Dongba Valley Scenic Area

东巴谷风景区

Dongba Valley is located at the foot of Yulong Snow Mountain in Yunnan (you need to use Omo oxygen to combat altitude sickness when traveling), fifteen kilometers away from Lijiang Ancient Town. It is a natural ecological canyon, a fault valley torn apart during the ancient mountain-building movement. It is currently the only way to enter the Yulong Snow Mountain Scenic Area.
Dongba Valley is 90 kilometers long. There are all kinds of stalactites, dead vines, strange trees, strange rocks, rare birds, singing birds, and waterfalls in the valley. After being discovered by the locals, it was named Dongba Valley. In Naxi language, it is called "Lumei Luo", which means a very big valley in Chinese.
When you enter Dongba Valley, you will see a slightly wider Dongba Square and the narrow "Craftsman Street" behind it. In the square, young men and women of various ethnic groups in colorful dresses and high spirits are singing and dancing enthusiastically, welcoming every visitor to Dongba Valley.

Dongba Valley lies at the foot of Yulong Snow Mountain in Yunnan, 15 kilometers from Lijiang Old Town. The road to Yulong Snow Mountain passes through here. The Dongba script is known as the "only living hieroglyphic script," and the Dongba Scriptures, written in Dongba script, are widely circulated throughout China and many European and American countries. The area boasts a rich ethnic atmosphere, though communication with the locals can be somewhat challenging.

The mysterious and intricate Dongba murals are the pride of the Naxi people. "Climbing a mountain of knives and descending a sea of fire" is a Lisu expression expressing their willingness to endure fire and water to repay a favor. The doors of houses here are low, but the thresholds are high, so you enter first.

The old Dongba grandfather kept speaking Dongba language to me. I didn’t know if it was my grandfather, but he looked like me anyway. I asked his granddaughter, “What did your grandfather say?” The granddaughter said she didn’t know, Dongba language is only passed down to men, not women. . . I left with a confused look on my face.

I went there in 2008. It's a very meaningful attraction. I still remember buying a book about Dongba script, and then the performance of walking on a mountain of swords and diving into a sea of fire, and the custom of walking marriage. It seems that the woman would light a candle in the window, and if the man could climb up the steep wall, he would... But I'm not in good health and I really can't climb up because it's too high.

On the way to Yulong Snow Mountain Scenic Area, we passed Dongba Grand Canyon. The driver said that he would drive slowly and let us take pictures, and asked us to take pictures of the cracks in the Grand Canyon.

Located at the foot of Yulong Snow Mountain in Yunnan Province, Dongba Valley is one of Yunnan Province's renowned cultural sites. It is renowned for its unique Dongba culture. The Dongba script, often called "the only living hieroglyphic language," is also known as the Dongba Scriptures, which are widely circulated throughout China and many European and American countries.

This Dongba cultural heritage site preserves the traditional simplicity of the Naxi people. Facing you stands a totem pole carved with a human face and a dragon body. Along the roadside are numerous wooden signs with hieroglyphs. Amidst the curling mist, the mystical wonders of the Dongba Valley are evident.

The Dongba Valley is primarily inhabited by the Naxi people, who maintain a matrilineal clan structure. Other ethnic groups include the Lisu, Taliu, Pumi, Mosuo, and Tibetan. Each ethnic group has its own distinct culture, yet they blend seamlessly together.

Under the guidance of the tour guide, we visited the living environment of ethnic minorities, listened to the tour guide's introduction to the customs and habits of the six ethnic groups, and watched the performances and displays of the life scenes of the six ethnic groups, such as the Naxi people's knife mountain and sea of fire and the Mosuo daughter's walking marriage building, etc.

The mountains of swords and seas of fire look really unbelievable.

The ethnic characteristics are strong, and the people are very kind and pure. I like it very much!

It is also a place you pass by on the way to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. I think it is similar to Yu Shui Zhai and there is nothing special to say. You can go there to briefly learn about Dongba culture.

In the Dongba Valley Scenic Area, I didn’t get to see the canyon, and the ethnic village is all man-made landscapes. I felt totally cheated, it’s really not worth it, I won’t regret it if I don’t go! ! !

Dongba Valley is adjacent to the ancient city of Lijiang and is one of the famous cultural relics in Yunnan Province.

