Lijiang Tiger Leaping Gorge

丽江虎跳峡

The Tiger Leaping Gorge Scenic Area in Lijiang is a 2-kilometer-long sightseeing plank road on the upper Tiger Leaping Gorge cliff, suitable for family outings.
There are two viewing platforms in the scenic area, where you can watch the river water hitting the Tiger Leaping Rock in the middle of the river, which is magnificent.
Unlike the wild and interesting Tiger Leaping Gorge in Shangri-La, the facilities here are complete, the plank road is smooth, and the play is easy and convenient.
If you are really exhausted, you can take a rickshaw in the scenic area. Each rickshaw can carry 2 people and costs about 60 yuan.

Tiger Leaping Gorge, located southeast of Shangri-La (Zhongdian), is the largest canyon on the Yangtze River and a world-renowned grand canyon. It is divided into three sections: Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge, and Lower Tiger Leaping Gorge. Here, the Yangtze River is held between the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and the Haba Snow Mountain, with a height difference of over 3,900 meters. The canyon is one of the deepest in the world, and like a tiger descending from the mountains, a simple lift of the feet on the reefs in the river could allow it to soar across, hence the name Tiger Leaping Gorge.

By Heart on the journey |

Tiger Leaping Gorge, renowned for its danger, is one of China's deepest canyons. Shangri-La's Tiger Leaping Gorge is a national AAAA-level scenic area, encompassing Upper, Middle, and Lower Tiger Leaping Gorges, as well as a high-road hiking trail. Nowadays, Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge is generally the most popular destination. Middle and Lower Tiger Leaping Gorge offer even better scenery, with more majestic and precipitous peaks. However, the journey is also more difficult. Last year, I would have at least made it to Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge. This year, for some reason, perhaps because my wife was a bit of a hindrance, I simply didn't have that burning desire to conquer it. Never mind, I'm already sixty years old, so why bother trying? It's just a trait of old age. My self-driving tour of Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan from Beijing took two months, and I was quite satisfied.

Lijiang's Tiger Leaping Gorge, a masterpiece of nature's uncanny handicraft, astounds with its majestic canyon scenery. Sheer cliffs jut out from the canyon, and the roaring Jinsha River churns through it, creating breathtaking rapids. Walking along the plank path, with the abyss beneath your feet and the deafening roar of the waves beside you, you'll feel both awe and exhilaration. This is a mecca for hiking enthusiasts, where every step is filled with challenges and surprises. Tiger Leaping Gorge is not only a natural wonder, but also a spiritual revelation, allowing one to deeply appreciate the grandeur of life and the majesty of nature.

Tiger Leaping Gorge, located at the border of Lijiang and Shangri-La in Yunnan Province, stretches between the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and the Haba Snow Mountain. The gorge stretches 23 kilometers. Tightly bounded by the mountains on both sides, the river flows into the gorge, only about 50 meters wide. At its narrowest point, tigers and leopards can easily leap over it, hence the name Tiger Leaping Gorge. With a vertical drop of over 3,900 meters, the gorge is known as one of the deepest canyons in the world. On weekdays, the surging waves are awe-inspiring, and during the rainy season, the spectacle surpasses even the Hukou Waterfall on the Yellow River. It is renowned for its breathtaking beauty, uniqueness, and danger. Along with the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon in Tibet and the Grand Canyon in the United States, it ranks as the fourth largest canyon in the world, the second largest in China, and the largest canyon on the Yangtze River.

Tiger Leaping Gorge is divided into Shangri-La and Lijiang, just like the Yellow River waterfalls are divided into Shaanxi and Shanxi. The Jinsha River passes through Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain, with Shangri-La on one side and Lijiang on the other.

After reading the elementary school text, I wanted to go and see the scenery. I finally saw it and was amazed.

After riding a bicycle through Tiger Leaping Gorge, what I really wanted to do most was to hike in Tiger Leaping Gorge.

By Lu Fei |

Experience the surging river up close. Compared with the Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, the Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge is less crowded, has not been formally developed, and requires hiking to enter.

By Lijiang_Aliang |

One of the three largest canyons in the world, the sound can be heard for miles, and the crashing waves are very spectacular.

By Andy.Bohu.Tang |

This is still a bit far from the Tiger Leaping Gorge Scenic Area in Lijiang

It is recommended to take a day trip so that it is more convenient.

By Zhang Ying |

It is magnificent and spectacular. Don't go to undeveloped scenic areas.

