Amazing scenery. Plenty of activities.

By Craig S |

We kayaked on Trillium lake and dined and hiked near Timberline Falls. Food was great and scenery unparalleled.

Great views

By Roddy66 |

We viewed the mountain from several locations, the best being at Trillium Lake, but Timberline Lodge has great views as well.

A Photographer's Dream

By Charles S |

This impressive mountain Mount Hood is the tallest mountain in Oregan at over 11,000 feet located approx 50 miles from Portland. It has six ski areas and offers the only year-round lift served skiing in North America. It is the first of the six mountain range in Oregan featuring north to south Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry Volcano, Mount Mazama and Mount McLoughlin. It is actually more than a mountain being a volcano having last erupted in 1866. It is a photographer's dream.

Hiding

By Chastity D |

It appears Mt. Hood is bashful. We have been checking in daily since we arrived Wednesday to see if the cloud would clear. Unfortunately this trip out looks like the mountain wins. On a positive note this means I need to come back to see.

Going to the mountain!

By Ann622 |

Just seeing the mountain in the distance from Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA area is breathtaking. The scenic drive to the mountain gives you beautiful views as you drive closer to it. Being from the East Coast, we were astounded at the mountain's height, the snow still on mountain in August and the drive up the mountain to Timberline Lodge. There is much history here, great hiking paths, comfortable chairs to relax in and enjoy the views to the top of the mountain. The lodge provides meals and snacks and a place to poke around if you're not staying there. Great views can be seen from all sides of the lodge. Chairlift rides were running in the summer too. Everyone in our group, young and old, enjoyed the mountain and lodge.

A pretty view

By Laura R |

We saw the mountain from the ski slope area. It is a majestic mountain and I’m sure it is much prettier when it’s snow covered. It was a nice stop on our way home.

The Most Beautiful Moutain in the West.

By MrBill W |

This is one of the most breath taking sites in the Pacific Northwest. I took pictures of the mountain and it did not do it justice, From any angel it was beautiful.

Takes Your Breath Away

By Terry W |

We spent a lovely two hours touring the Timberline Hotel and walking a short piece of the Pacific Rim Trail. The wild flowers were in bloom and the trail was well groomed and a spectacular walk with views of Mt Hood and Mt Jefferson. I would go back again and walk more of the Trail.

Beautiful summer day trip

By Outback S |

This area is so beautiful in summer. There are so many adventures to do. The lake is buzzing and the timberline chalet is worth the drive to the top.

Mount Hood

By shyboy2011 |

Visited here and I was blown away by the fact of how the temperature drops so rapidly as u drive up the mountain... Very beautiful...

Beyond spectacular!!

By Paula G |

A friend at home just reminded me I said I'm not a fan of mountains. Well, not any more! We had clear days providing spectacular views from everywhere. Just beautiful! Pictures from Panorama Point & Trillium Lake.

Excellet hotel. Would definitely stay again.

By Anita H |

This is a perfect place to stay for the Mt. Hood area. The hotel was fairly new so had all the current amenities. This was one of our favorite hotels on a 20 day road trip. The setting is awesome. They had a hot breakfast with lots of options. The room was clean and welcoming and had all the standard amenities. Would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Beautiful Views

By Jill F |

The mountain is beautiful and can be seen from almost anywhere in the area. There are tons of hiking trails and even more mountain biking trails around the area.

Truly Amazing

By heathersU7026GR |

We got to see Mt. Hood up close and from the Sakura Lodge (B&B). What a beautiful mountain both sunset and sunrise. If you love to summer ski, this is the place to be. The views of this mountain and the area around it are BEAUTIFUL!

Drive the loop and go to the lodge

By francetravel |

What a beautiful drive with gorgeous views, farm stands and a lavender farm. We enjoyed going to the lodge and snow as well. The views were great as we stopped for a drink.

Anniversary

By Terry k |

Mt. Hood was Awesome and Beautiful. Me and my wife enjoyed walking around at the bottom of the mountain. Being from Oklahoma and Texas we don’t see mountains and trees like this with the snow on them. We do have mountains but maybe not as big. The trip was great I enjoy the outdoors anyway so this was beautiful. The shops at the bottom Timberlands Lodge was Great the employees were friendly and helpful. We will definitely go back. Thank y’all.

Majestic views of the mountain

By Creekstone4505 |

Mount Hood is a beauty. And when out and about in Hood River she peeks at you from beyond orchards, farms and even over the golf course! Hike around Lost Lake and you will get a different view every time you look up. Breathtaking.

Breathtaking Views/Timberline Lodge

By Jayne C |

It is absolutely gorgeous being near the top of Mt Hood. To the south you can see Mt Jefferson and the day we were there we could see the Sisters. The Timberline Lodge was built by the WPA and opened in 1937. The workmanship is amazing. There are artifacts in the lodge from years gone by. Definitely worth the drive.

We went up to see timberline

By Nicholas H |

With the region being dominated by the mountain it's a must visit site. The way it shapes it's surroundings makes it worth the visit. The view if nothing else is worth the trip up!

Breathtakingly Beautiful

By NBradC |

Not our first visit, but the most interesting, as it was 67 degrees and sunny as we left town below the mountain, but 33 degrees and snowing madly when we reached the Timberline Lodge for lunch at 6,000 feet up the mountain! And, this was the day before the 1st day of summer. We love walking around the lodge and visiting the gift shop. And the lunch buffet was delicious, although extremely overpriced. We enjoyed our brief visit.

Breathtaking scenery, a must to see.

By Glen M |

Timing is important if you don't like to be among 5 million others enjoying the views. We arrived before the sun was up, and enjoyed several trails all to ourselves. The parking lot was packed by the time we got back to our car though, and it's truly a gorgeous sight to see.

Beautiful drive!

By Pionuslahaina |

Well amitained roads, beautiful drive. Saw many places to stop to hike or take pictures. Always enjoy this when there is no snow!

gorgeous

By Mark T |

I do believe this view is from Trillium lake, love this place, if you can visit during the week, no crowds, you can float around the lake on a tube...peaceful

Breathtaking

By Daniel V |

Mount Hood towers east of Portland, drawing you to the gorge. The mountain is so sharp and pointy, smothered in snow. Enjoy it best from Trillium Lake and Panorama Point, near Hood River.

Weekend break from the job just out of portland

By Greg d |

Most amazing walls and waterfalls. MULTNOMAH FALLS WAS MY FAVOUROTE. It is a must see and the skiing was fantastic

Amazing!!

By petlovr67 |

Visited here for the first time. This is really amazing. Loved the pictures that we got of this. Had fantastic views at Timberline Lodge. Would highly recommend this and the area.

Beautiful

By Lorry T |

Wow! We enjoyed traveling up Mount Hood. We were able to take a tram to the top at Timberline Lodge. It was amazing and beautiful. There are skiers year round! How fun to watch!

long drive up the mountain, cabin built at the top obstructing view

By Suzanne B |

The drive up the mountain is slow due to rough, rugged road and so many switch-backs. We just visited (Sept 2018) and learned there had been a devastating wildfire in 2008 so half the mountain is nothing but dead trees. We last visited 14 years ago (Sept 2004) and were in awe when we reached the Cloud Cap, with unobstructed views of Washington's Mt Adams, Mt Rainier and Mt St. Helens. However, since the fire a group has build a new log cabin where the view once was. You can still see the mountains if you walk off to the side, but we were very disappointed at this development.

Magnificent!

By 83lovetotravel |

About an hour drive from Portland and the drive is beautiful with lots of greenery and orchards on the way. You cannot drive all the way up as roads not paved for the last 2 miles or so. Eat at Crooked Tree Tavern before you head down.

Aww inspiring!

By ElenaLouisa |

We drove from Portland to Mount Hood and through the forest, and i totally recommend it. You get absolutely stunning views of Mount Hood, and the round trip takes only a few hours. At some points you can see Mt. St. Helens directly begins and Mount Hood in front!

Kind of lame

By Old Pro |

This used to be a great place for skiing and other snow activities but, it no longer has snow year-round. There's really nothing to do up there other than look around and without snow is just no fun. Kind of a waste of time in my book

Get your Ski On

By Traveling Burrito |

You need a car to get there but its very easy to access. They say chains are required to access most areas till May but we didn’t need them. Snow was still good. Best spot is the Timber lodge kick off point. Bring your ski, snowboard, kids, dog and cat. -Even wheelchaired granny

Can't believe.

By gary v |

The views from Hood River is just astonishing . To see a snowcapped mountain from both sides of the river is just like nature at it's best.I would also give credit too Mt Adams.Take road called the Fruit trail to see the best of the area.

Beautiful all over

By eli d |

The whole area is pretty, appealing, there are places to ride a bike, many rivers along the way, the majestic Mt. Hood on the distance, good food

A must do!!!

By Jamaicaman43 |

We did a drive around the mountain on routes 84 35 n 26. It was amazing. You see the mountain from all angles n their r plenty of stop offs for picture taking. The big bonus was going on 35 n you get all these orchards with fresh fruits. Also along the way r many nice wineries. A must do when in Portland

Very Scenic

By 1039 |

Very scenic drive up from Portland with the river and mountains in the background. Not that the temperature can drop quickly. It had actually snowed when we were there recently.

Big mountain, good hiking.

By Chuck S |

Enjoyed a hike into Burnt Lake from which we had a great view of Zigzag Glacier. Hike was an easy shuttle, fairly tough hike. Started at Burnt Lake-road can be navigated by a regular car easily. Second car at end of Cast Lake Trail. Burnt Lake had several nice lunch spots. About a 10.5 mile shuttle hike.

Day two was Paradise Park Loop on Mt. Hood. Taxing, about 13.5 miles lollypop loop from Timberline Lodge. Busy trail on Labor Day weekend. A bit past flower height, but a good trip. Bring lots of water or a filter, at least 3 liters.

Nice to end at Lodge, with a great restaurant or decent pub before heading down.

Breathtakingly beautiful

By DStin0731 |

On a clear day, you can see the Cascades' volcanic peaks very clearly. As you approach Mount Hood, it is stunning to see it grow larger and larger. It is a beautiful peak and the area offers many hiking trails. The Timberline Lodge is also well worth the visit, even if you are seeking lodging or skiing. The construction of it during the WPA/Roosevelt administration and the artifacts that remain are fascining.

Beautiful

By onestateatatime |

It was a long drive interrupted by road construction but it was absolutely beautiful. Even better on a clear day. Go off season to avoid the ski crowd.

Fantastic day on the snow

By Fabio Z |

Very special location, snow during the summer at 6000 ft.
The 1930' hotel and restaurant at 5000 ft are very nice. Very big free parking and a lot to see. The nature at his best.
A photocamera is highly reccommended.
There are some lake in the area. A special one is Trillium lake. Here you can found many picnic area and camping. A lot to see.
It has been a day well spent. I will go to Mt. Hood again.

Go! Don't Miss This in your Lifetime!

