Introducing Ma Guoshi Cemetery

The Ma Imperial Preceptor Ma Cemetery is located at Chaoyang Ferry, across a river from Qionghai City in Hainan Province, and Lecheng Island. It was built by Ma's descendants for Ma Runtong, a Ming Dynasty "imperial preceptor" and righteous citizen. Runtong, also known as Zhongyu, was appointed Imperial Preceptor by the emperor for his generosity, his dedication to teaching people to be virtuous, and his support for the weak and the poor. He died the following year after receiving the title. This cemetery was built to commemorate his memory.

The cemetery is lush with fruit trees, bearing abundant fruits in autumn, a vibrant scene. A stele bears the inscription of an imperial decree: "Civil and military officials shall dismount here." In front of the mausoleum, incense burners still hold candles, often offered by descendants of the imperial tutor or other visitors. This is the most solemn and awe-inspiring part of the cemetery.