By yaya |

The scenery is super beautiful. I feel that the amount of water is not as large as that of Tiger Leaping. There are many landslides on the way there, and the road conditions are bad. It is strongly not recommended to drive there

By hi Xunxun |

If you want to appreciate the beauty of Tiger Leaping Gorge, you have to pay a price. The road down to the bottom of the valley is difficult to walk on because the mountain road is too rough.

But once I got there, I found myself reluctant to leave. In the shade, I leaned against the rock wall, listening to the rushing river. The wind dried my sweat and I felt comfortable.

You don’t have to go back the same way and can save a lot of time by climbing the ladder, but it is really tiring after climbing 168 steps.

Climbing a 3-stage ladder with 168 steps was a real challenge for me. Once you've climbed a vertical ladder, you have to keep going up, step by step, without looking back. No matter how scared you are, you have to encourage yourself until you finally complete the climb. (I had to suppress my fear the whole time.)

By Bathed in rain and wind |

The magnificence of this place is beyond words. Descending slowly from the plank road, you can walk to the river's edge and experience the roaring water up close. The tiger is the iconic landmark of Tiger Leaping Gorge. Our Tibetan guide recounted a story about a hunter who once chased a tiger here, only for the tiger to leap over and the hunter to fall. Watching the roaring river up close is truly awe-inspiring, like a giant yellow dragon roaring past. The mere proximity makes you dizzy. It's rainy season, so the water is high, making the scene even more spectacular. A visit to Tiger Leaping Gorge is highly recommended.

By Zhuge Jin |

The scenery in the rainy season is still good, but the main scenery should be in the Lower Tiger Leaping or Middle Tiger Leaping

By Big Hae Walking |

The water in Tiger Leaping Gorge can really be described as breathtaking.

By Living in the same place |

In 2015, I signed up online for an outdoor tour (Yangtze River First Bend, Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge). The Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge was quite fun, certainly quite thrilling, but the scenery was also stunning. The cliffs were surrounded by a few wires, but in some places, they were completely gone. During the rainy season, we rarely visited the reefs near the river. When we went, we heard someone had been swept down by a wave the day before. Overall, the hike was thrilling but not dangerous. The entire hike is quite demanding. If you're planning on climbing the "Sky Ladder" (or "Sky Ladder"), women shouldn't wear skirts; the ladder is almost vertical at a 90-degree angle. You can imagine the consequences of wearing a skirt. Regarding fees, I remember paying the tour fee in 2015 and spending nothing else. On the way back, we stopped at a jade shop, but there was no mandatory purchase. Now, I hear there's even a fee for climbing the "Sky Ladder"...

By Cotton is warm |

The road to Zhonghutiao was privately built, and a 10 yuan per person road fee was charged. Because I hadn't done any research beforehand, I let the driver drive to any Zhonghutiao intersection.

We began our descent down the Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge. At first, the stone path was fine, not very steep. But soon, the path became increasingly steep.

My friend in his seventies walked down step by step, bent over.

At this moment, as someone said: our eyes are in heaven, but our bodies are in hell.

We arrived at a small shop. We sat down to rest and chatted with the owner. He learned that the fruits and vegetables in the shop were all picked from his home not far away. He traveled up and down the mountain, going out early and returning late, just to make a little money. It was really hard! So I bought him an orange he grew himself for 5 yuan. He was delighted and even took a photo for us. Mountain people are very simple and honest, and they are very satisfied and happy to earn a little money!

I asked the mountain man and he said we were only halfway there.

We decided not to go down any further, firstly because time was tight and secondly because we were exhausted and we had to climb back up to the highway to get back to Lijiang. We rested for a while and then started to climb up.

By chillfairy |

We went down from this entrance. There was a woman with a child guarding the intersection. Because it was a small road built by the villagers themselves, a toll of 15 RMB per person was charged. It was expensive. I did the math and found that only dozens of people went down during the off-season, and the income was several thousand yuan a day. It was even more unbelievable during the peak season.

I watched the Tiger Leap from a distance, but it still didn't look very impressive from above. But the people on the reef looked very small.

We decided to keep going forward. The road was very dangerous because it was very narrow and there was water and falling rocks. I reminded myself to stay focused and not relax.

Occasionally there is a short section of this kind of ladder, which is built by the villagers themselves. Because it is narrow, it is still quite scary for people who are afraid of heights.

When passing through the cave, the gravel is slippery, so you must be very focused!

When you are almost at the viewing platform, you will need to pay a toll of 15 yuan per person because this is a road opened by other villagers. There is a woman guarding the gate and will give you a receipt after collecting the money.