By namickey |

We'd heard Jonsrud Viewpoint was the 'best' view of Mt. Hood. Not true! Go to Trillium Lake and make the hike. Not only so much more to see there, but in our opinion, the best view.

Post Card Material

By danmurphy90 |

We could only go halfway up because of the snow. It was amazing since we were wearing shorts and short sleeved shirts to be able to see such a wonderful sight on a nice clear sunny day. At the lodge, people were still skiing and snowboarding which was kinda weird since we were in shorts. Beautiful sight-lots of great photos.

My front yard view is Mt. Hood

By VinoLover69 |

Mt. Hood is in a constant state of change. I mean one day we were skiing up there and we could smell the sulfur seeping out on a snowy day. Always check the weather and prepare to be surprised. The summer and early fall are the best times for a hike. There are so many places to explore that are not even in any books, but remember to use common sense and don't hike alone. I have personally had some close calls on the mountain in my younger days as I did not understand how fast mountain weather can change having been born and raised in Minnesota. After spending 26 years recreating on Mt Hood I have gained a healthy respect for this mountain. Enjoy and tread lightly....

Beautiful and impressive mountain

By Thomas P |

We drove around Mount Hood and stayed at the emblematic Timberline Lodge. Very beautiful mountain, impressive size. Wish we had more time there to explore it more!

Beautiful

By Charity H |

So beautiful and too close to Portland to not be explored. The hiking is beyond what you have experienced elsewhere, and the sights are worth the trip. We stayed in government camp and gave ourselves a lot of exploring time, but still didn’t see but a fraction.

Great scenery

By George T |

Outstanding views everywhere you look! Hood river overlooks are great, Mt Hood always seems to be in the background showing off!

We knew it's there, but we didn't see it!

By Raintree_Thailand |

Like a prowling black cat in a dark room, we sensed it was there, but we never got a glimpse, thanks to rain and clouds. Be careful to plan for the weather if you want to see the mountain. Even without good views of the mountain, the area is beautiful.

Excellent recreational area

By bwanderer |

In the winter, a handful of ski areas might suit your fancy (Timberline is my favorite, for its wide downhill runs), while in spring, summer, and fall, the hiking trails and especially the scenery. Even if you're just driving through, it's an enjoyable way to go, whether from Portland to/from central Oregon, e.g. Bend/Redmond, or to/from wine and lavender country of Hood River, which is on the mighty Columbia River.

Great views, orchards, wine, falls, WAAM plane/auto museum, what fun

By Kelly O |

Went for the views and the gorge, and the drive, and the falls, and the orchards, and the wine. Found a Great plane/auto museum in Hood River (WAAM) and had a great time.

Sublime beaty

By Allison C |

We drove around the mountain and viewed it from several spots. It’s awe inspiring! A must see! The weather was rainy and cold but the clouds just kept blowing by the mountain and the views were great!

Beautiful

By Keith M |

Spend a full day on a beautiful drive around Mt. Hood. Started in Hood River and headed south on Oregon 35. Stopped at the Hood River Ranger Station to look at some of the historic info and maps. Followed the road around to US-26 and took the a side trip up to Timberline Lodge. I've been all over the country, and this is on of the most beautiful views I've ever seen.

Scenically beautiful

By travelerKolkata |

TheMount Hood with snow scattered on it is scenically beautiful. It is one of the most photographed mountain in Oregon. Surely worth a visit

Excellent area

By BOBandBECKY |

Been all over this area it is a great place for all to enjoy. Bring your camera and make memories for ever.

Breath Easy

By steverM8495ML |

This is one of the most peacefull locations in the world, in my eye's anyway. The cool fresh air, fishing for large brown trout and wil life galore. Oregon is the Diamond in the rough.

The iconic photo is from Trillium Lake

By Alan S |

The must see places for photos are Trillium Lake, just off Hwy 26 a mile east of the turn-off to Timberline Lodge, and Timberline Lodge itself. There are many other recreational areas, but I've never spent much time there

Around the back

By Monica S |

Been to Mt Hood before, but this time we had to drive around because of the eagle creek fire. It is a majestic sight one minute the skies are cloudy & full of smoke, we went around to the other side, blue skies & OMG the sight was breathtaking.

Iconic Beauty and Splendid Activities

By Dan W |

To see and experience Mt. Hood is to see and experience the best of Oregon. There are too many activities and places to make a list. It is a beautiful (dormant) volcano with year round snow. Many outdoor activities are available such as skiing, biking, hiking, exploring; beaches and water sports can be found nearby on the Columbia River.
Hood River is a nice place to begin one's travels of the Mt. Hood region and then work the loop around the mountain to discover so many other interesting and splendid small towns and other sights.

Awesome mountain outside of Portland Oregon

By Allan S |

Overseas the city and us awesome. Planes pass nearby and you can view the mountain from anywhere in the city. It is the landmark that defines the entire area. Great pictures are the rule.

Don't miss it.

By Peter C |

A magnificent backdrop for Hood River and the drive to it and up to Timberline Lodge outstanding. It was rather cloudy and cold the day we went to the Lodge but this did not detract from its beauty. You can see Mt Hood from many locations and none fail to impress, all giving good photo opportunities.

First time up a mountain

By Irene A |

Visited Aug 2017 with family group of 12. Very nice trails. We went to one of the ski lodges and even though it's summer my boys got to see snow for the first time. Bring your walking shoes and jacket cause it gets cold up there.

It was snowing in May.

By Kerrie S |

We were going to go up to Timberline Lodge, but it was snowing hard - on May 2nd! So we kept on going over the pass. On the way back we could see this beautiful mountain from a distance. It is truly spectacular from down on the Columbia River near Hood River.

Gorgeous views, stunning landscape

By Jerilyn S |

We drove up to Timberline Lodge. Stellar views on the way. Lots of people skiing, even in the middle of July. Melt from the glaciers was basically done, but there was still some water making its way down.

Worth seeing

By mikeyd1951 |

Mt. Hood is definitely worth the time it takes. It is visible from a lot of locations and has numerous beautiful photo ops.

Another beautiful National Park

By Robert L |

You can see Mt Hood a long way off, so the drive seems longer than it really is. Lots of hiking trails. Don't forget to take the road up to the Timberline Lodge and at least have a beverage looking out over the Mountain.

Beautiful Mountain

By pamdY3291EY |

Saw this mountain from many angles when we did a 5 day housesit in Hood River. So, decided to go there. Beautiful drive, and beautiful view from near the top. It was early summer, but still snow on parts of the mountain

Spectacular!

By Chuck52310 |

Mt. Hood is the highest peak in Oregon. It is a spectacular and majestic mountain. Skiing is popular in the winter. Mountain gazing is popular in any season.

Get Up Close to This Icon of the Pacific NW!

By Jcwill5 |

During our recent vacation to the greater Mt. Hood area, we viewed Mt. Hood from all four directions and would recommend visitors do the same. Stunning vistas of this symmetrical mountain with orchards and lavender fields are available from Hood River looking south. Its crags and mighty outcroppings and grey lahar deposits down river valleys from the Timberline Lodge area, or from Mirror and Trillium lakes, looking north. The classic matterhorn-like profile from Portland looking East and from Rt. 35 looking west. It can be admired from afar, but its grandeur is only appreciated as one circles this peak from closer, encircling roads.

Beautiful Mountain

By rstrimel2 |

Drove up to the lodge where the view was o close and personal. Breath taking--still a loot of snow in August which feed the area water falls which are also great to see.

Iconic Go-to!!

By Sabina B |

Not only because of the wonderful beauty in this entire area, but the history behind the fabulous Timberline Lodge and its amazing architecture makes Mt. Hood a destination spot any time of year! Snow skiing all year long, fun slides in summer, beautiful trees, scenic views, great hiking trails, a few lovely lakes along the way, camping, cabins, a plethora of food & beverage choices.....the list goes on. We head up to the Mountain for snowboarding, or to see Bruno, Timberline's St. Bernard mascot, or just to grab snacks at the Rams Head Bar in the main lodge and watch the weather blow by. Literally. The views from our window table are fantastic. If you've never been....GO!!

Depends what you are going to do...

By Olga |

The mount isself is beautiful but... your impressions would depend on what you are going to do there... We didn't ski, we didn't attend spa nor stayed in the historic hotel. We came for photography! And we visited it in the middle of April. The weather might change fast, clouds might cover the very top or the whole Mount Hood... But do what you can to get close to the mountain - we drove from Government Capt to the Timberline Lodge and ski area. Got great pictures from the top down, some Mount Hood parts and people still enjoying snow! Visit the historic lodge, walk around, take a tour, enjoy souvenir shop!

WOWZA!

By 1234bp |

The views of Mount Hood are just spectacular. We just drove through and snapped some picture, although, we did not get out to hike or walk in the park or anything but, wow, is it ever beautiful. We took a long drive up close to Mount Hood and the roads were great. There is spotty phone and Internet service so just make sure you are going with a full tank of gas, a downloaded map on your smart phone that does not require Internet or Data, and basics like water, snacks, etc. just in case you have some kind of car or personal trouble of any kind. Highly recommend.

Take the drive

By 2013TravelinFool |

It was a beautiful day, sunny and could see all her glory. We took so many photos and wished we had taken more. Bit of a drive but well worth it

Astonishing view

By chaupig |

We enjoyed this spectacular scenery when we had lunch near the lake. It was quite hard to climb up to the Mt. Hood.

Fruit Loop Nice drive

By EZinn |

We stayed overnight in Hood river and then drove the "fruit Loop" we stopped at many of the places around the loop and had a very nice day as a family. There were orchards, and shops and farms and the view of Mt hood was great. we enjoyed our time here.

Wonderful

By Vicki L |

We drove up to Sunrise and stopped at the lodge. The road was a little scary, but I don't like heights. LOL. We were fortunate enough to have clear weather and an unobstructed view of the mountain. Worth the time to visit.

Another stunning attraction of Oregon.

By KristinTrevino |

Mt. Hood is so scenic year round. Snow in the winter, wild flowers in the spring, gorgeous hiking/camping in the summer and a rainbow of colors in the fall. There is so many things to do in and around Mt. Hood. World class skiing is my favorite. Beginning mid December and lasting through summer you can ski. Hiking trails of all levels and abilities. Camping on the many lakes and streams. Resort attractions of alpine slide, bungee jumping, mountain biking, ride the chairlifts and so much more. Timberline lodge is an icon with an abundance of cool history. Timberline lodge has overnight accommodations, a lovely restaurant and a great bar, outdoor pool and jacuzzi. If you are a tourist from out of town or a local Northwestern, Mt. Hood is a must do any time of the year. I am so fortunate to live in such an amazing place just an hour from the mountain or 2 hours from the Oregon Coast.

Loved a snowy spring trip to Mt. Hood

By G612 |

Very pleasant retreat days at the base of the mountain...sunny, warmish, greenish and beautiful expansive views. Love me some Hood!

