Qingteng Bookstore

青藤书屋

Qingteng Study, formerly known as Liuhua Study, was the residence of Xu Wei, one of the three great literati of the Ming Dynasty. Compared to the bustling city nearby, it feels like a Zen retreat. Upon entering, a gable wall bears the inscription "Zizaiyan." Entering a path, one finds a patio, a green ivy climbing along the wall, and a square pond (also known as the Heavenly Pond). The pond, visible from the study window, is supported by a pillar inscribed with the Chinese characters "Dizhu Zhongliu." Purified by the Heavenly Pond and the green ivy, the study resembles Xu Wei's self-described "untouched by dust," a small space yet a harmonious union with its personality.

By Xiling Pork Chops |

Hidden in the alleys of Shaoxing, it is small and quiet, with one room in one yard.

By A fluttering seagull |

In a remote alley, there is a very small house. The ivy in the garden was replanted in the 1980s.

By fincen |

I didn't go in to play directly at Cangqiao, but this old street is full of historical sites and is very unique.

By Looking at Fish |

Hidden at the end of Cangqiao Street, it is difficult to find. Although it is small in size, it has a strong sense of history. The depressed grape vines and the Zizai Rock in front of it are impressive.

By Andy.Bohu.Tang |

Qingteng Book House is a place with a more leisurely and petty bourgeoisie feel. It is very suitable for an afternoon.

By Wuyuan Peaceful Residence |

Shaoxing is indeed a hometown of talents. Qi Baishi was willing to be a lackey under Qingteng!

By retreat |

It's a very small place in an alley. If you don't particularly like this food, it won't be interesting to come here.

Oh, I went there in early November 2018, and it’s free now. Please update the information on China-TravelNote!

By Lazy Cat |

Although it is free, there is a small house and a small garden.

By Rubik's Cube Bear |

I happened to see Xu Wei's calligraphy and painting exhibition at the Palace Museum last month. It turns out Xu Wei was from here. Qingteng Book House is very small, so I finished it in a few glances.

By Ordinary life |

On the first day, I didn't buy a combined ticket, so I couldn't go in. I just looked at it from the outside and it felt just okay.

Xu Wei, the great painter known only as Dugu, was admired by Qi Baishi and others. He, along with Xie Jin and Yang Shen, is considered one of the three great talents of the Ming Dynasty. I truly believe this title. He was proficient in opera, painting, and the Book of Changes. He even served as an advisor to Hu Zongnan. Perhaps his repeated failures in examinations were a regret, a sign of unappreciated talent, but for us, perhaps it is precisely because of these factors that we are able to witness Xu Wei, a unique artist who stood apart from his peers.

The transportation to various scenic spots in Shaoxing is very convenient. The ancient city area is centered on Lu Xun's hometown, and many former residences of celebrities are arranged in order. Qingteng Bookstore is free of charge. I was the only one there when I went there. There is a very narrow alley, a square well, a banana tree, and a bookstore. The phrase "hidden in the city" is just right for this place.

This is the residence of Xu Wei, a great scholar of the Ming Dynasty. Known as the Green Vine Old Man and the Green Vine Taoist, he served as an advisor to Hu Zongxian, helping him capture Xu Hai and lure out Wang Zhi. After Hu Zongxian's imprisonment, Xu Wei, driven mad by anxiety, attempted suicide nine times but survived. He was later imprisoned and sentenced to death for murdering his step-wife. After seven years in prison, he was rescued by friends including Zhang Yuanqiang. He subsequently traveled south to Nanjing and north to Shanggu, observing the desolate frontiers and often composing poignant and tragic poems. In his later years, he suffered from poverty and illness, and his collection of thousands of books was completely sold. He referred to himself as "a man of both southern and northern accents." He died in 1593, the 21st year of the Wanli reign, at the age of 73.

By the way, I would like to express my feelings for Hu Zongxian. Although he was a member of Yan Song's party, he was an upright person. He was a famous general who fought against the Japanese pirates before Qi Jiguang. If he was not a member of Yan's party, his ending would certainly have been recorded in history like Qi Jiguang. Old man Qingteng would not have had such a miserable old age.

