Dujiangyan Scenic Area

Dujiangyan is located in the west of Dujiangyan City, Chengdu.

Located on the Minjiang River in the west of Chengdu Plain,

It was first built in the last years of King Zhao of Qin (approximately 256-251 BC).

It is a large-scale water conservancy project organized and built by Li Bing, the prefect of Shu County, and his sons, based on the foundation of the previous work of Bi Ling.

The full price of the scenic spot ticket is 90 yuan.

Student ID cards are half price, and there is a free monthly ticket grab event in the off-season in December. I went there when the free tickets were available in December.

Opening hours are from 8 am to 6 pm.



First, let's talk about the travel strategy:

If you are departing from downtown Chengdu,

It is recommended to take Metro Line 2 and get off at Xipu Metro Station

(From Chunxi Road to Xipu, there are 15 stops in total, which takes about 46 minutes and costs 6 yuan)

Then take the intercity railway from Xipu Station to Dujiangyan Station.

Walk about 3 minutes from Dujiangyan Station to the high-speed rail Dujiangyan Station bus stop, then take the Dujiangyan Scenic Area Direct Bus to Lidui Park Bus Stop, and walk 2 minutes forward to the main entrance of Dujiangyan.

Xipu Subway Station - Dujiangyan Scenic Area, with two transfers, takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes and costs 14 yuan.

Alternatively, you can take the intercity railway C6157 (departs at 3:29 pm, takes 40 minutes, costs 10 yuan) directly from Xipu Station to Lidui Park Station, and then walk 1 kilometer to reach the Dujiangyan Scenic Area.

Generally, you can enter from the entrance of Dujiangyan Lidui Park and visit the important attractions in Dujiangyan Scenic Area in succession, including: Lidui Park (entrance), Fulong Temple, Baopingkou, Feishayan, Yuzui Diversion Dike, Anlan Cable Bridge, Qinyan Tower, Erwang Temple, Songmao Ancient Road, Xiguan, Yuxi Pavilion, City God Temple, Yuxi Mountain (park exit), etc.



Let's talk about the core attractions recommended:

Firstly, Baopingkou, Feishayan and Yuzui are the three main projects that constitute the hub of Dujiangyan water conservancy project, and you must visit them. Among them, Yuzui diversion dike can be said to be the core of the "Dujiangyan Water Worship" tour of this water conservancy project.



Secondly, Yuxi Pavilion and Qinyan Tower are the two best viewpoints for viewing Dujiangyan from a high place, and they are also not to be missed. Yuxi Pavilion is the highest, but it may be blocked by fog and affect the viewing effect. I recommend Qinyan Tower, which is the best place to overlook the panoramic view of Dujiangyan, and you can clearly take a panoramic view of the Dujiangyan water conservancy project here (the Erwang Temple on the right side of Qinyan Tower, which is also high, can be visited together).



Third, you have to walk on the Anlan Cable Bridge (also known as the Couple Bridge/He Gong and He Mu Bridge, right next to the Fish Mouth). You should know that the Anlan Cable Bridge is one of the five famous ancient bridges in my country, along with the Zhaozhou Bridge and the Lugou Bridge (the other two ancient bridges are the Xiangzi Bridge and the Luoyang Bridge). It is also a world cable bridge architectural model and a national key cultural relic protection site. It was built when Li Bing built the weir. The love story of He Xiande and his wife is also spread on this bridge.



Fourthly, not far from the entrance of Lidui Park, there is a tree marked "Zhangsong Ginkgo". It is the "Ginseng Fruit Tree" that appeared many times in the TV series "Journey to the West" and it cannot be ignored.



Fifth, the Nanqiao (night view) and Guanxian Ancient City next to Dujiangyan are also very good. It is very convenient to eat, stay and travel in Guanxian Ancient City (an ancient city accompanied by a thousand-year-old weir) at night.

🚆If you only go to Dujiangyan like me, you can buy the intercity ticket from Xipu to Dujiangyan. You can take the subway to Xipu without exiting the station and transfer directly to the intercity. It only takes half an hour to reach Dujiangyan Station.

🚌From the Dujiangyan express train station, you can take the bus or tourist train to the scenic area. There are two (san) routes to choose from in the scenic area.

