Helong City is located in the southeastern part of Jilin Province and the southern part of Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture. It is situated on the eastern foot of Changbai Mountain and faces the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea across the Tumen River. It has two national-level land ports facing North Korea: Nanping and Guchengli.

A seasonal alpine lake, Laolike Lake forms a lake during the wet season and a swamp during the dry season. On the edge of the wetland, clusters of precious blueberries grow on the towering mounds, laden with red berries. Laolike Lake is a flat lake nestled high atop a mountain. Jindalai Folk Village, formerly known as Mingyan Village, is located in central Helong City, 21 kilometers from downtown. It has a total population of 1,243, 96% of whom are ethnic Korean.