The ladder is about a third of the way up and looks truly terrifying, so those with acrophobia and heart problems are advised not to go! However, you can choose not to take the ladder, as we did; the plank path isn't very long anyway. One thing to note is that you shouldn't believe the elderly people at each rest stop who tell you this is the last supply point and you should buy some water and fruit, saying it's still a long way up. These words are meant to wear you down. Just keep going, no matter how tiring the climb may be. It's actually quite quick; the average young person (like us) can reach the top in about an hour.

Day 3-4 Tiger Leaping Gorge High Road Hiking

Qiaotou—(2 hours)—Naxi Yage—(1.5 hours)—28 Turns—(1.5 hours)—Tea Horse Inn

Tea Horse Inn - (2 hours) - Halfway Inn - (1.2 hours) - Longdong Waterfall - (1 hour) - Tina's Hostel (lunch) - (0.5 hours) - Middle Tiger Leaping Rock - Ladder to Heaven - Ladder to Heaven Inn

Take a break from your usual slow pace and embark on a truly exhilarating Tiger Leaping Gorge hike, traversing the high mountains. Look down at the surging river at the valley floor and gaze up at the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Overnight, stay at the distinctive alpine inn, the Tea Horse Inn, nestled in the mountains, listening to the sound of the water as you sleep. Snow-capped mountains, canyons, pristine forests, waterfalls, streams, and villages dotted through this mid-air landscape are a truly refreshing experience.

The most interesting thing about this hiking route is that the owners of the Naxi inns along the way all speak English. There are more foreigners than Chinese, and it feels very international.

By China-TravelNote users |

There is a man-made red stone tiger standing there, and the water is quite big.

By Mr Yang |

The road to Zhonghutiao is steeper. On the way, we saw the wreckage of a van deep under the cliff. The road runs along the mountain, and in many sections, only half of the road is passable.

The driver stopped here specifically to let us take a photo. The mountain in the distance looks like a tiger.

There is a simple parking lot in the Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge. We bought some instant noodles there and had a quick meal. Then we needed to hike down to the Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge. The driver gave us an hour and a half for the return trip. Together with the other two couples in the car, we were ready to go down the mountain.

The road down the mountain was not officially developed. The road is quite steep and there are tolls. It is said that this road is called Teacher Zhang's Trail. The Internet says it is 10 yuan per person, but when we went there the toll was 15 yuan per person. Everyone had to pay before going down, which was a bit like highway robbery. The key point is that it is said that this road was not built by Teacher Zhang.

The road was very steep, and there was a rest house a short distance down. There was no one around, except for a place selling water and cucumbers. There were also various charges, including 1 yuan for using the restroom and 5 yuan for crossing the bridge. It felt like there were many 1 yuan toilets in Yunnan; in all my years in Jiangsu, I'd never encountered a place charging for toilet use.

Climbing up the Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge is much more tiring than climbing up the Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, especially since you have to go up again after going down, which is even more tiring.

Lijiang, Zhonghutiao, has not been developed yet.

However, I went there, paid the toll to the fellow villagers, paid the fee for climbing the ladder, and then hiked down to the bottom of the canyon.

We drove from Lijiang by bus to Tiger Leaping Gorge, known as the "First Gorge of the Yangtze River." The sight was truly breathtaking! We'll never forget the unconventional hike we took.

By Ryan li |

You can take a bus from Lijiang or Shangri-La (Zhongdian) to Tiger Leaping Gorge Town (Qiaotou) or Daju. Tiger Leaping Gorge is accessible from either direction. The scenery on either side of the gorge is distinct, and I personally find the view from Shangri-La to be more impressive. You can also hike, which is quite thrilling, similar to the Ladder to Heaven.

By Industrial Tourism |

Tiger Leaping Gorge is located in the southeast of Zhongdian, 105 kilometers from Zhongdian County and 35 kilometers from the first bend of the Yangtze River. It is divided into three sections: Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge and Lower Tiger Leaping Gorge, with a total of 18 sections.

The narrowest part of the river is only 30 meters wide. The river is held between the two snow-capped mountains of Yulong and Haba. The altitude difference is more than 3,900 meters. The canyon is the deepest in the world.

Tiger Leaping Gorge is a world-renowned canyon, renowned for its precipitous beauty and grandeur. From Tiger Leaping Gorge Town, you can enter the canyon by following the river down the Chongjiang River Cave at the foot of Haba Snow Mountain. Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, 9 kilometers from Tiger Leaping Gorge Town, is the narrowest section of the canyon, measuring just over 10 meters wide. Right in the center of the river stands a 13-meter-high rock, the Tiger Leaping Rock. The rock rises like a solitary peak, towering above the surrounding area. The collision of the river and the rock creates a roaring, majestic scene.