Must go if you’re in Hood River

By SoccerStar |

Majestic place for sure, You must go and visit if you’re in this part of the country.
We enjoyed the ride up the mountain and we are planing going back again before the summer is over.
Plan on spending at least 4 hours.

Nice little drive!

By The Trainer Hood River |

I enjoy driving this road except in the winter time! If it’s slick, some folks drive as if they were “invincible” until they find out different! Be careful at those times! The Trainer (RN)* Personal Trainer, “One On One Only”

Hike!

By Malena M |

A really nice place with fantastic views. Beutiful nature, and good parking. Good restrooms and pretty clean.

Majestic and beautiful

By Moonracer4260 |

We traveled south from Hood River Valley down Rt35, enjoying the different angles of the peak from the road. We stopped at Lake Trillium to enjoy the water and Hood makes a stunning backdrop that reflects in the lake surface.

The Mountain

By Allison H |

A lovely snow capped mountain that is over 11,000 feet high. People come here from around the world to ski year round. I just came for the view and the history. It was well worth the trip!

Beautiful Snowy Mountain Views

By Stephen A |

I went up the Timberland Lodge route as the sun rose. If you want to get pictures without skiers, this is a great time and location to do that. I hiked up Mountaineer Trail #798 off the smaller parking lot on the right. Beautiful views. There are many spectacular views of the mountain. Don't miss Mount Hood if your in the area.

Ethereal vistas

By LoisLane_S17 |

I feel incredibly blessed to have visited OR during a 2-wk rainless stretch! Meaning, Mt Hood was my magical companion, offering regular and thrilling glimpses. always there, always stunning,

Beautiful Views

By Sue K |

Drove from Portland Oregon to Mount Hood. The drive was breathtaking once we reached forest area. The views as we traveled to the mountain where awesome. Mount Hood was beautiful. The temperature was in the 70's. There were people skiing, climbing the mountain and just enjoying the views.

What a wonderful day we spent here

By lisawhistler |

We were so lucky that there was in break in the weather and we happened to be here on the warmest day of the season so far with clear blue skies. Mount Hood is truly a thing of beauty and you are in awe from the moment you see it from the distance to when you get up to Timberline Lodge. You absolutely must not avoid going up to the Timberline which is right on the mountain and has fascinating history. Its well worth the 6 mile drive up the mountain!

I Mean, You Can Build a Snowman in July

By Gary A |

What an incredible place. Mt Hood dominates the scenery below everywhere you go, and to actually be on it? Super cool. From Timberline Lodge you can take the “Magic Mile” chair lift in the summer to get up to 7000 ft elevation. Even in the heart of July, it’s a different world up there. People skiing and snowboarding, and my Florida family even made a snowman. Definitely cool.

Timberline Lodge (Mt Hood) - beautiful views, good food, and warm fireplaces.

By Granny Travels Solo |

Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood is a wonderful historic lodge with many dining options, fabulous fireplaces, impressive craftsmanship, and stunning views in many directions. I did not stay overnight, so cannot comment on the rooms. During my May 2024 day excursion, there were many snowboarders having fun.

This granny travels solo (ADA), so the Mt. Hood Shuttle Express was a terrific and economical option to get to Timberline Lodge (Mt. Hood) from Sandy, OR. As of May 2024, one-way was $2, or all-day pass for $5 (cash only, no digital pmt). Took about one hour each way. Their online schedule may differ slightly during heavy snow or high winds.

Gorgeous

By Yodatravel |

It doesn't take much to describe the mountain so many people have come to appreciate. Prizes beautifully above the Portland skyline to be seen for miles. What a beautiful place as is the entire region around it. Highly recommended

Awesome Drive to the Top

By TbonethePhotographer |

My wife and I drove to the base of Mt Hood and LOVED it. What a great drive to the hotel at the top. When you get there you can get out and hike to the top if you wish but better have some experience. It is normally snowing at the top but what an experience to say you hiked on a volcano.

Nice View

By Apinya N |

Amazing view. The weather was cold but sunny, there are many activities to do (ski, snowboard, playing in the snow, take pictures etc.)

Beautiful Area!

By Gary F |

Drove north of Hood River and explored this area. Beautiful forests and mountains. A few years ago we went up to the lodge on Mount Hood. Very interesting rustic architecture and worth a see.

This is amazing to see summer to walk or enjoy the hikes winter to sky and enjoy the snow. You may need chains or rent a SUV with AWD. Like a Subaru or Toyota RAV4
We loved the area so many things to do not enough time.

Stunning and worth the short drive from Portland

By fizzy1991 |

If you have a little bit of time while in Portland, take a short one hour drive to Mount Hood. The mountain is stunning and on a clear day absolutely breathtaking. We did "lose" Google maps along the way but we had a magazine from the airport called "Scenic Byways" which was very helpful.

Wedding

By Lyn H |

Beautiful venue at the organic farm in mount hood. Very romantic and ideal for a wedding. Overlooks mount hood so stunning photo opportunities

Great skiing at Timberline!

By Terri L |

Love the skiing at Timberline! Highly recommend the snowcat trip up Palmer Express if you're an experienced skier - fantastic, fast ski down to Magic Mile and to the lodge from there. Ski school staff is great: although there was no skiing for the first hour of the level 3 lesson for my husband and son, my daughter actually ended up with a private lesson when she missed the beginning of her class. Definitely recommend!

Go there - don't hesitate

By dejanbuhovac |

We are from Europe and we live just a few steps from the Alps but we still LOVE to visit Mt.Hood every time we go to Oregon. We were there many times in all seasons and we enjoy it so much. Mountain offers so many diverse possibilities for sports of all kinds. It offers also spectacular views around the region.
There is so much going on at the Mt. Hood that one review is not enough to describe all. If you are in Oregon just go there and enjoy every single of nature.

Hiked the Timberline Trail 45 miles around Mount Hood.

By Hochmayr |

Great views, nice trail well kept except for Elliot Glacier wash out area. Plenty of markers (stacked rocks) from previous hilkers to mark a fair route.

Spectacular volcanoe

By Kevin P |

Mt Hood is a glaciated peak in northern Oregon. We stopped at the skifield base and did a 2h hike through the lower slopes. Because of the massive snowpack (175% of normal) progress was slow, though the scenery was spectacular. We had to use GPS to follow the snow covered trail as were some PCT hikers we met too. There progress was at a 50% rate!

Great place to visit in any season

By Zoran_travels |

Always fun visiting in summer. Special treat is to stay in Timberline Lodge. From lakes to hikes to snow (yes - snow). And make sure you do not miss cherry season.

Mount Hood and Portland

By Diane B |

Our second week in Oregon was in Welches between Portland and Mount Hood. Our condo was excellent and had plenty of room for our daughter and and us. Our first full day was a visit to the Columbia River Gorge. We began at the Dallas' and drove west. We stopped at Multnomah Falls and it was closed. We drove westward to Vista House with spectacular views. The volunteers there told us Multnomah Falls was open again. We did not want to miss this so we drove back and found a parking place easily. ( Be advised if you go there and it is closed it is likely it will open again later). The Falls is awesome. The upper falls is a 600 foot drop to the second tier. We walked up to the upper bridge that was a .3 of a mile steep hike. Our next adventure took us to Timberline Lodge 6000 feet above sea level with great views of Mt Hood. Next we hiked a short moss and fern laden trail to Little Zig Zag Falls which was delightful. Trillium Lake Loop is a flat trail around the lake. Fantastic view of Mt Hood, and reflections of the fall colored leaves in the lake. The next day we enjoyed the autumn colors on our drive to Mt Saint Helens in Washington State. Very educational lecture by the ranger and film. The day after we went to Portland. Being the Rose City we had to visit their beautiful Rose Gardens. We were pleasantly surprised at the amount of Roses still in bloom in October. We were within walking distance to the famous Japanese Garden, and took the free shuttle from the pay booth up to the garden. The autumn colors added to the beauty of the gardens. We spent a couple hours (at least) there. It was off to Chinatown to the Chinese Garden. We got there just in time for a guided tour of the gardens which was very informative. The guide explained the symbolism of every room we entered. The next day we did the Fruit Loop and stopped at many farms selling their fall fruits and veggies. The place along the route called The Trunk was a welcomed change with lots of antiques etc. to sell. We even got an ice cream treat made from an old fashioned ice cream maker: yummy. We walked the downtown of Hood River visiting the shop and galleries. I will continue our third week in the next review.

views are amazing!

We went to Mount Hood in July from Hood River to Portland Oregon. We stayed at Still Creek campground. Campground was pretty unique as it was huge. Big sites. We had fun watching a couple back their travel trailer into the site across from us. Our son sat in a chair and ate a bag of chips. My husband was helping! We visited Trillium lake, went to Timberline lodge, checked out the creek. Really gorgeous area.

Public transportation from portland

By Hoben01 |

I’ve made this trip twice from Portland simply becuz both times I did not have a car available. What you need to do is using google maps put in the Sandy transit center as your destination. The portion getting to the Gresham transit center has plenty of options, but the sandy express from Gresham to sandy runs on a limited basis which is every 1/2 hour on weekdays and only on the hour weekends. Once you reach the sandy transit center there is the mt hood express that runs from sandy to timberline lodge on mt hood.
Overall this is a very long bus ride easily 2-3 hours one way. However, it’s budget friendly you can purchase an all day ticket for pdx transit for $5 and when you get to Gresham ask the sandy express bus driver for a round trip ticket including the mt hood express for $5 cash only.
Obviously this is a day trip that requires an early morning start. I would suggest looking up the schedule for the mt hood express since that will decide your starting time the service runs 7 days a week this bus takes into account that visitors are possibly skier/snowboarding or mountain bikers and makes room allowance for the gear
As for your visit one can ski mt hood well into August but that’s also prime time for hiking/biking mt hood.

Majestic!

By Lisa H |

Visiting Mt. Hood is a must do if you travel through Oregon. There are so many activities and places to visit. Hiking, skiing, biking, and exploring the quaint towns is always available any time of the year! Just a short drive and you can be on the Columbia River having fun with water sports or just relaxing at the beach.

Impressive site to behold in Spring

By Cherry_Wonderdog |

Cherry Wonderdog visited Mount Hood in April 2023, and even though there was no snow on the ground in Hood River, and day temperatures reached near 70, Mount Hood stood as a majestic snowy beacon in the distance, beckoning us to come closer. We ultimately did, by driving up the mountain road to reach the snow parks and, ultimately, the famous Timberline Lodge. Not surprisingly, temperatures plummeted as we ventured through Mount Hood Parkdale, and we hit the snow line rather quickly, but we had no idea that there would be this much. There must have been 10 feet of snow on the side of the road, and hiking Mount Hood Park Division Recreation Area (Parkdale) was an exceptional experience. Even the bathroom buildings were nearly covered in white stuff.

Take it from Cherry Wonderdog: Mount Hood is truly a beautiful mountain, and the whole area is worth visiting, especially in spring.

Not sure why you drive up

By astaplet82 |

We drove up to the hotel at the top of the mountain. It's a bit of a pain to make that drive. Views along the way are decent, but when you get to the top you're above the treeline, so you're basically staring up at grey skree.

