北大营草场位于昆明市寻甸县城东北方，距离寻甸县城23公里，拥有1.8万亩原生态草场的北大营，观光旅游区就有36平方公里，在云贵高原多山的地形里，能有如此广袤的一片草场实属难得。除了骑马和烧烤工具租借外，进出草场、游览露营一律免费，可以说是离昆明市最近的一片免费的天然大草原。

每年盛夏，万亩草原，芳草萋萋，牛羊徜徉。北大营草原旅游开发，注重规划，引进外资，对北大营草原的开发已经初见成效。主要利用草原、温泉、丘陵、孤山、瀑布、山泉、河谷、复杂地形、天然景观等优势，重点开发草原影视基地、西部小镇、马会、滑草、越野吉普、热气球等旅游项目，有较强的明显优势。寻甸北大营草场总规划面积36平方公里，占地18000亩。

亚热带高原季风气候;每年四月至七月间，草色翠绿、气候温暖，较适合游玩与露营；错开了七到九月的雨季，十月和十一月时前往也能体验秋高气爽的滋味。