By Zhang Paopao hehe |

Let me tell you about a one-day itinerary that covers Upper Tiger Leaping Leaping and Middle Tiger Leaping Leaping, and then returns to Lijiang (you can also go to Shangri-La on the return trip) without joining a tour group.

In the morning, take the 8:30 am bus from Lijiang Bus Station to Tiger Leaping Gorge. Once you arrive at Tiger Leaping Gorge Town, a ticket seller will board the bus to sell you tickets. The price is 65 yuan per person. Do not get off the bus. The driver will then offer to take you into the scenic area on a private basis, similar to a chartered bus. Those who prefer not to hike or want to get off at the Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge scenic area. Arrive at Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge before 11:00 am and stay for an hour to take photos and rest.

Meet at 12:00 PM for Zhonghutiao. Upon arrival, the driver will sell you a ticket back to Lijiang for the afternoon for 70 RMB (including commuting within the scenic area and the return trip to the Lijiang Bus Station). The route down to the valley floor via Zhang Laoshi Plank Road is 15 RMB, a round-trip journey of two and a half hours. If you're energetic enough to climb the ladder, give the person at the next checkpoint 15 RMB. If you'd like to walk along the narrow path to the sky, you'll need to pay another 15 RMB. The tolls for each of the three sections are determined by your preference. Afterward, leave your driver's phone number at both locations for a scheduled pick-up time.

We gathered at 3:30 pm to depart for Lijiang. If you want to go to Shangri-La, you can take the bus back to the ticket office and get off, then catch a bus to Shangri-La in the town.

Overall it is very convenient, the key is that you don't need to transfer. Don't join a tour group, most groups don't go to Zhonghutiao! I went shopping an hour after arriving at the scenic spot.

By Pompom and Yingying |

Tiger Leaping Gorge is a must-see. It's spectacular, but a little difficult to walk to. The road up and down is very steep.

By Michelle |

Tiger Leaping Gorge is a world-famous canyon, known for its ruggedness and grandeur.

By Hua Hongtai |

Tiger Leaping Gorge is still spectacular. However, the scenic area is the Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge. The Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge is not a state-developed scenic area. There are three paths built by villagers leading down there, each with a fee, and there's another fee to reach the observation deck. The cost of a full circuit is about the same as the Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge. As for the scenery on the internationally renowned Tiger Leaping Gorge "High Road" hike, I can only laugh. There's basically nothing to see, and the trail is terrible.

By Tangtang Rice |

Hiking Tiger Leaping Gorge is still very challenging...

By jinraaa |

We went to Zhonghutiao in Shangri-La, which is located between Walnut Garden Village and Bendiwan Village in Tiger Leaping Gorge Town, Shangri-La, and sandwiched between Yulong Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain. It is the second deepest canyon in China (3,800 meters drop), second only to the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon (5,300 meters drop).

The path along the way is very narrow, and next to it is a precipitous abyss. This is a photo I took from the car. If you're traveling by car, it's best to avoid this attraction. We chose it mainly because it included a two-hour hike. It's not suitable for the elderly or very young children, as the hike is difficult.

Because Zhonghutiao is undeveloped, it has been maintained by local villages.

Zhonghutiao is a world-famous couple's hiking route, lasting approximately two hours. The typical starting point is at Zhang Laoshi's Inn, where the fee is 15 yuan, and 10 yuan for groups. After reaching the bottom of the valley, you can either retrace your steps or climb the Brave Ladder in Bendiwan Village, paying 10 yuan, back to the Zhang Laoshi's Inn parking lot.

I went to Tiger Leaping Gorge when I first went to Lijiang 10 years ago. I didn’t go there again when I went to Lijiang later. I felt it was still a bit dangerous.

By Xing |

Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the deepest canyons in China. The canyon is 16 kilometers long. The main peak of Yulong Snow Mountain on the south bank is 5,596 meters above sea level, and the Zhongdian Snow Mountain (Haba Snow Mountain) on the north bank is 5,396 meters above sea level. The river in the middle is only 30 to 60 meters wide. The upper gorge of Tiger Leaping Gorge is 1,800 meters above sea level, and the lower gorge is 1,630 meters above sea level. The difference between the mountains and the river on both sides is 2,500 to 3,000 meters. The valley slopes are steep and spectacular. The river falls continuously over 7 steep slopes in the gorge, with a drop of 170 meters. The water is turbulent and the sound can be heard for miles. It is one of the deepest canyons in the world. In the old days, the river was cut off by a landslide, and there are still landslide deposits left.

The Tiger Leaping Gorge hike is one of the best in China. My personal experience after the hike can be summed up in one sentence: "Beautiful scenery, no dangers, and you'll meet many fellow hikers along the way, who are generally quite fit."

