Hupao Dream Spring

Located south of West Lake, within the Dinghui Zen Temple on Daci Mountain, the Hupao Dream Spring derives its name from the Dream Spring. Legend has it that the Tang Dynasty monk Xingkong resided here, but later, due to water shortages, prepared to relocate. One day, he received divine instruction in a dream: a Tongzi Spring existed in Hengshan Mountain, Nanyue, and he should send two tigers to move it there. Indeed, during the day, two tigers pawed out, forming a cavern in the rock face, and spring water gushed out, hence the name Hupao Dream Spring. The water at Hupao is pure and sterile, with a high molecular density and surface tension, allowing it to fill a bowl without overflowing. It is known as the "Third Best Spring in the World." (The first is Jinan's Baotu Spring, some say Zhenjiang's Jinshan Zhongling Spring, and the second is Wuxi's Huishan Huiquan.) "Longjing Tea and Hupao Water" are known as the "Two Wonders of West Lake." Watching, listening to, tasting, and testing the springs is a delightful experience.

As soon as you enter the park, you can see a tree-lined avenue surrounded by towering metasequoia trees. A stream flows along the roadside.

The early morning sunlight shines through the gaps in the branches and leaves. If there is some mist, it would be like a fairyland!

From a distance, you can see many Hangzhou local uncles and aunts walking up the mountain with carts carrying large and small buckets. When you get closer, you will see that there are still people queuing!

It turns out that this is the artificial drainage of the Tiger Spring. Many Hangzhou people come here to drink water and take it home to make tea.

Curious, I scooped up some spring water flowing from a nearby crevice and drank it. It was indeed sweet and refreshing. But then an elderly man came over and told me not to drink the natural spring water, saying it might contain impurities and even insect eggs. The water from the artificial drainage outlet had been filtered by a device built into the mountain, so it was safe to drink!

Hupao is a place with beautiful forests and springs. Humming Mr. Li Shutong's soothing and melodious masterpiece "Farewell" on the winding mountain roads makes you feel relaxed and natural.

I recommend bringing empty mineral water bottles to fill with spring water. They say it's the best for brewing West Lake Longjing tea! I didn't bring anything, but I only realized it when I saw people filling buckets. Because it rained the day before, there was plenty of water in Hupao Park! Luckily, I was wearing slippers, so I wasn't afraid.

It's a long walk to get to the springs, but it's fun.

It's very good, especially the spring water there can be used to make tea directly. I have to use Longjing tea.

Dinghui Zen Temple is devoid of clouds and mist, and twin tigers roam the green rocks of Nanyue. Pure boy's water is brought in, brewing a sweet tea in the cup.

"Hupao Dream Spring"—one of the ten new scenic spots of West Lake—is a place where, in the preface to "Hupao Spring Inscription," Ming Dynasty poet Song Lian wrote: "In the fourteenth year of the Yuanhe reign of the Tang Dynasty (819 AD), Master Xingkong visited Cishan, delighted by its serene spiritual energy and settled there in a state of meditation. Finding it empty, he offered it away. Suddenly, a divine being knelt and said, 'Since your arrival, we have rendered great service. Why have you abandoned us? The child from Nanyue will soon send two tigers to move the spring. Master, don't worry.' The next day, springs emerged from two Hupao Mountains, sweet, rich, pure, and free of bacteria." This is the story of "Tiger Moving the Springs"—the origin of the name Hupao Spring. The Ming Dynasty's "Records of the Four Seasons' Pleasant Appreciation" states: "Among the springs of West Lake, Hupao is the finest. Among the teas of West Lake, Longjing is the finest." Therefore, Longjing tea and Hupao water are known as the "twin wonders of West Lake."

When we were almost at Hupao, we could already see tall trees.

One theory states: Baotu Spring is the best spring in the world, Huishan Spring in Wuxi is the second best spring in the world, Hupao Spring in Hangzhou is the third best spring in the world, Luyu Spring in Guangjiao Temple in Shangrao is the fourth best spring in the world, and Daming Temple Spring in Pingshan Hall in Yangzhou is the fifth best spring in the world.

Hupao Park is home to Hupao Spring, the third-largest spring in the world and one of Hangzhou's two famous springs. Its gurgling, clear, sweet water remains a prime source for brewing West Lake Longjing tea. The park is tranquil and picturesque, with many locals bringing buckets to fetch the spring water. It's also the only place where no one throws coins into the pond, to protect the water source. The memorial hall for Master Hongyi, Li Shutong, is also located within the park. The park's elegant setting is perfect for gathering two or three friends, enjoying a pot of Longjing tea and a piece of lute music – a truly tranquil experience! And admission is only 15 yuan. Away from the bustle of West Lake, enjoy a tranquil and relaxing escape!

