Crescent Lake, located in the Crescent Lake Scenic Area, was formerly known as Shajing and more commonly known as Yaoquan. It lies at the northern foot of Mingsha Mountain, 5 kilometers southwest of Dunhuang City, Gansu Province. Nearly 100 meters long from north to south and about 25 meters wide from east to west, the spring is deep in the east and shallow in the west, reaching its deepest point at about 5 meters. Its crescent-shaped curve gives it its name, earning it the nickname "The Greatest Spring in the Desert." Since the Han Dynasty, it has been one of the "Eight Scenic Spots of Dunhuang."