The old inactive volcano in the Cascades with character!

By Shannon P |

I look out my window at Mt. Adams, but Mt. Hood definitely has a unique shape and I wish I saw it instead. It has many wonderful hiking trails and I have good memories of times spent cross-country skiing. I never climbed the summit, but did hike up to 8,000 feet and overnighted at Cathretal ridge. 2 ski resorts make this mountain a fun destination. Besides Timberline Lodge being a great tourist stop, the views are worth the 6 mile drive up there.

Winter fun in Portland/Mt Hood

By cristina n |

Family reunion in Portland Oregon in February? You bet! Rain does not stop the locals(or us) from taking to the hiking trails. There are many, not strenuous, but long and beautiful through the surrounding forests. Trail running seems to be very popular too.
Mt Hood is 2 hours away. Meadows ski resort with downhill skiing was unexpectedly vast, well groomed runs, with a few nice little restaurants and cafeterias. You should rent the skis right there, so you can return them when you are done, even if you stay for night skiing. We rented ours at a store on our way, which cut our day short since they closed at 7.
For cross country, Teacup Lake was nicely groomed, quite a few , trails not excessively difficult, as we were all beginners here. There are other cross country trails around Mt Hood, so for the enthusiast, it’s worth looking at others.
All in all, we discovered Portland in winter has plenty of outdoor opportunities.

Mt Hood 2019

Great trip up to Mt Hood. Was different than normal as little snow remains. The bike trail looks great.

Wish the weather had been better

By Glenn R |

We did a one-day driving trip to Mt. Hood from Hood River. It is a stunningly beautiful place, and our only regret was that it was a 'marginal' weather day. We had occasional glimpses of Mt. Hood (thru rain/mist and occasional snow) in all its splendor, and drove up to the ancient and famous Timberline Lodge (the site for filming parts of the Steven King/Stanley Kubrick/Jack Nicholson classic movie 'The Shining'). On this damp, dreary, depressing day, you could easily understand why this place was chosen for the movie.

Clean, Spacious, Great View

By MissJoious |

Stayed here for a wedding in Mt. Hood area. Our room was nice and spacious, with wonderful views of the paddle boarding river across the street. Close by to the cute Mt. Hood downtown area. Very clean and comfortable.

SPECTACULAR VIEWS AND EXPERIENCES

By Cary L |

Mt. Hood is within day-trip distance of Portland, but even better as an overnight trip. You can see the mountain from Portland, but the closer you get, the more spectacular it looks. Drive out I-84 along the Columbia River for beautiful views, high waterfalls, and interesting sights. At Hood River, take scenic Highway 35 up the mountain. You'll soon be in tall forests, but with frequent views of the snow-covered peak. Eventually, you reach the timber line and get fantastic, unobstructed views. If you have time, spend the night at the Forest Service's Timberline Lodge, a beautiful hotel high on the mountain, evoking images of national park lodges like the Ahwahnee at Yosemite. There you can ski, hike, or just sit around looking up at the peak. Returning to Portland, take inland Highway 26, which runs through miles of dense forests.

Great Drive From Hood River

By Toothfairy311 |

We had great views of the mountain and orchards from Panoramic Point around Hood River. Only a couple miles out of town, don't miss it! The mountain had just finished their ski season and the tour of Timberline Lodge is really interesting. If you are lucky you might get to meet Heidi or Bruno!

Trecking to the falls from the TamanawasTrail Head

By Nagi N |

Had a great first time trecking a 2 mike loop. Between the two options, I chose the short one for being a firtst timer . It was an easy trail and I was able to leisurely get to the falls in little over an hour. Enjoyed trecking as well as the spectacular views along the way. The weather was nice at around lower 60’s

Overall a great first time experience.

Pretty views !

By southerncaligirl72 |

Always wanted to visit Mount Hood when visiting Portland. You can always see this beautiful mountain flying over the city. Stopped at Bigfoot center in Boring since it was on the way. We first drove up to the Timberline Lodge. Nice rustic hotel with lots of history. Took a hike up the mountain and saw some waterfalls.
Beautiful views!

Nice Drive

We just drove up the 35 from Hood River and then back to Portland in the 26 - beautiful scenic drive - great road too.

What an amazing road trip with a stop at Mount Hood. Lots of places to stop and view the gorgeous scenery, A pleasant drive through Oregon.

Absolutely gorgeous

By Brenda K |

When the clouds don’t obscure your view, this dormant volcano is breathtaking! It rises up and surprises you at various turns in the road. The remaining snow accentuates her cragginess.

Amazing place for hiking

This is an amazing place for hiking and winter sports. Given that the place has Snow even in June, it provides an amazing area for adventure sports.

By emmitt j |

Mt Hood is just one of many such majestic places to visit year round, known for the great skiing at winter and sight seeing in the summer,Mt Hood sits in Hood River County Oregon,a inactive volcano,it sits snow capped year round, rumblings in the ground under the mountain keep the locals on edge and the Us Government keeps a watch for sign of activity.one of many ,volcano,s that ring the pacific northwest,it makes up part of the Cascade Range, from one side you can see Mt Adams,Mount St Helens and Mt Rainier, Well worth going too..

Mt Hood

By mistyschulz |

Mt Hood is an empowering mountain. May trail go to scenic vistas on the mountain's timberline trail as well as the Pacific Crest Trail. Wildflowers are abound in June, July, and August. Creeks with waterfalls, such as Tamanawa Falls and Ramona Falls, flow from the flanks of the mountain. Few lakes are on the mountain however there are numerous lakes at the base of the mountain such as Burnt Lake and Mirror Lake. Glaciers are on all sides of the peak. All of the areas are quite beautiful but the north and northwest sides are my favorites from such vantage points such as McNeil Point.

Beautiful Drive!

By Cheryl B |

The mount hood drive is very beautiful!
The small towns on the way have anything you may need. This was our first time driving that route but it won't be our last.

Beautiful drive with sights of Mt. Hood

By Roger S |

This is a beautiful drive south from Hood River, OR. There are nice views of Mt. Hood and many of the trail heads are off this highway. Beautiful colors in the fall. The road is in good condition with passing lanes.

A must see if you are in the area.

By Navigator359837 |

We spent part of the morning hiking the Mirror Lake trail and then headed over to Timberline Lodge for lunch and people watching. This mountain is just stunning.

Stunning scenery

By Ken B |

The road up to Mount Hood as well as the end point at the Timberline Lodge is dotted with the spectacular scenery. The mountain itself is beautiful to behold, and a photographer's dream. You can get some good images from the lodge, from outside the lodge, or by or taking some short walks up the mountain. We were there on a beautiful fall afternoon with temperatures in the 60s and blue skies all around.

Simply Spectacular!

Whatever your reason for visiting Mt Hood National Park you cannot go wrong. Camping, Hiking, Kayaking or whatever. Beautiful views and it is simply spectacular.

Simply awesomen mountain day

To go Oregon and not to vist Mount Hood is like going to Peru and not going to macchu Picchu... no matter the weather or season... Moun Hood is always beautiful and relaxing... do not misss it, winter or summer is always fun and easy to acces (unless a super storm)

Spectacular mountain

By Tom O |

The view of this mountain is really quite spectacular, with the volcanic cone shape and a lot of snow remaining on June fifteenth. People were still skiing and snowboarding Shen we got to the top. The road is very good, so it's an easy drive up. The big lodge is impressive, from the thirties...a WPA project. We ate in the restaurant. Food was excellent, good service.

Beautiful area and views

By Charlie C |

Mount Hood is a beautiful site the way it suddenly appears from the road covered in snow. The surrounding forest and views are well worth the drive.

Gorgeous Place

By Vernon L |

Because Trillium Lake (shown in picture above) was absolutely jam packed on the Saturday we were there, unless you're going to kayak, try to find another day to go (even then, it's not a bad idea to go on a weekday). We had to park a few blocks away just to be able to near the lake, so we took pictures and headed to Heather Meadows ski area, took the tram up and hiked back down. The wildflowers were out of control on this amazing hike with killer views and a gorgeous little waterfall at the end (Umbrella Falls). The "Fruit Loop" drive near the mountain was worth the time and the several stops along the way. Just the ice cream and fresh fruit made it worthwhile! Don't pass up this awesome mountain.

Magnificent day long trip

By Lynn Y |

We drove what we called the "Mount Hood Loop" Made several stops such as waterfalls, lakes, orchards, picnic by the river and Timberline Lodge. Saw Mount Hood all the way around!

Cool Outing in summer

By Midori N |

It took only one hour and a half drive from Vancouver, WA to beautiful Mt Hood. Evergreen trees, clean and cool air were refreshing. Adult could ride on the lift to
view 180 degrees of mountain vista. Some people were riding mountain bikes and snow boarding there. It was a nice family getaway.

A must see!! Great drive up

By glutengirl25 |

This was fantastic, we had beautful views along the way up and checked out the hotel at the top which was used for some outdoor hotel scenes in the Shining. This is a must drive!

Wow,wow,wow!!

We did a drive round the Mount Hood area stopping to take pictures of the mountain from every angle, on a clear sunny day (we were very lucky!) It's spectacular from any viewpoint.

Scenic Mount Hood

By mini |

We returned in the Spring to the Mount Hood area. We were blessed with spectacular clear skies and so we had great viewing of Mount Hood. Snow was still on the mountain.

There are numerous outdoor activities one can do in the area.

A Must See

By BethfromA2 |

We stayed at Timberline Lodge and saw skiing in July! Even met the father of a US Olympic Ski Team hopefully training up on the mountain. So unbelievable that there is skiing in July. The only place in the US with year round skiing.

Exquisite Views, Majestic Mountain

By daanddo |

As part of our day long tour we went to Mt. Hood, the views were absolutely beautiful, the plants unique and interesting and the lodge was a classic grand hotel. Even in late June people were skiing, there is camping if the hotel is not your cup of tea (and yes there is a restaurant for tea and meals), hiking and other outdoor activities.

Great family vacation

By StaceyBZ2016 |

Two families rented a chalet on Mt Hood for our summer vacation. We hiked and explored Hood River and the Columbian River Gorge and enjoyed all the summer activities on Mt Hood and had an amazing time. You could ski or snow board on the northern runs of Mt Hood — even in late July. Natural beauty and plenty of physical activities.

Summer Vacation

By nibaldom2015 |

After doing the Columbia River Gorge, decided to head to timberline lodge at Mt. Hood. The lodge is quaint, and right at the base of the lodge. The girls enjoyed playing in the snow in the middle of summer. It was not crowded and were able to admit the mountain outside with a couple cocktails. There is also great hiking and good scenery. Worth visiting, enjoy.

Enjoy the Ride!

By firstlutheran |

Best time to visit is in July. You can still ski and the temps are 85! Be sure to arrive early for parking. Can always walk in to Lodge and get lunch at the bar!