1️⃣no.1 Take the bus to Lidui Park, enter Lidui Park, and exit Lidui Park. Walk from Yuzui and Feishayan to Baopingkou. At this time, if you want to go to the top of the mountain to see the whole view and Erwang Temple, you will have to walk more and need to go up the mountain and then come down.

2️⃣no.2 Take the bus to Erwang Temple, enter Erwang Temple, and exit at Lidui Park. Walk down from the mountain, you can go up to Qinyan Tower to see the whole view of Dujiangyan, then walk down the mountain, cross the Anlan Cable Bridge, see Baopingkou, Yuzui, Feishayan in turn, and walk to Lidui Park.

I took route 2️⃣, which I think will save energy. It is important to note that you must listen to the explanations in Dujiangyan. In places like Baopingkou and Yuzui, you can follow the tour group, or rent an interpreter at the entrance of the scenic spot, which requires a cash deposit.

Dujiangyan is indeed worth a visit. I cannot judge whether it deserves such praise, but when the tour guide of Dujiangyan introduced such a great project, the pride in his tone was indeed sincere. I did some research before going there and searched Baidu about the operating principle of Dujiangyan, but it was still vague. This kind of understanding can only be experienced on site.

It only takes about 10 minutes to walk from Dujiangyan Railway Station to the entrance of Dujiangyan Scenic Area. No transportation is needed. The ticket is 80 yuan. It is a few yuan cheaper to buy it online, but you don’t have to queue up to buy tickets. You can directly exchange tickets at the online ticket window. Here I would like to remind everyone not to use the so-called gold medal commentary, which is a WeChat applet. Most of the explanations are not detailed and many details are missing. If you are not short of money, you can hire a scenic spot commentator. Not only can you hear the detailed uses of each part of Dujiangyan, but you can also ask questions. To enter the scenic area, walk directly from Xuanhua Gate, walk to Nanqiao, and cross to the other side. Nanqiao is nice and it is also the first and most convenient place to see the water after the river passes the weir.

After crossing the bridge, you will reach the ticket office. After exchanging your ticket, you will enter. The first attraction is actually Lidui Park.

There are some cultural buildings on the mountain, such as Erwang Temple, Yulei Pavilion, Xiguan, and the ancient road. In fact, the whole mountain is not very high, and it is good to climb slowly. The steepest and longest climb is from Xiguan to Yulei Pavilion.

You can come out directly from Yulei Pavilion, there are no more attractions. In fact, every attraction on the mountain is meaningful, but I didn’t have a tour guide...

🚌After getting off the high-speed rail, you can buy bus tickets to Dujiangyan scenic spots, which is highly recommended. First, the tickets are cheap, second, they are regular operating vehicles, and third, there are actually tour guides on the bus to introduce you to the attractions and help you buy tickets, which saves you a lot of worry.

📷The first scenic spot after entering the scenic area is Yulei Pavilion. After Yulei Pavilion, there are Erwang Temple, Husband and Wife Bridge, Yuzui and other scenic spots.

👍Since February is not the rainy season, the river water is not big, but when I saw this water conservancy project in person, I still admire Li Bing who lived more than 2,000 years ago.

🚶From the parking lot to the entrance of Dujiangyan, you need to walk along a long commercial street with shops on both sides, and finally reach South Street. 💡The Dujiangyan Scenic Area is 30% looking and 70% listening. We traveled independently and sometimes listened to the explanations. In addition, we looked at the diagrams, which gave us a general understanding of the principles of water control and made us admire Li Bing and his son even more.

[Baopingkou] is the second water diversion point, which divides the Yangtze River into the inner river and the outer river. Water is diverted for irrigation during droughts and the sluice gates are blocked during rains, ensuring the irrigation of 3 million mu of fertile farmland and making Chengdu a land of abundance where harvests can be guaranteed regardless of drought or flood.

The huge [Yuzui Diversion Dam] divides the Minjiang River into the Inner River and the Outer River, and diverts water without a dam, achieving a 4:6 flood diversion and a 2:8 sand drainage.

[Anlan Cable Bridge] It's a swaying bridge, which is very interesting. It's easy to get dizzy!

After passing the Erwang Temple, you will reach the Songmao Ancient Road. From here you can return to the starting point, but the journey is long, so people usually turn back here.

