Pingnan was originally part of Gutian County. In 1735, during the 13th year of the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty, the county was established by dividing the 13 towns of Yifeng, Xinsu, and Hengxi in the northeastern part of Gutian County. The county seat, Shuangxi, was located south of Cuiping Mountain, hence the name "Pingnan" given by Emperor Yongzheng. After its establishment, Pingnan was under the jurisdiction of Fuzhou Prefecture. In 1971, the former Fu'an Special Administrative Region moved its headquarters to Ningde, and the name was changed to Ningde Prefecture, with Pingnan County under its jurisdiction. Pingnan is known as the "County Where the Red Flag Never Fell," "Hometown of Mandarin Ducks," "Hometown of Summer Mushrooms," and "Hometown of Oil-Pearl," and is also known as Fujian Province's "Hometown of Hydropower."