Finally, I would like to say that the Tiger Leaping Gorge hike is worth it. Two days is enough. Take your friends or loved ones to go there. The scenery you see is the most beautiful.

Opening hours: 09:00-18:00

Tiger Leaping Gorge, the Yangtze River's largest canyon, stretches between Haba Mountain and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Its name comes from the legend of a tiger leaping across the river from a rock in the heart of the river. With roaring water and rocks at a height of 3,900 meters and a dramatic 216-meter drop, the gorge is renowned for its high mountains, deep valleys, and majestic, precipitous terrain.

I've been there twice, it's spectacular. Shangri-La is right across the street, and those who can't walk can take a sedan chair, which is very comfortable. The first few pictures were taken when I went there in 2012, and the last few pictures were taken when I went there in 2006.

The silt-laden river water roared against the rough rocks, creating a ferocious, jarring sound. On our way back, I turned and saw a puddle of crystal-clear blue water at the foot of the mountain. My companion couldn't help but exclaim, "Just a few meters away, and yet there's such a completely different scenery!"

The scenery was stunning, the sound of the water rumbling, but I was really stumped by the steps. The sun was so bright that I couldn't see the steps clearly and I didn't dare to walk up /(ㄒoㄒ)/~~

Tiger Leaping Gorge: The river falls over seven steep slopes in the gorge, with a drop of 170 meters. The water is so turbulent that the sound can be heard for miles. It is one of the deepest canyons in the world.

We had a good day trip to Lashi Lake, so I thought I’d check Meituan to see if there were any trips to Tiger Leaping Gorge.

Tiger Leaping Gorge is divided into three gorges: upper, middle and lower. Many people basically take a two-day tour of Tiger Leaping Gorge and Shangri-La. Many people go to this route.

Our plan is to go to Dali after Lijiang and then go to Xishuangbanna, not Shangri-La.

I searched for a long time but couldn't find anything, so I called the uncle who was on the Lashi Lake day trip today.

After a long discussion, they said they also wanted to develop this line, but the Lashi Lake antenna had just started to take shape and they had not had time to start it yet.

In addition, there are not so many people going to Tiger Leaping Gorge during the rainy season, and most people take a two-day tour of Tiger Leaping Gorge and Shangri-La.

Finally reached an agreement--- 180 yuan per person for round trip including tickets, and they would take us directly to the station when we came back.

They came to pick us up at 7 o'clock the next morning, and we ran out without eating.

It was still a little dark, so we loaded our luggage and got on the bus.

After a while, the driver stopped the car. It turned out that we had not eaten breakfast.

The kind Naxi uncle also reminded us that Tiger Leaping Gorge is a mountain road and we should bring more food.

The road was very difficult to travel, either winding mountain roads or farm dirt roads, bumpy and we were half asleep and half awake in the car.

We arrived at Tiger Leaping Gorge at around 9 o'clock and bought our own tickets. The full ticket was 50 yuan and the student ticket was half price, 25 yuan.

The Tiger Leaping Gorge tour begins. After passing the ticket gate, there is a winding mountain road with high mountains on both sides and a river in the middle. We are on one side of the mountain.

Indeed, there were steep rocks all around us, and the sign told us to stay as close to the side of the rocks as possible to prevent mud and rocks from sliding and hitting tourists.

After walking about 500 meters, I saw the real foot of the mountain.

I'm not sure how long this mountain road is. According to the driver, it should be very long, more than 2 hours round trip.

The cart pullers line up here waiting to pull tourists up the mountain.

The one-way trip costs 60 yuan per car. In order to save energy, we chose to take the car up.

In less than half an hour, I finally saw the spectacular scenery. The water coming down from the waterfall was white.

It is raining, the trees are greener and the branches and leaves are greener

There are not many tourists here. We are under the jurisdiction of Lijiang.

The opposite side belongs to Shangri-La, and there are quite a lot of people, many of whom are participating in the two-day tour of Shangri-La

Walk through the stairs to the end and see the Tiger Leaping Gorge that looks like a tiger.

The fierce beating of the rocks was quite spectacular. As the road was built on the mountain, some sections were impassable due to sliding rocks, so it was necessary to pass through the tunnel in the mountain.

I didn't understand it at the time, but later I figured out what Upper Tiger Leaping and Lower Tiger Leaping were, they were located at different points on the mountain.

Lower Tiger Leaping is at the bottom of the mountain, while Upper Tiger Leaping is located slightly higher up the mountain.

When I was making a guide, I saw someone say that the mountain road to Tiger Leaping is quite steep and relatively difficult to walk.