Hupao is located at the foot of Baihe Peak on Daci Mountain, southwest of West Lake. In the 14th year of Yuanhe Period in Tang Dynasty (819), Master Xingkong settled down here and built a temple. Jigong, a great monk in Song Dynasty, first became a monk in Lingyin Temple, then lived in Jingci Temple, and passed away in Hupao Temple. Master Hongyi, a great monk who was called "the 11th generation master of the revival of Nanshan Vinaya School" by Buddhists, also became a monk in Hupao Temple. The temple is famous for its famous springs. The three famous monks Xingkong, Jidian and Hongyi added a legendary and solemn color to this ancient temple. Hupao Spring is one of the seven famous springs in the world, and it is good for making tea.

It’s a small park, but I love it.

1. I was amazed by the Metasequoia forest as soon as I entered the gate!

2. Hupao tea and Longjing tea are a perfect match, so good!

West Lake Longjing truly lives up to its reputation. She told us it was pre-Qingming tea, freshly picked a few days ago, selling for several thousand yuan per pound. It's all natural and packed with vitamins. We drank a full four grams of tea. She also said, "First, smell the aroma. It has a bean curd aroma." Sister, why didn't I smell any bean curd aroma at all? I just felt relaxed and refreshed, feeling upbeat and invigorated. It's also somewhat similar to my favorite Queshe tea, yet also slightly different. Other green teas all have similar flavors, but I didn't notice anything. The first few brews were especially delicious. Then, when it got stronger, it wasn't as good, and then it became weaker.

3. The tiger sculptures and the Hupao Mengquan sculptures are also very good.

Go north from Hupao Road on the east side of Liuhe Pagoda to Hupao Park, where the famous Hupao Dream Spring is located.

The Hupao Park scenic area, centered around Hupao Spring, evolved from the mountain forest-style temple gardens of the former Hupao Dinghui Temple. Walking along the Hupao Path, you'll find a blanket of lush greenery, soothing the mind and lungs. A mountain spring flows alongside the path, channeled by a spout, where a long line of buckets, large and small, awaits its water.

Going forward past Hanhui Pavilion is the Hupao Spring and the Li Shutong Memorial Hall built on the original site of the Daci Dinghui Temple. Further inside are the Jigong Pagoda Courtyard and the Hongyi Master Relic Pagoda.

It's a pretty good area. It's not a very large scenic spot, but the scenery is beautiful. The trees are super tall, the air is fresh, and the locals bring buckets to collect the spring water. Not many tourists during non-holidays, so it's quiet and peaceful. It's not far from Jiuxi and Hangzhou Zoo, so you can visit them on the side.

By Strolling leisurely |

I really like this place. It's a good place for family outings. The scenery is very beautiful. If you like hiking, you can climb directly to the Liuhe Pagoda area from here. Many citizens pull carts in to fetch water. It's great!

Time didn't allow, so I abandoned my original plan to visit Xixi Wetland and instead headed to nearby Hupao Park. Well, it's just a park, with a ten-yuan entrance fee, but Hupao Dream Spring is Hangzhou's most famous spring, with crystal-clear water. Tea brewed with this spring is said to be sweet, refreshing, and leaves a lingering fragrance. There's a Jigong Temple and some small temples on the mountain. The scenery isn't great, but it's a great escape from the summer heat.

The park is tranquil and inviting, with steps ascending the mountainside to visit pavilions, a spring pond, and the Arhat Hall. At the spring viewing area, you'll find a tiger statue digging the ground for water. Due to a tight schedule for my Hanfu photoshoot, I didn't take many photos of the park, which is a shame. Those with time to spare will appreciate the park's unique scenery and quaint atmosphere, making it a perfect place for relaxation.

The famous Hupao Spring is here, and there are relatively few people. The environment is quiet and elegant, and the tickets are not expensive. If you have time, go and have a look.

The air is fresh, the spring is the best in the world, and the water is really sweet and delicious.

This area is located in the mountains near West Lake. I particularly like Hupao Road because it's shaded by trees and has a fresh, clean air. There's also a gurgling stream along the road. It's perfect for cycling and gliding.