We had a great trip by road to mount hood the road was icy but safe , they ensured that the gravel is sprayed time to time to avoid skidding and slipping while walking.
The ambience and atmosphere was excellent and enjoyed the entire drive and playing in the snow .
The cafe was full and enjoyed the hot chocolate drink it was awesome.

One of the best place for Nature Lovers

Outstanding Trip!

By Louis R |

Well worth it. Hatham is an awesome guide. Friendly, knowledgeable and full of interesting to bits about the Portland area. We saw several waterfalls, scenic points, and of course Mt. Hood.

A Must Visit

By IdahoKid |

Not sure Mount Hood needs any more praise, but it is a wonderful place. Beautiful drive of maybe an hour from Hood River, great views when you get up to the Lodge. Good presentations within the Lodge of how it was built back in 1937. Also some decent food there. Big restaurant, plus lighter fare up on the mezzanine. And yes, they do ski further up the mountain just about all year round (we were there the end of August and there were plenty of skiers and snowboarders up on the hill). And no, Timeberline Lodge was not the scene for Jack Nicholson and The Shining movie, but they did film a couple of opening shots here. Also some nice hikes out from the Lodge if you're the walking type.

Gorgeous view

By BlueBoyTX |

It is a spectacular drive just getting at the timberline lodge and visitor center
Once arrived there and parked (try to get there rather early in the day to be able to find a spot) you can walk around the lodge or take the ski-lift to the midpoint
The ride gives you an impressive view of the mountain and surrounding area (18$ per person, 54$ for a family of four)
Once at the top you can walk down
You can eventually walk to the midpoint from the lodge, but it is quite the hike given the change in elevation and the thin air

Walking is however the best way to appreciate the alpine flowers and wildlife

At the visitor center you will find all the services, rental of any equipment, food and water

Well worth the trip! Beautiful scenery! Majestic!

By Sunshine311921 |

Not sure my review is needed. It is a beautiful mountain, and you can drive completely around it....or take a tour bus from Portland! Well worth the time!

Views are incredible

By Boernematt |

Bring plenty of clothes even in the summer. It was 45 in late June once the clouds rolled in. We were to late to catch the lift up but sure wish we would have done it

5* in my imagination! I couldn't see it due to fog and rain, but still fun to visit

By Robert J |

I can imagine on a beautiful day how nice this is, since the drive up was enchanting as we drove through the forest in rain and fog. Why bother going all the way to the lodge under those conditions? Well, we were visiting Oregon for a limited time, and that's the hand we were dealt. Visit now or go home empty-handed. We were glad we went, just for the mysteriousness of the foggy woods and to experience how bitterly miserable it was at the lodge elevation when rain at borderline freezing temperatures was blowing in high wind. If nothing else, it reminds you why you should respect Nature when you are out hiking in mountain terrain; if not prepared, hypothermia could kill you when weather changes. Up at the lodge, there was a roaring fire, but not much else going on. The whole place was pretty deserted (in June). I guess at ski season it is a hopping place; maybe later in the summer too?

Would I do it again? Under the constraints I had, yes. But I would much prefer to come on a clear day! Just be prepared with appropriate clothing whenever you come.

Rewarding

By Corrado |

You can hike to viewpoints.
It is often very dusty on the way, in some places the way is difficult to find.
Definitely worth the trip

Scenic drive along the Columbia Gorge to Mt Hood area

By FYL003 |

Fruit stands, farm selling local grown produce, wineries and side roads for trail heads... etc, dotted along the way. There are many outdoor recreation spots in the area. The least strenuous option to enjoy the view is to drive directly to the Timberline Lodge to walk around some and have a meal at the lodge.

Taking the "loop" out of Hood River on way to Portland, Or.

By Jane J |

Wanted to drive to Mt. Hood Resort and did so to the Timberline Lodge which was built in the 1930's. It's the hotel where the movie "The Shining" with Jack Nicholson was filmed. We were there May 3rd and it was raining / sleeting / snowing. People were still skiing and snowboarding. We only walked through the lodge and then left to head to the West coast. The "loop" is a great car tour to take with all sorts of fruit farms and vineyards where you can stop if you have the time.

Take the scenic loop

By bannyrat |

Can you say waterfalls and hiking trails!? If so, this is definitely the trip for you. Easily accessible from Portland. A great day trip.

Beautiful, careful driving!

By TravelDoorsOut |

Be careful driving up, you will need a 4x4. Gorgeous and a really nice pit-stop to go to Timberland Lodge or any of the coffee shops.

Amazing

We did a tour of vista house, the falls and Mount Hood. All amazing highly recommend. Sat outside the Timberlake lodge on the veranda. Beautiful view. Have fun

Beautiful view but be aware of limited parking

By sharonp0124 |

Everyone wants view of Mt. Hood from Trillium Lake, however parking very inadequate during peak times. There is no place to turn around once you get there.
Fascinating views of Mt. Hood. We did not have enough time to hike.

Awsome on a Clear day

By Bob B |

We were fortunate to visit on a bright sunny day. Initially the mountain peak was covered by cloud but this quickly cleared to provide a clear view of the peak.

This is an awesome sight in a great setting. On a good day this is well worth a visit.

Still with snow covering in July

By 949ww |

Mt. Hood is impressive- still had a lot of snow on it, even in late July. Would love to see it during "true" snow season.

A must visit. A beautiful National Park and Lodge

By Pam M |

Even if you don't hike or ski, this is a must see. Just absorb the historical surroundings. Be sure to tour the museum area and watch the film regarding the construction and history of the lodge.

Our room was very small. Felt like we needed to keep luggage on the bed. Bathroom was about as small our the one on our sailboat. TVs are about the size of a 17 inch mac book. But, you didn't go here for the room. You will also hear people on the floor above you. They provide ear plugs. You'll find those in a small envelope in your room. Remember that you are here to see the park, not the room, and you'll be fine.

Inspiring Outdoor Experience

By alcor1922 |

Awesome scenery in and around the Mt Hood areas. The mountain itself is a beautiful sight as you drive around the territory. There is so much places to see and so much things to do and experience. Highly recommend staying in the quaint town of Welches as your home base for exploring the many outdoor activities and attractions that Mt Hood territories can offer.

Stunning Mount Hood

By nowpacking |

We drove out towards Mount Hood and stopped at multiple places to capture the changing views! Absolutely beautiful views from the lavender fields, the vineyards and orchards. But the most stunning views were from Trillium Lake! Go in the morning and if they are charging $10, gladly pay it!

Spectacular

By Bugqueen |

Mount Hood, called Wy'east by the Multnomah tribe, is a potentially active stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc of northern Oregon. It is located about 50 miles (80 km) east-southeast of Portland. . In addition to being Oregon's highest mountain, it is one of the loftiest mountains in the nation based on its prominence. height: 11,249 feet (3,429 m)The peak is home to 12 named glaciers and snowfields. It is the highest point in Oregon and the fourth highest in the Cascade Range. A must see...

Spectacular

By Peter G |

We took Rt 26 from Portland to Mitchell Oregon. The early part of out journey found us driving thru dense evergreen forest up and down steep stretches of highway. I was amazed at all the bike cyclists. Talk about the ultimate workout.
All of a sudden we spotted Mt. Hood. What a spectacular site ! Fully snow covered here in July. I was told they have year round skiing on it. If you are in the area it IS a must see attraction.
It's a very busy area so be careful exiting and entering Rt 26.

It's Mt Hood

It's Mt. Hood a great place to hike , ski, board etc.. There is something to do all year round. The Mountain Is beautiful whether your simply looking at it from a far or picking berries in the summer. This is a not to be missed experience any time of the year. So just go do it.

Really enjoyable day , we drove up to mount hood day area, parked and trekked down from the peak, so much fun....on the way back we stopped for a trek to mirror lake, really fun easy trek....couple of hours round trip.

Well worth the drive!

By SLR |

we visited Mt. Hood in October so there was no snow but it was still well worth the drive up the mountain. Fall is a beautiful time in Oregon and the leaves were all the shades of fall. The weather was crisp, clean and just a little breezy. Regardless of no snow, the mountain was beautiful and we got amazing shots of the mountain and Timberline Lodge. You can walk all through and around the lodge, which is spectacular. I'd love to come and stay here during the winter!
On the drive to or from Mt. Hood there are lots of cute places to stop (this is on the Fruit Loop outside of Hood River). You can make a whole day of it.

COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE TRIP

By webbfoot |

Went to Mount Hood via Hood River. Several pull-offs, with great views of snow covered Mount Hood. Went to lodge at base of Mount Hood, beautiful views from here. Lodge was a very beautiful building. Snowed a little bit while we were there. Cherries were in season while we were here. Stopped at a large Fruit Market, $4.00 a LB., Later stopped at a small stand in front of a house, got about 3 LBS. for $2.00. Mount Hood is another must see place in Oregon.

Mt Hood

By Chris C |

Mt Hood was amazing and we were able to get so far up the mountain as it has a ski slope! While we were there, skiing was still happening. There’s an amazing lodge at the base of the slopes. There are plenty of signs to help you navigate.

Cold, windy, bright, beautiful

By Tansy2015 |

May 6, 2024. 32° blowing snow bright and very cold. They just got 16 inches of snow in the past 24 hours and another 2 inches while we were there. We drove a very small car and it was fine until you got into the parking lot, which was not plowed and full of snow, snow and slush, but I love this mountain and the lodge. Doesn’t get any better than this!

Absolutely stunning

By Barganax |

We spent a day driving around the skirts of Mount Hood. The landscape was stunning beyond belief. We stopped off at the ranger office outside Hood River, bought a parking tocket for the area and were treated to very friendly advice from the rangers. Then off around the mountain. We stopped off at one of the ski resorts, knowing it was closed but it gave us a chance to get further up the mountain. Inevertably we also visited the Timberline hotel. It lives up to the hype. A bit of advice, if you want lunch go early as the queues soon lengthen. We drove to Trillion (sp? ) lake and ambled around in perfect peace and quiet.
Ok, we did not hike or climb around as we are far too old these days, but it was a truely wonderful day out soaking in the mountain from all directions

We found a lovely Harvest Host site- MONTAVAN'S BERRY FARM , not far from the town of Mt Hood

By Roxanne M |

Mt. Hood scenic drive, a worthwhile experience.

By KaimukiGirl24 |

I can only emphasize how worthwhile a trip it was to see this majestic mountain which can be viewed on clear days from Portland. It was our very first visit to Oregon and it was on my bucket list to see the Columbia River Gorge, to do the scenic drive around Mt. Hood and visit Timberline Lodge. It was also our great fortune that the weather was perfect. Be sure your car has a full tank when you begin your journey, have water and some snacks because you are out in the country, if you see a National park or State park ranger station it is usually wise to stop for helpful information. They have updated information on road and weather conditions and can provide tips on how to make travelling safer for visitors specific to their area.

Take the scenic route

The mount hood drive is very beautiful!
The small towns on the way have anything you may need. The highway is in good condition. You just want to drive forever.

