Keyuan Garden in Dongguan, along with Qinghui Garden in Shunde, Yuyin Mountain Villa in Panyu, and Liangyuan in Foshan, is considered one of the four famous gardens of modern Guangdong. Construction began in the 30th year of the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty and is characterized by its small size and ingenious design, artistically integrating residences, living rooms, villas, courtyards, gardens, and studies.
Within its three acres, pavilions, towers, landscapes, bridges, trees, halls, and courtyards are all present. Its layout is staggered, interconnected, and winding, creating a complex and enigmatic experience. The keynote is that empty spaces offer scenery, sparse spaces are not empty, the small reveals the big, the dense yet not crowded, the quiet yet interesting, the quiet yet fragrant. Combined with its fresh and elegant furnishings and the use of water-filled flowers, it embodies a distinctly southern style and is a treasure of Guangdong gardens.
