It was established as a county in 373 AD (the first year of the Ningkang reign of the Eastern Jin Dynasty), and later as Dong'an County in 1912. In 1914, due to its location south of Tongchuan Prefecture, it was renamed Tongnan. In 2015, the State Council approved the change from county to district. Tongnan boasts a favorable ecological environment and beautiful scenery. With clean water, lush vegetation, and an average annual temperature of 17.9°C, it serves as a leisure hub and natural oxygen bar for Chengdu and Chongqing.
