A 2004 survey by Northeast Forestry University found 610 plant species across 88 families in the area. Azalea Sea
Within the Hongxing Volcanic Rock Geological Park, a vast expanse of lava and rubble, formed by a volcanic eruption 100 million years ago, is known as the "Xing'an Stone Sea." Surrounding this "Stone Sea" lies a Xing'an azalea forest stretching for over ten miles. Locally, the Xing'an azalea is known as "Dazixiang." Its dark green leaves and rosy red flowers stand out against the vibrant greenery. They never bloom singly, but rather cluster in clusters of dozens, forming a vast ball of blossoms that appear as a single large flower from a distance and a cluster of smaller ones up close. Every year in mid-May, vibrant azaleas burst forth against the black basalt, creating a magnificent sea of azaleas. The rocks blend in with the flowers, and the flowers on the rocks themselves. The magnificent scenery is breathtaking, and visitors feel as if they are transported to a fairyland.
Kulbin Rime
The Dapingtai Wetland Nature Reserve boasts vast expanses of water and abundant aquatic plants, renowned for its lush natural vegetation. The Kulbin Reservoir covers a total area of 44 square kilometers and holds 390 million cubic meters of water. The Kulbin Reservoir's hydroelectric power station releases water above freezing daily to generate electricity. The river remains frozen year-round, creating a thick fog. Every winter, this fog and cold air merge to create a spectacular, fairytale-like rime display – the Kulbin Rime.
