Legend has it that Mount Nebo is the burial place of Moses, who lived to be 120 years old. It is considered the most revered holy place in Jordan. It is nine kilometers away from the city of Madaba. It is rumored that Moses saw the entire Promised Land here, including Jerusalem, the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, Jericho, etc.
After the second century AD, many Christians came to Mount Nebo and built churches, where they practiced as spiritual practitioners, preached, and practiced medicine. The main church building on the hill today dates back to the early fourth century AD. The church floor is inlaid with images of hunting, animal husbandry, farming, and various birds and animals, a typical Byzantine mosaic.
Next to the main church are several mosaic-covered tombs dating back to 531 AD. Next to the main church is a smaller chapel built in 597 AD during the Byzantine era, which later expanded into a larger complex. From the terrace in front of the church, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. On clear days, you can even see the rooftops of Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
Jordan has a subtropical Mediterranean climate. Most of the country is covered by desert, and rivers are scarce. However, the mild climate makes it suitable for tourism year-round, though you should be mindful of temperature fluctuations. October to May is the rainiest season, marking the peak tourist season, while June to September is relatively dry.
