Shuimogou Scenic Area is located about 25 kilometers southwest of Urumqi. You can reach it by taxi, private car, or local buses from Urumqi city center. Walking is not recommended due to the distance, but hiking can be enjoyed within the scenic area.
The scenic area is open year-round, but the best times to visit are during the spring and autumn months (April to June, September to October) when the weather is mild, and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer can be hot, and winter can be cold, so those seasons are less ideal for outdoor activities.
The entrance fee for Shuimogou Scenic Area is approximately 40-60 CNY. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance, and some online platforms may also offer advance bookings. It is advisable to check for any discounts or special offers before your visit.
It is not mandatory to book tickets in advance, but doing so during peak tourist seasons (spring and autumn) can save time and ensure availability. Booking a day or two in advance is generally sufficient.
You will need at least 3-4 hours to fully explore the Shuimogou Scenic Area, depending on your interest in hiking and the specific activities you want to do (such as boat rides or hot springs). If you plan to hike extensively or visit the hot springs, allow for a full day.
Guided tours are available in Mandarin. Audio guides are typically not provided, but some local tour operators may offer private tours with multilingual guides upon request.
Start with a visit to the Shuimogou River for scenic views, then hike along the trails to explore the waterfalls and lush forests. If you're interested in relaxing, visit the hot springs afterward. A half-day itinerary covers the main highlights, while a full day allows for a more leisurely experience.

Cash is widely accepted, but mobile payments through apps like Alipay and WeChat Pay are commonly used in the area. Credit cards may not be accepted at all locations, so it is advisable to carry some cash as a backup.
Many restaurants in the Urumqi area offer halal food, and you can also find vegetarian and vegan options at some of the local eateries. In the scenic area, most food options will cater to traditional Chinese tastes, with halal options available nearby.
There are souvenir shops near the entrance of the scenic area selling local handicrafts, textiles, and souvenirs related to Xinjiang culture. Traditional Xinjiang rugs, dried fruits, and spices are popular souvenirs.
After visiting, you can return to Urumqi by taxi, bus, or private car. If you're continuing your trip to nearby attractions, private transport or organized tours are recommended due to the distance between landmarks.