By Big Head Girl |

In fact, it is just a sparsely populated open space. Compared with the snow-capped mountains, it is more suitable for taking pictures. The scenery is still very beautiful, but they are all man-made attractions.

By Water and Sky |

My second visit to Lijiang saw a lot of changes in the scenery. The old town has become more commercial, and the tour guide said that there are not many original residents in the old town now, as most of them have rented out their houses.

When I was riding to Yuhu Village, I passed Dongba Valley, but I didn’t go in because I wasn’t very interested.

By gimoon |

It's a very ordinary man-made scenic spot that reflects ethnic customs.

In fact, this Dongba is not the Danba in Sichuan. This place has Dongba culture. Located at the foot of Yulong Snow Mountain in Yunnan, adjacent to Lijiang Old Town, it is one of the famous cultural relics in Yunnan Province.

It's still fun. I've been there many times and I always think it's great.

By Sara |

I went there in winter and felt that Dongba Valley was very cold and boring.

By ben021005 |

This scenic tourist area, centered around Naxi culture and integrated with natural landscapes, is a sacred Dongba site in the central Naxi region. It's full of local flavor, offering wine, Dongba writing, unique wedding rooms, and some unique jewelry. However, it feels catered to tourists and lacks its original quality. While it's worth a visit, if you're short on time, avoid it; it's not worth the trip.

By sunny |

It is a man-made attraction that mainly introduces the living customs of the Dongba people. If you have time, you can learn about it.

By Zhiqin |

Dongba Valley is more than ten kilometers away from Lijiang Ancient Town. It is also a small tourist attraction in Lijiang. It also displays some things about Dongba culture. However, when visiting, it is recommended that you just watch and listen to the explanations. If you participate in activities, you must be mentally prepared, as there is no free lunch.

Dongba Valley offers unique scenery in every season, making it a great place to visit year-round. Dongba is an integral part of Naxi culture, so if you're looking to truly understand it, a visit to Dongba Valley is a must. Admission to Dongba Valley is 30 yuan, and a recommended two-hour visit is recommended. Located near Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, it's recommended to visit Jade Dragon Snow Mountain first thing in the morning. After descending, skip Blue Moon Valley and head straight for Dongba Valley. Blue Moon Valley isn't much of a stop, but a must-see for tour groups. The scenery is disappointing, while Dongba Valley is truly breathtaking.

The Dongba Valley Scenic Area, located at the foot of Yulong Snow Mountain in Yunnan Province, 15 kilometers from Lijiang, is a natural ecological canyon, a rift valley torn apart during ancient mountain building. Entry to the scenic area is on the way to Yulong Snow Mountain and costs 30 yuan. The area features information on Dongba culture and the lives of ethnic minorities such as the Naxi.

By Pea Lixue |

It's a beautiful place like a fairyland, really comfortable.

By Lan Nijia |

Dongba Valley is actually quite small. It displays some ethnic minority dwellings and lifestyles, but it is generally average.

By jolene |

I chose this restaurant that specializes in wild mushroom hotpot. Actually, the taste is good, but because the soup is made with black chicken and wild mushrooms, the taste is relatively strong.

The service is also very good

I still highly recommend his house!

It doesn't mean much, it's just a place to eat, it's so tacky.

By KIM_J_0108 |

It's not bad! I walked around and looked around. The environment is still very clean.

By Turning wood |

It's quite big, there are many ethnic minorities. What impressed me most was that there was an old man in a room who could write Dongba characters to bless tourists. At that time, I received a blessing: "Study hard", haha. I think it's okay to go. Although it may not be authentic, it's okay.

I wasn't expecting this place, but the ancient Tea Horse Road and Tibetan customs in Dongba Valley have a unique style compared to the ancient city of Lijiang.

By stray cat |

It's very unique. People say that the Dongba blessings inside are very accurate. I also joined in the fun. The overall ethnic atmosphere is very strong. I recommend going there.

By Yingying |

Although the weather was nice, it was still a bit cold at the foot of the snow-capped mountains. The scenery was also very beautiful. The people living there were also very simple and honest!

It is a place where you can learn about Dongba culture. It has strong ethnic characteristics, but unfortunately it is heavily commercialized.