Qingteng Book House is the former residence of Xu Wei, an outstanding writer and artist in the Ming Dynasty of China. It is not so well-known in the minds of the public and is slightly inferior to Sanwei Book House, but it is also a place where you can feel the literati and poets.

It was a rainy day in Jiangnan when I went there. I wandered around the streets for a long time before I found this place. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by the greenery and the quietness. The simple fragrance of books filled my face. It was a small and unique courtyard. I like it.

By ¥Walker Sun¥ |

Before I went, I searched for reviews on China-TravelNote and saw a tourist raving about this place. After I got there, I was disappointed. The library only had half a courtyard and a room, and there weren't many historical materials on display. If you're not particularly interested in calligraphy and painting, I recommend not wasting your time here.

Qingteng Book House is a Ming Dynasty residence located in a small alley in Shaoxing. It's a small attraction, a courtyard house with a garden. It's the former residence of Xu Wei (Xu Wenchang), a prominent Ming Dynasty writer, artist, and strategist. Xu Wei was a man of integrity, yet his life was full of hardships. He joined the army in his early years, fighting against Japanese invaders to serve his country and his people. Later, he was imprisoned for some reason, but after being rescued by a friend, he fell into depression. He indulged his passion for nature and traveled extensively, earning a living by selling books and paintings and writing for others. His later years were miserable, and he died of poverty and illness at the age of seventy-three. Xu Wei's mastery of calligraphy and painting made him one of the most outstanding painters of his time. The furnishings within the house embody the characteristics of impoverished scholars of ancient times. Xu Wei was a remarkable talent of his time, but unfortunately, he was not valued by the corrupt Ming emperor and government.

By pale |

If you come to Shaoxing, you must listen to Yue Opera, and as an opera fan, it is natural for you to visit and see the mark of this Ming Dynasty opera master.

I think Zheng Banqiao of the Qing Dynasty regarded himself as a "running dog of Qingteng", so he felt closer to him.

By style of writing |

After that, I kept walking, turning alleys here and there. After searching for a long time, I finally found Qingteng Bookstore under various signs.

Qingteng Library is where Xu Wei lived. Xu Wei was a Ming Dynasty writer, painter, calligrapher, dramatist, and military strategist. He seemed quite impressive.

By Tamama |

When I was on Kurabashi Naoshi Street, I passed by and took a look at the door.

By Pure Joy |

It is a real old building. Although it is not big, it is worth visiting. It has a great feeling. Moreover, I really want to see the place where Xu Wenchang lived.

By Ma Xiaojun DreamAx |

Xu Wenchang's place is not big, but quite quiet.

By █ months in water |

The place is not big, just an ordinary small garden with two rooms.

But the feeling inside is very quiet, and there is also some Jiangnan flavor in it. I remember there are ancient trees. The ticket is five yuan, I think it is worth going there to learn about Xu Wei's life and works.

I personally don't like places that are too noisy and crowded, so this place is really good.

By Silent Valley Facing the Wind |

I happened to come across a copy of "Xu Wenchang's Portrait Album" and learned about this man, one of the three great talents of the Ming Dynasty. Whenever I pass by Qingteng Book House, I naturally have to pay it a visit.

Yueyun Yaji stands alone in the world

Xu Wei, a Ming Dynasty writer, painter, and military strategist, is considered one of the three great men of the Ming Dynasty, along with Xie Jin and Yang Shen. He is considered the Chinese Van Gogh, a master of calligraphy, painting, poetry, prose, and drama. His life was full of ups and downs: his second brother died young, he married three times, he worked as a hanger-on, he was well-educated, but his family was scattered. He was wrongly imprisoned for seven years, failed to pass the imperial examinations eight times, committed suicide nine times, and his tenth death is truly lamentable!

Qingteng Library, formerly known as Liuhua Library, is mentioned in the Eight Scenic Spots Illustrated Records: Pregnant Mountain Boat, Hunru Boat, Persimmon Leaf Residence, Cherry Pavilion, Chouzi Hall, Tianchi, Shuteng'a, and Zizai Rock. The magical "Tianchi" sparks endless creative inspiration; the handwritten "Zizai Rock" carved into stone evokes a sense of freedom. His talent is as vibrant as the ivy he planted himself, vigorous and unrestrained.

