Yongtai Ancient City, commonly referred to as Yongtai Ancient City, is located in Shitan Township, Jingtai County, Gansu Province. With a history of over 400 years, it was built by the Ming government to defend against invasions by northern ethnic minorities. Upon its completion, it became a military fortress, housing the Lanzhou Lieutenant General. At the time, the city housed over 2,000 soldiers and 500 cavalrymen, along with facilities such as a gunpowder depot, a fodder yard, a mill, and a horse stable. The city, resembling a golden tortoise, earned the name Yongtai Turtle City. Its oval shape forms the tortoise's body, with four urn-shaped artillery emplacements forming its shoulders and feet, and a small outer fortress at the south gate forming its head. A large beacon tower flanked by six small piers at the base of the north outer wall forms the tortoise's tail. Thirty steps outside the south gate stood a large pool known as Taiji Pond. The Yongtai City Wall is 1,727 meters long, 12 meters high, 4 meters wide at the top, and 9 meters wide at the base, remaining largely intact. Built as a military fortress, Yongtai City was surrounded by a moat approximately 6 meters wide, now dry.
