Yubeng Glacial Lake

Yubeng Village is located in Yunling Township, Deqin County, at the eastern foot of Meili Snow Mountain in Yunnan. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, it has a unique geographical environment. There are only more than 20 households in the village, with an altitude of 3,000 meters. It is connected to the outside world only by a post road. Because there is no road access at present, there are two post roads to enter Yubeng, one in the direction of Xidang and the other in the direction of Ninong. The Xidang post road is more convenient. You need to walk or ride a mule, uphill for 12 kilometers, downhill for 6 kilometers, and cross the 3,700-meter pass. In addition, Yubeng Village is located at the foot of Wuzi Peak under the Niancimu Peak of Meili Snow Mountain. It has beautiful scenery and simple folk customs. Therefore, some people say that this is the "paradise" written by Tao Yuanming; Due to the abundant rainfall and special geographical environment and climatic conditions, the ecological growth of plants in Yubeng Village is dense and strange. Many other plants can often be seen parasitizing on the trunks of some old trees. This peculiar phenomenon is called "five trees with the same root".

How to get to Yubeng Village: Yubeng Village is located in the hinterland of Meili Snow Mountain. It is geographically remote, so it has preserved a good original ecological natural landscape. However, it is difficult to get to Yubeng Village. From all over the country, you need to go to Shangri-La first, then transfer to Feilai Temple in Deqin County, and then charter a car to Xidang from Feilai Temple to start hiking into Yubeng Village.

Yubeng Glacier Lake is about 3,800 meters above sea level and is about an hour's drive from the base camp. It is a deep green lake formed by the melted snow from the glaciers of Meili Snow Mountain and is known as the Holy Lake of Meili Snow Mountain.

We went upstream along the stream beside the camp, and after climbing over a large rock with a waterfall, a small alpine ice lake appeared in front of us. It was as green as emerald, holy and peaceful, and we couldn't help but exclaim in admiration! The ice lake is a typical ice-stained lake, formed by the erosion of the surface by glacial movement. On one side of the ice lake is the mountain ridge where we are, and on the other side is a vertical rock wall and a glacier that is almost suspended in the air. The dark blue glacier and the emerald green lake water complement each other. Climbing up from the rock wall, you can reach the main peak of Kawagebog. The mountaineering team climbed up from the rock wall on one side of the ice lake. The guide pointed to a position above the rock wall that we couldn't see and said that the mountaineering team was killed there. Huge glaciers and snow will continue to fall from the cliffs into the ice lake, thus continuously replenishing the lake water; other glaciers spread to the edge of the lake, which is very spectacular. We sat quietly by the ice lake, looking up at the blue sky, snow-capped mountains and glaciers, and drinking a sip of pure lake water when thirsty. The idea of ​​staying here forever slowly grew from the bottom of my heart.

I went to the ice lake on Chinese Valentine's Day, "Qixi Festival". The feeling was unforgettable and will be remembered forever.

The Ice Lake is the most difficult part of the hike as the road is long and the snow is deep, making it difficult to walk. Therefore, those who have not adapted to the plateau on the first day can go to the Shenpu first and then to the Ice Lake.

Because it is the off-season, no store is open throughout the trip, so friends who choose to travel in the off-season should bring their own supplies. Anyway, I managed to survive several days of hiking with a thermos cup of hot water and half a Snickers bar (I hate Snickers, it's not delicious). My idea is to only replenish basic energy and not eat snacks.

When we arrived at the ice lake, it had turned into an ice and snow lake and was impossible to get close to. Everyone was so tired that they lay down in the snow.

Although I wanted to go down and get close to the icy lake, my equipment was limited. Only my companion relied on his rain boots and cycling clothes to step out a snowy road. He was also the only one who came into contact with the icy lake. I don't recommend you to go down here. It is still very dangerous. Safety is the first priority when you go out.