From there, we headed to Hupao Park. Adult admission is 15 yuan (you scan the QR code at the entrance), and 10 yuan with Alipay. Children and seniors are half price. Hupao Park is famous for its spring water, and many elderly people come here every day to fetch water, both large and small. We also took a bottle of mineral water and tasted it. It was cool, but it didn't taste anything special.

We passed by Hupao Dream Spring and arrived at the park early, which was a pleasant surprise on this trip. The park isn't large, so it wasn't crowded. The lush greenery made walking through it feel light and refreshing. Hupao gets its name from the Dream Spring. Hupao Spring is one of Hangzhou's famous springs. It's said that West Lake Longjing tea is brewed with its water. Every day, Hangzhou residents line up to get their water. Bring your own cup or bottle to the park for free. You'll find the line on the left side of the park upon entering, and it's easy to find. The park also houses the Li Shutong Memorial Shrine, which is worth a look.

By Beibei Loves Traveling |

We arrived at Hupao Dream Spring early in the morning, just before 9:00. There were only a few tour groups around. As we walked along, we were greeted by clear, pleasant streams flowing down on either side. Everyone knows the water at Hupao Dream Spring is fragrant and sweet, and even now, many people still come here to haul water, bringing large mineral water bottles from home to fill up several bottles at a time to take home. The onlookers couldn't resist trying a few sips. Deep within Hupao Dream Spring, there really is a tiger, so I imagine there must be a story behind it.

By Zhong Yuchao |

Hupao in the early morning is a good place to breathe in air. There is a Hanhui Pavilion in the middle of the park. I usually sit there quietly or chat with the local grandpa and grandma until I hear the loud speaker of the tour guide. Then I get up and leave quickly. After passing the Luohan Hall, I reach the hiking trail on the back mountain. I climb up the steps all the way to the top of the mountain and sit quietly for a while in the breeze. Then I return the same way. But that is all in the past. Now I start from Jiuxi, reach the back mountain and then go down the mountain. Friends who love tea can taste Longjing tea brewed with Hupao spring water in Hupao, although I have never tasted it...

This was the first park I visited after getting a park pass. It was quite nice. It has three major attractions: Hupao Spring, the Hongyi Monastery Memorial Hall, and the Jigong Temple. In the summer heat, I couldn't resist drinking the cool, delicious water from Hupao Spring. I saw many people carrying large mineral water buckets. The park is also quite scenic.

I really like this quiet place, with gurgling springs, Li Shutong's former residence where I can pay tribute, and Longjing tea to taste.

The whole park feels like the Wizard of Oz. The trees are very tall and big. The park is very quiet. It is just below the Siyan Well on Hupao Road. It is very convenient and worth a visit.

The spring water is drinkable! The spring water is drinkable! The spring water is drinkable! I can't stress this enough! This is one of my favorite places, a natural oxygen bar, the air is filled with the scent of trees, grass, and flowers. Going to Hupao in the summer really makes me feel like I'm living here. Sometimes it reminds me of the countryside in movies, sometimes of the small bridges and flowing water in movies, sometimes of primeval forests. If you can imagine it, Hupao is incredibly beautiful. Even the tour guides love it. Entering and exiting feels like a baptism of fire.

Hupao Park is located on Hupao Road in the West Lake Scenic Area. The transportation is very convenient. The bus stop is attached. Just get off at it. I went there during the Spring Festival and there were not many people. I recommend bus No. 4. There are many buses and it is convenient and fast!

Hupao Park itself is not big and is very quiet. There is a long path leading to the temple and the spring at the entrance. There are streams flowing on both sides. It is surrounded by mountains and forests. There are not many tourists, so it feels like a secluded place!

The first thing that catches your eye when you enter the park is the cranes in the pond in front of you. They are lifelike, but feel a bit artificial, like a traditional old tourist attraction, not very natural!

Going up the road, there is a small pavilion at one end of the pool, which is very interesting. There is a small bridge across the stream, where you can rest and take photos. (Photo)

Going further, two big tigers instantly became the protagonists. They were huge stone sculptures and looked very majestic!

When we arrived at xxx, there was a crowd of people gathered in the small square on the left. I took a look inside and realized this was the water collection point for Hupao Spring. It was great! No need to go down to the spring to fetch water, as I had the impression people in Jinan would do. This felt a bit like a water pipe, so convenient! Tea lovers, you can bring some containers to collect water and brew a pot of Longjing tea back home!

