Nanshe, an ancient village of Ming and Qing Dynasties, is located in Nanshe Village, Chashan Town, Dongguan City. Surrounded by green trees, Nanshe Village began to prosper during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and produced many talents. Nine Jinshi scholars appeared one after another. It is a major village in the Chashan area and even in Dongguan.
The agricultural settlement cultural landscape with strong Pearl River Delta characteristics is composed of residential houses, ancestral halls, academies, shops, family temples, ancient banyan trees, pavilions, village walls, ancient wells, lanes, archways, etc. What is commendable is that there are many undamaged buildings from the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and a large number of stone carvings, brick carvings, wood carvings, gray sculptures and ceramic architectural components are preserved, which have high artistic value.
The Xie Clan Ancestral Hall, the Centenarian Temple, the Hundred Years Archway, the Xie Yuqi Family Temple, and the Zizheng Residence are among the finest examples of the Nanshe ancient architectural complex. The layout of the ancient dwellings is primarily based on the Jin and Ming styles. With the exception of the Xie Clan Ancestral Hall, which features a three-courtyard layout, the other family ancestral halls and temples are designed as quadrangle courtyards with two courtyards. They are primarily Cantonese-style, with influences from Chaoshan, Wuyue, and Western architectural cultures. This is a rare example of a Ming and Qing dynasty ancient village in the Pearl River Delta.