First, go to the ticket office to pick up your ticket (the ticket is 90 yuan, you can book it online or buy it directly on site).

After entering the main gate, you can follow the tourist map behind the ticket to see the panoramic view of Dujiangyan. It takes about 3-4 hours to tour the entire scenic area.

In fact, if time permits and you are not afraid of walking, it is recommended that you do not take the electric car. After all, the scenery and air along the way are very good. Only by walking slowly and appreciating it slowly can you better appreciate the charm of this great project of ancient and modern times.

Personally, I think there are several must-visit places in Dujiangyan. The first is to go to Fulong Temple to pay homage to the stone statue of Li Bing and learn about the life and major achievements of Li Bing and his son. Then you can go to Baopingkou, Feishayan, Yuzui, Anlan Ancient Bridge, Qinyan Tower, Songmao Ancient Road, Yulei Pass, etc. Before going to Dujiangyan, it is best to learn relevant water conservancy knowledge or take a tour guide, which will be of certain benefit for the on-site visit.

It's the perfect time to go to Dujiangyan, the weather is right and the scenery is beautiful. The blue water of the Minjiang River is very comfortable when you first see it.

I drove there from Chengdu. When I got off the highway, there was a display screen that said that parking spaces in Dujiangyan Scenic Area were tight and I needed to take a detour to the North Gate. After entering the North Gate parking lot, there was a road on the side that led to the main gate. I wanted to save ten minutes of walking, so I walked through the parking lot and parked my car in a parking area opposite the main gate. It was free, haha.

The ticket price is 80 yuan, and you can save 2 yuan by buying it on Meituan. After checking your ticket, go in through the north gate.

I walked directly to the Anlan Cable Bridge. It was windy yesterday and the bridge was a bit shaky. My legs were weak. After walking across the Anlan Cable Bridge, I went to the famous Fish Mouth. The river water was blue and really beautiful. Then I just walked along the way. I won’t go into details. Anyway, there is only one road. The scenery here is pretty good. There is a garden and a small lake inside. It is very pleasant and comfortable.

Then I walked out of the gate and went to the South Bridge. There were people performing at the South Bridge and it was very lively. After crossing the South Bridge, you can go to West Street to stroll around and have something to eat. Then I walked to the Ten Palaces. I didn't go to Yulei Park. Instead, I passed through the City God Temple and walked along the Songmao Ancient Road to the Erlang Temple. There is a vegetarian restaurant on the right side of the Erlang Temple. It costs 10 cents per serving. If I hadn't eaten enough on West Street, I would have tried it.

After visiting Erwang Temple, you can go to Yulei Pavilion on the right. You need to take the Buyun Corridor escalator for 40 yuan per person. It is a very long elevator. I heard that you can see the whole picture of Dujiangyan from the top of Yulei Pavilion, but I didn't want to spend 40 yuan. Some people say that there is a bluestone road to go up, which is a little tiring, but the scenery is very good. But I didn't find it, so I returned the same way. From Erwang Temple, I went to Qinyan Tower on the left. The building is very high, and the scenery on the top of the building is also very good. You can also see the whole Dujiangyan. So if you don't want to spend money to go to Yulei Pavilion, just go directly to Qinyan Tower. After seeing Qinyan Tower, I went down the mountain and went out through the north gate.

I walked this route by myself, mainly because I was afraid that it would be difficult to park at the main gate, so I followed the opposite direction of the crowd and walked a whole circle. I felt pretty good and didn't have to worry about being crowded. There were also plenty of parking spaces at the north gate. I don't think you need to hire a tour guide or buy an audio guide to go to Dujiangyan.

Then, the parking lot is very small and will be full very early, and there is basically no backup parking. The last kilometer took me more than an hour to get there, and I was really heartbroken.



Third, the catering in the scenic area is relatively simple, there is basically no "restaurant", only street stalls + instant noodles level fast food



Finally, if it is rainy (it often rains in Chengdu), there is basically no place to hide from the rain in the scenic area. You have to bring your own umbrella and raincoat. And it is unrealistic to take beautiful photos of the misty rain, because this is not the misty rain in Jiangnan, it is really just cloudy and rainy.

