Linyi County, formerly known as Xunyang, is a county under the jurisdiction of Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province. Formed by the merger of Linjin County and Yishi County, Linyi County is located in the Yuncheng Basin in southwestern Shanxi Province. Bounded by the Yellow River to the west, Mount Taiyue to the east, the Emei Mountains to the north, and the Zhongtiao Mountains to the south, it boasts no mountains and is the only flat county in Shanxi Province. Linyi County boasts a long history. Its vast, flat natural environment fostered the enfeoffment of Xunbo and the prosperity of Yidun. Its fertile land and proximity to saltwater made it a vassal state during the reigns of Emperors Yao and Shun, and the site of the Yi State during the Xia Dynasty. Yi is home to numerous cultural relics and historical sites, including the Yidun Tomb from the Spring and Autumn Period, the Warring States Period Chariot and Horse Pit, the Twin Pagodas from the Sui and Tang Dynasties, Tang Dynasty cypress trees, a Song Dynasty silver coffin, and a Yuan Dynasty hall. In particular, the Twin Pagodas, built during the Sui and Tang Dynasties and located in the eastern corner of the county seat, are renowned for their "sun and moon shadows."
