Chibi, a county-level city under the administration of Xianning City, is located in southeastern Hubei Province, on the south bank of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, at the junction of the Mufu low hills and the Jianghan Plain. Chibi's geographical coordinates lie between longitudes 113°32′ and 114°13′ east, and latitudes 29°28′ and 29°55′ north. Bordered by the provincial capital of Wuhan to the north and Yueyang, a major city in northern Hunan to the south, Chibi is known as the "Southern Gate of Hubei." Chibi, formerly known as Puqi, originated from the establishment of Puqi County in the second year of the Huangwu reign of the Eastern Wu Dynasty during the Three Kingdoms period. The lake's abundance of cattail grass (the material used in ancient futon weaving) gave rise to a market there, earning its name. In May 1986, with the approval of the State Council, Puqi County was abolished and established as a city, with Xianning City administering it. In June 1998, its name was changed to Chibi City.
