bay.

By PhotosFromNature |

Cattus Island County Park is a very nice park with several trails you can hike out to the bay. You can generally see shore birds and ospreys in the spring/summer time. During the summer the flies can be bad also you need to cover up for ticks. You should put on some insect repellent before heading out. The visitor center is nice to visit with live local wildlife.

Peaceful

By Angrodjhg |

We have been coming here for 35 years. Even though Hurricane Sandy caused building and trail damage the park has weathered the storm and remains a wonderful place to relax, walk the trails, birdwatch (which was totally amazing yesterday) and simply hang out in the little coves. Especially if you are able to canoe/kayak around the perimeter on Barnegat or Silver Bay.

A hidden gem in the Toms River area

By Barbara B |

A hidden gem in the Toms River area. I lived in the area for years before becoming aware of this park through my children's field trips. A great, decent size park that has the woods, beach, pines in its most natural settings. Love, love, love this park. Several hiking trails options are available. You can walk for a couple of miles within the park and see woods and the bay. A must see when in the area. Highly recommend!

Great little park!

By DanielleTheWanderer |

My family has visited Cattus Island often. The visitors' center always has something to excite interest--either in the garden outside or the critters and displays inside. The trails are well marked and great for strolling. The terrain is varied--you'll walk through high rushes on raise board walks, past some open marsh, through some open forest, and out to the bay beach. Dogs (on leashes, of course) are allowed. Do be careful, though, to check yourself over for ticks after your visit, as Ocean County is a lyme disease hot-spot. The park also offers many interesting programs--call ahead to see if you can participate in seining the bay or some nature center activity. Plenty of parking with a small playground and picnicking available. Flush toilets in the nature center.

A Jersey Shore Treasure

Cattus Island is located with the beautiful surroundings of Silver Bay and Barnaget Bay. Accessible by land or by sea with so many beautiful trails. Whether you like to hike or bike ride there is no limit and you never know what you will see - so much amazing wildlife.

Nice Place to Visit

By Dennis W |

I've been there many, many times over the years. It suffered greatly in hurricane Sandy. It is on it's way back. The Nature Center was totally destroyed. Several of the nature walks have been out. Standby for an update once they get through rebuilding.

Nature Trails & Bird watching

I recently discovered this park and it is a great place for walking, with marked trails & bird watching and picnicking. Nice water views and information plaques regarding trees and park information.

wetlands paradise

By funlovin_11 |

Cattus Island is a great place for hiking; Be sure to wear your bug spray because the bugs are out even in the daytime! Some of the trails are a bit overgrown with thin willowy leaves that brush against your body and will cause itching for days. (You can easily avoid these trails, there are so many others) However, it is a still a great place to get in tune with nature...take a walk....watch the birds, especially the egrets and osprey. ...feel the cool breezes off the Barnegat Bay. The nature center was an excellent display of wildlife indigenous to the area, but is currently closed due to damage from Superstorm Sandy.

A favorite coastal park, very dense plantlife

By worktotravel14 |

I do quite a bit of hiking in NJ and this is a favorite. I love being in the coastal areas a literally getting a little bit of everything - beach, marshland, wooded areas. It is fairly busy and has a nice, little business center. Unfortunately, the water stalls were not working which we found out after our 7-ish mile hike. There are many paths. Make sure to check for ticks this time of year as there is thick brush.

I love taking my dog here and finding a trail to follow. They are mostly flat and easy to find & follow, making for a great outing for us!

Bigger than it seems.

By W0lfgang_ster |

I run here about 3x a week. From parking lot down the main trail to the end is very close to a mile. There are many ancillary trails(very well marked), you can spend a lot of time here. Some aren't traveled so there is a better chance for wildlife. Along the main trail there is a wide open view to see egrets, ospreys, seagulls and ducks. I run past some people with serious photo-gear! There's a playground and picnic area along with a newly renovated nature center(thanks sandy) done well by Gavan construction. Overall great park, one of best in area.

Free
Paved parking lot
Daylight hours of operation
Bathroom at nature center and another porto-john at beach
Family and dog friendly
Watch for ticks
Don't litter and pick up after dog!

Beautiful and fun!

By sarah_2010067 |

My husband and three young children had a wonderful hike here today. We did the gray trail which led directly to the bay. The park was peaceful and beautiful, and my children very much enjoyed playing in the sand when we got to the bay. There is a cute playground as well. An excellent choice for a day in nature. Note: very dog friendly, we loved meeting about 10 super friendly dogs (and their people) during our hike. Also there were longer trails for groups with no small children - our youngest was 4 and had not napped, so we didn't push it beyond the 1 mile hike to the bay.

there is a good nature center there, and they have some bigger events that have other vendors, and educational resources.

A nice afternoon at Cattus

By 2kids2dogs |

I can't believe I haven't known about this park and have been visiting the area for more than 20 years! The nature center was small, but well organized and contained many samples of indigenous wildlife. The trails were very well-marked. I saw herons, osprey and many other birds. There were benches placed at good intervals throughout the trails for resting and watching wildlife. The beach had beautiful views of the sound, osprey nests, fish jumping, etc. The butterfly garden was small, but lovely. Warning: some of the trails have signs about the tick danger. Dress appropriately.