After passing through xxx, there is a small temple. On the right is a long staircase, which is very impressive. At the end of the stairs is the inscription wall of Hupao Spring. Walking along the wall, I suddenly saw five words: "The Third Spring in the World". Wow, what a low-key scenic spot! Haha, I thought all the other ones were the first. No matter what, this one modestly added two more words. What I was most curious about at the time was where the first and second springs were?

Walking forward along the wall, you will reach the core part of the scenic area, where the stone tablet of Hupao Dream Spring is located. However, the stone tablet is not very popular. What is popular is a colorful stone tiger under the cliff. Everyone lines up to take photos with it!

Another highlight is a giant stone sculpture of a reclining monk and two tigers. Legend has it that the Hupao Spring was discovered by these two tigers!

Going down the mountain from the other side, since there are fewer tourists, it is easier to take photos. If you want to take photos, it is recommended that you go in the morning when there are fewer people.

Overall, relative to the ticket price, it is still worth going in for a walk

The scenery is beautiful. There is also the Hongyi Master Memorial Hall inside. Friends who admire Hongyi Master must visit it.

I felt great when I was searching for guides. But later I really didn't want to go because of the attitude of the aunt at the door.

Hupao Spring is a unique scenic spot in Hangzhou. The ticket price is not expensive. The vegetation in the scenic area is extremely lush, giving people the feeling of a sacred forest.

The scenic area is neither small nor large. There is a tiger statue at Hupao Spring, but it is very small.

There is a large area of water in the Hupao Spring Scenic Area, and the Li Shutong Memorial Hall is also within the Hupao Spring Scenic Area. If you come to Hangzhou, I recommend you to come and take a look.

Tiger Run is not big, and the slope is not steep, so children and the elderly can walk without getting tired. The most important thing is that there is a stream, which is very good. Children love it when they walk for a while and play in the water. The dense shade of the trees makes it a very comfortable natural oxygen bar.

By Little Gardener Lucy |

Actually, you don't need to join a tour group to reach Hupao; you can go on your own. The tour guide usually ends the tour at the teapot at Hupao and returns. You can continue up the mountain from the left path, but be prepared, as there's no turning back once you've gone up. You'll have to climb over three hills before exiting at Jiuxi Shibawan. Anyone who's done it will agree that the hike is worthwhile; the scenery is truly stunning, and from the summit, you can see Longjing Tea and a panoramic view of Hangzhou.

By Ding ah_ |

I've wanted to go to Tiger Run for six months, but I kept putting it off until this week. It's very close to the zoo and children's park, all on the same road, so it's always crowded. You can even buy group tickets... It's definitely worth a visit!

Inside Hupao, the temperature was 3 degrees Celsius cooler than outside, and the springs gurgled. As we ascended, we could see a small stream flowing down from above, and many visitors took out small towels to wipe their faces and hands, a delightful sight. Further up, there was a tap where you could collect water from the Hupao springs. Many people came with large buckets to collect the water and boil it home. [Note] The spring water cannot be drunk directly; it must be boiled before consumption. Further up, there were two teahouses, one of which, Yinyuantang, offered group purchases and had a nice atmosphere. I had tea there (reviewed separately).

Many people don't know that Hupao has a mountaintop. I asked the staff and they told me there are two routes up. When I finally reached the top, I truly felt like I was truly climbing a mountain. My legs were shaking after I came down. From the top, you can overlook the Qiantang River, West Lake, Meijiawu, and the Four-Eyed Well. It's definitely worth the climb, though we were unlucky that day with a foggy sky and a poor view.

There are so many beautiful views, I can’t fit them all in the pictures!

Tickets are 15 yuan. It is the most beautiful spring in West Lake and is known as the "third best spring in the world" along with Longjing Spring. Jigong, a great monk in the Song Dynasty, first became a monk in Lingyin Temple, then lived in Jingci Temple and passed away in Hupao Temple. There are not many people visiting on weekends. The sweet fragrance of osmanthus is very suitable for travel.

Hupao and Liuhe are on the same route, making it very convenient to visit. Girls who are afraid of insects should avoid going to Hupao when the weather is hot and humid, otherwise you'll end up running all over the mountain screaming like me. I brought a bottle of Hupao spring water to drink at the hotel (it needs to be boiled because the locals say the E. coli count is too high).

It's a bit like a forest park. The air is very good and humid. There is a place where you can get spring water, but there are many people and it's hard to queue.

It had rained the day before when we went there, so the environment and smell were just right for a visit.