Hikes

By patrick t |

We took multiple hikes in the Mount Hood area. My wife is recovering from a severe broken leg, so our hikes were more on the easy side. Be aware a $5 pass is required for parking in the Mount Hood hiking area.

We did 2 hikes along the Salmon river, the river is beautiful and the old growth forest was great as well. We saw Salmon in the river, but not much else wildlife.

We did the West Fork Falls, this was very remote. The hike was nice at the end because of the falls.

We also hiked to Mirror Lake, 700 foot climb over a 1.5 miles. The lake was nice, but not as great as other mirror lakes we've visited

Great hikes

By KatieZ995 |

Beautiful views with great hikes surrounding the whole area! The North side of the mountain offers plenty of wineries and breweries to visit.

This mountain is so beautiful. You can see it for miles & there are places you can get close to it. You can also ski it in winter. If you visit Portland you need to take half a day to drive east & see it.

Beautiful Sight

By jautrey21 |

We had been doing the Columbia River Gorge all day so on the rare times when the clouds broke Mt Hood dominated the skyline. Toward the end of the day we were at the base when the clouds went away and we could see it fully. We raced up to Timberline lodge on snowy and icy roadways to get there right as the setting sun was casting its last light of the day on the face of Mt Hood. If we had been 5 mins later we would have totally missed it. When the skiers and snow boarders stopped to look you can imagine what kind of sight it was. It was one of the most gorgeous things I had ever seen! If I make it back to this part of the country again I will revisit in hopes of catching that glimpse again.

Great place to play

By TravelinSuz |

If you’re here in winter there’s snow related sports and snow shoe hikes. Summer is beauteous with great hikes and scenery. There’s a train on the back or northeast side. Spring has wildflowers.

Such a beautiful area

By Jasmine38Chichester UK |

This is such a stunning area. Amazing views of MT Hood and great hikes abound. We drove up to Timberline Lodge and there was still plenty of snow around. I recommend walking a part of the Pacific Crest trail from the hotel to the saddle of Zig Zag Canyon, a there and back hike of 4.5 miles and not very difficult. Wonderful views and you are very close to Mt Hood. First time I've walked across numerous large patches of snow in the middle of July.

There was also a chairlift running if you want to get higher up the mountain. There were a fair number of skiers and snowboarders.

We also did the hike to Mirtor Lake (reviewed separately) which is easily access from a large parking area about 10 mins drive before you get to the Lodge and also recommended.

Loved the towering presence of Mount Hood from so many locations in this part of Oregon. Truly spectacular!

Spectacular!!

Rented a car and took scenic byway from Portland Oregon through Washington. Stopped at the beautiful Multonomah falls and visited wineries along the way. The final stop was Timberline Lodge which was the backdrop for Stephen King film The Shining. Enjoy!!

Really impressive mountain and facilities

By RusPat_704 |

You must visit this mountain, there is skiing and snowboarding year round (early morning only in summer). The hiking trials are well maintained and even though a lot of people visit, it is not crowded on the trails.

The Most Beautiful Mountain in the Pacific Northwest

By Rick V |

Mt. Hood in my opinion is the most beautiful mountain in the entire Pacific Northwest. For me, it's the most symmetrical mountain along with one of the only ones in the area that holds onto it's snow the longest in the area. I think growing up with it in your backyard, you become a little bias. Regardless, take a trip up to Mt. Hood and take in the natural beauty of the area!

Fantastic scenic getaway

By Kalkiavatar5 |

It was expected to be pretty sunny weekend and decided to spend the weekend at Mount Hood. The drive was great from Portland and we landed in thick blanket of snow on the ground( expected that way). Great view from the mount top and at the mount itself. Family went for skiing ( I did not as I do not know anything about it) as the place has a great skiing value. Sunset was superb. Great place to have fun and has some good places to stay around. We stayed at Timberline Lodge ..great place to stay.

Amazing nature at its best!

Mt Hood is unbelievable and the beauty that surrounds it is breathtaking. The mountain is easily accessible and the near by towns and eateries are abundant.

Nice place of solitude

It was first solo travel experience. Planned it in the nick of the moment without even knowing what's there to see..Fortunately mother nature was favourable making it a memorable trip for me...

Early Summer Is the Best Time to View

By Chuck2010 |

Drove Mt Hood highway and enjoyed the views of Mt Hood from a distance ... the mountain is far more majestic from a distance than up close ... unfortunately, the haze/smoke put a damper on the skies and the mountain views in August ... well worth the visit

Amazing views

By Joemacpd |

We drove to Hood River and then to Mount Hood. The views are amazing. The cascades are a beautiful addition to any trip to Oregon.

All depends on the time of year and the weather

By BobN06 |

Went at the end of April when it was still wet and snowing at the higher elevations. On our day trip to the gorge we turned south down 35 for a bit and caught some great view over the apple orchards. The next day we drove to the south end but ran into clouds, light rain/sleet and crowds on the slopes. Probably best in winter for skiing and late summer for hiking.

Amazing scenery

By whtndt |

Visited whilst on a road trip and Mount Hood was just another scenery highlight in amongst a list of so many more.

Beautiful Vistas

By mike t |

This is a spectacular mountain and you should see it from as many perspectives as possible. There are lots of access points and make the time to see as many of them as possible.

Wonderful Area

By vacationgirl50 |

We stayed in the mount Hood area for 6 days and every day had plenty to do. Not only is the scenery amazing, but you have plenty of great places to stay, eat, hike, ski, and do zip-lining, backpacking etc. Just driving the area to see the beautiful, post card perfect, still active volcano is worth it.

Public transportation via mt hood express from portland

By Hoben01 |

So I stumbled on this option as a way of visiting mt hood while staying in Portland. It requires one to get to the sandy transit center, then catch a minibus from there to gresham transit center once there you transfer to the mt hood express for the rest of the ride. It can be a real bargain at the sandy stop let the driver know you are taking the mt hood express and they will issue you a round trip ticket for $5. Oh and it’s cash only driver has no change. The downside with this trip is that it will take upwards of three hours and its best to get on the road in the early morning make sure to check the schedule for the mt hood express and calculate backwards. For me the ride was not crowded until the leg for the mt hood express then all the Mta riders jammed on for the ride to Timberlake lodge.
As for mt hood in the summer I was surprised that skiing was still going on at Timberlake lodge by the way this ride operates seven days a week. I ended up doing a hike to paradise trail loop

Timberline Lodge, Mount

By Daniel S |

A must visit if in area. Built in 1939 it will take you back in time. A ski resort but all should visit. Amazing gigantic wooden pillars. Beautiful trails and views of Mount Hood. Something for everyone. Fine dining and bars. Nice place to kick back for a while.

PERFECT PLACE TO GO!

By pott1432 |

Mt.Hood is a must see! The drive up is just picture perfect, absolutely stunning, even in the snow and fog. Pick up a snowboarder on your way up the mountain in the winter! Timberline lodge is fun to walk around and visit. Weekends are busy with skiing, so if you are just going up to explore you might want to go during the week.

Incredible place

By Carn W |

Drove up to Mount Hood in a stunning Ford Mustang.

This place is great in winter but for those snowboarding lover, there is perpetual snow at the top. So, you could enjoy wearing t-shirt and shorts at the bottom of this mountain then get your W winter gear on at the top to go down those slopes.

We recently spent a day in the area with friends, taking a break from touring wineries. Everything around Mount Hood is gorgeous from Trillium Lake to Government Camp to all the hikes and sights around. Definitely worth the drive if you are in the area.

A spectacular mountain and Mount Hood stands out. Literally. A stratovolcano with at least one side vent, it is a marvel to see even taking off or landing at Portland airport.

Awesome views

We drove to Timberline Lodge which was built when FDR was president of the US. It’s amazing how it was built using the local resources. We took the ride up the ski lift for even better views. Really enjoyed the day-not a cloud in the sky.

A Must See in the Pacific Northwest

By diredd2017 |

If you haven't made your way up this mountain, by all means take the time. The Lodge, built in the 30's by the CCC is a wonder of craftsmanship nestled warmly in the breathtaking beauty of nature all around. Ride up the lifts even in summer, hike, inter tubing in winter as well as skiing are available. The majesty of a mountain like Mt. Hood is always a thrill to experience - and for those of you from the east coast - THIS is a mountain!

Viator - Mt hood, Columbia river gorge tour

By Rgd973 |

I visited Mt hood in Oregon as part of a tour I booked on Viator. The tour takes you through the Columbia river gorge, various waterfalls (which I reviewed separately) hood river, Mt Hood, the timberline lodge, a fruit orchard and even stopped at one place not on the itinerary. The Viator tour will pick you up at your hotel and drop you off, if you are staying at an Airbnb you can call them and they will give you a time and area to meet in Portland. Our tour guide Ross (an Oregon native) was very friendly and I felt at ease being on a small tour van as I was a solo traveler. There were about 12 people on our tour bus and everyone was respectful and courteous to the older folks as well as the younger ones. Ross would narrate the trip through his headphones and microphone and was an encyclopedia of Oregon history and knowledge. He didn't make many corny jokes (like some tour guides do) and he also respected our silence as we rode and looked at all the beautiful scenery around us. If you had any questions you were free to shout them out and he would answer them (and no question was a stupid one). Our first stop was the Vista house. The Vista house is an observatory and museum with loads of history much too involved to write about. It sits high above the gorge and you will have glorious views from all angles. We had enough time at each stop (10-30mins) to get a healthy dose and taste of each area we were sightseeing. We stopped at Lautorell falls, Wahkeena falls, Multnomah falls, horsetail falls, and Starvation Creek. Starvation creek was not on the mapped out tour and we were all more than thrilled to make this unexpected stop. We then headed to hood river for about an hour lunch break. Hood river is a hip little town with many restaurants, shops and a few beer breweries. The next stop was to an fruit orchard to buy some local produce, candy, souvenirs and browse around. We were now onward towards Mt. Hood and once I saw it, I was in awe. We stopped at a super large parking lot to take pictures of the mountain. Ross is more than happy to take your picture anytime you ask him. We then headed toward timberline lodge and I couldn't help but imagine that I was sitting in a small yellow Volkswagen Beetle heading toward "the shining motel". The drive to the hotel (6 miles up) was filmed in Montana but the timberline lodge in Oregon was where a lot of the exterior shots were filmed. Once you get there you will know. We toured the Timberline lodge for about 30 mins. A lot of snowboarders and hikers were around and they even had a classic car show in the parking lot. That was awesome. On the way out we went through the town of Government camp. A small village like community with a few stores, etc. At this point, I felt like I got a really good impression of the Pacific Northwest in all it's scenic beauty. The ride back was peaceful and it was great day. I highly recommend this tour. And don't forget to tip your tour guide. I work in the service industry and appreciate all the effort it takes to cater and accommodate all different walks of life. Thank you.

My Hood - great hike.

