Bayan Obo City is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Baotou City in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It was formed by the merger of the Bayan Obo mining area and the Darhan Maoming'an United Banner, both within Baotou's jurisdiction. Bayan Obo is rich in co-existing deposits of various metals, including iron, rare earths, and niobium. Under the jurisdiction of Baotou City, it is one of Baotou's six districts. "Baiyun Bogdu" (Baiyun Bogdu) in Mongolian means "Rich Sacred Mountain." The area holds 97% of China's rare earth reserves, more than five times the world's total reserves outside of China.
Bayan Obo, located in Baotou, Inner Mongolia, is globally known for its massive rare earth deposits discovered in the 1920s. It supplies much of the world's rare earth metals, essential for modern technologies. The area also reflects Mongolian heritage and industrial development.