The study of Xu Wei, a Ming Dynasty scholar. It's small, and admission is 5 yuan. It's located in a small alleyway. A thorough tour took about half an hour. A quick visit took only 2 minutes.

This couplet in Qingteng Book House, a few crooked houses, a man with a mixed accent, is it a portrayal of Xu Wei's life? This house is in a small alley and few people go there.

By Bamboo Wind Song |

The lotus flowers in the Qingteng Bookstore haven't bloomed yet, but the ivy is growing well, its roots tangled and intertwined, making it look quite old. Inside, there's a biography of Xu Wei and his works, but interestingly, there's no mention of Xu Wei murdering his wife. The works of Xu Wei's good friend Chen Laolian also touch upon this. I happened to be reading Wang Zengqi's essays recently, and there's a mention of this person there, which was very relatable. Admission to the bookstore is only 5 yuan, so if you're interested, give it a try.

By Mars User |

In terms of attractions alone, there is nothing to see, just a small courtyard.

However, if you are interested in Xu Wei (Qingteng Lao Ren), you can go and see it. Not only are there paintings and calligraphy on display, but above the paintings and calligraphy hanging on the walls, there are also long and narrow display boards that introduce the personal changes and major and minor events of Xu Wei from his birth to his death.

If you don’t look up, you might not notice it, but after reading it, my neck hurts.

There was another funny and sad anecdote. I was following the navigation to Qingteng Bookstore, but when I arrived, I saw a dance hall, with groups of people smoking at the entrance. I backtracked and looked around until I saw a nondescript sign. I then walked down a small alley and turned at an intersection before I found Qingteng Bookstore. As I wandered around the bookstore, I could hear the sounds of music from the dance hall next door.

By Blue Chi |

I really like this small courtyard, and the calligraphy works are also my favorite. We actually spent a lot of time on this small courtyard.

The residence of Xu Wei, one of the three great talents of the Ming Dynasty, is hidden among the houses and is a bit difficult to find. You can look for it along the road following the signs. The house is quite small, but very Zen. If you are interested, you can go and look for it. It is very close to Cangqiao Street.

Deep and quiet, with winding paths leading to secluded places. It is a very simple and elegant house, with a style as noble as Xu Wei himself. The ticket price is only 5 yuan, and it is worth stopping to take a look.

The most surprising thing about this trip to Shaoxing is that the entrance fee is 5 yuan, and it only takes 5 minutes to walk around all the attractions. However, the style of the courtyard, away from the hustle and bustle of the scenic area, really allows you to feel the tranquility of Qingteng Book House.

Qingteng Library is the residence of Xu Wei, a prominent Ming Dynasty scholar. Tucked away in a secluded alley, it lacks a prestigious gate, yet its interior exudes refinement and elegance, a breath of fresh air. As someone who studied fine arts, I'm a huge fan of his style, so I salute him.

Qingteng Book House is also located on the same street as Lu Xun's former residence. It seems to close at 5:00 PM, so plan your visit accordingly. Admission is 5 yuan, though I'm not sure if it's changed. Located at No. 10 Dacheng Lane, Qianguanxiang, in downtown Shaoxing, it was the former residence of Xu Wei, a prominent Ming Dynasty writer and artist. Qingteng Book House is at the end of a deep, narrow alley, with green tiles and green walls. A few green trees jut out from the walls to welcome visitors. A pair of black gates are visible above, with the words "Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit - Qingteng Book House" inscribed on the entrance.

Tucked away in a quiet alley, lies a secluded house. It was here that Xu Wei, the renowned Ming Dynasty calligrapher and painter, once lived. His name was even considered a "wannabe" by Zheng Banqiao. Shaoxing folklore abounds with stories about Xu Wenchang, including the legendary dish "braised pork with preserved mustard greens." Several of his paintings hang in the exhibition hall, including the renowned "Ink Grapes," though its authenticity remains uncertain. Walking down a winding, deep, narrow alley paved with bluestone, you'll find few visitors and soon find Qingteng Book House, two old-style bungalows located at No. 10 Dacheng Lane, Qianguan Lane, Shaoxing. If you have time, explore the place and experience a quiet and leisurely time. Admission is 5 yuan.