By Ken F |

What a great mountain to hike! Only issue is, despite it being the 2nd most hiked glaciated volcano in the world, the trail is very difficult to find and once on the snowfield it is nonexistent until you reach the Hogsback.

AMAZING "LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN"

By Sightseer642144 |

A beautiful drive lead us to the High Prairie Loop Trail!
Fantastic vistas of Mt Hood, Mt. Rainier, Mt Baker, Mt Jefferson, and Mt St. Helens, 3 Sisters, Columbia River Gorge-east side!
Fairly easy hike with about 500 feet of elevation gain...places to sit and relax, shade and sun, gorgeous fields of wildflowers, rock formations, craggy trees no trash, and silence (except for the hum of the bees)
.
What more could one want out of a day?

Timberline Lodge

By Mac M |

Visited Timberline Lodge while in Portland for work. The slopes were everything that i hoped for and more. Learned a couple of things that trip. I learned taxi and other transportation service up there is non existent. I took the shuttle from Sandy to the lodge thinking id save myself some trouble of not having an all wheel rental or chains to put on my tires. It was fine. The only issue is i wanted to go to the meadows too. Without a car, you are out of luck. Loved visiting but wish i had better prepared myself to get over to the other mountain.

Fun area summer or winter

By Hardtoplease75 |

A summer drive to and around My. Hood is a delight. It is just a nice getaway for a day and eating a meal almost anyplace on the mountain is a treat. You can picnic by a lake or take a hike or just drive and look around.

Stunning mountain

By msburddawg |

Drove up there on a day when some of forest fire smoke was lessened. On a clear day, the mountain was visible from Portland. We totally enjoyed the views, and Hood is stunning. Looked for some interpretive signs to tell us names of other visible peaks and a little more about Hoods history but didn't find such information. Ventured into interesting old lodge for a cup of coffee but most restaurant venues closed. It's worth the drive just for the beauty of this mountain

America the Beautiful!

By timonntour |

I believe this is one of the most peaceful and breath-taking sites in the Pacific Northwest. The air is clean, the mountain majestic, year-round snow skiing and all with in a two-hour drive of Portland. It was impossible to capture the beauty of Mt. Hood with a camera; the pictures simply do not let you feel the power of this volcano. I suggest you add it to your “must see’ list. Make sure you plan to spend a great deal of time walking this wonderful site you simply cannot feel the energy if you just stop by for a quick visit.

Stunning!

By Natasha M |

What's there not to love about the natural beauty of Mt Hood and the Columbia Gorge!!!! Stunning!!!!!!!!!!!

Something for everyone

By Carl16 |

We drove up to the Timberline Lodge which is as far as you can drive. The lodge was used in filming "The Shining" It was an interesting visit at the lodge. We then did a 4 hour hike on a well marked trail that was quite spectacular with great views of Mt Hood. There were also people snow boarding. The chair lift was running. So I guess you could also take that up the mountain too. This is a great place for a day trip.

One minute it is hidden by trees and the next it is right there in front of you

By 2born4m |

In the valley on our way to Mt. Hood, we passed orchards. On our climb up the gorge the uniform pines were dazzling to see them so perfectly spaced. There were a few pull offs and a distant view of Mt. Hood, so we took pictures. We were off again and all of a sudden it appeared so clearly we could not belief it. Our day was a bit foggy and breezy, but the sun came out at intervals and we waited for our chance. We got some wonderful shots of the peak with snow still on it. I could not believe how up close we felt to it. Don't do a quick tour bus drive by. Wait and get some wonderful pictures. Absolutely wonderful!!

Beautiful mountain

3 month cross country trip and Mt. Hood was one of our stops. We stayed at Lost Lake Campground which was a mistake. Wish we had stayed on the other side of the mountain where the ski village is.

Pray for a clear day!

It has been raining our entire trip in Oregon and we were starting to get depressed.
For some reason, it was bright and beautiful today with blue skies. We took one of the most scenic breathtaking drives to see Mt. Hood and it was well worth it.
Do your research first to see which are the best places to see the Mountain. It's even more amazing in person.

Stunning drive around Mt. Hood - A full day of waterfalls, valleys, apple orchards, breweries and more

By CraftBeers |

This is a gorgeous full day trip to experience all there is to see. I wished I had more time to explore. We started at noon on a beautiful fall day in October and ran out of light around 6:00 PM.

We started at the Portland airport and drove east along I-84 and the Columbia River. At Hood River, we hung a right and went south down Hwy 35. Where it intersected with Hwy 26; we hung another right and headed west back to Portland. The whole drive is 140 miles or 2 hrs and 45 minutes with no stops. Most of the time you cannot see Mt. Hood. It's either hidden from view by the trees and mountain ridges or there are clouds. Seeing Mt. Hood is cool, but it's not the only reason to do this circle.

The I-84 portion of the trip north of Mt. Hood is the Columbia Gorge. It's simply beautiful. Wahkeena and Multnomah Falls were accessible with no real hike. Plan to spend the morning along this section.

Lunch was at Hood River where you turn south. There were not a ton of options, but the river front area and brewery were perfect for us.

Hwy 35 along the eastern side of Mt. Hood is the Fruit Loop. I did not know it was there until we started seeing apple, pear and other fruit orchards. Dozens and dozens of road stands, markets and restaurants sell fresh fruit. The whole stretch is fun and beautiful. Find a spot that does cider tasting flights.

Along the southern side of the mountain, look for Government Camp and roads up into the mountain. This is the portion we had to skip due to time limit. Had we started earlier in the day we could have gone up the mountain to see the snow and views. In Government camp, there were some breweries to try out.

I highly recommend this drive!

Hood is GOOD!

By Russell W |

Awesome, majestic views. We viewed Mount Hood from a distance all the way to the Timberline Lodge, then took the Miracle Mile chairlift part way up the mountain where we saw more incredible views above the clouds. $20 for the chairlift.

One of the great areas in the U.S.

By liftman53 |

The mount hood area is hundreds of miles of trails, many more miles of wilderness roads, mountaintop views, a glacier, outstanding food, and endless views. You can spend many days exploring the area, and drive for hours without seeing another car. Great place to experience, just map you trip out carefully since there is so much to experience.

Awesome

By Ilene S |

We drove from the Hood River on rte 35 south in the morning to beat the crowds. Already snowboarders and skiers were everywhere (Sunday morning in July- go figure). We went into the Timberline Lodge and learned everything we could about the place. Then we had coffee sitting outside on the Adirondack chairs facing the mountain. It was a beautiful site. After we walked the path to get to the Pacific Crest Trail sign and took photos. We watched the skiers and snowboarders through our binoculars. Later in the day we drove on Lolo Pass Road which brings you to the backside of the mountain. Bad road conditions for a car. Best with a truck if you attempt it.

Perfect day trip for hiking and dining

By gammish |

We did a leisurely hike around some of Mt. Hood. We quickly learned it would be over 20 miles to walk around it if you start at the Timberline Lodge! More than what we bargained for so we walked a few miles around and then returned the same way. Good enough to give a workout and refill at the more casual restaurant in the lodge. On a beautiful sunny summer day you will see more dirt but a fair amount of snow and skiiers (surprise - it's year round skiing!). We did not catch any wild life unless you count humans but we did not digress from the populated trails. Enjoy!

Mt Hood Lovely; Timberline Lodge Walks; ZigZag Falls

By Traveler O |

Drove from Portland through Columbia Gorge - lots of great waterfalls and vistas. Stayed in Hood River Best western then drove through fruit and lavender valleys to Timberline Lodge. Got a last minute reservation at the Lodge - don't be afraid to ask to change to a better room if get stuck near dining smells. Great short and long walks from the lodge. food is a bit pricey.
Next day went to Zig Zag Falls - really nice and fairly easy walk for a moderate distance. watch for the kiwanis camp sign as easy to miss. on north side of US Hwy 26. Trillium lake was ok; i prefered zig zag falls.

Mountain Views

By wohdonkey |

We were staying in the area and had great views of Mount Hood from our Airbnb room. You can also see it driving around the area. It’s amazing how many different views you can get from different locations. We also visited a local lavender farm which provided perfect views. You can also see it well from Panorama Point. We had pretty clear weather when we were there so we were able to see it well in all locations.

Beyond Words to describe Mt Hood !

By TomQuinlan19 |

9/8/16- You must go up to Timberline Lodge. There`s so much History here. The lodge was build under Teddy Roosevelts WPA.
Take time to see the video presentation.

What a great day!

By schmutaki |

There is nothing like this back east. The mountain is beautiful. We visited the Timberline Lodge which is excellent. We took the Magic Mile skyride which was thrilling. Check out the little chipmunks at the top amongst the rocks. We finished with a visit to Trillium Lake which had perhaps the best views of the mountain. Mount Hood is a terrific place.

Yeah, it's a mountain

By Old Pro |

My wife drags be up here every time one of her friends visits. Yeah, it's a mountain. The biggest disappointment is that during the summer the mountain used to be covered in a veil of white snow. These days it is dry and barren like a desert. Not at all pleasing to the eye. Top this off with a ski lodge donning not just one, but two restaurants offering disagreeable, and you have a viable excuse to avoid this place with a passion.

The only reason I gave it three stars instead of just one is that there are some very nice Scenic views along the way

A beautiful place to see

By Janell B |

We went to the beautiful Timberline Lodge and enjoyed the scenery and a buffet lunch in the lodge. The lunch was delicious and the WPA era lodge was beautiful.

Amazing view

By John L |

A tremendous drive to the top,and well worth it just to view the Timberline Lodge. The road up goes through a forest of the densest and tallest evergreen trees that I have ever seen. People ski all year up there. The lodge was built in the 30's and is a must see. I was up there about 10 AM. By noon clouds rolled in and obscured the peak, so things are hit and miss. The road is good and well maintained, but if you go in the Winter you will need chains for your tires.

Majestic View

By minimize940314 |

Majestic view. You don't get to see the mountain easily since the top can be quickly covered by clouds at any time. Check the weather before you go and you should be able to admire the beautifully rugged mountain in a distance.

Fun hiking

By Lubna A |

We went to the meadow view for a ride in the cable car. It was a fun ride and our 6-year-old son enjoyed it. Later we went to Timberline Lodge from where we hiked almost to the top of Mount Hood. It was summer and the ice had melted. So it was easy to hike.

Huge park and hiking

Mount hood national park is very large with many waterfalls, wineries and hiking. Plan ahead since cell service is sketchy with what you want to see. Mount Hood is beautiful all year round! Even in the middle of summer it had snow on the top! The surrounding area is so green and scenic. Creeks, woodlands, etc. make it such an enjoyable drive! Pack a lunch or stop at one of the many roadside places. Just make sure you take it all in so you will remember to come back!

My mountain crush everyday!

By adventuresof_jade_ |

Ever since we moved to the PNW our favorite days are the ones where we can see Mount Hood on the way to and from work.
Recently we visited the other side of Mount Hood in the Mount Hood meadows area and we hiked to Umbrella falls and Sahale falls.
This is about a 3 mile roundtrip hike.
Umbrella was my favorite and you start the hike with Umbrella falls.
Sahale was gorgeous too, we just couldn't get very close to it, looks like there had been a mud slide and the trail was inacessible.
Mount Hood is one of the top mountains in the PNW.
We love driving to it as often as possible and exploring new areas to hike around the mountain.