The park has beautiful scenery and clear spring water. Residents from all over the area come here to enjoy the water. The stone tiger inside is someone's childhood memory, hahaha~

Very good. The scenery is pleasant. The environment of each place in the scenic area is good

As it has become a tourist attraction due to the influence of West Lake, admission should actually be free.

The mountains here are rolling and the canyons are deep. It is not only a place where secluded ravines, ancient caves and Buddhist temple ruins are concentrated, but also the source of "Longjing Tea and Hupao Water".

There are five major scenic spots distributed in the hinterland of Yunshan, namely Longjing Tea, Hupao Dream Spring, Jiuxi Smoke Trees, Manlong Guiyu and Yunqi Bamboo Path, which account for half of the ten scenic spots of the new West Lake.

Hupao Spring, Longjing Spring and Yuquan Spring are known as the three famous springs of West Lake.

According to legend, during the Tang Dynasty, the eminent monk Xingkong came here to spread Buddhism. Due to the lack of water, he was about to leave, but was enlightened by a god in his dream. Two tigers transformed from the immortal children of Nanyue dug the ground on the mountain to create a spring. So the Daci Dinghui Zen Temple, commonly known as Hupao Temple, was built next to the spring site.

However, compared to the past, the water is noticeably smaller, and it's no longer as spectacular as it once was. It's only a name for itself. I don't even know if the Hupao mineral water is from the original Hupao springs; it seems like there's not much water coming out. It's a bit disappointing. Now, I'd regret not going, and even more if I did.

Tickets are 15 yuan, but there's a promotion at the entrance where you can scan a QR code and get one for just 10 yuan. The park isn't big, so you can walk through it in an hour. Here are a few things to consider: First, this is where Jigong passed away, so it's a spiritual place. As my mom says, "A spiritual place doesn't make you tired." It's really not tiring and is quite comfortable!

Second, let's talk about the water. As the third-largest spring in the world, the water quality is undeniable. Locals flocked here to collect water, often in buckets. We only managed to fill two bottles with our beverages.

If you don't drink here, there is no secondary consumption. People say that West Lake Longjing tea is like tiger water. It's a rare opportunity to buy Longjing tea here, so I just spend money here.

We went there during the hottest time of summer. Fortunately, there were many trees to block the sun and we found a place to cool down.

The characteristics of Hupao are still very obvious, with many sculptures and stories, but the ticket inspection is very strict. I can buy student tickets elsewhere, but I can't buy them here. I'm still a little unhappy.

As soon as I entered Hupao, the undisguised green mountains greeted my gaze. Lush trees, their branches crisscrossed, their roots covered in moss. The Hupao Trail runs right at the foot of the mountain. Shortly after entering the park, I saw people queuing for water. I'd heard of this scene before, but I'd never seen it before. Most of them were elderly, using specially made carts to collect water. Be warned: the spring water cannot be drunk directly; it must be boiled before use. It's well worth the visit.

Walking into Hupao on a hot day, you'll feel instantly refreshed. Walking to the edge of the spring, enjoying a cup of Longjing tea and a bowl of lotus root starch is truly relaxing.

When I went there, I bought a cup of Longjing tea brewed from Hupao Spring and sat there to read a book and drink tea leisurely.

Hupao Spring is known as the "third best spring in the world." A Hangzhou saying goes, "Longjing tea and Hupao water." Longjing tea and Hupao water are often called the "two best of West Lake." Longjing tea brewed with this spring water boasts a particularly delicate and fragrant flavor. Watching, listening to, tasting, and testing the spring water is a truly enjoyable experience. Many locals carry large buckets to collect the spring water. The mountain also boasts a stupa, the Jigong Pagoda, and the pagoda dedicated to Master Hongyi (Li Shutong), a fusion of nature and humanity, a spiritual energy of heaven and earth.

So when you come to the mountain, you must be sincere and don't talk nonsense, otherwise Jigong will hear you and punish you slightly.

The most beautiful scenery was Hupao Spring. It wasn't crowded, the morning sun was just right, and the air was incredibly fresh. Also, the Hangzhou tour guide was incredibly good. Although it was just a day trip, he was incredibly enthusiastic and attentive, which really added to the city's appeal. However, we only spent one day in Hangzhou, so we didn't get to see many of the attractions. I hope to spend a few days exploring and enjoying the city more.

I feel that there are fewer springs and the scenery is not as good as Baotu Spring.
