Ascension Island is a British Overseas Territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean. It consists of a main island and several affiliated cays. Administratively, it is affiliated with the colony of Saint Helena. Its capital is Georgetown. Ascension Island was discovered by the Portuguese in 1501. It lies just west of the mid-ocean ridge that separates the South American and African plates. It is the outcropping of a volcanic cone that rises steeply from the abyssal plain more than 4,000 meters below the ocean surface.
Because there are large air force bases of the United States and Britain, a space observatory of NASA, and satellite and cable communication relay stations of the BBC and Cable & Wireless on Ascension Island, outsiders need written approval from the commissioner to enter the island.
Ascension Island has a subtropical climate with prevailing southeast trade winds, resulting in a pleasant climate. Rainfall is evenly distributed throughout the year, but is more concentrated in January and April. It is warm and humid all year round.
Ascension Island, a remote volcanic island in the South Atlantic, was discovered in 1501. It became strategically important for the British during the 19th century for naval and communication purposes, and today serves as a key military and communications base. The island also has unique biodiversity with several endemic species.
Ascension Island is located in the South Atlantic Ocean, roughly midway between Africa and South America. Access is by air via Wideawake Airfield, primarily through flights from St. Helena or the UK. Walking and taxis are used locally; there is no public bus system.
The island is accessible year-round, but the best time to visit is during the dry season, May–October, for calmer weather and better wildlife observation.
There are no general entrance fees for the island itself. Specific activities, like guided tours or boat trips, may charge fees that are booked on-site or through local tour operators.
Flights and organized tours should be booked well in advance, typically 2–3 months ahead, due to limited availability.
4–7 days are recommended to explore main sights, hike, enjoy beaches, and take wildlife tours.
Guided tours are available in English, often arranged through local operators. Audio guides are limited.
Night wildlife tours may be available during turtle nesting season; there are no major light shows.
Ascension Island is sparsely populated and rarely crowded. Any tourism peaks coincide with specific wildlife events or military operations.
Main settlements and beaches are accessible. Hikes and rugged volcanic areas may be challenging for elderly or disabled visitors.
Cash (Ascension Island Pound or GBP) is accepted; credit cards are usable at most establishments in Georgetown.
Vegetarian options are limited; vegan and halal options may be requested in advance at main eateries.
