Shantou University began planning in early 1979 and was approved by the State Council on August 26, 1981. Marshal Ye Jianying personally inscribed the university's name. Located in Shantou City, Guangdong Province, the university was approved by the State Council in 1981 and is one of the ten provincial-level 211 comprehensive universities prioritized during Guangdong Province's Ninth and Tenth Five-Year Plans. It is also a pilot institution for the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Doctors Education and Training Program." It is a provincial-ministerial joint venture between the Ministry of Education, Guangdong Province, and the Li Ka Shing Foundation. It is the only public university in the world to receive ongoing funding from the Li Ka Shing Foundation, a private foundation.
