Devil City, also known as Urho Wind City, is located in the Urho mining area on the lower reaches of the Jiamu River on the northwest edge of the Junggar Basin in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, 100 kilometers southwest of Karamay City. It features unique wind-eroded landforms with bizarre shapes, earning the local Mongolian name "Sulumuhaq."
The Uyghurs call it "Shayitan Keerxi," meaning "Devil City." In fact, this is a typical area of Yardang landform. "Yardang" means "steep-sided hillock" in Uyghur. Yardang landform is named after the Yardang area near Lop Nur in the Tarim Basin of Xinjiang. It is a type of wind erosion landform formed in arid and windy environments.
"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Seven Swordsmen" were both filmed here. The Devil City is famous for its unique wildlife resources and ancient Mongolian customs. Its desolate and majestic vastness has always deeply attracted photography enthusiasts from home and abroad.
Karamay City has a typical continental climate, characterized by drought, little rainfall, and strong winds in spring and autumn. Devil City experiences constant winds year-round, with gales reaching force 300 and peak winds reaching 10-12 mph. Over millions of years, erosion by wind and rain has shaped the earth into gullies of varying depths, creating a myriad of different thoughts. Whenever the wind blows, sand and rocks fly, creating strange, cryptic shadows.