The route to Binghu has the most abundant scenery, with flowing water, wooden bridges, pastures, and most importantly, clear lake water at the end. However, it should be said that Binghu is only the most scenic route among the currently planned and developed routes. Moreover, this route has a supply station at the pasture, and the altitude is relatively low, so it won't be too tiring. Compared with Shenhu, Binghu lacks the magnificent snow-capped mountains in front of it, and the visual impact is a little worse.

As we rode, the sky cleared up! The moment the huge snow-capped mountains appeared before me, I was moved to tears.

Too huge. Too majestic. Too bright. Like a lake of mithril, flowing over a vast mountain range.

The moment the clouds and fog cleared, I was shocked by the power of Meili Snow Mountain.

The following pictures are photos sent back by my friends who hiked to the ice lake. The scenery along the way is similar to that of the Shen Waterfall, with forests, and then walking to the foot of the snow-capped mountains. The last scene is a clear lake. However, the road is very difficult to walk. It is also more than five kilometers like the Shen Waterfall, but the round trip time is twice as long. It was drizzling today, and it was muddy.

The round trip time is generally 8-10 hours, with two passes, a rise of 700 meters, and a distance of 5.8 kilometers. The first 1.7 kilometers are almost flat, and then climb to Xiaonong Pass. After passing the pass, go downhill all the way to Xiaonong Ranch, and then walk another 0.6 kilometers on flat road and climb 300 meters to the ice lake.

The ice lake is at a high altitude. It was raining again, so it was difficult to walk through the primitive forest. We passed the base camp and rested for a while before setting off again. The whole round trip took a total of 7 hours. The scenery was very nice.

Ice Lake is the "holy lake" of Meili Snow Mountain. It is formed by the meltwater from the snowy mountains. The lake water is extremely cold and dark green, like emerald. The glaciers spread to the lakeside, and in winter it becomes an icy world. Standing on the hillside next to the ice lake, the emerald green lake reflects the blue sky and white clouds, surrounded by continuous white snow peaks. Starting from the base camp, it takes about an hour to climb up along the narrow and steep path to reach the ice lake. Since the ice lake is formed by glacial meltwater, avalanches often occur here, so do not rashly approach the glacial meltwater of the ice lake.

It is really tiring to go to the ice lake. The road is also very difficult to walk on. There are either big rocks or mud pits, plus the altitude sickness, so it is best to go there on horseback.

When I went there on May Day, the snow in the second half had not melted yet, so the walk was quite difficult. We crossed a pass to reach the ice lake.

I really think the ice lake is beautiful. The 360-degree view of the snow-capped mountains is in full view, and the snow adds a bit of sadness.

Finally, I stood on the top of the mountain. There was no obstacle in front of me. The Heart of Yubeng - Ice Lake was lying quietly in front of me. A voice echoed in my heart, "You will always go to those places, where the snow-capped mountains are white, the lakes are clean, and the whole world is singing love songs to you."

Generally, mules that depart from Yubeng only reach the Xiaonong Base Camp halfway on the way, and the steeper sections behind need to be hiked up by themselves.

The ice lake in the rainy season is still not as beautiful. Local shops recommend October to November as the best season of the year, with clear skies and white clouds. At that time, the ice lake should be a piece of emerald green.

The Ice Lake is not frozen in this season. In fact, the Ice Lake looks different from every angle. The lake will show different colors, and it is even more beautiful from a God's perspective. When going down the mountain from the Ice Lake, there are only three colors in my eyes: blue sky, white clouds, and green summer. The summer of Yubeng is endless green. When the clouds dissipated and the blue appeared from the white clouds, looking at the direction where the glacier melted and flowed, I knew that I was healed by nature at this moment.

