Shamao Mountain is a relic of the Shang and Zhou dynasties. In 1965, a large number of stone axes, stone adzes, pottery bowls, pottery pendants, and bronze urns were unearthed. The Shang Dynasty bronze urn is used as the emblem of the Provincial Museum. Shamao Mountain has been designated a municipal cultural relic protection site.

In 2002, Hannan began focusing on the development of the Shamao Mountain Cultural Tourism Scenic Area. The mountain, where human skull fossils dating back tens of thousands of years and artifacts from the Shang and Zhou dynasties were discovered, underwent comprehensive renovations and built the "Hanyang Man" and Shang and Zhou Cultural Museum. According to historical records, the Yaoxiang Pavilion was built at the forefront of Shamao Mountain, where Huang Gai burned Cao Cao's camp.
