The words "World Cultural Heritage Naxi Ancient Kingdom Capital - Baisha" can still be clearly seen on the door plaque of the archway, and through the doorplate, you can see the snow-capped mountains in the distance. One south and one north, the doorplate forms a small separation. As you move northwards towards the snow-capped mountains, you will find some unique shops selling exquisite handmade accessories and ethnic costumes, which are novel and interesting. To the south, there are rows of Naxi houses, neat and orderly, yet peaceful.

The ancient town of Baisha in the early morning seems to be soaked in dew, and the shops that are closed to customers are like entering a large self-service shopping mall with a dazzling array of goods.

It is said that Baisha still has more than 80% of its inhabitants, which is rare in most ancient towns in Lijiang. Every household has its doors open, so you don’t have to look through the cracks to see. You can directly feel the natural and simple Naxi folk customs when walking in the town.

I know that there are three famous ancient towns in Lijiang. Baisha Ancient Town is the farthest one and is very popular. There is a special bus line at the east gate of the ancient town, and the fare is 5 yuan. It passes through Shuhe Ancient Town on the way. Baisha Ancient Town is a well-preserved traditional settlement of the Naxi people. It has a history of more than 800 years. The ancient town radiates five main lanes with Sifang Street as the center. It retains the Naxi residential building complex with three squares and one screen wall, four courtyards and five patios. There are more than 30 Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings. The Qinglong River formed by the meltwater of Yulong Snow Mountain passes through the town. There are tie-dye workshops, Dongba papermaking workshops and other intangible cultural heritage workshops on the riverside. Find a local restaurant or tavern to sit, and the local shopkeeper will carefully describe the various Naxi characters on the wall of Baisha to you, and you can deeply feel the atmosphere of a nation.

The most popular ancient town in Lijiang is Dayan, followed by Shuhe. Here I would like to recommend Baisha, a more niche ancient town, where you can experience the real life of Naxi residents. It is quieter and more remote than Dayan and Shuhe. Although it is small, it has everything you need. It has the flavor of an ancient town, and you can see the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain when you look up.

Baisha Ancient Town was once the political, economic and cultural center of Lijiang, and was also the original settlement of the Naxi people in Lijiang Basin. It costs more than 30 yuan to take a taxi to Lijiang Ancient Town, or there is a No. 6 bus that goes directly there, with a fare of 1 yuan.

The ancient town retains its original appearance and has not been overdeveloped. You can come to the street shops in Baisha to sit and drink tea, or stroll around slowly. In Baisha, you can truly restore the lives of local people. Many local people live their original lives and have not been affected by the wave of commercialization.

Baisha is named after the white gravel on the surface; there is also a saying that it is named after the homophony of "collapse stone" in Naxi language. It is truly a small village under the snow-capped mountains, as if you can reach out and touch the snow on the top of the mountain. Baisha Ancient Town is the birthplace of the Mu family chieftain family and the earliest settlement of the Naxi people entering the Lijiang Basin. Because it has not been overdeveloped, the houses in Baisha Ancient Town are still full of Naxi heritage, and the rustic flavor can be felt as soon as you step in. However, the most famous and eye-catching thing in Baisha Ancient Town should be tie-dyeing. Almost every household sells tie-dyed cloth, which is hung in front of the door to form the most beautiful scenery in Baisha. It is impossible to know whether each piece of cloth is dyed by the boss himself, but if you look closely, you can see that each piece is unique and there is no duplication. No wonder it is also expensive. Even though I don't understand art, I will find tie-dyeing beautiful if I appreciate it carefully. In addition to the precious tie-dyeing left by our ancestors, the quaint paths and old houses full of historical flavor in Baisha are actually all treasures left to us by our ancestors. It's even more interesting to take pictures of the small commodities in the ancient town. The small gadgets in Baisha seem to be old, but they are very justified in being old. Because the food in Baisha Ancient Town is completely inversely proportional to the number of tourists, which makes the restaurants unable to cope, we simply tried the chickpea jelly that is everywhere on the street as lunch. The chickpea jelly sauce in the ancient town is a bit sour and tastes a little strange.

