Built during the Portuguese colonial period in the 16th century, Mutrah Castle is an important part of Oman's coastal defense system, used to resist foreign invasions.
Its architecture blends Portuguese military style with Arabic influences, featuring thick stone walls, watchtowers, and gun emplacements. From its perch, it overlooks Muscat Harbor. Following the Omani Reconquest in the 18th century, the fort became a key military stronghold for the Omani regime. Today, it is open to the public as a historical site, offering panoramic views of the harbor from its summit. Below, the Muttrah Souq, where centuries-old commercial traditions continue, stands as a living testament to Oman's maritime history.