In my thirty years of life, this was the most torturous day. It is important for people to know themselves and know that their legs are not strong enough. I started from Shangyubeng at 8 o'clock in the morning, walked through a gentle forest and started to climb up the Despair Po, followed the green trash cans all the way, walked to one and found the next, arrived at the pass at 10 o'clock, took photos and checked in, started to walk on the flat road and downhill, arrived at the base camp at 10:30, ate a bowl of instant noodles, 25 yuan, set off at 11 o'clock, walked through a flat road with good scenery, started to go uphill, and finally the road near the ice lake began to become steeper. I arrived at the ice lake at 12 o'clock, climbed to the edge of the ice lake, walked to the water inlet of the ice lake, and the number of tourists around began to increase. Considering that I had to rush back to the inn before the sun set, I returned on time along the same route at 1 o'clock. Relatively speaking, the return road was easier and there were more downhills, but for a novice hiker, the downhill road was more difficult to walk and could not walk fast, especially there was a section of the road in the forest that was very slippery and easy to slip, and finally walked back to the inn at 5 o'clock. To be honest, the scenery of the ice lake was very average, and the key was to experience the feeling of conquering oneself along the way.

The road to the ice lake was very difficult to walk. Especially when we started to go up the mountain. At the beginning, it was a plain and alpine meadow, but later it was a vertical path without a good dirt road. We had to step on tree roots, big rocks, and tree stumps all the way up. The uphill road was very dangerous and lasted for a long time.

The road to the Ice Lake is a process of "plain-uphill-plain-uphill-downhill-plain-Laughing Farm-uphill". It is very long and a test of patience and perseverance.

After reaching a certain height, we arrived at the observation deck and saw part of the glacial lake. When I first saw it, I was really surprised and it was so spectacular. Suddenly, I felt that all the hard work I had done before was for this amazing sight.

When we arrived at the ice lake, it was completely frozen. The snow had accumulated to our knees. Our pants and shoes were soaked. Within a few minutes, there was no visibility at all on the ice lake. The ice lake behind us was completely out of sight; it was all fog.

The living facilities are simple, the conditions are slightly difficult, the accommodation environment is average, there is hot water, and you can charge your phone.

The melted snow water seeps under the ice sheet. This MINI glacier is seriously degenerating. I guess that in ancient times the area of ​​this ice sheet must have been much larger than it is now.

No one seems to know how deep the ice lake is. I once asked the local guide I met on the way, but she didn't know either. It should be a sacred place, so it's not convenient for scientific research. To be honest, walking by the lake, especially around the lake to the right side, is a bit eerie. The road over there is not easy to walk. There is a lake below, a landslide above, and gravel underfoot. It feels like you will slide into the lake if you are not careful. Maybe there are some ancient fish still alive in it. I wandered around the ice lake, dazed, and meditated for an hour, and started my return journey.

A group of people who don't care about their lives are doing whatever they want on the avalanche ruins. Tips: Don't be like us, it's easy to get up the avalanche ruins but hard to get down, and there really are avalanches, which is very dangerous. Thinking about it now, I'm very scared, I really was playing with my life.

The emotional impact of the ice lake is not as great as that of the rain avalanche, it is very quiet.

It is easier than hiking into Yubeng, but still tiring, and the scenery is nice.

There are two mountains to climb on the way to the ice lake. The first one doesn't have much snow, and the trees are so tall that it feels like walking through a primeval forest. Although the road conditions are average, there are huge green trash cans set up along the way, which are very conspicuous. It is definitely right to follow the trash cans.

There was a thin layer of ice on the ice lake, leaving only a small hole for the water to flow out and form a stream that accompanied us along the way. It was a real ice lake. The ice lake was filled with large and small Mani piles, with a small tip showing in the snow. It was probably made by tourists because we didn't see any Tibetans along the way.