Here you can see the shadow of Dayan Ancient Town in the 1980s. Because of tourism, Dayan and Shuhe have become commercialized. When I came to Shuhe in 2006, it was the current Baisha Ancient Town, very primitive and simple.

Baisha Ancient Town is not big, and we basically walked around it in more than two hours. It is still very quaint. Even on the main street, there are vegetable and meat stalls and convenience stores serving the locals. There are also Naxi grandmothers selling vegetables and fruits under the city gate.

The embroidery, homespun cloth and thangka here are worth noting.

You should visit Baisha Ancient Town at noon or in the afternoon when there are fewer people, making it a good time to take photos of local houses and Naxi elders.

The guide says there are many foreigners here. As expected, there are foreigners everywhere. The commercial atmosphere of Baisha Ancient Town is also weaker, which is also quite interesting. Because Baisha Ancient Town is relatively small, we finished the whole tour in about 40 minutes after dinner.

Just strolling around the town, the town without too much business further highlights the original flavor of Naxi.

Things in Baisha are very cheap, and they are all at the consumption level of local people. After lunch, I went to the home of the inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage to taste Yunnan black tea and learn the interesting Dongba script. It was a pleasant trip, but the government still needs to publicize and improve the environmental awareness of local people. The clear stream is full of domestic garbage, and the street environment is also very worrying. It is much worse than Shuhe and Dayan. As a tourist, I feel that this is a regret from the heart. I hope that Baisha can be clean.

Two or three years ago, Baisha Ancient Town was still a dilapidated town with few people.

Today, the buildings here are still the same, except that there are more shops. It has finally started to develop like the old Lijiang Town. Baisha Ancient Town is located about ten miles north of the old Lijiang Town. It is also the birthplace of the Mu family, so here you can better trace the original Lijiang.

The taste here is better than that in Lijiang Old Town, and the price is much lower, so the cost performance is very high. Many tourists who come to Lijiang Ancient Town visit Dayan Ancient Town. But for those who like quietness and primitiveness, Baisha Ancient Town is the best choice. Why Dayan is no longer the Dayan of the past? It is because there are more tourists, commercial things have emerged, and the local residents have withdrawn, which has become what it is today. Baisha Ancient Town is original and undisturbed, and is the most ancient town with Naxi heritage. Out of interest in Lijiang Dongba culture, and out of wanting to contact more original Naxi ancient villages and more authentic Naxi people, I came to Baisha from Dayan. The ancient town is located at the foot of Yulong Snow Mountain. Looking up anywhere in the ancient town, you can see the cold face of Yulong Snow Mountain. For the overly popular Dayan Ancient Town, Baisha is an extremely quiet corner. There is no hustle and bustle, no extravagance, and walking into Baisha Ancient Town will give people a sense of quiet power. This place has not been developed, and everything is intact to maintain the simplicity and tranquility that a Naxi ancient town should have. The old people were sitting on the roadside, chatting and selling vegetables. They were not so serious about selling vegetables, as if they were just going through the motions, because they relied on their children for basic food and clothing. The town has little contact with the outside world and still maintains a lifestyle of farming, weaving and dyeing. The living conditions are more leisurely than Dayan. Tie-dyed fabrics can be seen drying outside everywhere. The tie-dyeing process is a unique folk dyeing and drying method. Since many families make a living from this, it constitutes the most beautiful scenery of Baisha Ancient Town. The tie-dye workshop here also has experience activities, which allows you to tie-dye a small piece of cloth into shape in a short time, but I went there a little late, and after the best drying time, I could only tie-dye with the dyed cloth.

Don't ask me why I give it five stars! I always come to this ancient town! I like the undeveloped appearance of Baisha! There are more foreign tourists here than Chinese! This is also the best ancient town for the preservation of Naxi culture. It is the only ancient town around Lijiang that is not commercialized. It is also the only way to Wenhai and Yulong Snow Mountain! Including Stone City, Blue Moon Valley, etc.!
