Gaotang culture boasts a rich and profound history, as best exemplified by the pottery unearthed from the Guhe Han Dynasty Tombs, the murals from the Hanzhai Jin Dynasty Tombs, and the well-preserved pagodas from the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Gaotang boasts a stellar roster of cultural figures. During the reign of Emperor Huan of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the stele of the Hundred Stones Clerk of Lu, Yiying, requested the Confucius Temple be erected. This stele, still preserved in Qufu, is a representative example of Han Dynasty official script. Modernly, Gaotang County is the hometown of the renowned Chinese painting master Li Kuchan. In 1997, it was designated a "Hometown of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy" by the Ministry of Culture.
Gaotang has a rich cultural and historical heritage, known for its Confucian sites and long-standing local traditions. It reflects the historical development of Shandong province and plays an important role in preserving regional culture and architecture.