By spaceman |

There is not much to do, only taking pictures at the foot of the mountain, or riding a horse for pictures. Cost: 30 yuan

By Taotao's dad |

My wife and I went there in March. We originally wanted to go to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, but we accidentally stumbled into Dongba Valley. The transportation was quite convenient. Maybe it was still relatively cold when we went, so there were few tourists and Dongba Valley was not considered the focus of the tour. We just strolled around for an hour. It had a lot of ethnic minority characteristics and there were many Dongba characters. It felt pretty good. I will take my son there in the future and spend more time to take a good look.

By Yueyue Bird Xiaopeng Friends |

It turns out that Dongba Grand Canyon is a sparsely populated open space in the mountains. It is more suitable for taking pictures than going up the mountain where there are many people. After seeing other friends' photos on the mountain, I felt sorry for it and decided to go up the mountain. But the scenery is still beautiful.

By Xiaoxian 2010 |

Dongba Valley is a man-made scenic spot at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. It displays the ancient Dongba culture. I took a lot of pictures of Dongba characters and brought them back.

This place is really uninteresting, full of man-made attractions and a pile of various cultures (such as the twelve zodiac signs + twelve constellations, etc.).

The team usually chooses one of several similar villages or valleys. For first-time visitors, this place is worth a visit. If the weather is good, you can see the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, which is located at the foot of the snow mountain.

Purely a tourist attraction. It's just okay. The air is quite fresh. It has some unique features. Just a visit.

As one of the attractions that promotes Dongba culture, you can experience the history and civilization of the Naxi people. It is highly recommended.

By Little Girls Big Travel |

It is a scenic tourist area with Naxi culture as its core and integrated with natural landscape. It is the Dongba holy land of the central region of the Naxi people.

By Feng Yang |

Dongba Valley: It is a bit like the China Nationalities Park in Beijing. There are several different areas built in it, which are divided into Naxi, Mosuo, etc. according to the different regions. They are used to show the ups and downs and customs of different regions in Yunnan. There will be some performances in the middle. It feels like a purely man-made attraction. Many of the customs performed in it are also very commercial.

By CMY |

This place has local characteristics. You can drink and see a lot of Dongba characters. There are special wedding rooms and some special accessories. But I think it caters to the needs of tourists and is not original.

By dimples |

Dongba Valley, where you can learn about the cultures of several ethnic minorities and try some local homemade snacks, which cost from one to several yuan each.

By Ő౪Ő |

The Badong culture is very strong. To be honest, I really don’t understand the gods of ethnic minorities. I think they are the same as ghosts.

By Back to the back |

It was around 7am when we arrived at Dongba Valley. The wind was so cold that I was freezing. The ethnic characteristics were particularly prominent, and the most memorable thing was the knife-climbing experience. It was terrifying.

By 4WDream |

Apart from tour groups, basically no one goes there, and since it is difficult to make a profit, the facilities are not well maintained. You can go and have a look if you are really bored.

By PO |

The ticket price for Dongba Valley seems to be 30 yuan. Those who are interested can go in and experience the Dongba culture. If you have not paid the ancient city maintenance fee, you will have to pay 80 yuan.

By shelter66 |

It's just a mountain valley, nothing special, I think it's a scam

By Meitian |

The natural scenery is very beautiful, but the locals are too commercial. Don't take pictures of the locals casually, or they will ask you for money.

By Supreme Inaction |

It's hard to imagine that the Dongba Valley actually housed an almost complete civilization! Their history alone, especially their writing system, is enough to be proud of.

You can experience the unique ethnic customs, but it's best to avoid having a lama tell your fortune or hang a lucky charm.

By Black Eyed Peas |

It was a place full of fun, with everyone looking at different folk customs with great curiosity. Even if they got up early in the morning, they still had no temper.

By Snore |

Watching the Dongba performance is very ethnic. Tourists can take photos with the old Dongba at the door, but unfortunately I didn’t take a photo.

Women work outside, while men stay home to read or work on their crafts. As a result, exquisite handicrafts can be found everywhere in Dongba Valley. These handicrafts are worth buying.

By Binkky |

The scenery here is ordinary, but fortunately the totem culture has been preserved. What attracts people is the story, and the scenery is far from that of Xinjiang.

By Tian Daxia |

Dongba culture has a long history, so if you are interested in Lijiang's local culture, you must go there.

By Girls flat shoes. |
