Wenxi County, formerly known as Tongxiang, was renamed Zuoyi County during the Qin Dynasty. Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Liu Che, upon hearing of the victory in pacifying Nanyue, bestowed the name "Wenxi" upon it. Wenxi now belongs to Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province. Located in southwestern Shanxi Province, Wenxi lies at the junction of the Yuncheng and Linfen Basins. It borders Jiangxian and Yuanqu County to the east, Houma and Xinjiang to the north, Jishan, Wanrong, and Yanhu District to the west, and Xia County to the south. Wenxi County boasts a rich history spanning over 2,100 years, dating back to the change from Zuoyi Tongxiang to Wenxi. It has produced numerous notable figures and numerous historical sites. During the Wei and Jin dynasties, there was Pei Xiu, the father of cartography; Pei Du, a sage prime minister of the Tang Dynasty; Zhao Ding, a renowned anti-Jin minister; and Yang Shenxiu, one of the "Six Gentlemen of the Wuxu Reform" in the Qing Dynasty.