The journey to the Ice Lake is very difficult. There are two roads to take, namely the gravel road and the regular dirt road + snow road. We happened to meet a group of foreign friends who were going down the Ice Lake. After a few communications, we learned that it was more convenient to take the regular dirt road + snow road to the Ice Lake, and to go down the Ice Lake directly from the gravel road. After verification, it was indeed the case. If you go down the Ice Lake on the dirt road + snow road, it will be very dangerous, especially on the snow road part, which is extremely difficult. On the last journey to the Ice Lake, the snow is about knee-high. Basically, you can't see your calf at all if you step on it. Moreover, the uphill slope is still very steep, with very dangerous woods and cliffs on both sides. When going up the mountain, try to step on the previous footprints, so as to ensure that you will not step on it firmly. There is no tolerance for error in this part of the journey, so be sure to be careful. When I saw the Ice Lake and Kawagebo after crossing the pass, I was filled with awe. The strong wind seemed to swallow me up in an instant. The closer I got to the Ice Lake, the deeper the snow became. The deepest part was up to my thighs. There was a section of the downhill road where I completely slid down because my feet were walking too slowly in the snow. Of course, I had to pay attention to safety when sliding down, and not hit anything hard to avoid getting hurt. When I came to the Ice Lake and looked up at Kawagebo, all the language, all the emotions, all the pain, became so small. Even I myself was so insignificant in front of it. So, I chose to close my eyes, put my hands together, pray for the people I love and the people who love me, and send my most sincere blessings. All the unhappiness, all the troubles, and all the knots in my heart were released like a flood. Only at this moment did I know that this should be a rebirth for me! Listening to the wind whistling in my ears, I could only pray.

The ice lake was disappointing. All I could see were a few mountains (only the tops were covered with snow) and a lake below. I didn't see how stunning it was. But since I was here, I couldn't waste so much time climbing up. I decided to go deeper into the hinterland just to see this, and I found it was beautiful.

The sign indicated that the total distance from Shangyubeng Village to the Ice Lake was 5.8 kilometers. It took us 3.5 hours. It was about 2.65 kilometers from Shangyubeng Village to the mixed forest of fir and arrow bamboo. It was very easy to walk through meadows and forests along the way. Then the 0.85 kilometers to Xiaonong Pass was the first hurdle, which was quite physically demanding. The 0.8 kilometers from Xiaonong Pass to Xiaonong Base Camp was downhill + flat road, which was very easy. Finally, there was another 1.5 kilometers of uphill, which was very hard. After walking this section, congratulations, you have successfully reached the Ice Lake. Xiaonong Base Camp is a supply point, with fried rice and instant noodles, which seem to be 20 yuan each. We met an old pilgrim at the Ice Lake, who told us that the holy water flowing down from the rock wall of the Ice Lake is from the Snow Region. Drinking it after praying to the gods can cure diseases and eliminate disasters... We took a few sips, and it was cold and sweet, so refreshing... Many Tibetan pilgrims also come here to worship, some chanting, some kowtowing. This is the closest place to the god Kawagebog, and the gods will not disappoint these pious hearts...

After passing through the base camp and climbing over the last steep slope, you can see the blue Ice Lake. Unlike the water source of Shenhu Lake, the water of the Ice Lake is the meltwater of the glacier on the top of the mountain. Go around the Mani pile by the lake and walk to the bottom of the glacier, where you can touch the melting thousand-year-old glacier with your own hands. However, you must be extremely careful when walking on the glacier. The snow water on the top of the mountain flows from under the glacier to the Ice Lake. The glacier is particularly fragile in summer.

Perhaps the result is not important, the process is the most intoxicating.

As one of the holy places of Meili Snow Mountain, the Ice Lake is endowed with religious nature. Here you can feel the ruggedness and solemnity of nature. When we went there in May, the snow near the alluvial fan was nearly 30 centimeters thick.

The weather was not good at that time, but the water of the ice lake was still light green. The whole ice lake was like an emerald dropped between Bau Bameng and Pabani Ding Jiuchao. The lake area was not large, but it was larger than expected.

You can climb the ice tongue above the glacier lake, but it is easier to go up than to come down. Without hiking shoes or trekking poles, you will most likely slide down on your butt.
