Chaillonghai is located in the Qilian Mountain Binggou River Scenic Area in Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County, Wuwei City, Gansu Province, with an altitude of 3,980 meters. It is the highest and largest natural glacial lake in the Qilian Mountains (about 1,000 meters long and 250-300 meters wide). It is called "Dahu Lacuo" (meaning "sky") in Tibetan and is regarded as a "holy lake" by local Tibetans.
Chaillong Lake was formed by the retreat of glaciers from the Aniganggar Snow Mountain. The lake is as blue as a mirror and is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and shrouded in clouds and mist. In the rainy season, you can see the spectacle of "Buddha's Light Shining Everywhere", and at night, "Chaillong Lake embracing the moon" is an even more spectacular sight.
Historically, Chaillonghai was regarded as the source of the Shiyang River (formerly known as Gushui) in the Han Dynasty, nourishing the oasis civilization of Wuwei. There is a local legend about the appearance of a dragon on the second day of the second lunar month. There are ruins of the Dragon King Temple nearby, and believers often come here to pray.
Suitable season for visiting:
June-July: The Malanhua Grassland is a sea of purple flowers, and the Nimera Grand Canyon presents the spectacle of "flowering on ice" (the glaciers have not melted and the rhododendrons are in bloom).
September-October: Autumn colors permeate the forest, the weather is stable, and hiking feels more comfortable.
Recommended places to visit:
1. Nimera Canyon
There are still glaciers in the canyon in midsummer, with water flowing under the ice and wild flowers blooming on the ice surface, which is a geological wonder.
2. Malanhua Grassland
In June, thousands of acres of purple amaranth flowers contrast with the snow-capped mountains, and you may occasionally encounter a group of white yaks foraging, making it a great place for light hiking and photography.
3. Honghua Ranch
At the sightseeing bus transfer station, Tibetan-style pastoral houses dot the meadows, where you can experience the pastoral culture.
4. Aniganggar Snow Mountain Viewing Platform
Looking out at the glacier and snow-capped mountains at the source of the holy lake, it looks like a divine realm in the clouds and mist.