As soon as I got out of the high-speed rail station, I heard the majestic sound of water. This can be regarded as the back door of Dujiangyan, and my mood was also stirred like the water. It takes ten minutes to walk to the gate of Dujiangyan. The South Bridge next to the gate is more brilliant at night. There are sightseeing buses inside Dujiangyan, but you can only get on and off at the entrance and Yuzui. If your physical strength allows, you can still choose to walk. Several major attractions are relatively concentrated. There are quite a lot of tour guides, and we also listened for a while. Some waters are calm, some are turbulent, and when several streams meet, the colliding vortex brings up waves, which is really spectacular. The scenic spot actually has the beauty of ancient gardens. In addition to the free explanation, the scenic spot also provides paid gold medal explanations, which may be more detailed and interesting, but I, who am stingy, did not experience it.

When I went up to Fulong Temple, Baopingkou suddenly appeared in front of me. It was also the first time I saw the water of Minjiang River. The water was like jasper, and the light green color was particularly crystal clear.

When you come to Dujiangyan, you must worship the water. Climb to the highest point of Dujiangyan Mountain and worship in the direction of the water flow according to the Taoist ritual of bowing. When we reached the top of Yulei Mountain along the Buyun Corridor escalator, it was already 17:20. The staff said that the escalator would be closed at 17:30. At this time, the snow was getting heavier, so we hurried down the mountain.

Dujiangyan Irrigation System is located in the west of Dujiangyan City, Sichuan Province. It is a large-scale water conservancy project built in ancient China and still in use today. It is known as the "ancestor of the world's water conservancy culture". The Dujiangyan Irrigation System was built by Li Bing, the governor of Shu County in the Qin State, and his son around 256 BC. Because I think that for such a great water conservancy project, although there are free explanations on the Internet, I think it is more convenient to rent an interpreter, so I spent 20 yuan on rent and 100 yuan on deposit to rent an interpreter. The interpreter has its own positioning function and automatically explains when it arrives at the place, but this interpreter cannot choose to replay by itself, and in the later tour, it was also found that there were also cases where no explanation appeared when it arrived at the place, and it could not be manually selected to play. I wanted to return it and then gave up on the principle of not getting angry when I came out to play. There are recommended tour routes on the interpreter. Walk along the river for a while to reach Yuzui. If you don't like to walk, you can also take a battery car at your own expense next to the Feishayan Observation Deck. It takes about 4 hours to visit the entire Dujiangyan. If you have limited time and physical strength, you can cross the Anlan Cable Bridge to the Erwang Temple, and then return to the Lidui Gate by the same route. There will be a performance of the water release ceremony at the exit of the north gate of the Dujiangyan Scenic Area at regular intervals. The ticket price is not cheap, so I didn't watch it.

Walk a little further and you will see the Yuzui Diversion Dike, which is the most spectacular and worth seeing place in the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project and can be regarded as the essence of Dujiangyan. Come to Chengdu for a 6-day trip, the first day is Dujiangyan, and the second to sixth days are in Chengdu city.

I got off the plane at 9:30 and took a direct bus to Dujiangyan at 11:00 (there is a direct bus to the scenic area in the airport, you can ask the staff). When I arrived at the entrance of the scenic area, I crossed the South Bridge to have dinner across the street, checked into the hotel (booked online), put my luggage away, and then entered the scenic area.

It happened to rain on the day I went. If you have the energy and time, you can cross the bridge from Yuzui, climb the mountain, and exit from the east gate.

Yuzui divides the water, Feishayan deposits silt, and Baopingkou diverts water into the Chengdu Plain. It seems that the mountain is a bit high, but in fact, it is all relatively flat stone steps. Generally, there should be no big problem for the elderly. If you have passed the Anlan Cable Bridge, don't go back the same way, because I think the Songmao Ancient Road is only close. Exit "Yulei Pass" is the "Dujiangyan West Gate Ticket Office", and the Dujiangyan Scenic Area ends here. There is a sign not far away, we chose West Street, and the other road is to Chenghuang Temple. It takes less than 10 minutes to walk down the mountain to West Street, which is very close. West Street is a very distinctive street, which I think is more distinctive than South Street.

It's one of the must-see attractions in Chengdu. It's quite big inside and you can spend half a day there. The weather was cool when I went there. There were people selling cucumbers on the road, haha.
