Canglong Gorge, located west of Tazi Village in Gaozhuang Town, is one of Laiwu's eight scenic spots. Its banks are craggy with jagged rocks, with cliffs jutting outwards. Across, an arched bridge soars like a rainbow, while on either side, sheer rocks rise like towering walls. To the east of the gorge stands a seven-story pagoda from the Yuan Dynasty, and to the west, a Ming Dynasty-era pavilion overlooking the gorge. Qi Shijiao of the Ming Dynasty built pavilions and gardens here, while Zhang Daoyi of the Qing Dynasty also constructed "Lejizhai" (Likely referring to a "Happy House") here. The cliffs on both sides are dotted with carvings by renowned figures throughout history, including "Drunken Stone," "Waiting for the Moon," "Cloud Nest," and "Peach Forest." Some are richly etched and feature a variety of compositional elements; others blend strength and softness, creating an endlessly transformative experience; and still others exude an air of elegance and grace amidst their dignified poise, making them truly rare and exquisite examples of Laiwu's stone carvings.
After heavy rains in summer, floods rush down, water mist rises several feet high, and the sound of thunder resounds for miles, like a rising dragon. This is the "Cangxia Thunder" landscape, one of the eight ancient scenic spots in Laiwu. Therefore, the ancients praised it in a poem: "No thick clouds are seen, only the thunder is roaring, who knows that the water is rushing in Longxia."
The gorge boasts several stone carvings dating back to the Ming Dynasty and previous dynasties, including "Deep in the Peach Garden," "Waiting for the Moon," "Drunken Old Man," and "Railing Clouds." The Tanhua Tower, built by Ming Dynasty Jinshi Qi Shijiao, sits on the gorge's edge, where he left his famous "Qingxian" poem, which remains popular to this day. Famous figures throughout history have visited the gorge, leaving behind countless timeless verses with their open minds and generous spirits. In recent years, to further develop Canglong Gorge, a magnificent, imitation-antique gate with carved beams and painted rafters, a stone memorial archway with nine dragons coiling around its pillars, stone pavilions, and wooden pavilions have been constructed.
It has a temperate monsoon climate with obvious monsoons and distinct four seasons: dry and rainy spring, warm and rainy summer, cool and dry autumn, and cold and snowy winter.
