Shipi Lane, located on Xiaxi Street in Xitang Town, west of Zhongfu Hall, is an open-air alley sandwiched between two residential buildings. Built in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, it is the narrowest of Xitang Town's 122 lanes, just 1 meter wide and 0.8 meters at its narrowest point. It stretches 68 meters and is paved with 216 smooth stones, preserving its ancient and unique charm.
Anyone who's ever visited Xitang will love these bluestone paths. In the early morning or at sunset, walking through these long alleys, long skirts dragging on the ground, swaying figures, and the crisp sound of footsteps on the bluestone slabs. Looking at the ship-lined alleys, one imagines the courtyards that were locked away in the Spring and Autumn Period.
