Jinyun Mountain, located on the banks of the Wentang Gorge of the Jialing River in Beibei District, Chongqing, was formerly known as Bashan. It is an anticline mountain range formed by the Yanshan Movement 70 million years ago.
White clouds linger in the mountains, resembling mist, yet not fog, smoke, yet not smoke. The majestic and lingering scenery creates a myriad of auras. Morning and evening, the clouds blaze with vibrant colors, a dazzling riot of colour. The ancients called "red more than white" (jin), hence the name Jinyun Mountain. Jinyun Mountain, along with the Jialing River's Little Three Gorges and Hechuan Diaoyucheng, has been designated a national scenic spot.
Jinyun Mountain covers a total area of 76 square kilometers, with an altitude ranging from 350 to 951 meters. With its pleasant scenery and rich plant resources, it is known as "Jinyun in the north and stalagmites in the south."
On December 17, 2014, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development announced the results of its law enforcement inspection, and the Jinyun Mountain Scenic Area was criticized for failing to meet the standards and ordered to make rectifications within a specified period of time.
On December 11, 2015, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development included the Jinyun Mountain Scenic Area in Chongqing on the endangered list and issued a yellow card warning; the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development will order it to rectify the problem within a time limit and focus on supervision.