The King of Mountains

Really enjoyed our trip to Mount Hood. Summer skiing/snowboarding looked very nice. We visited the Timberline Lodge which has a great history and would be a great place to stay. Also really enjoyed the ski lift & sled rides down in the West Bowl. Scenery all around the area is beautiful and makes the drive up alone well worth the time!

We drive to Mount Hood and stop at Timberlkine lodge on a rainy day but even in such a weather it was sooo beauiful all ariund it and all the way up to the lodge. We could not see Mount Hood due to the fog and rain but the surrounding area was a delight.

Stunning

By The_Wanderer1992 |

My husband and I took a half a day trip to Mount Hood and fell in love with the area. It was a Friday morning and there was minimal cars around to ruin the experience. We randomly found a pull off a for Trillium Lake which offered one of the most beautiful sights you can see. Once you leave the National Forest area, you are in in area with vineyards and orchards. Of course, they also have ski lodges and such that you can go to in Mount Hood if you're into that. It's a beautiful drive and definitely recommended.

Soooo beautiful!

By Melinda P |

So many neat things to do around Mt. Hood! We stayed at Hood River - love this little town! It is a beautiful volcano that has snow on it all year long! Many outdoor activities are available such as skiing, biking, hiking, exploring, beaches nearby on the Columbia River. Love this area so much!

Incredible

By Mr Coffee News |

Who knew? I'm sure thousands but I didn't know much about Mt Hood except hearing the name a few times. The village of Government House is so perfect. Like out of a movie. Driving to the top was breathtaking. Being able to drive a route around it to the cool town of Hood River. Priceless. Do this trip.

We traveled all over the Columbia River Gorge and Mt Hood area doing some stops on the fruit loop and going up to the Timberline Lodge through a blizzard to get up there, amazing lodge, later in the day we were able to see Mt Hood when the Clouds parted and it was outstanding.

An awesome scenic drive.

Awesome scenic drive! We drove from Madras up 26 through the Warm Springs Reservation straight toward Mount Hood and then turned off on 35 north toward Hood River, going right past Mount Hood. This was part of our "volcano" tour that started at Lassen and ended at Rainier. Views of Mount Hood on this drive are amazing. We also saw Mount Jefferson (south) and Mount Adams (north) on this drive. Sweet!

One of the Most Beautiful and Majestic Sites in the Portland Area

By Grover R |

One of the most beautiful and majestic sites of any greater Portland visit is Mount Hood. The Cascade volcano that looms above the city is a beautiful mountain a worth a visit. The best way to see it is drive east from the city to the summit. Along the way you get great views, but the best place is from the Timberline Lodge. There is parking there and skiing that is available much of the year. However, if you go in early September, the snow gives way to some good hiking. It is a great thing to see and experience any time of year.

Year Round Snow

By James I |

While staying in Portland I wanted to experience some of the great natural scenery the state has to offer, so a ride around Mt Hood seemed like a good idea. If driving yourself there, I recommend driving along the river gorge if you have the time. Stop at the Timberline Lodge once there if you get a chance. There are people skiing and snowboarding all year round so get there early in the summer if you plan to join them. Driving the loop around the mountain and through the national forest gave some great views and a couple places to stop along the way where you can really observe the mountain at your leisure.

Great views

This is a very beautiful place with lots of outdoor activities to do in any season. It is also jive to enjoy the views of the mountain in the surrounding areas.

Absolutely Gorgeous

The drive up is some of the most beautiful country in the US. You get to experience the fruit loop along the way and if you stop off in Parkedale you can get more amazing views of the mountain and also delicious barbecue at Apple Valley BBQ

Fruit Loop all the way

By Marilyn M |

My birth place and such a beautiful drive any time of the year with lots of scenery, places to stop and taste the wonderful fruit and goodies along the way. Fruit Loop is a joy to go on. All the way from Hood River to Odell, to Parkdale, Dee and back to Hood River and seeing the majestic beauty of The Hood just about wherever you drive. Takes my breath away every time I see it.

Go East young man .....

Leave Portland and travel east along the Columbia River to The Hood River Country, and the majestic Mount Hood.
The spectacular, surrounding vistas center on this picture perfect, snow-covered and inactive, volcanic peak a short drive East of Portland, OR.
The drive up through forests, along rushing glacial-melt streams and rivers, up twisting and turning switchbacks as you climb to the Forest Service Lodge and Ski lift make this a definite addition to any trip to the Northwest!

Make the iconic drive

Views of Mt Hood are superb. Drive SR 26 or 35 to Timberline Resort and take it all in. You can even ski it in June . Breathtaking! Also an excellent view from the Pavillion at the Japanese Gardens in Portland on a clear day.

The most beautiful view

By JanMagnusson99 |

It was a perfect time of the year and a perfect day with clear skies. The whole valley was covered with blossom Apple and Pear trees and the majestic Mount Hood in the background. There is a special Panoramic view Point mot to be missed. This must be one of the most beautiful places on Earth!

Mount Hood in the early morning

By vmckin |

The trails around the Timberline Lodge in the early morning are very beautiful. Mount Hood has snow year around with skiing and snowboarding available.

Amazing views as you drive to My Hood

By marie p |

Moubt Hood stands tall at over 6000 feet with snow still on the mountain the stark white look amazing. Skiers and snow boarders were having a brilliant time. Timberlake lodge is a wonder of man and women's building and creative talents.

Always a treat !

By bob l |

Go up to Timberline, and go on a hike; some are easy and some are difficult. You can talk to people there, and find out which is right for you. Food at the restaurant is OK; a bit spendy. There are great views from the front and back of the lodge. You might need chains in winter to get there, and watch out for icy roads !

A MUST visit on any trip to Portland

By Elizabeth H |

Went on one of the many hiking trails. The moss covered, old growth forest, was surely worth the trip. The quality of light, sights & sounds of running water were a welcome change. Would return over & over again.

Incredible

Very beautiful location. Mount Hood, valley and hood river... breath taking experience. Good road. Best for a drive.

Majestic

It can be tricky seeing peak between the clouds. Absolutely gorgeous and indescribable. Definitely a must see. We caught some nice photos from Trillium Lake, too

Gorgeous Mountain from any Angle

By TheExplorerFamily |

Mount Hood is considered to be an active volcano. While it is currently in a period of dormancy, it has erupted sporadically, and likely to do it again in the future. The US Geological Survey monitors its seismic activity continuously to assess the dangers. We were glad that everything is calm and safe right now.

Having said that, it was a beautiful mountain to see from near and far. We had a close-up view from the Timberline Lodge. We walked up the trail for a short distance making small snowballs to throw at each other. The road was a little slippery, and we did not have the right kind of shoes, so we returned to the Lodge for some refreshments before heading back to Portland with our tour group.

The scenic drive to come here had a whole bunch of spectacular views of this well-known icon of this area. Fortunately for me, I was even able to spot it from the airplane window and capture some amazing photos of it with the sunset in the background.

A “Must Visit” for sure.

Beautiful from all angles

By Greg M |

You can see it from Panorama Point in Hood River, from Trillium Lake near Timberline Lodge, and best from the Lodge itself.

Volcanic Icon in Oregon

By Skippy000 |

Amazingly beautiful scenery! The mountain is accessible by road with all the usual facilities available at Timberline Lodge, including plenty of parking. Summer ski-ing is available in the ice fields of the upper slopes and the views of the Cascade Range (including Mt Jefferson) are impressive. At the bottom of the hill, take the time to visit the State Park at Trillium Lake (off Hwy 26) for a spectacular reflection of the mountain

A picture perfect day.

If you cannot see Mt. Hood from Portland and Pittock Mansion, then take a chance and head off to Mt, Hood. We were totally disappointed that the smoke from the fires had the Hood invisible. We stayed two nights in Hood River and took a drive to Lost Lake and Mount Hood. It was perfectly and totally clear and gorgeous. We spent the entire day in that area and when we headed back towards Portland, it was foggy and misty again. We learned after 10 days in that area that you could be fogged in in one area and in another area it will be clear.

We didn't have time to visit, but the views from the plane were incredible. Also, you can see the mountain well from various points in the city.

A beautiful Drive up the Mountain

While staying in Hood River we decided to head up Mount Hood for some dinner at Timberline Lodge. What a beautiful September Drive. The road is very good.

the pride of oregon

By mrc282 |

the best time to visit is either

1. winter for skiing, and the ski season last until august

or

2. summer for hiking, with july-august the best for wildflowers

there are several ways to see mt hood:

1. hood river fruit loop
the view from mountain view orchards is pretty spectacular with vineyard as your foreground

2. trillium lake
$10 day entry fee. best visited in the early morning before the parking lot becomes full. lots of families come here for watersport.

3. mirror lake
$5 day parking fee. 1.5h return hike. view is not as great as trillium lake

4. timberline lodge
one ski lift (magic mile sky ride) operates in the summer at $20 and drop you off at the top somewhere near the silcox hut. just hike it, it takes about 45 min uphill

5. mount hood meadows
one ski lift (#4 stadium express) operates in the summer during thurs-mon or you could walk as well any day to save $20

hiking trails on the SE and SW face of mt hood appears to be the best for wildflowers photos with mt hood as backdrop.

happy travels

Pretty drive

Good restaurant on the mountain. Good skiing and trail hiking. Avoid end of August as the Hood to Coast relay starts here and draws crowds.

We gasped as Mount Hood appeared in view!

By Kathy D |

My son (age 29) and I were taking the scenic drive known as "The Infinity Loop". Coming east from Portland, Oregon, I-84 follows the Columbia River upstream. A parallel road is called the Historic Columbia River Hwy, where you can see numerous waterfalls near the road. At the town of Hood River, turn right onto Hwy 35. The road passes some orchards and vineyards. Then it turns a corner, and suddenly Mount Hood appears. Gasp! Hwy 35 loops around Mount Hood and joins Hwy 26, heading you back towards Portland.

Northwest Jewel

Visited in late fall to a dusting of snow on the trees. Beautiful! I loved going in the Timberline Lodge and being overwhelmed with the magnificance of the place. They just don't make them like that any more.

Interesting drive to beautiful views

By philthesave |

Our day was intended to visit wineries, but since most wineries open at 11 AM, this was a good way to start the day. Mt. Hood is about an hour drive south from Hood River, with the last 2 miles as a winding drive to the end of the road at beautiful Timberline Lodge. View of the Mountain was somewhat obscured by smoke from wildfires, but it was a beautiful view. It is worth the trip.

This was one of the best hikes of my life. Don't miss it

By MasonsDad |

I hiked 20 miles around and on mount hood. It is peaceful and serene and a great place to reflect. The drive to the base of the mountain is incredible and picturesque.