Great for birding

By patti1357 |

I have always known about Cattus Island and have been there many times when my children were young. I just began visiting again, for exercise and my new hobby which is birding. The trails are well marked to see the wildlife and those birds that are shy. I am fulfilling tow goals. 1. Exercise and 2 , seeing birds , taking pictures and really enjoying this new hobby. The trails are clean, there are porta potty's for your needs and there is a nature center/ visitors center which is undergoing renovations now. I would highly recommend it for any adventure. You can also walk all the way down to the beach to enjoy the views

Gotta get out of the house

We came across great parks in our area and started to explore them. Cats Island was just such a nice place to enjoy nature weather you wanted a short walk or a good long one.

Great hiking trails and indoor exhibits for kids and adults

By dwagenb268 |

The park is so convenient and there are many hiking trails, many of which eventually lead to Barnegat Bay. The trails are good year around but especially in the spring and summer. Bilkes and dogs are welcome. The nature center has live snakes, turtles, fish and crabs as well as stuffed animals and birds that are native to that area. My grandchildren love the nature center. My wife often rides her bike there. Everything is free so the price is right, too.

A rare surviving slice of nature in the over-developed Barnegat Bay area. Great for hiking, bird watching, nature hunts, and teaching your children The Jersey Shore isn't just boardwalks and arcades. Just watch out for ticks.

Hike Trials, Beach, Great Park

By DBRTrips |

The park has very nice hiking trials, beach, picnic tables, and plenty of parking.

The Cooper Environmental Center was severally damaged during hurricane Sandy. Plans are
on the way to rebuild the Center. The Pinelands has strict environmental rules, and that is good.
The whole idea is to preserve the Earth, so patience. Meanwhile, enjoy and support the over 500 acres of public park land. Finally, the marine life has been transferred to the Jakes Branch County Park, Toms River, NJ (5 story visitor center, and observation deck. The marine life will stay there until the Cooper Environmental Center is rebuilt.

Family enjoyment

By Aruba891 |

Cattus island has something for everyone. Playground equipment for kiddies. You can go inside building and see exhibits good for all ages. Take a nice stroll along the paths. Bring a bike. Bring a picnic basket

A great little park. Dogs welcome. Walking trails for everyone.

By Suzanne K |

This is a little Ocean County gem. Several trails so unless you're on a main trail you may not see anyone. Flat and easy to navigate for anyone. Dogs on a leash are welcome. Dogs (or anyone else) are not allowed to swim but if you're discrete you can get away with it. It's so hard to find a spot to let your dog have fun. If you're a boater you can access the beach at Mosquitoe cove. Just don't "beach" your boat. Anchor off shore and wade on over. (If the jellyfish aren't there.)
There's a playground for the kids and biking is permitted. The main nature building was severely damaged in hurricane Sandy. But there are bathrooms.
Great sunrises and sunsets.

Always soothing

By totowatony |

My wife and i make it a habit to vist once a week . We walk out the main oath to the end and just sit and watch the birds over the water. Good place to bring the kids. Stop and visit the visiters center. People there are always very helpful. Come see the bee hive!

Another OC Gem

By MissSeaweed |

We lived in Ocean County for three years before we discovered Cattus Island and it is such a wonderful place for nature lovers. There are three or four significant trails, all easy to navigate (i.e., flat terrain). All have great views of the salt marsh and bay areas, and there are blinds along the way for viewing the incredible bird life. We saw ospreys nesting, red-winged blackbirds, many gulls. Beautiful place to observe and experience the bay environment.

Fantastic interactive visitor center that has just reopened. Lots to keep our boys entertained then we also cycled the main path to the sandy beach. A really great place and we will be back to explore much more - looking forward to seeing the butterfly garden grow and also watching the ospreys catching fish!

Always a great place to just get away

By BJohnstonTravel |

This place is great if you love walking through nature and just want to get away from it all. Like any wooded area, there will be a lot of ticks throughout the summer -- so be sure to pick them off when you are leaving. They have a nice new remodeled visitor area as well.

Nice trails through an estuary. Great for bird watching. Very pet friendly location with a well kept roadway leading to the bay. Bring bug spray to keep the pine flys away if you venture off the main path.

A hidden park for those in the know

By N&YinNJ |

This park features walking trails, picnic benches, and other amenities. Many of the trails are in shaded woody areas which is quite nice in the hot weather. Others are in long stretches of open Sandy terrain. Some of the views of the inlet are very lovely.
During the middle of the week it is quite quiet there, and a great place for long meditative walk.

My husband and I love this park. There are a few trails you can choose from, but no matter which you choose, BRING BUGSPRAY!!! We go for walks with our 10 month old son and labrador and enjoy the trail that leads us to the bay. It's great any time of year, but especially summer and fall. I would recommend bringing a water bottle and light snack to stay hydrated and energized if you plan on staying out a while on a hot summer day - there isn't always a ton of shade.

Nice County Park

There is plenty to do at Cattus Island County Park. It's nice to walk all around. There is a playground area that our Granddaughter loved as well as the hike we all did. You can take a short or long hike. There are also historical areas to explore to see how this park was established. You can have a picnic also.

Small Nature Preserve

My wife and I go here to walk by ourselves and with our dogs in non tick season. We have ridden our bikes on most of the trails too. It is a great little place. Much wildlife to see and some amazing sunrises and sunsets!

Easy trails, flat sandy surface. You can easily follow the trails out to the beach. This is an enjoyable shore park
